  • E2-MAC : Energy Efficient Medium Access for Massive M2M Communications
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : IEEE Press. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 64:11, s. 4720-4735
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate energy-efficient clustering and medium access control (MAC) for cellular-based M2M networks to minimize device energy consumption and prolong network battery lifetime. First, we present an accurate energy consumption model that considers both static and dynamic energy consumptions, and utilize this model to derive the network lifetime. Second, we find the cluster size to maximize the network lifetime and develop an energy-efficient cluster-head selection scheme.Furthermore, we find feasible regions where clustering is beneficial in enhancing network lifetime. We further investigate communications protocols for both intra- and inter-cluster communications. While inter-cluster communications use conventional cellular access schemes, we develop an energy-efficient and load-adaptive multiple access scheme, called n-phase CSMA/CA, which provides a tunable tradeoff between energy efficiency, delay, and spectral efficiency of the network. The simulation results show that the proposed clustering, cluster-head selection, and communications protocol design outperform the others in energy saving and significantly prolong the lifetimes of both individual nodes and the whole M2M network.

  • Probing the valence character of O-1s -> Rydberg excited O-2 by participator Auger decay measurements and partial ion yield spectroscopy following x-ray absorption
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 126:17, s. 174304-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The valence character of O 1s -> Rydberg excited O-2 is investigated by means of participator Auger decay spectroscopy, performed at selected photon energies across the K-shell resonance region, and by means of partial ion yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy. For several of the excitation energies studied, the authors find substantial sigma(*)((4)Sigma(-)(u),(2)Sigma(-)(u)) valence character being mixed with ns sigma and np sigma ((4)Sigma(-)(u),(2)Sigma(-)(u)) Rydberg states. An experimental indication of a coupling between the channels associated with quartet and doublet ion cores is considered and discussed. New spectroscopic constants are derived for the singly ionized X (2)Pi(g) state of O-2 based on the observation of at least 20 vibrational sublevels.

  • Effect of clay modifier and matrix molar mass on the structure and properties of poly(ethylene oxide)/Cloisite nanocomposites via melt-compounding
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Polymer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-3861. ; 46:3, s. 903-914
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study is concerned with the preparation and characterisation of PEO/clay nanocomposites via melt-extrusion. Two different matrix molar masses of PEO were investigated as well as various types of the Cloisite clay range. PEO/Cloisite Na+ nanocomposites give rise to intercalated structures displaying only a moderate improvement of the mechanical properties at higher clay concentrations, regardless of the matrix molar mass. The chemical nature of the organic modifier was proven to be detrimental for the final nanocomposite structure and resulting mechanical properties. PEO nanocomposites based on the Cloisite 30B clay, incorporating a polar modifier, give rise to exfoliated structures. They display a strongly increased storage modulus, regardless of the matrix molar mass. The structural organisation of the nanocomposites based on Cloisite 20A, containing an apolar modifier, is very dependent on the matrix molar mass. An exfoliated structure can only be achieved upon melt mixing with a high molar mass PEO. In general, the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites based on the high molar mass PEO matrix are slightly superior. The thermal properties are also distinctly influenced by the addition of clay, although the actual structural organisation of the nanocomposite is proven to be less important. The melt temperature, as well as the crystallinity, decreases upon the addition of clay, especially for the low molar mass PEO matrix. The decomposition temperature shows a slight increase upon the addition of clay, especially for the Cloisite 30B nanocomposites.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Crohn's & Colitis. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 1873-9946 .- 1876-4479. ; 15:7, s. 1089-1105
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Aims: Diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD] requires a lifelong multidisciplinary approach. The quality of medical reporting is crucial in this context. The present topical review addresses the need for optimised reporting in endoscopy, surgery, and histopathology. Methods: A consensus expert panel consisting of gastroenterologists, surgeons, and pathologists, convened by the European Crohns and Colitis Organisation, performed a systematic literature review. The following topics were covered: in endoscopy: [i] general IBD endoscopy; [ii] disease activity and surveillance; [iii] endoscopy treatment in IBD; in surgery: [iv] medical history with surgical relevance, surgical indication, and strategy; [v] operative approach; [vi] intraoperative disease description; [vii] operative steps; in pathology: [viii] macroscopic assessment and interpretation of resection specimens; [ix] IBD histology, including biopsies, surgical resections, and neoplasia; [x] IBD histology conclusion and report. Statements were developed using a Delphi methodology incorporating two consecutive rounds. Current practice positions were set when >= 80% of participants agreed on a recommendation. Results: Thirty practice positions established a standard terminology for optimal reporting in endoscopy, surgery, and histopathology. Assessment of disease activity, surveillance recommendations, advice to surgeons for operative indication and strategies, including margins and extent of resection, and diagnostic criteria of IBD, as well as guidance for the interpretation of dysplasia and cancer, were handled. A standardised report including a core set of items to include in each specialty report, was defined. Conclusions: Interdisciplinary high-quality care requires thorough and standardised reporting across specialties. This topical review offers an actionable framework and practice recommendations to optimise reporting in endoscopy, surgery, and histopathology.

  • Your Answer Will Make an Impression : Using Quiz Game Mechanics for the Collection of Visitor Data in a Museum
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: VS-Games 2015. - Skövde : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479981021 - 9781479981014 ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the initial results from a project that aimed to collect visitor data at a traveling exhibition starting at the Regional Museum in Kristianstad, Sweden during 2014-2016. The project was intended also to contribute to the creation of an atmosphere “About time”, which was the subject of the exhibit. We built a system that was integrated as an interactable part of the exhibition by using elements of quiz game mechanics in combination with elements of data based tracking applications and elements of visual art installations. The data provides statistics which are used to visualize the current status of the visitors’ attitude toward specific questions about time, imprinting the visitors themselves an integral part of the exhibition. Visitors build a visual Game Ego when answering questions and at the same time provided statistical data that can be monitored and extracted from the system. The results show that we succeeded to some degree but more can be done towards incorporating game design elements to engage the user, such as feedback and challenge.

  • Developed technologies for damage simulation in ultrathin composite reinforcements and novel material with outstanding impact performance
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International SAMPE Technical Conference. - : Soc. for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering. - 9781934551233
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Damage assessments in the aerospace industry are for composites more demanding than they were before for traditional materials. The simulation of impact damage and damage growth has become increasingly important where testing of manufactured parts could be highly expensive, and reliable models are therefore essential for those materials that shall be used in this industry. Following the vested interest in Spread Tow reinforcements and its ultra-thin plies due to outstanding performance (among them the market leading TeXtreme®), the European Air TN project DAMTEX has aimed to develop analytical and FE models to predict the impact damage and damage propagation in thin woven composites. Extensive testing has been performed to feed and validate the material models through the characterization of fiber failure, delamination and residual strengths after an impact event in a drop tower test. As a result of the better understanding of these novel materials, a new Spread Tow reinforcement with improved damage performance has been developed. The interlaminar toughness, limited damage and excellent CAI results observed in this new material have outperformed those in currently used carbon fiber reinforcements. TeXtreme® will present the results from the DAMTEX project with regard to the acquired knowledge and developed technologies and materials.

  • Bakom rutinerna : kunskap och omvårdnadspraxis i mänskliga gränssituationer
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aim of this thesis was to study how family members, next of kin, and healthcare professionals construct and use knowledge in nursing praxis in human boundarysituations. The study was carried out on a surgical ward at a university hospital in Sweden.Methodology: Study I: A case study; data concerning a family with six familymembers were collected over 10 months using interviews, conversations, and diary notations.Study II: A hermeneutic approach; interviews with 27 family carers were conductedsix to eight months after a family member’s death. Studies III, IV: a combinedethnographic and hermeneutic approach; participant observations (285 hours), informalconversations (190), and interviews (25) were conducted with 25 nurses and 18 assistant nurses. The main findings were: (I) The family members used beliefs to explain and understandcancer, dying and death. The beliefs were aggregated into eight main beliefs and fourthemes: cancer is a deadly threat/death is a liberator; death can be held at bay/death canbe lived near; dying is done alone/dying should not be done alone; and life has anend/life is endless. These beliefs appear to oscillate between seemingly contrastingpoles. (II) The family carers made their own assessment of their loved one’s conditionand situation. Their actions were characterized by struggling to get treatment, being leftbehind, being partners, keeping the illness at a distance, hovering beside their loved one, waiting for death, and being experts and protectors. The family carers used practicalwisdom, phronesis, regarding what care was the best, or least harmful, for their lovedone in the encounter with professional care. (III) The nurses constructed knowledgethrough greeting the patient, and reading the patient. By being sensitive, using humor, and emotional involvement, understanding was deepened. By being suspicious and selfcritical, interaction was sought with nurse colleagues, the patient, relatives, and the doctor, and additional knowledge was obtained. They strived to be one step ahead in theirefforts to attain an understanding of the patient´s situation. The knowledge nurses makeuse of can be related to the intertwined and embodied forms of theoretical knowledge,i.e., episteme, practical professional knowledge, i.e., techne, and practical wisdom i.e.,phronesis. (IV) The nurses created and used emotional knowing that could be interpretedin relation to various rooms of emotions, thoughts and actions. They strived to dothings correctly in the normative room; created a safe, secure milieu for patients andnext of kin in the safety-security room; and questioned their actions in the critical room. They created an affinity for co-operation that was of benefit in encounters with patientsin the nurses’ affinity room. And they demonstrated compassion for patients and next ofkin; this compassion was particularly evident in the closeness room. Conclusion: In praxis, construction and use of knowledge occurs that often takes placebehind the routines. This knowledge constitutes an important content in nursing. Thehermeneutic spiral can serve a pedagogic purpose in elucidating nursing and its differentforms of knowledge.

  • Mitochondrial ion circuits.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Essays in Biochemistry. - : Portland Press Ltd.. - 0071-1365 .- 1744-1358. ; 47, s. 25-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proton circuits across the inner mitochondrial membrane link the primary energy generators, namely the complexes of the electron transport chain, to multiple energy utilizing processes, including the ATP synthase, inherent proton leak pathways, metabolite transport and linked circuits of sodium and calcium. These mitochondrial circuits can be monitored in both isolated preparations and intact cells and, for the primary proton circuit techniques, exist to follow both the proton current and proton electrochemical potential components of the circuit in parallel experiments, providing a quantitative means of assessing mitochondrial function and, equally importantly, dysfunction.
