  • MISiCFET chemical sensors for applications in exhaust gases and flue gases
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum. - 0255-5476 .- 1662-9752. ; 433-4, s. 953-956
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A chemical gas sensor based on a silicon carbide field effect transistor with a catalytic gate metal has been under development for a number of years. The choice of silicon carbide as the semiconductor material allows the sensor to operate at high temperatures, for more than 6 months in flue gases at 300degreesC and for at least three days at 700degreesC. The chemical inertness of silicon carbide and a buried gate design makes it a suitable sensor technology for applications in corrosive environments such as exhaust gases and flue gases from boilers. The selectivity of the sensor devices is established through the choice of type and structure of the gate metal as well as the operation temperature. In this way NH3 sensors with low cross sensitivity to NOx have been demonstrated as potential sensors for control of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by urea injection into diesel exhausts. Here we show that sensors with a porous platinum or iridium gate show different temperature ranges for NH3 detection. The hardness of the silicon carbide makes it for example more resistant to water splash at cold start of a petrol engine than existing technologies, and a sensor which can control the air to fuel ratio, before the exhaust gases are heated, has been demonstrated. Silicon carbide sensors are also tested in flue gases from boilers. Efficient regulation of the combustion in a boiler will decrease fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

  • Structural ordering in phenyl-substituted polythiophenes
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Macromolecules. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0024-9297 .- 1520-5835. ; 33:15, s. 5481-5489
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Various substituted poly(phenylthiophene)s have been studied by X-ray diffraction. They are semicrystalline, with very different degrees of crystallinity. Those with para-substituted phenyl groups have a low degree of crystallinity, whereas those with ortho-substituted phenyl groups are more crystalline. The most crystalline materials in this study have two equally long substituents on the phenyl ring, one at the ortho position and the other at the ortho or meta position on the opposite side of the phenyl ring. Poly(3-(2,5-dioctylphenyl)thiophene) (PDOPT) was most thoroughly studied, and a structural model is proposed. The structure of PDOPT is quite different from previously studied substituted polythiophenes in that the octyl side chains are directed normal to the thiophene planes. In this way, the conjugated polymer chains are kept separated from each other. Solution-cast and spin-cast PDOPT films are anisotropic, with the octyl side chains oriented normal to the film surface in both cases. This is contrary to the situation for poly(3-alkylthiophene)s, where solution-cast and spin-cast films orient in different ways.

  • Differential expression of vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT) 1 and 2 in gastrointestinal endocrine tumours.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: The Journal of pathology. - : Wiley. - 0022-3417. ; 195:4, s. 463-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neuroendocrine tumours are characterized by their capacity to produce hormones, which are stored in vesicles and secretory granules. Demonstration of granule/vesicle proteins in tumours is taken as evidence of neuroendocrine differentiation. Vesicular monoamine transporters (VMAT1 and VMAT2) mediate the transport of amines into vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. The expression of VMAT1 and VMAT2 and the usefulness of VMAT1 and VMAT2 in the histopathological diagnosis of gastrointestinal endocrine tumours have not been fully explored. This study therefore investigated the expression of VMAT1 and VMAT2 in 211 human gastrointestinal tumours by immunocytochemistry and western blotting. VMAT1 and/or VMAT2 were demonstrated in the majority of amine-producing endocrine tumours of gastric, ileal, and appendiceal origin. Serotonin-producing endocrine tumours (ileal and appendiceal carcinoids) expressed predominantly VMAT1, while histamine-producing endocrine tumours (gastric carcinoids) expressed VMAT2 almost exclusively. In peptide-producing endocrine tumours such as rectal carcinoids and endocrine pancreatic tumours, only a small number of immunopositive tumour cells were observed. No labelling was found in non-endocrine tumours, including gastric, colorectal and pancreatic adenocarcinomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumours. In conclusion, VMAT1 and VMAT2 are differentially expressed by gastrointestinal endocrine tumours, with a pattern specific for each tumour type, reflecting their neuroendocrine differentiation and origin. VMAT1 and VMAT2 may therefore become valuable markers in the classification of neuroendocrine tumours and may also indicate patients suitable for radioisotope treatment operating via these transporter systems.

  • Substrate bias amplification of a SiC junction field effect transistor with a catalytic gate electrode
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum. - 0255-5476 .- 1662-9752. ; 457-460, s. 1507-1510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The drain current-voltage (I-d-V-D) characteristics of a chemical gas sensor based on a catalytic metal insulator silicon carbide field effect transistor (SiC-FET) were measured in H-2 or O-2 ambient while applying negative substrate bias, V-sub, at temperatures up to 600degreesC. An increase in the negative V-sub gives rise to an increase of the drain voltage at a given drain current level, which can be used to adjust the device baseline. In addition, we found that the difference in drain voltage between H-2 and O-2 ambient at a given drain current level (the gas response to H-2) increases for an increased negative substrate bias. By modifying an equation for the drain current in a SIT (static induction transistor), the influence of substrate bias on the amplification factors, mu and eta, was estimated using the temperature dependence of the I-d-V-D characteristics. From this, the effect of substrate bias on the gas response to hydrogen was calculated. It was clarified that the increase in the gas response caused by the negative substrate bias is due to a substrate bias dependence of the amplification factor of the short channel device.

  • En jude är en jude är en jude- : representationer av "juden" i svensk skämtpress omkring 1900-1930
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this dissertation it is argued that anti- Semitism was self evident in Sweden at the turn of the century 1900. Through an analysis of the comic press, which was a crucial element in mass culture and political life, the author tries to demonstrate how the everyday version of a national Swedish identity was constructed in opposition to 'The Jew'.In the decades either side of 1900, anti-Semitism had very little to do with the Swedish Jews and their doings. It was instead a question of the needs created by the process of modernisation and of how the established anti-Semitic discourse identified the 'Jew' as the villain of this particular piece. The comics not only provide insights into the complex processes by which national identities were formed, but also largely contributed to their creation. The comics were crucial in staking out the boundaries around 'Swedishness'. In comics, film and literature the penetration of the anti-Semitic discourse becomes most obvious. 'The Jew' is represented as the antithesis of 'The Swede'.

  • Preparation of nanosize anatase and rutile TiO2 by hydrothermal treatment of microemulsions and their activity for photocatalytic wet oxidation of phenol
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 106:41, s. 10674-10679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles of both anatase and rutile phases were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of microemulsions, and their photocatalytic activity for wet oxidation of phenol was studied. The only difference between the two syntheses used was that different acids were added to the microemulsions, making direct comparison of the catalytic activity of the two polymorphs possible. If hydrochloric acid was used, the rutile structure formed, and if nitric acid was used, anatase formed. The phase stability of the microemulsion was studied and according to conductivity and turbidity measurements the idea of a direct template effect could be discarded during the hydrothermal treatment. However, an initial size-templating phenomenon is possible during the mixing step. The particles, which were in the size range of a few nanometers were characterized with N-2-adsorption; XRD, SEM, and XPS. The activity of the two polymorphs for the photocatalytic oxidation of phenol in water was examined. It was shown that the rutile phase initially decomposed phenol much faster and follows a first-order process reasonably well (k = 4 x 10(-5) s(-1)). The photodecomposition process using the anatase phase led, however, to a much more rapid overall degradation following an initial slower rate of phenol oxidation. The results indicate that the observed difference of the photodecomposition process for the two TiO2 phases is due to the formation of different intermediates.

  • Cutaneous vascular reactivity is reduced in aging and in heart failure: association with inflammation
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Clinical Science. - 1470-8736. ; 105:6, s. 699-707
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we have investigated whether changes in vascular reactivity in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients can be detected in the cutaneous microvessels and whether these changes are due to endothelial dysfunction, are affected by increasing age and related to an ongoing inflammation. The responses to local warming and iontophoretically administered endothelium-dependent and -independent vasodilators were investigated in healthy young adults, healthy elderly adults and elderly adults with CHE The results were correlated with plasma concentrations of vascular risk factors and markers for endothelial dysfunction and inflammation. The vasorelaxant responses were reduced in the elderly groups and were attenuated further in the CHF group. This group also had increases in levels of several markers associated with inflammation, higher blood glucose and homocysteine levels, a lower low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and a rise in the concentration of von Willebrand factor, indicating a prothrombotic endothelial function. The severity of the heart failure, measured as the plasma level of brain natriuretic peptide, correlated with the intensity of inflammation and to the changes in vascular risk factors and endothelial function. It is concluded that the reactivity of the cutaneous microvessels is reduced with age, and the presence of CHF causes a further impairment. There is endothelial dysfunction in CHF, but it is uncertain to what extent this contributes to the reduced vasodilatory capacity. The inflammatory response appears central for many of the manifestations of the CHF syndrome.
