  • Health, Risk-Taking Behavior and Sexuality in Swedish Adolescents
  • 2007
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The overall aims of this research were to develop methods of identifying adolescents with unhealthy and/or risk-taking behavior with special reference to sexuality, and to evaluate support measures for young people in need of such interventions. A further aim was to assess strategies for preventing unhealthy and/or risk-taking behavior. Data were obtained by questionnaires (studies I, III, IV and V) and interviews (study II).The results showed that young men involved in unintended pregnancies would benefit from active participation in the decision making regarding continuation or termination of the pregnancy, and from support at Outpatient Clinics for Adolescents in Sweden, including information together with the partner (I).It was also concluded that consideration should be paid to questions and problems, e.g. feelings, apprehensions, moral issues and psychosocial factors, that require individual support from personnel with knowledge and resources to help young men in this difficult situation (II).Among the most important findings regarding young men who had been involved in an unplanned pregnancy were that in this group a high percentage had previously considered suicide and that anabolic steroids were frequently used, compared with young men without experience of pregnancy (III).The finding that unprotected intercourse occurred in a fairly high frequency among 13- to 18-year-olds, despite massive education and easy access to contraceptives, gives reason for further considerations regarding appropriate ways of providing information to young people (IV).Girls and boys in vocational programs in Swedish high schools exhibit more risk-taking behaviors than those in theoretical programs and these two groups differ in clustering and accumulation of these behaviors. This means that preventive interventional strategies need to be elaborated with regard to these differences, with the aim of improving health maintenance among adolescents (V).Child-and-youth centers with a developmental and research capacity need to be established with the broad purpose of drawing up health prevention programs for children and young people.

  • High-precision mass measurements for fundamental applications using highly-charged ions with SMILETRAP
  • 2007
  • In: Journal of Physics, Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 58, s. 109-112
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Penning trap mass spectrometer SMILETRAP takes advantage of highly-charged ions for high-accuracy mass measurements. In this paper recent mass measurements on Li and Ca ions are presented and their impact on fundamental applications discussed, especially the need for accurate mass values of hydrogen-like and lithium-like ions in the evaluation of the electron g-factor measurements in highly-charged ions is emphasized. Such experiments aim to test bound state quantum electrodynamics. Here the ionic mass is a key ingredient, which can be the limiting factor for the final precision.

  • Precision mass measurements of 40Ca17+ and 40Ca19+ ions in a Penning trap
  • 2006
  • In: European Physical Journal D. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6060 .- 1434-6079. ; 39:1, s. 1-4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High-precision mass measurements on lithium-like and hydrogen-like 40Ca-ions are reported. The obtained mass of the hydrogen-like and lithium-like ion is 39.952181819(29) u and 39.953272223(24) u, respectively. The corresponding mass of the 40Ca atom is 39.962590858(22) u. This new value has a precision ten times higher than the literature value.

  • Precise Atomic Masses for Fundamental Physics Determined at SMILETRAP
  • 2008
  • In: Advances in Quantum Chemistry. - Nederländerna : Elsevier. - 0065-3276 .- 2162-8815. ; 53, s. 67-81
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper we describe the features of the SMILETRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer and give examples of recently performed precision mass measurements. SMILETRAP is designed for precision mass measurements using the merits of highly-charged ions. We emphasize here the importance of accurate masses of hydrogen-like and lithium-like ions for the evaluation of g-factor measurements of electrons bound to even–even nuclei and test quantum electrodynamics (QED). For these experiments the ion masses of 40Ca17+ and 40Ca19+ were measured at SMILETRAP with 5×10−10 precision. Highly precise mass measurements can also be used for testing atomic structure calculations and determination of atomic and nuclear binding energies. Some Q-values are of fundamental interest, for example, the beta-decay of tritium and the double beta-decay with no neutrinos of several nuclei, in particular 76Ge. These decays are related to properties of the electron neutrino mass and whether this neutrino is a Majorana particle. The reason that Penning traps are so reliable for the determinations of accurate decay Q-values is due to the fact that systematic errors to a great deal cancel in the mass difference between the two atoms defining the Q-value. In this paper we report the most accurate Q-values of these two beta decays namely 18589.8(12) eV for the tritium decay, and 2038.997(46) keV for the neutrinoless double beta-decay of 76Ge.

  • Lead exposure from tourist earthenware : a pilot survey
  • 2008
  • In: International journal of hygiene and environmental health. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1438-4639 .- 1618-131X. ; 211:5-6, s. 587-590
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Lead from glazed earthenware used for food storage is a well-known health hazard sporadically causing lead intoxication and may be a source of disseminating lead exposure in specific population groups. To obtain a contemporary scope of the problem a pilot survey was conducted in a random sample of 2000 households with Swedish charter tourists to Greece in 2003. Response was obtained from 214 (10.7%). From these households blood samples were obtained from 33 potentially lead exposed subjects and 33 controls (participation rate among selected participants of each category was 66% and 33%, respectively). No statistically significant difference in mean blood lead was found between groups (arithmetic mean 0.13 and 0.10 μmol/l for exposed and controls, respectively; p>0.05), but increased lead levels for two exposed subjects (1.0 and 0.77 μmol/l) were associated with their Hellenic earthenware (tea mugs). This pilot survey, probably the first epidemiological study of the current problem, did not indicate that earthenware purchased in Greece by Swedish tourists and used for food storage is a widespread source of lead, but limitations with regard to statistical power preclude definite conclusions.

  • Prolonged antigen-exposure with carbohydrate particle based vaccination prevents allergic immune responses in sensitized mice
  • 2009
  • In: Allergy. European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : Wiley. - 0105-4538 .- 1398-9995. ; 64:6, s. 919-926
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Defined particles carrying tightly bound allergens at high density have been suggested as alternatives in allergy vaccination. Carbohydrate based particles (CBP), sized 2 microm, provide a platform for covalent coupling of allergens. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms of antigen presentation by CBP, as well as cellular and humoral responses after vaccination with the major cat allergen Fel d 1, covalently coupled to CBP. METHODS: Mice (n = 10/group) were subcutaneously vaccinated with CBP-rFel d 1, CBP or phosphate buffer saline (PBS) before sensitization with rFel d 1 and challenged with cat dander extract. Fluorescent and (75)Se-radiolabeled tracking of allergens and particles were performed with flow cytometry and whole-body autoradiography. Humoral, cellular and regulatory immune responses were analyzed by ELISA and flow cytometry. Cytokines were measured in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and splenocyte cultures. RESULTS: CBP-rFel d 1 prevented induction of airway inflammation and induced allergen-specific T-cell anergy. CBP-rFel d 1 also induced rapid IgM and IgG1-responses compared with soluble rFel d 1. Particles were phagocytosed by antigen-presenting cells and transported to draining lymph nodes and spleen. Moreover, antigen coupled to CBP remained longer at the injection site compared with alum. CONCLUSIONS: Covalent coupling of rFel d 1 to CBP induces rapid antibody production, prevents induction of allergic immune responses and systemic allergen spreading. Thus, CBP comprise several attractive adjuvant features for use in allergy vaccination. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Prolonged allergen exposure through covalent coupling to particles suitable for phagocytosis, provides an adjuvant for safer and efficient allergy vaccination.

  • Migrating birds and tickborne encephalitis virus
  • 2007
  • In: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - : Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 13:8, s. 1215-8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • During spring and autumn 2001, we screened 13,260 migrating birds at Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden, and found 3.4% were infested with ticks. Four birds, each a different passerine species, carried tickborne encephalitis virus (TBEV)-infected ticks (Ixodes ricinus). Migrating birds may play a role in the geographic dispersal of TBEV-infected ticks.
