  • MBL1 genotypes in wild boar populations from Sweden, Austria, the Czech Republic and Japan
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Immunogenetics. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 1744-3121 .- 1744-313X. ; 40:2, s. 131-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) G949T in the mannose-binding lectin (MBL) 1 gene has been associated with low MBL-A concentration in serum and detected at different frequencies in various European pig populations. However, the origin of this SNP is not known. Part of the MBL1 gene was sequenced in 12 wild boar/Large White crossbred pigs from the second backcross (BC 2) generation in a family material originating from two wild boar x Large White intercrosses. Also, MBL-A serum concentration was measured in the entire BC 2 generation (n = 45). Furthermore, the genotypes of 68 wild boars from Sweden, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Japan were determined in regard to five previously described SNPs in MBL1. The T allele of G949T was present among the BC 2 animals. MBL-A serum concentration in the BC 2 animals showed a bimodal distribution, with one-third of the animals at levels between 0.7 and 1.6 μg mL−1 and the remaining pigs at levels around 13 μg mL−1. There was a co-variation between the presence of the T allele and low MBL-A concentration in serum. The genotyping of the wild boars revealed differences between populations. The T allele of G949T was not detected in the Austrian and Japanese samples and is thus unlikely to be an original feature of wild boars. In contrast, it was present at high frequency (0.35) among the Swedish wild boars, probably representing a founder effect. Five MBL1 haplotypes were resolved. Only two of these were present among the Japanese wild boars compared to four in each of the European populations. This difference may reflect differences in selection pressure and population history.

  • Fictional Death and Scientific Truth: The Truth-value of Science in Contemporary Forensic Crime Fiction
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Clues: A Journal of Detection. - 1940-3046. ; 30:1, s. 88-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The author explores the relationship between science and truth in forensic crime fiction by analysis of narrative and media specific constituents of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Cornwell’s The Scarpetta Factor. Both are found to convey strong bonds between science and truth, and readers/viewers are likely to assume that this is the case also in the external world.

  • Girls Just Wanna be Smart? The Depiction of Women Scientists in Contemporary Crime Fiction
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gender, Science and Technology. - 2040-0748. ; 4:3, s. 313-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Portrayals of fictional scientists influence how the public perceive real scientists, and fictional scientists might serve as role models as well as inspire career choices. Crime fiction is probably the most popular fiction genre today, and fictional scientists are an important presence in the genre. This is an exploratory study of three well-known contemporary women crime fiction scientists, taken from literature, television, and film. The examples are compared and contrasted with previous studies of women scientists in fiction, as well as, more specifically, studies of women investigators in crime fiction. The women scientists in the samples are found to be skilled experts in their fields, appreciated and respected by their peers, and making essential contributions to the solving of crimes. Nevertheless, they are simultaneously treated like children, as well as objects of sexual desire, by their co-workers, and most likely also perceived that way by the actual consumers, the viewers and readers of this fiction. Although these fictional women scientists might be ideal role models in many senses, their infantilization and sexualization signifies that the world of science is still far from gender equal.

  • Kriminallitteratur : utveckling, genrer, perspektiv
  • 2011

  • Codex and Code : Aestethcis, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media, NORLIT 2009, Stockholm, August 6-9, 2009
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conference Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media (NorLit 2009)was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, August 6–9, 2009. The conference was organized by the Nordic Association for Comparative Literature (NorLit); the Department of Culture and Communication, Linköping University; the School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH); the Department of Comparative Literature, Stockholm University; the Department of Culture and Communication, Södertörn University College; and the Department of Comparative Literature, Uppsala University.    The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. As the title for the conference suggests, the principal question for the conference was the challenge that the study of literature encounters in an age of digitalization and globalization. It was our aim to encourage discussion of how literary studies respond to the ongoing changes in media and technology, politics and economy. Many have argued that the Humanities currently are in a state of crisis. We believe that the discipline seldom has found itself in such an interesting and fruitful historical moment. Several of these questions have surfaced during earlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation.    The conference Codex and Code wanted to stimulate interdisciplinary scholarly research of the literary in a broad sense. The conference was open to scholars in Comparative Literature and in Classical and Modern Languages, Aesthetics, Media and Communication studies, Film and Theatre studies, Philosophy and adjacent disciplines. The conference was organized around a number of thematic sessions in which researchers and scholars presented and discussed papers.    The conference has received generous financial support from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Magnus Bergwall foundation, Granholms foundation, Linköping University, School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology, Svenska litteratursällskapet; the Swedish Academy, Swedish Science Council, and Vitterhetsakademien.

  • Mediernas betydelse för skapandet av två "deckardrottningars" varumärken
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: NORLIT 2009: Codex and Code, Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media, Stockholm, August 6-9, 2009. - 1650-3740 .- 1650-3686. ; , s. 467-484

  • A pH-dependent dimer lock in spider silk protein
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Academic Press. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 404:2, s. 328-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spider dragline silk, one of the strongest polymers in nature, is composed of proteins termed major ampullate spidroin (MaSp) 1 and MaSp2. The N-terminal (NT) domain of MaSp1 produced by the nursery web spider Euprosthenops australis acts as a pH-sensitive relay, mediating spidroin assembly at around pH 6.3. Using amide hydrogen/deuterium exchange combined with mass spectrometry (MS), we detected pH-dependent changes in deuterium incorporation into the core of the NT domain, indicating global structural stabilization at low pH. The stabilizing effects were diminished or abolished at high ionic strength, or when the surface-exposed residues Asp40 and Glu84 had been exchanged with the corresponding amides. Nondenaturing electrospray ionization MS revealed the presence of dimers in the gas phase at pH values below--but not above--6.4, indicating a tight electrostatic association that is dependent on Asp40 and Glu84 at low pH. Results from analytical ultracentrifugation support these findings. Together, the data suggest a mechanism whereby lowering the pH to <6.4 results in structural changes and alteration of charge-mediated interactions between subunits, thereby locking the spidroin NT dimer into a tight entity important for aggregation and silk formation.

  • State of the art and recommendations. Kangaroo mother care : application in a high-tech environment
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 18:3, s. 21-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) was developed in Colombia in the 1970s, two trends in clinical application emerged. In low income settings, the original KMC model is implemented. This consists of continuous (24 h/day, 7 days/week) and prolonged mother/parent-infant skin-to-skin contact; early discharge with the infant in the kangaroo position; (ideally) exclusive breastfeeding; and, adequate follow-up. In affluent settings, intermittent KMC with sessions of one or a few hours skin-to-skin contact for a limited period is common. As a result of the increasing evidence of the benefits of KMC for both infants and families in all intensive care settings, KMC in a high-tech environment was chosen as the topic for the first European Conference on KMC, and the clinical implementation of the KMC model in all types of settings was discussed at the 7th International Workshop on KMC. Kangaroo Mother Care protocols in high-tech Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) should specify criteria for initiation, kangaroo position, transfer to/from KMC, transport in kangaroo position, kangaroo nutrition, parents' role, modification of the NICU environment, performance of care in KMC, and KMC in case of infant instability. Conclusion: Implementation of the original KMC method, with continuous skin-to-skin contact whenever possible, is recommended for application in high-tech environments, although scientific evaluation should continue.

  • Towards universal Kangaroo Mother Care : recommendations and report from the First European conference and Seventh International Workshop on Kangaroo Mother Care
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 99:6, s. 820-826
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hallmark of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is the kangaroo position: the infant is cared for skin-to-skin vertically between the mother's breasts and below her clothes, 24 h/day, with father/substitute(s) participating as KMC providers. Intermittent KMC (for short periods once or a few times per day, for a variable number of days) is commonly employed in high-tech neonatal intensive care units. These two modalities should be regarded as a progressive adaptation of the mother-infant dyad, ideally towards continuous KMC, starting gradually and progressively with intermittent KMC. The other components in KMC are exclusive breastfeeding (ideally) and early discharge in kangaroo position with strict follow-up. Current evidence allows the following general statements about KMC in affluent and low-income settings: KMC enhances bonding and attachment; reduces maternal postpartum depression symptoms; enhances infant physiologic stability and reduces pain, increases parental sensitivity to infant cues; contributes to the establishment and longer duration of breastfeeding and has positive effects on infant development and infant/parent interaction. Therefore, intrapartum and postnatal care in all types of settings should adhere to a paradigm of nonseparation of infants and their mothers/families. Preterm/low-birth-weight infants should be regarded as extero-gestational foetuses needing skin-to-skin contact to promote maturation. Conclusion: Kangaroo Mother Care should begin as soon as possible after birth, be applied as continuous skin-to-skin contact to the extent that this is possible and appropriate and continue for as long as appropriate.

  • Preschool children born moderately preterm have increased waist circumference at two years of age despite low body mass index
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 101:11, s. 1175-1181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To investigate the development of waist circumference (WC) in preschool children born preterm compared with a population-based reference.BACKGROUND: Children born preterm are reported to be insulin resistant, despite being lean during early childhood. We hypothesize that the mechanism is through increased visceral adiposity.METHODS: Data from 4446 preschool children (2169 girls/2277 boys) born in 2001-2006 from a population-based study were compared with longitudinal measurements of body mass index (BMI) and WC from a cohort of 152 children (64 girls/88 boys) born moderately preterm in 2002-2004 (gestational age, 32-37 weeks).RESULTS: In the preterm children, the mean WC was 2.8 cm larger compared with the reference group (p < 0.001) at 2 years of age but not at 5 years of age. There was no significant difference in the mean BMI at 2 years of age. The preterm group was significantly leaner at 5 years of age, with a mean BMI of 15.13 compared with 15.98 in the reference group (p < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Children born moderately preterm present as lean during early childhood but have an increased waist circumference in infancy, pointing towards a change in fat distribution with more abdominal fat. This may have implications for their metabolic status.
