  • Simulation-based education as a provider of fieldwork insights – experiences of ambulance nurse specialist students
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Nursing. - 1472-6955.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Medicine is facing a global shortage of nurses, including those with postgraduate education. One suggested educational method for undergraduate and postgraduate education, such as specialist ambulance nurse education, is simulation-based education (SBE). The implementation of SBE is motivated, in part, by the desire to attract and retain students, but also to contribute to student learning. Consequently, the use of SBE is increasing in specialist ambulance nurse education. The aim of this study was to explore how specialist ambulance nursing students experience SBE.Methods: This qualitative survey study involved the collection of study data using a purposefully designed, paper-based survey comprising five open-ended questions that required participant free-text answers. The answers were analysed using inductive content analysis and searching for descriptions of the participants’ experiences. The survey was presented to 35 specialist ambulance nursing students. Results: The results are presented in two themes: SBE as learning and SBE as an educational method. Participating in SBE during the programme provides students with a realistic understanding of their future profession and its expected demands. The learning experience disregards prior work experience in ambulance services. Conclusions: Based on the findings, conclusions are that SBE is an appreciated educational method among nursing students, regardless of their prior experience in the field of prehospital care. To some extent, this differs from previous research findings related to this subject. Furthermore, SBE contributes to the provision of field work insights, preparing the ambulance nurse specialist students.

  • Mapping and socioeconomic analysis of transportation noise in Sweden, 2018
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • SMED is short for Swedish Environmental Emissions Data, which is a collaboration between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, SCB Statistics Sweden, SLU Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and SMHI Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. This study has examined noise exposure on a national scale for Sweden by calculating road and rail noise for the entire country. Calculations have been made according to the Nordic Prediction Method for both road and rail. For aviation noise, data is extracted directly from Swedavias yearly noise report with addition of military flights.Because of the large scale of noise mapping, several simplifications have been made in both data and calculations. For validation, the national noise mapping has been compared to noise data reported to EU via the Environmental Noise Directive (END), indicating a ratio of 0.4-1.5 compared to END data for road in intervals between 52.5 and >72.5 dBa and 1-1.8 for rail for the intervals between 49 and >69 dBA.Since 1998, the Environmental Protection Agency has produced national noise analysis, similar to this one for the years; 1992 (Wittmark, 1992), 1995 (Wittmark, 1997), 2000 (Ingemansson Technology AB , 2002), 2006 (WSP Akustik, 2009), 2011 (SWECO, 2014). Even though the task and method for these previous reports were similar, there are many differences. Therefor a trend analysis is not feasible. There are many aspects that could improve accuracy for future national mapping such as including definition of hard and soft ground effect due to different ground types, estimation of exposure point height using building geometries. Most likely the most important change is to include buildings and noise barriers effects on noise.

  • Capturing biologic treatment for IBD in the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register and the Swedish National Patient Register–a validation study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5521 .- 1502-7708. ; 56:4, s. 410-421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: It is not known to what extent biologic treatment for IBD is captured in the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register (PDR) and the National Patient Register (NPR). Methods: A cross-sectional study from July 2005 until 2017, comparing data on biologic treatment in the PDR and the NPR with medical records. We assessed the proportion of started treatment episodes in the medical records that were found in the PDR/NPR ever, within +/− one year and within +/− three months; for any biologic drug, per specific drug (infliximab, adalimumab, golimumab, vedolizumab, ustekinumab), by calendar period (2005–2008, 2009–2012, and 2013–2017) and by study center. For adalimumab, we assessed the validity of end of treatment episodes. Results: Medical records of 1361 patients and 2323 treatment episodes with any biologic were reviewed and 80.1% (95% CI: 78.4–81.7) were ever captured in the PDR/NPR in. A time window of +/− one year or +/− three months reduced the sensitivity to 63.3% (95% CI: 61.3–65.3) and 52.6% (95% CI: 50.5–54.6), respectively. The sensitivity was high (>85%) for the prescribed injection drugs adalimumab, golimumab, and ustekinumab for all time windows and for adalimumab end of treatment, while considerably lower for the infusion drugs infliximab and vedolizumab. Conclusions: The PDR and the NPR are reliable data sources on treatment with injection biologics in patients with IBD in Sweden. Infliximab and vedolizumab are poorly captured, why PDR/NPR data should only be used after careful consideration of their limitations or complemented by other data sources, e.g., the disease-specific quality register SWIBREG.

  • The interaction of hydrogen with metallic glass
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Combining theoretical ab initio calculations with high-purity thin film sample synthesis and in situ measurements is a compelling way to bridge the gap in our understanding concerning hydrogen in metallic glasses, which is the primary work of this dissertation thesis. The main emphasis has been on how hydrogen affects the structure of metallic glasses, and how those changes influence not only the electronic properties of the amorphous metals but also their thermal stability.    The real-space correlations in the form of the pair distribution functions in thin metallic films have primarily only been accessible through synchrotron radiation. An effective methodological procedure using laboratory-based x-ray sources is here brought forth, which, for the first time, can produce accessible and accurate pair distribution functions from thin films down to a thickness of 80 nm.    The underpinning mechanisms behind the hydrogen-induced volume expansion of metallic glasses in the form of the dipole force tensor and an elastic hydrogen-hydrogen interaction were examined using in situ neutron reflectometry and first-principles calculations of expanding V80Zr20 amorphous structures. The dipole force tensor was concluded to be similar in magnitude to a mole-fraction-weighted sum of the ones found in hydrogen-contained vanadium and zirconium crystals, and the theoretical calculations demonstrated that it and the interaction energy varies with hydrogen concentration.   The electronic structure of the metallic glass V80Zr20 was determined via hard x-ray photoemission spectrometry and confirmed by first-principles calculations to be modified by the presence of hydrogen, in which a collection of s-d hybridized states 7 eV below the Fermi level was formed. The changes closer to the Fermi level, together with the volume expansion, were via experiments and ab initio calculations established to cause a parabolic change in resistance and a strong wavelength dependence on the optical transmission.   The thermal stability of amorphous VxZr1-x metals, investigated via ab initio calculations of the thermodynamic driving force towards crystallization, was found to affirm the observed hydrogen-induced enhancement in thermal stability.

  • Dynamics in magnetic metamaterials
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Metamaterials are artificially created structures with properties that are not found in nature. They can be tailored to achieve desired response to external excitations such as external electric and magnetic fields, as well as to enhance materials’ optical or magnetic activity. Magnetic metamaterials comprised of arrays of sub-micrometer sized magnetic elements, can be used for a range of different applications, such as magnonic crystals and building blocks for magnetic memory elements. In this work, pathways for tuning magnetization dynamics are explored. Different magnetic metamaterials containing arrays of sub-micrometer sized elements, refered to as nanomagnets, were used as model systems for these explorations. The nano-magnets comrising these arrays are of two kinds: XY-rotors, with a magnetization direction rotating freely in-plane of a disk, and Ising-like spins, pointing along either of the two allowed magnetization directions. The Ising-like spins can be realized in either in-plane or out-of-plane magnetized materials.Collective magnetization dynamics were investigated in square arrays of coupled nanomagnets. Studies revealed that nanomagnet’s magnetization state cannot always be approximated by a ridig mesospin approximation. Instead, it was demonstrated that upon an external perturbation, such as an external magnetic or thermal field, internal magnetization experience texture excitations. The observed texture excitations have implications on the nanomagnet coupling in an array.Arrays, where collective phenomena emerge via excited plasmon resonances, were used for investigations of light-induced dynamics processes. Studies revealed importance of an array design for the observation of magneto-optical activity enhancement and more eÿcient ultrafast magnetization dynamics. It was reported that in arrays containing truncated Au nanocones with TbCo tip, enhancement of TbCo demagnetization can be achieved via resonant light illumination.Utilizing the array concept and magnetic anisotropy of a material, it is possible to create metamaterials, where a range of magnetization dynamics regimes can be investigated. Inter-element spacing defines on which lengthscale the nanomagnets will be coupled and which effects can be utilized for tuning system’s magneto-optical response and excited magnetization dynamics.

  • Magnetic and all-optical switching properties of amorphous TbxCo100-x alloys
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2475-9953. ; 4:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amorphous TbxCo100-x magnetic alloys exhibit a list of intriguing properties, such as perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, high magneto-optical activity, and magnetization switching using ultrashort optical pulses. Varying the Tb:Co ratio in these alloys allows for tuning properties such as the saturation magnetic moment, coercive field, and the performance of light-induced magnetization switching. In this paper, we investigate the magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical properties of various TbxCo100-x thin-film alloy compositions. We report on the effect the choice of different seeding layers has on the structural and magnetic properties of TbxCo100-x layers. We also demonstrate that for a range of alloys, deposited on fused silica substrates, with Tb content of 24-30 at. %, helicity-dependent all-optical switching of magnetization can be achieved, albeit in a multishot framework. We explain this property to arise from the helicity-dependent laser-induced magnetization on the Co sublattice due to the inverse Faraday effect. Our paper provides an insight into material aspects for future potential hybrid magnetoplasmonic TbCo-based architectures.

  • An endothelial regulatory module links blood pressure regulation with elite athletic performance
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: PLOS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 20:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The control of transcription is crucial for homeostasis in mammals. A previous selective sweep analysis of horse racing performance revealed a 19.6 kb candidate regulatory region 50 kb downstream of the Endothelin3 (EDN3) gene. Here, the region was narrowed to a 5.5 kb span of 14 SNVs, with elite and sub-elite haplotypes analyzed for association to racing performance, blood pressure and plasma levels of EDN3 in Coldblooded trotters and Standardbreds. Comparative analysis of human HiCap data identified the span as an enhancer cluster active in endothelial cells, interacting with genes relevant to blood pressure regulation. Coldblooded trotters with the sub-elite haplotype had significantly higher blood pressure compared to horses with the elite performing haplotype during exercise. Alleles within the elite haplotype were part of the standing variation in pre-domestication horses, and have risen in frequency during the era of breed development and selection. These results advance our understanding of the molecular genetics of athletic performance and vascular traits in both horses and humans.

  • Amorphous Magnetic Materials : A Versatile Foundation for Tomorrow’s Applications
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Amorphous magnetic materials exhibit a number of key differentiating properties with respect to crystalline magnets. In some cases, the differences may simply be in the values of macroscopic properties such as saturation magnetization, coercivity, Curie temperature, and electrical conductivity. Other cases are more fundamental, such as the possibility for many amorphous alloys to be produced with nearly arbitrary composition, something that is not always possible in crystal structures that may only be stable for certain specific compositions.Fundamentally, these properties arise due to the disordered arrangement of atoms in amorphous materials. However, this structure is challenging to probe and characterize, either experimentally or theoretically. A significant contribution of this thesis is the development of a new approach for studying the local atomic structure of amorphous materials, specifically amorphous SmCo and FeZr alloys. The strategy combines extended x-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) measurements with stochastic quenching (SQ) simulations in a way that provides more information than either method can offer alone. Additionally, this approach offers the potential for identifying any shortcomings in the theoretical models obtained via SQ.Having an accurate model of the atomic arrangement is not, however, a prerequisite for developing technical applications of amorphous magnetic materials. For that, it is sufficient to quantify those macroscopic properties that are relevant for a given application. Such is the value of the magnetic characterization of amorphous TbCo and CoFeZr alloy thin films presented here. Both investigations used methods such as vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements to highlight the high tunability of the magnetic properties in these materials, which can be achieved simply by changing the chemical composition. The final portion of this thesis examines what can be achieved by combining amorphous SmCo and TbCo alloys together in bilayer structures. This is a step away from the alloy characterization studies, as it focuses on how new properties can be realized when multiple materials are brought together. MOKE measurements were used to identify the conditions under which the bilayers spontaneously become magnetized parallel to the film plane versus when the TbCo magnetization begins to tilt out of the plane. Further investigation combining x-ray circular magnetic dichroism (XMCD) measurements and micromagnetic simulations provided a depth-resolved model of the magnetization throughout the bilayers in the presence of a broad range of external field strengths and directions. These models also showed that the local magnetization just above and just below the SmCo/TbCo interface can be aligned either parallel or antiparallel to one another simply by varying the TbCo composition. This discovery offers a novel method for controlling the magnetic behavior in these materials, and may well be useful for all-optical switching or spintronics applications where amorphous TbCo alloys have already drawn attention.

  • Local structure in amorphous SmxCo1-x : a combined experimental and theoretical study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 55, s. 12488-12498
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a combination of extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, stochastic quenching (SQ) calculations and Voronoi tessellation analysis, the local atomic environments in thin films of amorphous SmxCo1−x (x= 0.10, 0.22 and 0.35) are investigated and also compared with crystalline stoichiometric Sm–Co alloys of similar compositions. It is found that the variations in local environment around Co atoms in the amorphous films increase with increasing x and that none of the films exhibit any pronounced short-range order around the Sm atoms. There are, however, signs of clustering of Sm atoms in the SQ-generated simulated amorphous materials. Furthermore, good agreement is observed between experimentally obtained parameters, e.g., interatomic distances and coordination numbers, and those extracted from the simulated alloys. This is a strong indication that SQ provides a powerful route to reliable local structure information for amorphous rare earth–transition metal alloys and that it could be used for designing materials with properties that meet the demands of specific applications.

  • Direct and indirect magnetocaloric properties of first- and second-order phase transition materials
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative cooling technology based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is discussed in this thesis. The thesis has two major parts, one devoted to material characterization and the other to instrument development. Different magnetic oxides and intermetallic compounds with second-order and first-order magnetic transitions, respectively, were studied with the aim of finding materials suitable for magnetic refrigeration. For the application of the MCE, a high value of the isothermal entropy changes and the relative cooling power (RCP), along with minimal temperature hysteresis are required. The temperature hysteresis is negligible for all studied second-order compounds, while an almost ten times higher value of the isothermal entropy change has been observed for the first-order compounds. The highest value of isothermal entropy change (20 J/kgK at 2 T applied magnetic field) has been observed for the MnNiSi-type compounds exhibiting magneto-structural phase transitions, while the largest value of the RCP (176 J/kg at 2 T applied magnetic field) has been observed for the Fe2P-type compounds exhibiting magneto-elastic phase transitions. For the characterization of magnetocaloric properties, one important parameter is the adiabatic temperature change, which is often not reported in literature owing to the lack of experimental setups for direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect. This thesis also includes the development of a setup for the direct measurement of the adiabatic temperature change upon a change in a magnetic field.

  • Pro-Environmental Transformation of the Equine Sector—Facilitators and Challenges
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Animals. - : MDPI. - 2076-2615. ; 14:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To improve horse welfare and ensure a sustainable equestrian future, we need to understand human behavior in relation to the challenges of the sector. The purpose of this paper is to map and analyze how individuals within the equine sector in Sweden and Norway define the environmental challenges they are faced with and how these are related to questions about horse welfare. A mixed-methods parallel design was used. The data consist of survey answers and semi-structured interviews. The survey, responded to by 697 Swedish and Norwegian participants, ensured statistical validity and power through a sample size calculation yielding approximately 385 participants. To deepen the understanding, 36 semi structured interviews with Swedish and Norwegian interviewees were conducted. An analysis of convergencies and divergencies between the data sets provided robust insights into the perceptions and behaviors within the equine sector in Sweden and Norway. The findings show that the equine sector has cultivated a stronger environmental commitment over the last 15 years (Svala, 2008). However, many participants express a perceived lack of influence on this transformation. The COM-B model (Michie, Van Stralen & West, 2011; Michie, Atkins & West, 2014) and previous research on ‘thinking structures on climate delay’ (Wormbs & Wolrath, 2023) are used to interpret the data. The analysis indicates that there is an overall capacity for change, and that skills and knowledge exist, but some individuals desire more information and a deeper understanding of the issues at hand. Higher barriers to change were found in the opportunity component, where physical constraints such as location, resources, and time seem challenging for individual actors to influence. Economic factors are also identified as impediments to transformation. Cultural norms related to orderliness within stables, although not directly addressing ecological nor ethical challenges, might serve as a foundation for promoting environmental initiatives that will also improve horse welfare.

  • Systematic evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 antigens enables a highly specific and sensitive multiplex serological COVID-19 assay
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Clinical & Translational Immunology. - : Wiley. - 2050-0068. ; 10:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. The COVID-19 pandemic poses an immense need for accurate, sensitive and high-throughput clinical tests, and serological assays are needed for both overarching epidemiological studies and evaluating vaccines. Here, we present the development and validation of a high-throughput multiplex bead-based serological assay. Methods. More than 100 representations of SARS-CoV-2 proteins were included for initial evaluation, including antigens produced in bacterial and mammalian hosts as well as synthetic peptides. The five best-performing antigens, three representing the spike glycoprotein and two representing the nucleocapsid protein, were further evaluated for detection of IgG antibodies in samples from 331 COVID-19 patients and convalescents, and in 2090 negative controls sampled before 2020. Results. Three antigens were finally selected, represented by a soluble trimeric form and the S1-domain of the spike glycoprotein as well as by the C-terminal domain of the nucleocapsid. The sensitivity for these three antigens individually was found to be 99.7%, 99.1% and 99.7%, and the specificity was found to be 98.1%, 98.7% and 95.7%. The best assay performance was although achieved when utilising two antigens in combination, enabling a sensitivity of up to 99.7% combined with a specificity of 100%. Requiring any two of the three antigens resulted in a sensitivity of 99.7% and a specificity of 99.4%. Conclusion. These observations demonstrate that a serological test based on a combination of several SARS-CoV-2 antigens enables a highly specific and sensitive multiplex serological COVID-19 assay.

    • Better understanding of the nature of magnetic coupling in soft/hard nanocomposites paves the way for tailored exchange-spring magnets. We have investigated a series of amorphous magnetic thin films and trilayers of magnetically soft Co85(Al70Zr30)15 and magnetically hard Sm12Co81Ti7, produced with DC magnetron sputtering. The overall magnetic properties of the trilayers were investigated with focus on the effects of layer configuration and thicknesses on coercivity, originating from the Sm12Co81Ti7 phase, and uniaxial in-plane anisotropy induced from the Co85(Al70Zr30)15 phase. In addition, we found that the thermal stability of a 20 nm Sm12Co81Ti7 layer was significantly increased if surrounded by two 10 nm Co85(Al70Zr30)15 layers in a trilayer structure.

  • The Enrichment of Specific Hair Follicle-Associated Cell Populations in Plucked Hairs Offers an Opportunity to Study Gene Expression Underlying Hair Traits
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Molecular Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 1661-6596 .- 1422-0067. ; 24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gene expression differences can assist in characterizing important underlying genetic mechanisms between different phenotypic traits. However, when population-dense tissues are studied, the signals from scarce populations are diluted. Therefore, appropriately choosing a sample collection method that enriches a particular type of effector cells might yield more specific results. To address this issue, we performed a polyA-selected RNA-seq experiment of domestic horse (Equus ferus caballus) plucked-hair samples and skin biopsies. Then, we layered the horse gene abundance results against cell type-specific marker genes generated from a scRNA-seq supported with spatial mapping of laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) skin to identify the captured populations. The hair-plucking and skin-biopsy sample-collection methods yielded comparable quality and quantity of RNA-seq results. Keratin-related genes, such as KRT84 and KRT75, were among the genes that showed higher abundance in plucked hairs, while genes involved in cellular processes and enzymatic activities, such as MGST1, had higher abundance in skin biopsies. We found an enrichment of hair-follicle keratinocytes in plucked hairs, but detected an enrichment of other populations, including epidermis keratinocytes, in skin biopsies. In mammalian models, biopsies are often the method of choice for a plethora of gene expression studies and to our knowledge, this is a novel study that compares the cell-type enrichment between the non-invasive hair-plucking and the invasive skin-biopsy sample-collection methods. Here, we show that the non-invasive and ethically uncontroversial plucked-hair method is recommended depending on the research question. In conclusion, our study will allow downstream -omics approaches to better understand integumentary conditions in both health and disease in horses as well as other mammals.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish response to the COVID-19 pandemic included age-based recommendations of voluntary quarantine specifically for those 70 years of age or older. This paper investigates the experiences of a sudden change of policy in the form of an age restriction that trumped the contemporary active aging ideal. A web-based qualitative survey was conducted in April 2020. Through manual coding of a total of 851 responses, six different ways of relating to the age-based recommendations were identified. The results show that age is not an unproblematic governing principle. Instead, in addition to protecting a vulnerable group, the age-based recommendation meant deprivation of previously assigned individual responsibility and, consequently, autonomy. It is shown how respondents handled this tension through varying degrees of compliance and resistance. Findings highlight the importance of continuously tracking the long-term consequences of age-based policy to avoid negative self-image and poorer health among older adults.

  • Evaluation of dyskerin expression and the Cajal body protein WRAP53 beta as potential prognostic markers for patients with primary vaginal carcinoma
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Oncology Letters. - : SPANDIDOS PUBL LTD. - 1792-1074 .- 1792-1082. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Primary vaginal cancer (PVC) is a rare gynaecological malignancy, which, at present, lacks appropriate biomarkers for prognosis. The proteins dyskerin and WD repeat containing antisense to TP53 (WRAP53 beta), both of which exert their functions in the telomerase holoenzyme complex, have been shown to be upregulated in different cancer types. These proteins have also been proposed as prognostic markers in some types of cancer. The aim of the present study was to examine the expression patterns of dyskerin and WRAP53 beta in patients with PVC. Moreover, as part of a search for effective biomarkers to evaluate prognosis in PVC, the expression of these two proteins and their potential association with clinical variables and survival were also evaluated. The expression of dyskerin and WRAP53 beta was assessed in PVC tumour samples from 68 patients using immunohistochemistry. The majority of tumour samples showed low and moderate expression levels of dyskerin. Upregulation of dyskerin in tumour samples was significantly associated with a shorter survival time and a poorer cancer-specific survival rate. WRAP53 beta was also expressed in most of the cells but was not significantly associated with clinical variables or survival. This study demonstrates that upregulation of dyskerin is significantly associated with poor prognosis. Thus, dyskerin may serve as a promising prognostic marker and a potential putative therapeutic target in PVC.

  • Magnetic properties of hard-soft amorphous nanolaminates
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Amorphous magnetic thin film heterostructures and multilayers are often used in data storage as well as spintronic devices. Spintronics will help the next generation of nano-electronic devices to increase their memory and processing power and reduce their power consumption. This thesis focuses on the developments of hard and soft amorphous thin films as well as soft/hard multilayers, with an emphasis on the optimization of these materials for use in, for example, spintronics applications. The key for optimization lies in the understanding of the fundamental relationships between structural disorder, composition, and macroscopic magnetic properties. The first part of thesis presents a systematic combinatorial study of composition-structure-property relationships in amorphous alloy thin films of SmCoTi and CoZr, with a particular emphasis on tuning the coercivity µ0Hc ordering temperature Tc, and saturation magnetization Ms with composition. It has been found that 5-7 at.% Ti increases the room temperature coercivity approximately by a factor of ~ 2 (maximum µ0Hc ≈ 0.2 T) compared to amorphous SmCo for Co content in the range 80-85 at.%. For CoZr, dilution of Co with Zr decreases the overall Co moment and the ordering temperature. In magnetic multilayered device architectures, these amorphous alloys might be appropriate for use as soft layers (CoZr) or tunable pinning layers (SmCoTi), depending on the application. This thesis also explores the combination of amorphous hard (SmCo or SmCoTi) and soft (CoAlZr) alloys in bilayer, trilayer, and multilayer structures. The sandwiched of hard and soft amorphous layers that are produced by magnetron sputtering exhibit well-defined interfaces without any lattice strain. First-order reversal curve measurements show that the amorphous hard and soft phases are rigidly exchange-coupled, i.e., the soft phase moment always follows the magnetization direction of the hard phase, for up to at least 20 nm thickness. It is easy to imprint uniaxial in-plane anisotropy in these samples. Both the coercivity and the anisotropy constant increase significantly, by a factor of approximately 4, with increased interface density in the case of CoAlZr/SmCoTi multilayers. In soft/hard/soft trilayers with the same materials, thermal stability is enhanced compared to a single hard layer. Experimental results presented in this thesis demonstrate the potential for tuning properties important to applications based on thin films and multilayers.

  • Magnetic Properties versus Interface Density in Rigid-Exchange-Coupled Amorphous Multilayers with Induced Uniaxial Anisotropy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 133:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the possibility to tune the saturation magnetization, coercivity, and uniaxial in-plane anisotropy constant in amorphous bilayers and multilayers of Co85(Al70Zr30)15 and Sm11Co82Ti7 through the interface density. From magnetometry and x-ray circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements, we conclude that the easy-axis coercivity ?0?? increases four times when the number of bilayer repetitions, ?, increases from 1 to 10 within a constant total sample thickness of 20 nm. At the same time, the anisotropy constant ?? also increases by a factor four, whereas the saturation magnetization ?? decreases slightly. The Co spin and orbital moments, ?? and ??, are found to be approximately constant within the sample series. The average total Co moment is only 0.8–0.9 ??/atom, but the ??/?? ratio is strongly enhanced compared to pure Co. Magnetization curves extracted from XMCD measurements show that the Co and Sm moments are ferromagnetically coupled for all samples.

  • Rigid Exchange Coupling in Rare-Earth-Lean Amorphous Hard/Soft Nanocomposites
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advanced Electronic Materials. - : Wiley. - 2199-160X. ; 6:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrification of vehicles and renewable energy is increasing the demand for permanent magnets, but the cost and scarcity of rare-earth metals is an obstacle. Creating nanocomposites of rigidly exchange-coupled hard and soft magnets, for which the magnetization reversal occurs as in a single magnetic-phase material, is a promising route toward rare-earth-lean permanent magnets with high energy products. The hard/soft exchange coupling is, however, often reduced due to rough interfaces and structural defects, resulting in exchange-spring behavior rather than rigid exchange coupling. Here, it is shown that artificially sandwiched hard and soft amorphous magnets produced by magnetron sputtering exhibit smooth interfaces, and the first order reversal curve (FORC) technique is used to show that the hard and the soft phases are rigidly exchange coupled. Micromagnetic simulations, using a random-anisotropy model, are used to predict the thickness limit of the rigid exchange coupling. A great advantage of amorphous hard/soft composites is the possibility to obtain a wide range of magnetic properties by finely tuning the composition of the individual phases.

  • Structural and magnetic properties of amorphous CoxZr100-x films
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 108:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetometry and first-principles density functional theory-based calculations were used to investigate the concentration dependence of magnetic properties of amorphous CoxZr100-x alloys. A linear increase in saturation magnetization (Ms) is observed in both the experiments and calculations. Samples with Co content of at least 62 at.% are inferred to be ferromagnetic at 5 K. The experimentally determined ordering temperature is found to scale quadratically with Co concentration indicating a complex interplay between local structural motifs and magnetic parameters such as exchange interaction and anisotropy.

  • Influence of nano-VC on the structural and magnetic properties of MnAlC-alloy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alloys of Mn55Al45C2 with additions of VC nano-particles have been synthesized and their properties evaluated. The Mn55Al45C2(VC)(x) (x=0.25, 0.5 and 1) alloys have been prepared by induction melting resulting in a high content of the ferromagnetic tau -phase (>94 wt.%). Powder X-ray diffraction indicates that nano-VC can be dissolved in the alloy matrix up to 1 at.%. On the other side, metallography investigations by scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscope show inclusions of the nanosized additives in the microstructure. The effect of nano-VC on the grain and twin boundaries has been studied by electron backscattering diffraction. The magnetization has been measured by magnetometry up to 9 T while the domain structure has been studied using both magnetic force microscopy as well as Kerr-microscopy. For nano-VC contents above 0.25 at.%, a clear increase of the coercive force is observed, from 57 to 71 kA/m. The optimum appears to be for 0.5 at.% nano-VC which shows a 25% increase in coercive force without losing any saturation magnetization. This independent increase in coercivity is believed to originate from the nano-VC reducing the overall magnetic domain size. Overall, we observe that addition of nano-VC could be an interesting route to increase the coercive force of MnAl, without sacrificing saturation magnetization.

  • Designing order with long-range interactions in mesoscopic magnetic chains
  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates how the low-energy magnetic configuration of a mesoscopic chain can be tuned by geometrical modifications. The magnetic arrays made by single-domain stadium shaped elements positioned side-by-side were fabricated by patterning into a sputtered ferromagnetic thin film. The thickness of the thin film was determined by X-ray reflectivity measurements while Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy were used to characterize the surface morphology of the nanostructures. Magnetic Force Microscopy was used to image the magnetic configuration of mesoscopic chains after applying a thermal annealing protocol and a field demagnetization protocol. By gradually modifying the geometrical arrangement of the half of mesospins, the magnetic chain is found to exhibit a transition from antiferromagnetic to dimer antiferromagnetic configuration after the thermal annealing treatment. After the field demagnetization protocol, both antiferromagnetic and dimer antiferromagnetic domains are formed. Micromagnetic simulations were performed to investigate how the interaction between the mesospins is affected by the geometrical modifications and a qualitative method was invented to examine the theoretical low-energy state of the magnetic chains. It is found that the low-energy magnetic configuration of the mesoscopic arrays is formed after the competition and collaboration of different interactions and is the one observed after the thermal annealing treatment.
