    • An organic electronic paper display technology (see Figure and also inside front cover) is presented. The electrochromic display cell together with the addressing electrochemical transistor form simple smart pixels that are included in matrix displays, which are achieved on coated cellulose-based paper using printing techniques. The ion-electronic technology presented offers an opportunity to extend existing use of ordinary paper.

    • Denna rapport sammanfattar och reflekterar över lärdomar från tolv Balanced Scorecard projekt. Rapporten skall i första hand läsas som ett bidrag till diskussionen om relevansen av Balanced Scorecard i utvecklingen av kommunala sektorns styrsystem. Vad som förmedlas är en illustration av och reflektion över styrmodellens förtjänster och till¬korta¬kommanden. Rapporten är ett resultat av ett utvecklingsprogram för Region Skånes ekonomer under åren 1998-1999. Under programmens löptid fick 48 ekonomer arbeta med att sälja in, förankra och igångsätta ett utvecklingsarbete med fokus på Balanced Scorecard i 12 enheter inom Region Skåne. Genomförda projektarbeten doku¬menterades i tolv projekt¬rapporter, som i redigerat och förkortat skick bildar stommen i denna rapport. Med tanke på att det finns få dokumenterade beskrivningar av hur man de facto kan arbeta med BSC inom den kommunala sektorn är förhoppningen att rapporten kan vara till glädje för de som är nyfikna på BSC. Rapporten innehåller också diskussioner kring relationen mellan BSC och övriga styrsystem.

  • Induced low temperature catalytic ignition by transient changes in the gas composition

    • The effect of gas composition changes on the low temperature activity for supported platinum model catalysts has been studied. By introducing well-controlled periodic O2 pulses to a simple diluted gas mixture of CO and O2, a substantial improvement of the low temperature oxidation activity was observed. The reason for low activity on noble metals at low temperatures is often attributed to self-poisoning by CO. The improved catalytic performance observed is proposed to origin from the transients causing a surface reactant composition that is favourable for the reaction rate, i.e. lower degree of self-poisoning. This was also confirmed by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in combination with mass spectrometry measurements, which gave evidence for the existence of a strong interplay between the gas phase concentration and the adsorbate composition for these catalysts.

    • The ignitionextinction processes for CO oxidation over a Pt/Al2O3 monolith catalyst have been studied by flow-reactor experiments and simulations. The study was performed by stepwise changes of the inlet O2 concentration ranging 020 vol% while the CO concentration and the inlet gas temperature were kept constant at 1.0 vol% and 423 K, respectively. Several features observed experimentally are qualitatively simulated with our model: (i) the ignition of the CO oxidation demands 8.0vol% O2 (ii) corresponding to a catalyst ignition temperature of 433 K (due to the exothermicity of the reaction) and (iii) occurs in the rear part of the monolith where (iv) a local reaction zone is formed which (v) moves towards the reactor inlet as a function of time on stream. Additionally, the simulations show first order kinetic phase transitions, i.e. rapid adsorbate concentration changes, where the catalyst surface is predominantly CO covered in the low reactive state and almost completely oxygen covered in the high reactive state. For the ignition process the kinetic phase transition occurs after the actual catalytic ignition. However, the extinction process is more difficult to simulate dynamically without changing the model parameters for O2 adsorption in the low and high reactive state, respectively. The influence of diffusion limitations and the role of formation of a less reactive Pt state under oxidising conditions is discussed.

The improved catalytic performance observed here is suggested to origin from the transients causing a surface reactant composition that is favourable for the reaction rate.

    • The Sub-millimetre and Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) is the main instrument on the Swedish, Canadian, Finnish and French spacecraft Odin. It consists of a 1.1 metre diameter telescope with four tuneable heterodyne receivers covering the ranges 486-504 GHz and 541-581 GHz, and one fixed at 118.75 GHz together with backends that provide spectral resolution from 150 kHz to 1 MHz. This Letter describes the Odin radiometer, its operation and performance with the data processing and calibration described in Paper II.

    • Rare earth element (REE) data from weekly sampling of the filtered (<0.45 μm) and suspended particulate phase during 18 months in the Kalix River, Northern Sweden, are presented together with data on colloidal particles and the solution fraction (<3 kDa). The filtered REE concentration show large seasonal and temporal variations in the river. Lanthanum varied between approximately 300 and 2100 pM. High REE concentration in the filter-passing fraction is related to increased water discharge and there is a strong correlation between the REE concentration, organic carbon, Al and Fe. Physical erosion of detrital particles plays a minor role for the yearly transport of particulate REE in this boreal river system. The suspended particulate fraction, which is dominated by non-detrital fractions, accounted for only 35% of the yearly total transport of La in the river. Approximately 10% of the REE were transported in detrital particles during winter. At spring-flood in May, about 30% of the LREE and up to 60% of the HREE where hosted in detrital particles. Ultrafiltration of river water during spring-flood shows that colloidal particles dominate the transport of filter-passing REE. Less than 5% of the filtered REE are found in the fraction smaller than 3 kDa. The colloidal fraction shows a flat to slightly LREE enriched pattern whereas the solution fraction (<3 kDa) show an HREE enriched pattern, compared with till in the catchment. Suspended particles show a LREE enriched pattern. Data indicate that the REE are associated with two phases in the colloidal (and particulate) fraction, an organic-rich phase (with associated Al-Fe) and an Fe-rich (Fe-oxyhydroxide) inorganic phase. The Ce-anomaly in the suspended particulate fraction in the river shows systematic variations, and can be used to interpret fractionation processes of the REE during weathering and transport. There was no anomaly at maximum spring-flood but during the ice-covered period the anomaly became more and more negative. The temporal and seasonal variations of the Ce-anomaly in the suspended particulate phase reflect transport of REE-C-Al-Fe-enriched colloids from the upper section of the till (and/or from mires) to the river at storm events.

  • Ba/Sr, Ca/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios in soil water and groundwater: implications for relative contributions to stream water discharge

    • Barium/Sr and Ca/Sr ratios have been used to model the relative importance of different sources of stream water. Major and trace element concentrations together with 87Sr/86Sr ratios were measured in precipitation, soil water, groundwater and stream water in a small (9.4 km2) catchment in northern Sweden. The study catchment is drained by a first order stream and mainly covered with podzolized Quaternary till of granitic composition. It is underlain by a 1.8 Ga granite. A model with mixing equations used in an iterative mode was developed in order to separate the stream water into 3 subsurface components: soil water, shallow groundwater, and deep groundwater. Contributions from precipitation are thus not included in the model. This source may be significant for the stream water generation, but it does not interfere with the calculations of the relative contributions from the subsurface components. The results show that the deep groundwater constitutes between 5 and 20% of the subsurface water discharge into the stream water. The highest values of the deep groundwater fraction occur during base flow. Soil water dominates during snowmelt seasons, whereas during base flow it is the least important fraction. Soil water accounts for 10–100% of the subsurface water discharge into the stream water. Shallow groundwater accounts for up to 80% of the subsurface water discharge with the lowest values at peak discharge during snowmelt seasons and the highest values during base flow. The validity of the model was tested by comparing the measured 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the stream water with the 87Sr/86Sr ratios predicted by the model. There was a systematic difference between the measured and modelled 87Sr/86Sr ratios which suggests that the fraction of soil water is overestimated by the model, especially during spring flood. As a consequence of this overestimation of soil water the amount of shallow groundwater is probably underestimated during this period. However, it is concluded that the differences between measured and predicted values are relatively small, and that element ratios are potentially effective tracers for different subsurface water flowpaths in catchments.

    • Water-soluble hemicelluloses were extracted from spruce chips by heat-fractionation using microwave treatment. A screening of conditions (pH, temperature and residence time) was performed for the extraction of O-acetyl-galactoglucomannan (AcGGM). The yield and the average molecular weight of the extracted mannan were analysed using HPLC, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and mass-spectrometry. The pH during heat fractionation influenced the yield and the structure of AcGGM. The highest yield (78%) of AcGGM (average molecular weight 3800) was achieved with heat-fractionation in water at 190degrees C for 5 minutes. With 0.025% NaOH, an average molecular weight of 9500 was obtained at a yield of 30%. AcGGM molecular weight standard molecules were prepared using SEC. The structure of the AcGGM was determined using H-1-NMR. The enzymatic hydrolysis of AcGGM was studied using beta-mannanase and alpha-galactosidase.

    • One way to extend the lean-burn limit of a natural gas engine is by addition of hydrogen to the primary fuel. This paper presents measurements made on a one-cylinder, 1.6- liter natural gas engine. Two combustion chambers, one slow and one fast burning, were tested with various amounts of hydrogen (0, 5, 10 and 15%-vol) added to natural gas. Three operating points were investigated for each combustion chamber and each hydrogen content level; idle, part load (5 bar IMEP) and 13 bar IMEP (simulated turbocharging). Air/fuel ratio was varied between stoichiometric and the lean limit. For each operating point, a range of ignition timings were tested to find maximum brake torque (MBT) and/or knock. Heat-release rate calculations were made in order to assess the influence of hydrogen addition on burn rate. Addition of hydrogen showed an increase in burn rate for both combustion chambers, resulting in more stable combustion close to the lean limit. This effect was most pronounced for lean operation with the slow combustion chamber.
