  • Determinants of the Use of Health and Fitness Mobile Apps by Patients With Asthma : Secondary Analysis of Observational Studies

    • Background: Health and fitness apps have potential benefits to improve self-management and disease control among patients with asthma. However, inconsistent use rates have been reported across studies, regions, and health systems. A better understanding of the characteristics of users and nonusers is critical to design solutions that are effectively integrated in patients' daily lives, and to ensure that these equitably reach out to different groups of patients, thus improving rather than entrenching health inequities. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the use of general health and fitness apps by patients with asthma and to identify determinants of usage. Methods: A secondary analysis of the INSPIRERS observational studies was conducted using data from face-to-face visits. Patients with a diagnosis of asthma were included between November 2017 and August 2020. Individual-level data were collected, including age, gender, marital status, educational level, health status, presence of anxiety and depression, postcode, socioeconomic level, digital literacy, use of health services, and use of health and fitness apps. Multivariate logistic regression was used to model the probability of being a health and fitness app user. Statistical analysis was performed in R. Results: A total of 526 patients attended a face-to-face visit in the 49 recruiting centers and 514 had complete data. Most participants were <= 40 years old (66.4%), had at least 10 years of education (57.4%), and were in the 3 higher quintiles of the socioeconomic deprivation index (70.1%). The majority reported an overall good health status (visual analogue scale [VAS] score>70 in 93.1%) and the prevalence of anxiety and depression was 34.3% and 11.9%, respectively. The proportion of participants who reported using health and fitness mobile apps was 41.1% (n=211). Multivariate models revealed that single individuals and those with more than 10 years of education are more likely to use health and fitness mobile apps (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.22, 95%CI 1.05-4.75 and aOR 1.95, 95%CI 1.12-3.45, respectively). Higher digital literacy scores were also associated with higher odds of being a user of health and fitness apps, with participants in the second, third, and fourth quartiles reporting aORs of 6.74 (95%CI 2.90-17.40), 10.30 (95%CI 4.28-27.56), and 11.52 (95%CI 4.78-30.87), respectively. Participants with depression symptoms had lower odds of using health and fitness apps (aOR 0.32, 95%CI 0.12-0.83). Conclusions: A better understanding of the barriers and enhancers of app use among patients with lower education, lower digital literacy, or depressive symptoms is key to design tailored interventions to ensure a sustained and equitable use of these technologies. Future studies should also assess users' general health-seeking behavior and their interest and concerns specifically about digital tools. These factors may impact both initial engagement and sustained use.

    • The European Hematology Association (EHA) Roadmap for European Hematology Research highlights major achievements in diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and identifies the greatest unmet clinical and scientific needs in those areas to enable better funded, more focused European hematology research. Initiated by the EHA, around 300 experts contributed to the consensus document, which will help European policy makers, research funders, research organizations, researchers, and patient groups make better informed decisions on hematology research. It also aims to raise public awareness of the burden of blood disorders on European society, which purely in economic terms is estimated at (sic)23 billion per year, a level of cost that is not matched in current European hematology research funding. In recent decades, hematology research has improved our fundamental understanding of the biology of blood disorders, and has improved diagnostics and treatments, sometimes in revolutionary ways. This progress highlights the potential of focused basic research programs such as this EHA Roadmap. The EHA Roadmap identifies nine 'sections' in hematology: normal hematopoiesis, malignant lymphoid and myeloid diseases, anemias and related diseases, platelet disorders, blood coagulation and hemostatic disorders, transfusion medicine, infections in hematology, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. These sections span 60 smaller groups of diseases or disorders. The EHA Roadmap identifies priorities and needs across the field of hematology, including those to develop targeted therapies based on genomic profiling and chemical biology, to eradicate minimal residual malignant disease, and to develop cellular immunotherapies, combination treatments, gene therapies, hematopoietic stem cell treatments, and treatments that are better tolerated by elderly patients.

  • Feasibility and Acceptability of an Asthma App to Monitor Medication Adherence : Mixed Methods Study

    • Background: Poor medication adherence is a major challenge in asthma, and objective assessment of inhaler adherence is needed. The InspirerMundi app aims to monitor adherence while providing a positive experience through gamification and social support. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the InspirerMundi app to monitor medication adherence in adolescents and adults with persistent asthma (treated with daily inhaled medication). Methods: A 1-month mixed method multicenter observational study was conducted in 26 secondary care centers from Portugal and Spain. During an initial face-to-face visit, physicians reported patients' asthma therapeutic plan in a structured questionnaire. During the visits, patients were invited to use the app daily to register their asthma medication intakes. A scheduled intake was considered taken when patients registered the intake (inhaler, blister, or other drug formulation) by using the image-based medication detection tool. At 1 month, patients were interviewed by phone, and app satisfaction was assessed on a 1 (low) to 5 (high) scale. Patients were also asked to point out the most and least preferred app features and make suggestions for future app improvements. Results: A total of 107 patients (median 27 [P25-P75 14-40] years) were invited, 92.5% (99/107) installed the app, and 73.8% (79/107) completed the 1-month interview. Patients interacted with the app a median of 9 (P25-P75 1-24) days. At least one medication was registered in the app by 78% (77/99) of patients. A total of 53% (52/99) of participants registered all prescribed inhalers, and 34% (34/99) registered the complete asthma therapeutic plan. Median medication adherence was 75% (P25-P75 25%-90%) for inhalers and 82% (P25-P75 50%-94%) for other drug formulations. Patients were globally satisfied with the app, with 75% (59/79) scoring >= 4,; adherence monitoring, symptom monitoring, and gamification features being the most highly scored components; and the medication detection tool among the lowest scored. A total of 53% (42/79) of the patients stated that the app had motivated them to improve adherence to inhaled medication and 77% (61/79) would recommend the app to other patients. Patient feedback was reflected in 4 major themes: medication-related features (67/79, 85%), gamification and social network (33/79, 42%), symptom monitoring and physician communication (21/79, 27%), and other aspects (16/79, 20%). Conclusions: The InspirerMundi app was feasible and acceptable to monitor medication adherence in patients with asthma. Based on patient feedback and to increase the registering of medications, the therapeutic plan registration and medication detection tool were redesigned. Our results highlight the importance of patient participation to produce a patient-centered and engaging mHealth asthma app.

  • Monitoring Adherence to Asthma Inhalers Using the InspirerMundi App : Analysis of Real-World, Medium-Term Feasibility Studies

InspirerMundi app aims to monitor inhaler adherence while turning it into a positive experience through gamification and social support.Objective: We assessed the medium-term feasibility of the InspirerMundi app to monitor inhaler adherence in real-world patients with persistent asthma (treated with daily inhaled medication). In addition, we attempted to identify the characteristics of the patients related to higher app use.Methods: Two real-world multicenter observational studies, with one initial face-to-face visit and a 4-month telephone interview, were conducted in 29 secondary care centers from Portugal. During an initial face-to-face visit, patients were invited to use the app daily to register their asthma medication intakes. A scheduled intake was considered taken when patients took a photo of the medication (inhaler, blister, or others) using the image-based medication detection tool. Medication adherence was calculated as the number of doses taken as a percentage of the number scheduled. Interacting with the app =30 days was used as the cut-off for higher app use.Results: A total of 114 patients {median 20 [percentile 25 to percentile 75 (P25-P75) 16-36] years, 62% adults} were invited, 107 (94%) installed the app and 83 (73%) completed the 4-month interview. Patients interacted with the app for a median of 18 [3-45] days, translated on a median use rate of 15 [3-38]%. Median inhaler adherence assessed through the app was 34 [4-73]% when considering all scheduled inhalations for the study period. Inhaler adherence assessed was not significantly correlated with self-reported estimates. Median adherence for oral and other medication was 41 [6-83]% and 43 [3-73]%, respectively. Patients with higher app use were slightly older (p = 0.012), more frequently taking medication for other health conditions (p = 0.040), and more frequently prescribed long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA, p = 0.024). After 4 months, Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT) scores improved (p < 0.001), but no differences between patients interacting with the app for 30 days or less were seen.Conclusions: The InspirerMundi app was feasible to monitor inhaler adherence in patients with persistent asthma. The persistent use of this mHealth technology varies widely. A better understanding of characteristics related to higher app use is still needed before effectiveness studies are undertaken.

    • The NEMO&CODED (NEMO) project targets the development of a standard-based software infrastructure, aiming to provide the appropriate support to manage energy-related devices considering an environment where energy is generated, stored, distributed, and consumed in a rational and environmentally correct way. This paper presents and discusses the results achieved so far by the project, with special emphasis on the implementation of a web services-based wrapper to seamlessly integrate new energy sources (renewable ones) into the NEMO network. Such a wrapper relies on the adoption of two standards, namely DPWS and the IEC 61850 series. The former handles service oriented related aspects whilst the latter helps to support the interoperability of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), through the use of the Abstract Communication Service Interface (ACSI) and the Substation Configuration Language (SCL). Main problems raised and solutions found are also included in the paper as well as the future steps to be performed.

    • ObjectivesAnxiety and depression are relevant comorbidities in asthma, but, in Portugal and Spain, data on this topic are scarce. We assessed, in patients with asthma, the frequency of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the European Quality of Life Five Dimension Questionnaire (EQ-5D); the level of agreement between these questionnaires, and the factors associated with these symptoms.MethodsThis is a secondary analysis of the INSPIRERS studies. A total of 614 adolescents and adults with persistent asthma (32.6 +/- 16.9 years, 64.7% female) were recruited from 30 primary care centres and 32 allergy, pulmonology and paediatric clinics. Demographic and clinical characteristics, HADS and EQ-5D were collected. A score >= 8 on Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety/Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression or a positive answer to EQ-5D item 5 indicated the presence of these symptoms. Agreement was determined by Cohen's kappa. Two multivariable logistic regressions were built.ResultsAccording to HADS, 36% of the participants had symptoms of anxiety and 12% of depression. According to EQ-5D, 36% of the participants had anxiety/depression. The agreement between questionnaires in identifying anxiety/depression was moderate (k=0.55, 95% CI 0.48 to 0.62). Late asthma diagnosis, comorbidities and female gender were predictors of anxiety/depression, while better asthma control, health-related quality of life and perception of health were associated with lower odds for anxiety/depression.ConclusionAt least 1/3 of the patients with persistent asthma experience symptoms of anxiety/depression, showing the relevance of screening these disorders in patients with asthma. EQ-5D and HADS questionnaires showed a moderate agreement in the identification of anxiety/depression symptoms. The identified associated factors need to be further investigated in long-term studies.

    • Dynamic and unforeseeable characteristic of the current market and production environment is not feasible to be met through pre-set parameters being dependent on the predictions. Handling this matter requires to keep focus on production system adaptability. Evolvable Production System has achieved fully system reconfigurability through process oriented modularity and multi agent based distributed control system architecture. One of the essential enhancements provided by EPS on the shop floor is achieving minimized/eliminated system setup time in response to changing product requirements.Manufacturing planning and control system, on the other hand, follows hierarchical principles which are quite much reliant on the predicted information so to structure production and planning environment on it. Production system limitations, such as lack of adaptability in response to changing conditions, are in fact influencing the planning system to be structured on the predictions. The enhancements which are ensured by the architecture of EPS enable to relax the constraints on planning system which are imposed by the limitations of production system. These enhancements have an effect at different levels in the planning hierarchy. On the light of these improvements, the planning framework as it is used so far in the industry becomes invalid and this arise a requirement for planning system structure to be designed according to a fully reconfigurable system to be able to benefit such a production system by all means.This thesis targets to enlighten the relation between the production system characteristics and planning system structure by emphasizing the planning problems and proposing a planning reference architecture solution to be able achieve a responsive planning framework.

EAS, as with other similar approaches, offers great opportunities for attaining true agility and cost- effective, stepwise automation. EAS does imply that the manner in which we develop and create projects for the development of assembly systems are radically changed, assuming a more synthesis-based approach.

    • A new paradigm, the Evolvable Assembly Systems (EAS), was recently proposed. This paradigm provides a complete new view on how assembly systems should be designed and developed. Because the control system is one of the key aspects for a successful implementation of EAS this paper proposes a development roadmap to pinpoint directions of research on how control systems should be developed. It is expected that with this information the industry can envision the potential benefits in terms of competitiveness of this approach; still, this paper is especially targeted to motivate researchers from self-organisation and distributed assembly systems to engage in this endeavour together. In particular, topics on self-organisation, emergence, dynamical systems, and distributed artificial intelligence can be the backbone of truly self-adapting assembly systems. In fact EAS seems to be a really demanding and grounded case-study for the referred research communities.

    • The conformational equilibrium of 1,4-dioxane in the gas phase, in the pure liquid, and in aqueous solution has been studied by means of the Average Solvent Electrostatic Potential from Molecular Dynamics (ASEP/MD) method and the Integral Equation Formalism for the Polarizable Continuum Model (IEF-PCM). The dioxane molecule was described at the DFT(B3LYP)/aug-cc-pVTZ level. In the three phases, the equilibrium is almost completely shifted toward the chair conformer, with populations of the twist-boat conformers lower than 0.01 %. The equilibrium is dominated by the internal energy of the molecule, as the solute-solvent interaction free energies are very similar in the three conformers considered (chair, 1,4 twist-boat, and 2,5 twist-boat). In the pure liquid, where the dioxane-dioxane interaction is dominated by the Lennard-Jones term, the structure is characteristic of a van der Waals liquid. However, the decrease in the C-H distance from gas phase to solution, the increase in the C-H vibrational frequencies, and the presence of a shoulder in the O-Haxial pair radial distribution function point to the presence of a weak C-H-O hydrogen bond. The analysis of the occupancy maps of water oxygen and hydrogen atoms around the 1,4-dioxane molecule confirms this conclusion. Contrary to what is found in small water-dioxane clusters, in the liquid, there is a preference for oxygen atoms to interact with axial hydrogen atoms to form C-H-O hydrogen bonds. Comparison of ASEP/MD and IEF-PCM results indicates that including specific interactions is very important for an adequate description of the solute-solvent interaction; however, the influence of these interactions does not translate in changes in the relative stability of the conformers because it cancels out when energy differences are calculated.

    • This thesis presents a systems view of production, where production systems are compared and contrasted with other large and complex systems, commonly labeled System of Systems (SoS). The rationale for this approach lies in the evolution of production systems towards being holistic, sustainable, and agile; which increases the need for an improved understanding of both how internal system are interrelated, and how the production system interacts with its environment. In turn, this leads to an increase of complexity for the production system, which leads to new requirements on systems engineering.The definition of SoS is extensively discussed, and in this thesis formalized with regards to certain system characteristics that SoS exhibit. The presence of these characteristics is evaluated for three different levels of production systems to determine if they should be considered SoS. In the second part of the thesis, the SoS characteristics are addressed from an engineering point of view, i.e. if and how SoS properties are currently addressed in production systems engineering.Two main results are presented in this thesis: (1) production systems exhibit SoS characteristics; (2) SoS characteristics are not and cannot be addressed with current systems engineering methods. How SoS characteristics can be addressed is briefly discussed in the frame of reference.An additional purpose of this thesis is to initiate a new research area where production systems research and complex systems research are merged.

    • The ground and low-lying excited free energy surfaces of 4-amino-4'-cyano azobenzene, a molecule that has been proposed as building block for chiroptical switches, are studied in gas phase and a variety of solvents (benzene, chloroform, acetone, and water). Solvent effects on the absorption and emission spectra and on the cistrans thermal and photo isomerizations are analyzed using two levels of calculation: TD-DFT and CASPT2/CASSCF. The solvent effects are introduced using a polarizable continuum model and a QM/MM method, which permits one to highlight the role played by specific interactions. We found that, in gas phase and in agreement with the results found for other azobenzenes, the thermal cistrans isomerization follows a rotation-assisted inversion mechanism where the inversion angle must reach values close to 180 degrees but where the rotation angle can take almost any value. On the contrary, in polar solvents the mechanism is controlled by the rotation of the CN=NC angle. The change in the mechanism is mainly related to a better solvation of the nitrogen atoms of the azo group in the rotational transition state. The photoisomerization follows a rotational pathway both in gas phase and in polar and nonpolar solvents. The solvent introduces only small modifications in the n pi* free energy surface (S-1), but it has a larger effect on the pi pi* surface (S-2) that, in polar solvents, gets closer to S-1. In fact, the S-2 band of the absorption spectrum is red-shifted 0.27 eV for the trans isomer and 0.17 eV for the cis. In the emission spectrum the trend is similar: only S-2 is appreciably affected by the solvent, but in this case a blue shift is found.

    • Nowadays manufacturing production systems are becoming more and more responsive in order to succeed in ahighly unstable environment. The capability of a production system to effectively and efficiently adapt and evolveto face the changing requirements – imposed by volatile and dynamic global markets – is a necessary conditionto enable manufacturing enterprises to be agile. Since the agility of a manufacturing enterprise is always limitedby the agility of its own building blocks than it needs to be spread over the whole enterprise including the operationand information technologies (OT/IT). Turning to production systems, one of the significant challenges isrepresented by the possibility to provide easy and rapid (re-)configuration of their internal components and/orprocesses. Innovative technologies and paradigms have been explored during the years that combined with theincreasing advancement in manufacturing technologies enable the implementation of the “plug and produce”paradigm. The “plug and produce” paradigm is the foundation of any agile production system, since to be agile itis inevitably required to reduce the installation and (re-)engineering activities time – changing/adapting the systemto new requirements – while promoting configuration rather than programming. Therefore, the “plug andproduce” paradigm is a necessary but not sufficient condition for implementing agile production systems. Modernproduction systems are typically known for their plethora of heterogeneous component/equipment. In this complexscenario, the implementation of the “plug and produce” paradigm implies the existence of a well-definedontological model to support components/equipment abstraction with the objective to allow interactions,collaboration and knowledge sharing between them. The PRIME semantic language specifies the semanticstructure for the knowledge models and overall system communication language.

Such critical changes inevitably have a direct impact on the shop-floor operational requirements. In this sense, a number of innovative production paradigms emerged, providing the necessary theoretical background to such systems. Due to similarities between innovative modular production floors and natural complex systems, modern paradigms theoretically rely on bio-inspired concepts to attain the characteristics of biological systems. Nevertheless, during the implementation phase, bio-inspired principles tend to be left behind in favor of more traditional approaches, resulting in simple distributed systems with considerable limitations regarding scalability, reconfigurable ability and distributed problem resolution.This paper analyzes and presents a brief critical review on how bio-inspired concepts are currently being explored in the manufacturing environment, in an attempt to formulate a number of challenges and properties that need to be considered in order to implement manufacturing systems that closely follow the biological principles and consequently present overall characteristics of complex natural systems.

Nevertheless the retrieval and visualization of information in distributed systems is a relatively unexplored area. Although the dynamic nature of the multi-agent systems allows gathering information in a prompt manner, doing so might affect the performance of the mechatronic agents. In this sense, the present paper details the architecture of a visualization tool that introduces a reliable but non-invasive approach to retrieve data from distributed platforms as well as a new way to visualize and interpret the information gathered from mechatronic based systems.

    • Modern manufacturing organizations have to cope with several critical issues arising from the need for mass customization such as short product life-cycles, an increasing number of product variants and frequently changing customer requirements. One of the main factors that could aid overcoming those challenges is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) applications over a collaborative manufacturing environment, in which all stakeholders share and exchange knowledge across different manufacturing domains and applications. However, the use of ICT applications over a collaborative manufacturing environment is limited at the domain level by semantic conflicts arising from the use of different ways to describe the same objects and facts arising from different conceptualizations. Similarly, ICT usage is limited on the application level by interoperability problems arising from diverse heterogeneity between different ICT applications and tools.This research presents a semantic approach to support knowledge sharing within the assembly domain. More specifically, this research is focusing on capturing and sharing assembly design knowledge and integrating the assembly design domain and the Assembly Process Planning (APP) domain. Assembly design and APP are very important engineering domains for successful manufacturing system design, which requires an efficient collaborative environment for best utilization of the assembly resources. However, though these domains represent different perspectives in understanding of the same concepts, both domains use different software applications, which might cause interoperability issues.In this thesis, a novel integration approach has been proposed; this approach is composed of two stages: the first stage includes modelling and recognition of assembly knowledge semantics from SolidWorks (SW) CAD software by using SolidWorks’ Application Programmable Interface (SW-API). The second stage includes sharing the recognized assembly knowledge semantics by using a knowledge-based system in the form of a three-layer ontology architecture which provides a common semantic base to support knowledge sharing across assembly design and APP both on the domain and the application level. Each ontology layer shares a set of concepts from the most generic level to the most specialized level. The foundation ontology layer represents the general key concepts in the assembly design and APP domains. More specialized assembly design concepts and APP concepts are represented both in the domain ontology layer, and the application ontology layer. In the latter, concepts related to SolidWorks CAD software and to assembly robotic devices are represented.

  • Comparasion of two minimally invasive methods on the longevity of glass ionomer cement restorations : short-term results of a pilot study

    • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of glass ionomer cement (GIC) restorations comparing two minimally invasive methods in permanent teeth after 12 months. Fifty pregnant women (second trimester of pregnancy), mean age 22 ± 5.30 years, were treated by two previously trained operators. The treatment approaches tested were: chemomechanical method (CarisolvTM; MediTeam) and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART). A split-mouth study design was used in which the two treatments were randomly placed in 50 matched pairs of permanent teeth. The chemomechanical method (CM) was the test group and the ART was the control group. The treatments were performed in Public Health Centers. The tested restorative material was a high-strength GIC (Ketac Molar; 3M/ESPE). The restorations were placed according to the ART guidelines. Two calibrated independent examiners evaluated the restorations in accordance with ART criteria. The inter-examiner kappa was 0.97. Data were analyzed using 95% confidence interval on the binomial distribution and Fisher's exact test at 5% significance level. In a 12-month follow-up, 86% of the restorations were evaluated. In the test group (CM), 100% (CI=93.3-100%) of the restorations were considered successful. In the control group (ART) 97.6% (CI=87.4-99.9%) of the restorations were considered successful and 2.4% unsuccessful (marginal defect >0.5 mm). There was no statistically significant difference between the 12-mounth success rate for both groups (Fisher's exact test: P=0.49) and between the two operators (Fisher's exact test: P=1.00). Both minimally invasive methods, chemomechanical method and ART, showed a similar clinical performance after 12 months of follow up. Key words: Clinical trials. Restorations. Glass ionomer cements. Such critical changes in the strategic vision of the companies inevitably have a direct impact on the shop-floor operational requirements. In this sense, traditional shop-floor approaches are becoming increasingly inadequate leading to the adoption of more pluggable and reusable solutions.The emergence o modern manufacturing paradigms translates the effort undertaken by the academia in order to provide the required background to support the implementation of such distributed mechatronic systems. Biological systems, due to their similar distributed network-like structure, represent naturally a common analogy and source of inspiration for such distributed modular approaches. Hence, modern manufacturing paradigms usually rely on complexity science biologically inspired concepts to attain distributed control, adaptability, evolution, flexibility and robustness as core concepts. This originated the implementation of a number of different multi-agent based architectures. Nevertheless, with time the majority of the these implementation efforts left behind most of the bio-inspired concepts resulting in simple distributed approaches with considerable limitations regarding scalability, reconfigurability and distributed problem resolution. Particularly under the scope of Evolvable Production System (EPS) the implementation of self-organising mechanisms based on negotiation interaction protocols and dynamic coalition-based hierarchical complexity, have considerable hindered the system performance and limited the full exploitation of the paradigm potential.In this context, this licentiate thesis is focused on the development of a self-organising manufacturing systems that holistically mimics the main structural and regulatory principles followed by natural systems.For this purpose, the present approach was designed as opposed to the current tendency followed by modern productions approaches, in which the product holds the production knowledge and is responsible for the management of its own production. Instead, the production knowledge was reduced to the minimum and distributed over the manufacturing components. Self-organising principles heavily inspired on the regulatory mechanisms of biological systems, were then devised to regulate the critical control mechanisms of the manufacturing system. Hence, similarly to the natural world the characteristics and the system overall production emerge as consequence of the micro-dynamics of the systems. In this way, it becomes therefore possible to attain a system that is not only highly reconfigurable and scalable but also able to distributively tackle the manufacturing processes.Although the present work has been developed under the Evolvable Production System context, the introduced approach can be easily adapted to a wider range of modular networked-based systems.

    • The aim of this article is to develop the concept of time-space complexity as a way of discussing how territorial time-space production affects urban life and use. The discussion is based on a comparative study of opening hours in four centrally located European retail areas: Angers, Lisbon, Malmö and Porto. Following a comparative study of these areas, we discuss tendencies of temporal and spatial homogenisation, the production of ever-more distinctive time-spaces, and also initiate a discussion on the trend of city á la carte. Finally we argue that discussions of time-space complexity need to be taken more seriously in research on urban development, and that the issue of spatio-temporal homogenisation need to be handled more actively in urban planning and design.

The whole chain of actors involved in the generation, distribution, and consumption of energy are not only concerned but also acting towards a more rational and efficient use of energy. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources also reflects the seriousness of the subject and helps to set up the current landscape on this matter. This is the rationale driving the NEMO&CODED (NEMO) project, which targets the development of a software infrastructure, based on web services and semantic resources aiming to provide the appropriate support to manage energy-related devices (e.g. renewable energy sources, smart meters, etc.) considering an environment where energy is generated, stored, distributed, and consumed in a rational and environmentally correct way. This shall be attained through the comprehensive implementation and instantiation of computational intelligence at resource level and the development of mechanisms that enable the seamless, and online, control/monitoring of aggregations of resources. This paper discusses the NEMO project, namely its vision, goals, preliminary software architecture, evaluation and assessment scenarios, and also points out the further work (research, design, and implementation) to be performed.

    • The emerging of the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 (I4.0), from the advancement in several technologies is viewed not only to promote economic growth, but also to enable a greener future. The 2030 Agenda of the United Nations for sustainable development sets out clear goals for the industry to foster the economy, while preserving social well-being and ecological validity. However, the influence of I4.0 technologies on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) has not been conclusively or systematically investigated. By understanding the link between the I4.0 technologies and the SDGs, researchers can better support policymakers to consider the technological advancement in updating and harmonizing policies and strategies in different sectors (i.e., education, industry, and governmental) with the SDGs. To address this gap, academic experts in this paper have investigated the influence of I4.0 technologies on the sustainability targets identified by the UN. Key I4.0 element technologies have been classified to enable a quantitative mapping with the 17 SDGs. The results indicate that the majority of the I4.0 technologies can contribute positively to achieving the UN agenda. It was also found that the effects of the technologies on individual goals varies between direct and strong, and indirect and weak influences. The main insights and lessons learned from the mapping are provided to support future policy.

This has generated a very articulated concept, spanning from capability of a system to increase the production volumes to ability to handle product mix variation. Several authors have tried to count the current meanings of such a word in manufacturing and someone arrived to more than 50!. In spite of this fuzziness in both the definition and scope, the concept of flexibility remain one of the cornerstones in the curriculum of industrial and production engineers, and it appears in many courses along the bachelor and master studies. The apparent paradox that higher education institutions have to teach things that are not even well-defined and agreed in the scientific world is, in fact, quite a usual practice. In order to clarify what is, or should be, learnt this work analyzes first the established literature to extract a “working” characterization of the flexibility concept. The resulting understanding is then used to represent the experts’ perception of the topic which in turn is used as ideal level of understanding that a student should achieve her/himself when studying such a concept.   The second phase of the work aims at disclosing and classifying the multifaceted perceptions of flexibility that two different classes of industrial engineering students have after two courses in which the focal concept of manufacturing flexibility has been presented using two different approaches. The research is based on a phenomenographic analysis of a series of well-designed interviews to the students. The collected data have consequently been structured in a finite set of clusters according of: (1) the level of understanding of the key concept (as expressed in the Bloom’s taxonomy) and (2) the nature of the shown knowledge (as presented in the SOLO taxonomy). The classification is then the basis for defining an epistemological sound approach to develop suitable teaching and learning activities to ensure optimal acquisition of the concept of flexibility.

In accordance with these recommendations, the Evolvable Production Systems (EPS) has aimed at developing such technological solutions and support mechanisms. Since its inception in 2002 as a next generation of production systems, the concept is being further developed and tested to emerge as a production system paradigm. Characteristically, Evolvable systems have distributed control, and are composed of intelligent modules with embedded control. A concerted effort is being exerted through European research projects in collaboration with manufacturers, technology/equipment suppliers, and universities. After introducing EPS, this paper presents current developments and applications.

    • Simulation has played an important role along the years to predict systems' behaviour before their deployment. In the case of self-organising mechatronic systems simulation tools can help researchers and practitioners understanding the full potential of the solution as well as its underlying limitations. Self-organising mechatronic systems have passed a feasibility study and presented promising results. However they are rarely explored in industry in part due to the lack of methods to support their design and configuration and the difficulty to predict the systems' behaviour before their deployment. Given the cost and development time associated with building self-organising mechatronic systems this research problem has been left quite unattended. In this article we present a tool that enables the creation and simulation of Evolvable Production Systems and their self-organising behaviour. The generated operational results can posteriorly be used to analyse the suitability of different design and configuration alternatives for different product types and volumes.

    • Purpose - This paper aims to provide a method and decision support tool to enhance swift reconfiguration of Plug&Produce (P&P) systems in the presence of continuously changing production orders. Design/methodology/approach - The paper reviews different production scenarios and system design and configuration methods and more particularly specifies the need of decision support tools for P&P systems that integrate configuration and planning activities. This problem is then addressed by proposing a method that helps reduce the solution space of the reconfiguration problem and allows the timely selection of the most promising reconfiguration alternative. Findings - The proposed method was found to be helpful in reducing the reconfiguration alternatives that need to be considered and in selecting the most promising one for different orders. The advantages and limitations of this method are identified, and an illustrative test case of the approach is presented, corroborating the method applicability in the absence of large queues in the system. Originality/value - This paper addresses a less explored domain within the P&P systems research field, which is the system reconfiguration. It proposed a method to support system validation and reconfiguration jointly with an illustrative test case. This represents an original contribution to the P&P research field, and it can have impact in improving agility and decreasing the complexity of reconfiguration activities to cope with constantly changing production orders.

    • Presented in 2002, and applied within the EUPASS and A3 projects, Evolvable Assembly Systems proposes a novel way of applying assembly systems in industry. The essence of EAS resides not only in the ability of system components to adapt to the changing conditions of operation, but also to assist in the evolution of these components in time such that processes may become more robust. The main features of Evolvable systems include distributed control, a modularized, intelligent and open architecture, and a comprehensive and multi dimensional methodological support that comprises the reference architecture. The work has been, and is being, implemented through large European research projects. Evolvability being a system concept, it is envisaged to address every aspect of an assembly system throughout its life cycle, Le., design and development, operation and evolution. Furthermore, integration of legacy subsystems and modules have been addressed in the methodology. This article will present the latest developments, applications and conclusions drawn to date.

    • Presented in 2002, and applied within the EUPASS[1] and A3 [1]projects, Evolvable Assembly Systems (EAS) proposes a novel way of applying assembly systems in industry. The essence of EAS resides in the ability of system components to adapt to the changing conditions of operation, but also to assist in the evolution of these components in time such that processes may become more robust. The system modules are derived from precise product process requirements, thus creating a dynamic product-production link. Its methodology supports maintenance aspects, and legacy systems may be integrated. EAS also enforces the idea that ubiquitous computing and distributed control are best suited for such endeavors.     • This paper addresses the underlying principles of Evolvable Assembly Systems. This paradigm was recently proposed as an answer to the requirements faced by assembly companies in the current world of business and technological changes. The basis for this new approach lies in a multi-disciplinary study of the needs and requirements, and shifts the technological focus from complex, flexible, multi-purpose systems to simpler, process-oriented, dedicated swarms of machine modules.

    • Current major roadmapping efforts have all clearly underlined that true industrial sustainability will require far higher levels of systems’ autonomy and adaptability. In accordance with these recommendations, the Evolvable Production Systems (EPS) has aimed at developing such technological solutions and support mechanisms. Since its inception in 2002 as a next generation of production systems, the concept is being further developed and tested to emerge as a production system paradigm. Characteristically, Evolvable systems have distributed control, and are composed of intelligent modules with embedded control. A concerted effort is being exerted through European research projects in collaboration with manufacturers, technology/equipment suppliers, and universities. After introducing EPS, this paper presents current developments and applications, with specific emphasis on principles and mechatronic applications.

Since its inception in 2002 as a next generation ofproduction systems, the concept is being further developed and tested to emerge as a production systemparadigm. The essence of evolvability resides not only in the ability of system components to adapt to thechanging conditions of operation, but also to assist in the evolution of these components in time such thatprocesses may become self-evolvable, self-reconfigurable, self-tuning, self-diagnosing, etc.Characteristically, Evolvable systems have distributed control, and are composed of intelligent moduleswith embedded control. To assist the development and life cycle issues, a comprehensive methodologicalframework is being developed. A concerted effort is being exerted through European research projects incollaboration with European manufacturers, technology/equipment suppliers, and universities. Afterbriefly stating the fundamental concepts of EPS, this paper presents current developments and applications.
