  • Becoming war: Towards a martial empiricism
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Security Dialogue. - : SAGE Publications. - 0967-0106 .- 1460-3640. ; 51:2-3, s. 99-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Under the banner of martial empiricism, we advance a distinctive set of theoretical and methodological commitments for the study of war. Previous efforts to wrestle with this most recalcitrant of phenomena have sought to ground research upon primary definitions or foundational ontologies of war. By contrast, we propose to embrace war’s incessant becoming, making its creativity, mutability and polyvalence central to our enquiry. Leaving behind the interminable quest for its essence, we embrace war as mystery. We draw on a tradition of radical empiricism to devise a conceptual and contextual mode of enquiry that can follow the processes and operations of war wherever they lead us. Moving beyond the instrumental appropriations of strategic thought and the normative strictures typical of critical approaches, martial empiricism calls for an unbounded investigation into the emergent and generative character of war. Framing the accompanying special issue, we outline three domains around which to orient future research: mobilization, design and encounter. Martial empiricism is no idle exercise in philosophical speculation. It holds the promise of a research agenda apposite to the task of fully contending with the momentous possibilities and dangers of war in our time.

  • ARIA digital anamorphosis : Digital transformation of health and care in airway diseases from research to practice
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Allergy. European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0105-4538 .- 1398-9995. ; 76:1, s. 168-190
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital anamorphosis is used to define a distorted image of health and care that may be viewed correctly using digital tools and strategies. MASK digital anamorphosis represents the process used by MASK to develop the digital transformation of health and care in rhinitis. It strengthens the ARIA change management strategy in the prevention and management of airway disease. The MASK strategy is based on validated digital tools. Using the MASK digital tool and the CARAT online enhanced clinical framework, solutions for practical steps of digital enhancement of care are proposed.

  • Development and implementation of guidelines in allergic rhinitis – an ARIA-GA2LEN paper.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Allergy. - : Wiley. - 1398-9995 .- 0105-4538. ; 65:10, s. 1212-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The links between asthma and rhinitis are well characterized. The Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines stress the importance of these links and provide guidance for their prevention and treatment. Despite effective treatments being available, too few patients receive appropriate medical care for both diseases. Most patients with rhinitis and asthma consult primary care physicians and therefore these physicians are encouraged to understand and use ARIA guidelines. Patients should also be informed about these guidelines to raise their awareness of optimal care and increase control of the two related diseases. To apply these guidelines, clinicians and patients need to understand how and why the recommendations were made. The goal of the ARIA guidelines is to provide recommendations about the best management options for most patients in most situations. These recommendations should be based on the best available evidence. Making recommendations requires the assessment of the quality of available evidence, deciding on the balance between benefits and downsides, consideration of patients’ values and preferences, and, if applicable, resource implications. Guidelines must be updated as new management options become available or important new evidence emerges. Transparent reporting of guidelines facilitates understanding and acceptance, but implementation strategies need to be improved.

  • Improvement of separation and dewatering of activated sludge by using enhanced biological removal process over chemical phosphorus precipitation
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Residuals Science and Technology. - 1544-8053. ; 3:3, s. 145-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Samples from several WWTPs in Sweden, operating either with chemical precipitation of phosphorus, biological phosphorus removal or combination of the two, were analysed for separation and dewatering properties. The main parameters of interest were capillary suction time (CST), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), metal ions concentration, filterability and compressibility of the sludge. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR)-sludge is composed of compact flocs, while the chemical sludge contains higher colloids concentration in the liquid phase and retain water within the floc structure by stronger physical forces. These two phenomena reflected in the poorer filterability as well as compressibility of the chemical sludge in comparison to the sludge originating from biological phosphorus removal processes.

  • Researching “Digital War” : terminological snares, conceptual pitfalls, and methodological hazards
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Digital War. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2662-1975 .- 2662-1983. ; :1, s. 159-163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article traces some of the intellectual lines of force concomitant to the constitution of a research field of Digital War.It submits that, while it may serve as a convenient shorthand for information and communication technologies concordantwith common parlance, the concept of the “digital” cannot in itself provide a dependable referent for demarcating such aninvestigative terrain. This consideration raises in turn a series of further conceptual, methodological, and empirical challengesfor scholars working in this emerging field, among which are the deep history of information technologies and their martialentanglements, the requirements of scientific and technical literacy, and engagement with the philosophy of technology

  • Association of Body Mass Index with DNA Methylation and Gene Expression in Blood Cells and Relations to Cardiometabolic Disease : A Mendelian Randomization Approach
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PLoS Medicine. - : PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE. - 1549-1277 .- 1549-1676. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The link between DNA methylation, obesity, and adiposity-related diseases in the general population remains uncertain. Methods and Findings We conducted an association study of body mass index (BMI) and differential methylation for over 400,000 CpGs assayed by microarray in whole-blood-derived DNA from 3,743 participants in the Framingham Heart Study and the Lothian Birth Cohorts, with independent replication in three external cohorts of 4,055 participants. We examined variations in whole blood gene expression and conducted Mendelian randomization analyses to investigate the functional and clinical relevance of the findings. We identified novel and previously reported BMI-related differential methylation at 83 CpGs that replicated across cohorts; BMI-related differential methylation was associated with concurrent changes in the expression of genes in lipid metabolism pathways. Genetic instrumental variable analysis of alterations in methylation at one of the 83 replicated CpGs, cg11024682 (intronic to sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 [SREBF1]), demonstrated links to BMI, adiposity-related traits, and coronary artery disease. Independent genetic instruments for expression of SREBF1 supported the findings linking methylation to adiposity and cardiometabolic disease. Methylation at a substantial proportion (16 of 83) of the identified loci was found to be secondary to differences in BMI. However, the cross-sectional nature of the data limits definitive causal determination. Conclusions We present robust associations of BMI with differential DNA methylation at numerous loci in blood cells. BMI-related DNA methylation and gene expression provide mechanistic insights into the relationship between DNA methylation, obesity, and adiposity-related diseases.

  • Ernst Jünger and the problem of nihilism in the age of total war
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Thesis Eleven. - : SAGE Publications. - 0725-5136 .- 1461-7455. ; 132:1, s. 17-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a singular witness and actor of the tumultuous 20th century, Ernst Jünger remains a controversial and enigmatic figure known above all for his vivid autobiographical accounts of experience in the trenches of the First World War. This article will argue that throughout his entire oeuvre, from personal diaries to novels and essays, he never ceased to grapple with what he viewed as the central question of the age, namely that of the problem of nihilism and the means to overcome it. Inherited from Nietzsche’s diagnosis of Western civilization in the late 19th century, to which he added an acute observation of the particular role of technology within it, Jünger would employ this lens to make sense of the seemingly absurd industrial slaughter of modern war and herald the advent of a new voluntarist and bellicist order that was to imminently sweep away timorous and decadent bourgeois societies obsessed with security and self-preservation. Jünger would ultimately see his expectations dashed, including by the forms of rule that National Socialism would take, and eventually retreated into a reclusive quietism. Yet he never abandoned his central problematique of nihilism, developing it further in exchanges with Martin Heidegger after the Second World War. And for all the ways in which he may have erred, his life-long struggle with meaning in the age of technique and its implications for war and security continues to make Jünger a valuable interlocutor of the present.

  • Examining Associations Between Psychopathic Traits and Executive Functions in Incarcerated Violent Offenders
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-0640. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Executive functions (EFs) are essential in almost all aspects of daily life and have been robustly related to antisocial behavior. However, the relationship between psychopathy and EFs has remained equivocal. Research investigating lower-level trait dimensions of psychopathy using standardized EF measures could be beneficial in addressing this issue. In this study, we examined associations between four EFs and four dimensions of psychopathic traits (interpersonal, affective, lifestyle, antisocial) using zero-order correlation and a combination of classical and Bayesian statistical methods. Two hundred and fourteen incarcerated male violent offenders were assessed with the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised and completed tests of cognitive flexibility, spatial working memory, response inhibition, and planning and problem-solving using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery. Lifestyle psychopathic traits were significantly associated with reduced initial thinking time in a planning and problem-solving task, with a Bayes factor indicating substantial evidence for the observed correlation, and antisocial psychopathic traits showed a significant association with reduced initial thinking time in the same task, although the Bayes factor indicated only anecdotal evidence. Significant associations were also found between affective and antisocial psychopathic traits and less efficient strategic thinking in a spatial working memory task, and between affective, lifestyle and antisocial psychopathic traits and fewer problems solved in a planning and problem-solving task, although these findings were not corroborated by the Bayesian analysis. While the observed effects ranged between small and medium, our study suggests that reduced initial thinking times in planning and problem-solving is robustly associated with higher degrees of lifestyle and antisocial psychopathic traits.

  • Androgens and Glucuronidated Androgen Metabolites are Associated with Metabolic Risk Factors in Men.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X .- 1945-7197. ; 92:11, s. 4130-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: Androgens are associated with metabolic risk factors in men. However, the independent impact of androgens and androgen metabolites on metabolic risk factors in men is unclear. Objective: Our objective was to determine the predictive value of serum levels of androgens and glucuronidated androgen metabolites for metabolic risk factors. Design and Study Subjects: We conducted a population-based study of two Swedish cohorts (1068 young adult and 1001 elderly men). Main Outcome Measures: We measured correlation of serum dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone (T) and glucuronidated androgen metabolites with fat mass, fat distribution, serum lipids and insulin resistance. Results: Both DHT and T were negatively associated with different measures of fat mass in both cohorts (P<0.001). Further statistical analysis indicated that DHT, but not T, was independently negatively associated with different measures of fat mass and insulin resistance (P<0.001). The glucuronidated androgen metabolite androstane-3alpha,17beta-diol-17glucuronide (17G) was independently positively associated with fat mass (P<0.001). Most importantly, the 17G/DHT ratio was strongly correlated, not only with fat mass, but also with central fat distribution, intra-hepatic fat, disturbed lipid profile, insulin resistance and diabetes, explaining a substantial part of the total variance in total body fat (12% in young adult men, 15% in elderly men), the HOMA index (10%) and HDL cholesterol (7%). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that 17-glucuronidation of the DHT metabolite androstane-3alpha,17beta-diol is strongly associated with several metabolic risk factors in men. Future longitudinal studies are required to determine the possible impact of the 17G/DHT ratio as a metabolic risk factor in men.
