  • Den nya arbetsmarknaden - Bemanningsbranschens etablering i Sverige
  • 2007

  • Organizational discourse and subjective: Subjectification during processes of recruitment
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Human Relations. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7267 .- 1741-282X. ; 59:3, s. 351-377
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article seeks to contribute to the debate on the relationship between organizational discourses and subjectivity, revolving around whether organizational discourses determine individual subjectivity and the extent to which there is room for human agency. It does so by providing empirical illustrations of how organizational discourses constitute subjectivity during processes of recruitment in a large American consultancy firm operating in Sweden. The analysis illustrates how interviewers, by various discursive moves, initiate, support, control and follow up candidates’ decision to join the company, as if it was an independent choice to join. Findings suggest that to the extent that subjectification takes place during the recruitment process it is dependent on the candidate’s use and acceptance of organizational discourses as expressions of their own motives for working at the company. These findings have implications for the understanding of the relationship between organizational discourses and individual subjectivity and how subjectification processes may be studied in other practices and organizations. It argues that subjectification is an effect of the interaction between human agency and organizational discourses rather than in the determination of one to the other. Any attempt to analyse the impact of organizational discourse on individual subjectivity must take into account the possibility that subjects actively take part in their own self-construction and that this construction is produced in social interaction.

  • Organizing disciplinary power in a knowledge organization
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 25:2, s. 178-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides a systematic attempt to analyze the effects of performance appraisals, here conceptualized as tools for executing disciplinary power, and how the agency of employees is shaped. The article demonstrates how agency is enrolled by a broad set of disciplinary technologies aimed at behavior as well as the self, orchestrated in way that effectively short-circuits resistance. Drawing upon data collected from a Swedish subsidiary of a large American consultancy firm, the article provides a detailed account for the use of disciplinary technologies in knowledge-intensive work and other types of high-commitment work settings. Furthermore, the article pays specific attention to how punishments, rewards and human agency interact in this context.

  • Regional Collaboration and Restructuring in Knowledge Intensive Industries
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: the European Academy of Management Conference in Paris, 16-19 May 2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper seeks to further the understanding of the problems and challenges of regional collaboration in the context of restructuring in knowledge intensive industries. When companies with a dominant position within a geographical area close down, the region may suffer important economic disadvantage. Most often such restructuring has been concerned with the closure of mature or declining industries and sectors such as steel mines, shipping, textile and car manufacturing. However, the growing and emerging industries such IT sectors are also becoming more vulnerable to restructuring. This poses important challenges for regional governments to create new structures of collaboration. One problem is that the institutional structures, such as the employment protection legislation, the public employment services, the unemployment insurance systems, are designed to care for the needs of the traditional industries and that institutional rules and regulations may impede collaborative efforts. The paper illustrates how local private, public and non-profit actors are able to create a common structure of collaboration by negotiating institutional rules and regulations to support redundant high-skilled workers to find new jobs in the region. It illustrates this with field data collected among the collaborating actors in a re-employment project called VinnVinn in Göteborg, Sweden. The implications of the paper concern the need for regional policy makers to balance the thin line between supporting companies going through restructuring while at the same time stimulate the creation of new businesses. On the other hand, there is a balance to strike between advantaged groups and disadvantaged groups in order to avoid social exclusion. In particular regional governments need to consider the long-term benefits of supporting knowledge intensive industries in the region with the short-term costs that it creates.

  • Translating socially responsible workforce reduction - a longitudinal study of workforce reduction in a Swedish company
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 23:4, s. 384-405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article seeks to add to our understanding of the significance and impact of processes of translation in the context of socially responsible workforce reduction. Abandoning the tendency among researchers and policy-makers to regard socially responsible workforce reduction as a stable feature or model that can be passed on and implemented in any organisation regardless of the local context, it will be claimed here that any attempt to understand what socially responsible workforce reduction means in practice must take account of the context in which it occurs and the processes whereby new ideas are imitated and translated by local actors. This claim will be supported by field data from a large Swedish company that has been undergoing extensive restructuring since the beginning of the 1990s. The implications of the article highlight the need for researchers to take account of the way workforce reduction practices are connected over time and to consider the space for translation available to local actors when it comes to defining the meaning of socially responsible workforce reduction in their own local context. The paper also contributes to our understanding of the interrelationship between the translation of such ideas and the processes of institutionalisation.

  • Institutional entrepreneurship: comparing Dutch and Swedish temporary work agencies
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: the EHBA conference in Geneva, 13-15 September 2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most studies of institutional entrepreneurship emphasize the influence of institutional entrepreneurs on processes of institutional change. Relatively little attention is paid to the interaction between the institutional entrepreneur and the institutional environment. Our aim is to fill this void by a comparative study of the institutional development of the Dutch and Swedish temporary work agency industries from the 1960s until the present, emphasizing the periods after their formal legalization in 1965 and 1991 respectively. The comparison shows the important influence of the different national contexts on the dynamics of institutionalization, the evolving industry identity and accountability. Our paper thus shows how the process of synchronizing of (international) industry experience with the (national) societal experience with the industry’s product is not a simple process of knowledge transfer and reflects the important interaction between institutional entrepreneurs and their environment.
