  • Estimation of Residence Time in Continuous Flow Systems with Dynamics
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Process Control. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-1524 .- 1873-2771. ; 5:1, s. 9-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method for estimation of residence time in continuous flow systems with varying dynamics is presented. By resampling, i.e., choosing time instants different from the given sampling instants, and interpolation between measured data points, we obtain a continuous flow system with constant residence time expressed in the new resampled time vector. We assume the flow patterns in the systems are invariant. The new data set is then used for identification of parameters in a chosen model structure. From the identified model, the residence time is readily calculated and a procedure for that is briefly described. The presented method is readily extended to enable use in recursive identification. In that case, however, as an improvement of tracking ability of an ordinary recursive routine. Keywords : System identification, residence time estimation, time-varying systems, variable flow and/or volume, continuous flow systems, recursive identification.

  • Influence of different conditions of tilt compensation on motion and motion-related discomfort in high speed trains
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Vehicle System Dynamics. - : Swets & Zeitlinger. - 0042-3114 .- 1744-5159. ; 29, s. 729-734
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Train speed may be increased by constructing new railways with improved curve geometry or by using tilting trains. The tilting system compensates the lateral acceleration felt by the passengers in curves by tilting the car body, thus allowing trains to run 25-30 % faster on existing curved tracks with maintained good ride comfort. Although motion sickness in tilting trains seems to be a small problem for most passengers it can be a problem to those prone to nausea. To investigate the incidence of motion related discomfort and how different tilt compensation strategies influence the occurrence of such discomfort, a full-scale test ride was conducted on a curved track with a tilting train. Seventy healthy volunteers were employed, selected for high subjective sensitivity to nausea. Three conditions were tested using three different cars under three days. The test ride lasted about 3 hours. Four times per test ride the subjects answered a questionnaire concerning vegetative symptoms, fatigue, sleepiness and nausea. The test persons' overall estimation of average ride comfort was good in all conditions, however, some persons reported motion related discomfort due to motion sickness. A 55% degree of tilt compensation of the lateral acceleration (in the track plane) instead of the normal 70%, reduced the number of test persons reporting dizziness and nausea by about 30 - 50%. Discomfort correlates very poorly with a motion dose (time integrated) of vertical acceleration but instead correlates better with a motion dose of roll angle acceleration.

  • Spatio-temporal filtering of digital angiography image data
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine. - 0169-2607 .- 1872-7565. ; 57:1-2, s. 115-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As welfare diseases become more common all over the world the demand for angiography examinations is increasing rapidly. The development of advanced medical signal processing methods has with few exceptions been concentrated towards CT and MR while traditional contrast based radiology depend on methods developed for ancient photography techniques despite the fact that angiography sequences are generally recorded in digital form. This article presents a new approach for processing of angiography sequences based on advanced image processing methods. The developed algorithm automatically processes angiography sequences containing motion artifacts that cannot be processed by conventional methods like digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and pixel shift due to non uniform motions. The algorithm can in simple terms be described as an ideal pixelshift filter carrying out shifts of different directions and magnitude according to the local motions in the image. In difference to conventional methods it is fully automatic, no mask image needs to be defined and the manual pixelshift operations, which are extremely time consuming, are eliminated. The algorithm is efficient and robust and is designed to run on standard hardware of a powerful workstation which excludes the need for expensive dedicated angiography platforms. Since there is no need to make additional recordings if the patient moves, the patient is exposed to less amount of radiation and contrast fluid. The most exciting benefits by this method are, however, that it opens up new areas for contrast based angiography that are not possible to process with conventional methods e.g. nonuniform motions and multiple layers of moving tissue. Advanced image processing methods provide significantly better image quality and noise suppression but do also provide the means to compute flow velocity and visualize the flow dynamics in the arterial trees by e.g. using color. Initial tests have proven that it is possible to discriminate capillary blood flow from angiography data which opens up interesting possibilities for estimating the blood flow in the heart muscle without use of nuclear methods.

  • The haemodynamic response to hyperinsulinaemia in hypertensive subjects
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Human Hypertension. - 0950-9240 .- 1476-5527. ; 13:1, s. 41-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to study if the vasodilatory action of insulin is impaired in essential hypertension, 24 untreated patients were challenged with a 2 h euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp (56 E/m2). Cardiac index (CI) was measured by thoracic impedance cardiography and leg blood flow (LBF) by Doppler ultrasound. During the clamp procedure a significant decline in blood pressure was seen (3.0-5.6% over 120 min, P < 0.001). However, no significant effects on ejection fraction (+6 +/- 8 s.d.%), CI (-1 +/- 2%), heart rate (+2 +/- 1%) or total peripheral resistance (TPRI, -0.5 +/- 2%) were found. LBF increased by 22 +/- 35% (P < 0.005). These haemodynamic effects of insulin were not related to age, sex, body mass index, blood pressure or the insulin-mediated glucose uptake during the clamp. In conclusion, insulin increased LBF, but no changes in CI and TPRI were seen in the hypertensive patients. Furthermore, no association between the ability of insulin to induce vasodilatation and to promote glucose uptake was seen.

  • Renal anaemia treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin increases cardiac output in patients with ischaemic heart disease
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology. - 0036-5599 .- 1651-2065. ; 30:2, s. 115-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increase in blood pressure is common during treatment of renal anaemia with recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). Concomitant findings of a decrease in cardiac output indicate that an increase in the peripheral flow resistance underlies the increase in blood pressure. The aim of this study was to elucidate the haemodynamic changes during rhEPO treatment in patients with ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Haemodynamic variables were assessed by impedance cardiography in 18 consecutive patients with renal anaemia before and after rhEPO treatment. IHD was found in eleven of these patients. The remaining seven served as controls. Before rhEPO treatment, the cardiac index was decreased in the group of patients with IHD, compared with controls and healthy subjects. Due to an increase in stroke index, the cardiac index increased during rhEPO treatment and reached values equal to those in the control group. The blood pressure increased and the increase in mean arterial pressure was correlated to the increase in cardiac index. Apparently the patients with IHD were unable to compensate for anaemia by increasing their cardiac index. Anaemia treatment increased cardiac index, which in turn caused an increase in blood pressure in these patients.
