  • Revised rates for the stellar triple-alpha process from measurement of C-12 nuclear resonances
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687 .- 1476-4679. ; 433:7022, s. 136-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the centres of stars where the temperature is high enough, three alpha-particles (helium nuclei) are able to combine to form C-12 because of a resonant reaction leading to a nuclear excited state(1). (Stars with masses greater than similar to0.5 times that of the Sun will at some point in their lives have a central temperature high enough for this reaction to proceed.) Although the reaction rate is of critical significance for determining elemental abundances in the Universe(1), and for determining the size of the iron core of a star just before it goes supernova(2), it has hitherto been insufficiently determined(2). Here we report a measurement of the inverse process, where a C-12 nucleus decays to three alpha-particles. We find a dominant resonance at an energy of similar to11 MeV, but do not confirm the presence of a resonance at 9.1 MeV (ref. 3). We show that interference between two resonances has important effects on our measured spectrum. Using these data, we calculate the triple-a rate for temperatures from 10(7) K to 10(10) K and find significant deviations from the standard rates(3). Our rate below similar to5 x 10(7) K is higher than the previous standard, implying that the critical amounts of carbon that catalysed hydrogen burning in the first stars are produced twice as fast as previously believed(4). At temperatures above 10(9) K, our rate is much less, which modifies predicted nucleosynthesis in supernovae(5,6).

  • Low energy reactions with radioactive ions at REX-ISOLDE - the Li-9+H-2 case
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 748, s. 374-374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the newly constructed postaccelerator REX-ISOLDE (Radioactive beam Experiment at ISOLDE) we have investigated reactions induced by a Li-9 beam incident on a deuterium target at an energy of 2.36 MeV/u. Most reaction channels were recorded. From one-neutron transfer the differential cross-section for the low lying Li-10 spectrum is found. The results from the other channels demonstrate the great applicability and many possibilities that REX-ISOLDE opens up.

    • The Click to view the MathML source reaction has been investigated at 2.36 MeV/u at the REX-ISOLDE facility. In this Letter we focus on the Click to view the MathML source channel which potentially holds spectroscopic information on the unbound nucleus 10Li. The experimental excitation energy spectrum and angular distribution are compared with CCBA calculations. These calculations clearly support the existence of a low-lying (s) virtual state, with a (negative) scattering length of the order asnot, vert, similar1324 fm and a p1/2 resonance with an energy of Ersimilar, equals0.38 MeV and a width of Γsimilar, equals0.2 MeV.

  • Study of $[$beta$]$-delayed 3-body and 5-body breakup channels observed in the decay of 11Li
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. ; 810, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The [beta]-delayed charged particle emission from 11Li has been studied with emphasis on the three-body n[alpha]6He and five-body 2[alpha]3n channels from the 10.59 and 18.15 MeV states in 11Be. Monte Carlo simulations using an R-matrix formalism lead to the conclusion that the AHe resonance states play a significant role in the break-up of these states. The results exclude an earlier assumption of a phase-space description of the break-up process of the 18.15 MeV state. Evidence for extra sequential decay paths is found for both states.

  • Study of β-delayed charged particle emission of 11Li: Evidence of new decay channels
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 111:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The break-up of the 18.2 MeV state in 11Be was studied in a 11Li β-decay experiment. We report here on the study of the dominating breakup channels involving na6He or 3n2α in the final state, with special emphasis dedicated in this contribution to the three-particle channel. The two emitted charged particles were detected in coincidence using a highly segmented experimental set-up. The observed experimental energy-vs-energy scatter plot indicates a sequential breakup where nuclei of mass 4, alpha particles, and mass 7, 7He, are involved. A Monte-Carlo simulation of the sequential channel, 11Be* → α + 7He → nα6He was performed and compared to the experimental data and to a simulation of the direct break-up of the 18.2 MeV state nα6He by phase space energy distribution. The energy-versus-energy plot are explained by the sequential simulation but not by the phase space simulation.

  • A cross-sectional analysis of physical activity and obesity indicators in European participants of the EPIC-PANACEA study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Obesity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5497 .- 0307-0565. ; 33:4, s. 497-506
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Cross-sectional data suggest a strong association between low levels of physical activity and obesity. The EPIC-PANACEA ( European Prospective Investigation into Cancer-Physical Activity, Nutrition, Alcohol, Cessation of Smoking, Eating out of home And obesity) project was designed to investigate the associations between physical activity and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference based on individual data collected across nine European countries. Methods: In the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition ( EPIC), 519 931 volunteers were recruited between 1992 and 2000, of whom 405 819 had data on main variables of interest. Height, body weight and waist circumference were measured using standardized procedures. Physical activity was assessed using a validated four-category index reflecting a self-reported usual activity during work and leisure time. The associations between physical activity and BMI and waist circumference were estimated using multilevel mixed effects linear regression models, adjusted for age, total energy intake, smoking status, alcohol consumption and educational level. Results: A total of 125 629 men and 280 190 women with a mean age of 52.9 (s.d. 9.7) and 51.5 (s.d. 10.0) years, respectively were included. The mean BMI was 26.6 kg/m(2) (s.d. 3.6) in men and 25.0 kg/m(2) (s.d. 4.5) in women. Fifty percent of men and 30% of women were categorized as being active or moderately active. A one-category difference in the physical activity index was inversely associated with a difference of 0.18 kg/m(2) in the mean BMI (95% confidence interval, CI, 0.11, 0.24) and 1.04-cm (95% CI 0.82, 1.26) difference in waist circumference in men. The equivalent figures for women were 0.31 kg/m(2) (95% CI 0.23, 0.38) and 0.90 cm ( 95% CI 0.71, 1.08), respectively. Conclusions: Physical activity is inversely associated with both BMI and waist circumference across nine European countries. Although we cannot interpret the association causally, our results were observed in a large and diverse cohort independently from many potential confounders.

  • The inhomogeneous structure of water at ambient conditions
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 106:36, s. 15214-15218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is used to demonstrate the presence of density fluctuations in ambient water on a physical length-scale of approximate to 1 nm; this is retained with decreasing temperature while the magnitude is enhanced. In contrast, the magnitude of fluctuations in a normal liquid, such as CCl4, exhibits no enhancement with decreasing temperature, as is also the case for water from molecular dynamics simulations under ambient conditions. Based on X-ray emission spectroscopy and X-ray Raman scattering data we propose that the density difference contrast in SAXS is due to fluctuations between tetrahedral-like and hydrogen-bond distorted structures related to, respectively, low and high density water. We combine our experimental observations to propose a model of water as a temperature-dependent, fluctuating equilibrium between the two types of local structures driven by incommensurate requirements for minimizing enthalpy (strong near-tetrahedral hydrogen-bonds) and maximizing entropy (non-directional H-bonds and disorder). The present results provide experimental evidence that the extreme differences anticipated in the hydrogen-bonding environment in the deeply supercooled regime surprisingly remain in bulk water even at conditions ranging from ambient up to close to the boiling point.

  • Genome-wide association study identifies eight loci associated with blood pressure
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 41:6, s. 666-676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elevated blood pressure is a common, heritable cause of cardiovascular disease worldwide. To date, identification of common genetic variants influencing blood pressure has proven challenging. We tested 2.5 million genotyped and imputed SNPs for association with systolic and diastolic blood pressure in 34,433 subjects of European ancestry from the Global BPgen consortium and followed up findings with direct genotyping (N <= 71,225 European ancestry, N <= 12,889 Indian Asian ancestry) and in silico comparison (CHARGE consortium, N 29,136). We identified association between systolic or diastolic blood pressure and common variants in eight regions near the CYP17A1 (P = 7 x 10(-24)), CYP1A2 (P = 1 x 10(-23)), FGF5 (P = 1 x 10(-21)), SH2B3 (P = 3 x 10(-18)), MTHFR (P = 2 x 10(-13)), c10orf107 (P = 1 x 10(-9)), ZNF652 (P = 5 x 10(-9)) and PLCD3 (P = 1 x 10(-8)) genes. All variants associated with continuous blood pressure were associated with dichotomous hypertension. These associations between common variants and blood pressure and hypertension offer mechanistic insights into the regulation of blood pressure and may point to novel targets for interventions to prevent cardiovascular disease.

  • Energy intake and sources of energy intake in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5640 .- 0954-3007. ; 63:4s, s. 3-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To describe energy intake and its macronutrient and food sources among 27 regions in 10 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Methods: Between 1995 and 2000, 36 034 subjects aged 35-74 years were administered a standardized 24-h dietary recall. Intakes of macronutrients (g/day) and energy (kcal/day) were estimated using standardized national nutrient databases. Mean intakes were weighted by season and day of the week and were adjusted for age, height and weight, after stratification by gender. Extreme low- and high-energy reporters were identified using Goldberg's cutoff points (ratio of energy intake and estimated basal metabolic rate <0.88 or >2.72), and their effects on macronutrient and energy intakes were studied. Results: Low-energy reporting was more prevalent in women than in men. The exclusion of extreme-energy reporters substantially lowered the EPIC-wide range in mean energy intake from 2196-2877 to 2309-2866 kcal among men. For women, these ranges were 1659-2070 and 1873-2108 kcal. There was no north-south gradient in energy intake or in the prevalence of low-energy reporting. In most centres, cereals and cereal products were the largest contributors to energy intake. The food groups meat, dairy products and fats and oils were also important energy sources. In many centres, the highest mean energy intakes were observed on Saturdays. Conclusions: These data highlight and quantify the variations and similarities in energy intake and sources of energy intake among 10 European countries. The prevalence of low-energy reporting indicates that the study of energy intake is hampered by the problem of underreporting. • The significance of nitrogen fixation to new production during early summer in the Baltic Sea
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 4:1, s. 63-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rates of dinitrogen (N-2) fixation and primary production were measured during two 9 day transect cruises in the Baltic proper in June-July of 1998 and 1999. Assuming that the early phase of the bloom of cyanobacteria lasted a month, total rates of N-2 fixation contributed 15 mmol N m(-2) (1998) and 33 mmol N m(-2) (1999) to new production (sensu Dugdale and Goering, 1967). This constitutes 12-26% more new N than other annual estimates (mid July-mid October) from the same region. The between-station variability observed in both total N-2 fixation and primary productivity greatly emphasizes the need for multiple stations and seasonal sampling strategies in biogeochemical studies of the Baltic Sea. The majority of new N from N-2 fixation was contributed by filamentous cyanobacteria. On average, cyanobacterial cells > 20 mu m were able to supply a major part of their N requirements for growth by N-2 fixation in both 1998 (73%) and 1999 (81%). The between-station variability was high however, and ranged from 28-150% of N needed to meet the rate of C incorporation by primary production. The molar C: N rate incorporation ratio (C:N-RATE) in filamentous cyanobacterial cells was variable (range 7-28) and the average almost twice as high as the Redfield ratio (6.6) in both years. Since the molar C: N mass ratio (C:N-MASS) in filamentous cyanobacterial cells was generally lower than C: NRATE at a number of stations, we suggest that the diazotrophs incorporated excess C on a short term basis (carbohydrate ballasting and buoyancy regulation), released nitrogen or utilized other regenerated sources of N nutrients. Measured rates of total N-2 fixation contributed only a minor fraction of 13% (range 4-24) in 1998 and 18% (range 2-45) in 1999 to the amount of N needed for the community primary production. An average of 9 and 15% of total N-2 fixation was found in cells < 5 mu m. Since cells < 5 mu m did not show any detectable rates of N-2 fixation, the N-15-enrichment could be attributed to regenerated incorporation of dissolved organic N (DON) and ammonium generated from larger diazotroph cyanobacteria. Therefore, N excretion from filamentous cyanobacteria may significantly contribute to the pool of regenerated nutrients used by the non-diazotroph community in summer. Higher average concentrations of regenerated N (ammonium) coincided with higher rates of N-2 fixation found during the 1999 transect and a higher level of N-15-enrichment in cells < 5 mu m. A variable but significant fraction of total N-2 fixation (1-10%) could be attributed to diazotrophy in cells between 5-20 mu m.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to measure the damage caused by exposure to x-rays to the Mn4Ca active site in single crystals of photosystem II as a function of dose and energy of x-rays, temperature, and time. These studies reveal that the conditions used for structure determination by x-ray crystallography cause serious damage specifically to the metal-site structure. The x-ray absorption spectra show that the structure changes from one that is characteristic of a high-valent Mn-4(III2,IV2), oxo-bridged Mn4Ca cluster to that of Mn(II) in aqueous solution. This damage to the metal site occurs at a dose that is more than one order of magnitude lower than the dose that results in loss of diffractivity and is commonly considered safe for protein crystallography. These results establish quantitative x-ray dose parameters that are applicable to redox-active metalloproteins. This case study shows that a careful evaluation of the structural intactness of the active site(s) by spectroscopic techniques can validate structures derived from crystallography and that it can be a valuable complementary method before structure-function correlations of metalloproteins can be made on the basis of high-resolution x-ray crystal structures.
