  • Current-driven insulator-to-metal transition without Mott breakdown in Ca2RuO4
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950. ; 108:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrical control of a material's conductivity is at the heart of modern electronics. Conventionally, this control is achieved by tuning the density of mobile charge carriers. A completely different approach is possible in Mott insulators such as Ca2RuO4, where an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) can be induced by a weak electric field or current. While the driving force of the IMT is poorly understood, it has been thought to be a breakdown of the Mott state. Using in operando angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that this is not the case: The current-induced conductivity is caused by the formation of in-gap states with only a minor reorganization of the Mott state. Electronic structure calculations show that these in-gap states form at the boundaries of structural domains that emerge during the IMT. At such boundaries, the overall gap is drastically reduced, even if the structural difference between the domains is small and the individual domains retain their Mott character. The inhomogeneity of the sample is thus key to understanding the IMT, as it leads to a nonequilibrium semimetallic state that forms at the interface of Mott domains.

  • Multi-planarizable quivers, orientifolds, and conformal dualities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study orientifold projections of families of four-dimensional N = 1 toric quiver gauge theories. We restrict to quivers that have the unusual property of being associated with multiple periodic planar diagrams which give rise, in general, to inequivalent models. A suitable orientifold projection relates a subfamily of the latter by conformal duality. That is, there exist exactly marginal deformations that connect the projected models. The deformations take the form of a sign flip in some of the superpotential interactions, similarly to the beta-deformation of N = 4 SYM. Our construction generalizes previous results on the orientifold projections of the PdP3b and PdP3c singularities.

  • Elucidating the mechanisms of atmospheric new particle formation in the highly polluted Po Valley, Italy
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 24:4, s. 2423-2441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New particle formation (NPF) is a major source of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei in the troposphere, playing an important role in both air quality and climate. Frequent NPF events have been observed in heavily polluted urban environments, contributing to the aerosol number concentration by a significant amount. The Po Valley region in northern Italy has been characterized as a hotspot for high aerosol loadings and frequent NPF events in southern Europe. However, the mechanisms of NPF and growth in this region are not completely understood. In this study, we conducted a continuous 2-month measurement campaign with state-of-the-art instruments to elucidate the NPF and growth mechanisms in northern Italy. Our results demonstrate that frequent NPF events (66% of all days during the measurement campaign) are primarily driven by abundant sulfuric acid (8.5×106cm-3) and basic molecules in this area. In contrast, oxygenated organic molecules from the atmospheric oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) appear to play a minor role in the initial cluster formation but contribute significantly to the consecutive growth process. Regarding alkaline molecules, amines are insufficient to stabilize all sulfuric acid clusters in the Po Valley. Ion cluster measurements and kinetic models suggest that ammonia (10ppb) must therefore also play a role in the nucleation process. Generally, the high formation rates of sub-2nm particles (87cm-3s-1) and nucleation-mode growth rates (5.1nmh-1) as well as the relatively low condensational sink (8.9×10-3s-1) will result in a high survival probability for newly formed particles, making NPF crucial for the springtime aerosol number budget. Our results also indicate that reducing key pollutants, such as SO2, amine and NH3, could help to substantially decrease the particle number concentrations in the Po Valley region.

  • Ultrafast electronic linewidth broadening in the C 1s core level of graphene
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 104:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that the presence of a transiently excited hot electron gas in graphene leads to a substantial broadening of the C 1s line probed by time-resolved x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The broadening is found to be caused by an exchange of energy and momentum between the photoemitted core electron and the hot electron gas, rather than by vibrational excitations. This interpretation is supported by a quantitative line-shape analysis that accounts for the presence of the excited electrons. Fitting the spectra to this model directly yields the electronic temperature of the system, in good agreement with electronic temperature values obtained from valence band data. Furthermore, we show how the momentum change of the outgoing core electrons leads to a detectable but very small change in the time-resolved photoelectron diffraction pattern and to a nearly complete elimination of the core level binding energy variation associated with the presence of a narrow σ band in the C 1s state.

  • 2020 WSES guidelines for the detection and management of bile duct injury during cholecystectomy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Emergency Surgery. - : BMC. - 1749-7922. ; 16:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bile duct injury (BDI) is a dangerous complication of cholecystectomy, with significant postoperative sequelae for the patient in terms of morbidity, mortality, and long-term quality of life. BDIs have an estimated incidence of 0.4-1.5%, but considering the number of cholecystectomies performed worldwide, mostly by laparoscopy, surgeons must be prepared to manage this surgical challenge. Most BDIs are recognized either during the procedure or in the immediate postoperative period. However, some BDIs may be discovered later during the postoperative period, and this may translate to delayed or inappropriate treatments. Providing a specific diagnosis and a precise description of the BDI will expedite the decision-making process and increase the chance of treatment success. Subsequently, the choice and timing of the appropriate reconstructive strategy have a critical role in long-term prognosis. Currently, a wide spectrum of multidisciplinary interventions with different degrees of invasiveness is indicated for BDI management. These World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) guidelines have been produced following an exhaustive review of the current literature and an international expert panel discussion with the aim of providing evidence-based recommendations to facilitate and standardize the detection and management of BDIs during cholecystectomy. In particular, the 2020 WSES guidelines cover the following key aspects: (1) strategies to minimize the risk of BDI during cholecystectomy; (2) BDI rates in general surgery units and review of surgical practice; (3) how to classify, stage, and report BDI once detected; (4) how to manage an intraoperatively detected BDI; (5) indications for antibiotic treatment; (6) indications for clinical, biochemical, and imaging investigations for suspected BDI; and (7) how to manage a postoperatively detected BDI.

  • In Situ Exfoliation Method of Large-Area 2D Materials
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley. - 2198-3844. ; 10:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 2D materials provide a rich platform to study novel physical phenomena arising from quantum confinement of charge carriers. Many of these phenomena are discovered by surface sensitive techniques, such as photoemission spectroscopy, that work in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). Success in experimental studies of 2D materials, however, inherently relies on producing adsorbate-free, large-area, high-quality samples. The method that yields 2D materials of highest quality is mechanical exfoliation from bulk-grown samples. However, as this technique is traditionally performed in a dedicated environment, the transfer of samples into vacuum requires surface cleaning that might diminish the quality of the samples. In this article, a simple method for in situ exfoliation directly in UHV is reported, which yields large-area, single-layered films. Multiple metallic and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are exfoliated in situ onto Au, Ag, and Ge. The exfoliated flakes are found to be of sub-millimeter size with excellent crystallinity and purity, as supported by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and low-energy electron diffraction. The approach is well-suited for air-sensitive 2D materials, enabling the study of a new suite of electronic properties. In addition, the exfoliation of surface alloys and the possibility of controlling the substrate-2D material twist angle is demonstrated.

  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This analysis comprises part of a larger project on the placement of rune-stones in the local area of Tiohärad. It considers two rune-stones, Sm 36 and Sm 37, in Bolmaryd. The older stone, Sm 36, is placed in the grounds of what would have been a large farmhouse or village and could only have been seen by its householders and visitors. The text is short and simply refers to a family relationship. The younger stone, Sm 37, meanwhile, like several of the rune-stones in Tiohärad, is placed in a communicatively strategic position on a larger road. It has a more extensive text which focuses on the social rank of the commemorated thane Vend. Both of the stones show how location and message can vary according to the intended recipients of the message.

  • Electronic properties of single-layer CoO2/Au(111)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Chemical Engineering. - : IOP Publishing. - 2211-3398. ; 8:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report direct measurements via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of the electronic dispersion of single-layer (SL) CoO2. The Fermi contour consists of a large hole pocket centered at the (Gamma) over bar point. To interpret the ARPES results, we use density functional theory (DFT) in combination with the multi-orbital Gutzwiller Approximation (DFT+GA), basing our calculations on crystalline structure parameters derived from x-ray photoelectron diffraction and low-energy electron diffraction. Our calculations are in good agreement with the measured dispersion. We conclude that the material is a moderately correlated metal. We also discuss substrate effects, and the influence of hydroxylation on the CoO2 SL electronic structure.

  • Data Augmentation via Neural-Style-Transfer for Driver Distraction Recognition
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The 8th International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3142 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2019. Naturalistic driving datasets (NDD) have been widely used to study distracting activities while driving, with the aim of improving road safety. However, the time required to annotate videos to identify distracting activities is a major issue for research using NDD. Although full automation of the annotation process is not possible, the use of image classifiers is a way forward to hasten the classification of distractions and therefore the analysis of NDD. This paper presents the results obtained by applying image classifier to the publicly available Distracted Driver Dataset (DDD) and a sample of frames extracted from the EuroFOT and DriveC2X dataset. The results show that using ResNet-50 pretrained on Imagenet and Stylized Imagenet produces the highest accuracy on both DDD and our EuroFOT and DriveC2X datasets. The accuracy of the image classifier will now be tested on a different sample of the Swedish EuroFOT dataset, before using the image classifier for detecting distracting activities in other NDD. The faster identification of distracting activities will considerably hasten the future analyses of NDD.

  • Spectroscopic view of ultrafast charge carrier dynamics in single- and bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena. - : Elsevier BV. - 0368-2048 .- 1873-2526. ; 250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quasiparticle spectra of atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and their response to an ultrafast optical excitation critically depend on interactions with the underlying substrate. Here, we present a comparative time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) study of the transient electronic structure and ultrafast carrier dynamics in the single- and bilayer TMDCs MoS2 and WS2 on three different substrates: Au(111), Ag(111) and graphene/SiC. The photoexcited quasiparticle bandgaps are observed to vary over the range of 1.9-2.5 eV between our systems. The transient conduction band signals decay on a sub-50 fs timescale on the metals, signifying an efficient removal of photoinduced carriers into the bulk metallic states. On graphene, we instead observe a fast timescale on the order of 170 fs, followed by a slow dynamics for the conduction band decay in MoS2. These timescales are explained by Auger recombination involving MoS2 and in-gap defect states. In bilayer TMDCs on metals we observe a complex redistribution of excited holes along the valence band that is substantially affected by interactions with the continuum of bulk metallic states.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 516:4, s. 5907-5913
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the first observation of a radio-quiet active galactic nucleus (AGN) in polarized X-rays: the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-05-23-16. This source was pointed at with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) starting on 2022 May 14 for a net observing time of 486 ks, simultaneously with XMM-Newton (58 ks) and NuSTAR (83 ks). A polarization degree Π smaller than 4.7 per cent (at the 99 per cent confidence level) is derived in the 2–8 keV energy range, where emission is dominated by the primary component ascribed to the hot corona. The broad-band spectrum, inferred from a simultaneous fit to the IXPE, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton data, is well reproduced by a power law with photon index Γ = 1.85 ± 0.01 and a high-energy cutoff EC = 120 ± 15 keV. A comparison with Monte Carlo simulations shows that a lamp-post and a conical geometry of the corona are consistent with the observed upper limit, a slab geometry is allowed only if the inclination angle of the system is less than 50°.

  • How do cyclists interact with motorized vehicles at unsignalized intersections? Modeling cyclists’ yielding behavior using naturalistic data
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Accident Analysis and Prevention. - 0001-4575. ; 190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When a cyclist's path intersects with that of a motorized vehicle at an unsignalized intersection, serious conflicts may happen. In recent years, the number of cyclist fatalities in this conflict scenario has held steady, while the number in many other traffic scenarios has been decreasing. There is, therefore, a need to further study this conflict scenario in order to make it safer. With the advent of automated vehicles, threat assessment algorithms able to predict cyclists’ (other road users’) behavior will be increasingly important to ensure safety. To date, the handful of studies that have modeled the vehicle-cyclist interaction at unsignalized intersections have used kinematics (speed and location) alone without using cyclists’ behavioral cues, such as pedaling or gesturing. As a result, we do not know whether non-verbal communication (e.g., from behavioral cues) could improve model predictions. In this paper, we propose a quantitative model based on naturalistic data, which uses additional non-verbal information to predict cyclists’ crossing intentions at unsignalized intersections. Interaction events were extracted from a trajectory dataset and enriched by adding cyclists’ behavioral cues obtained from sensors. Both kinematics and cyclists’ behavioral cues (e.g., pedaling and head movement), were found to be statistically significant for predicting the cyclist's yielding behavior. This research shows that adding information about the cyclists’ behavioral cues to the threat assessment algorithms of active safety systems and automated vehicles will improve safety. • Understanding the interaction between cyclists and motorized vehicles at unsignalized intersections: Results from a cycling simulator study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Safety Research. - 0022-4375. ; 90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • cyclists’ behavior to develop behavioral models that can predict the cyclist’s intent. Most conflicts between cyclists and vehicles happen at crossings where the road users share the path, especially at unsignalized intersections. However, few studies have investigated and modeled the interaction between cyclists and vehicles at unsignalized intersections. Method: A bike simulator experiment was conducted to scrutinize cyclists’ response process as they interacted with a passenger car at an unsignalized intersection. An existing unsignalized intersection in Gothenburg was simulated for test participants. Two independent variables were varied across trials: the difference in time to arrival at the intersection (DTA) and intersection visibility (IV). Subjective and quantitative data were analyzed to model the cyclists’ behavior. Results: When approaching the intersection, cyclists showed a clear sequence of actions (pedaling, braking, and head turning). The distance from the intersection at which cyclists started braking was significantly affected by the two independent variables. It was also found that DTA, looking duration, and pedaling behavior significantly affected cyclists’ decisions to yield. Finally, the questionnaire outputs show that participants missed eye contact or communication with the motorized vehicle. Conclusions: The kinematic interaction between cyclists and vehicles, along with the cyclist’s response process (visual and kinematic), can be utilized to predict cyclists’ yielding decision at intersections. From the infrastructural perspective, enhancing visibility at intersections has the potential to reduce the severity of interactions between cyclists and vehicles. The analysis of the questionnaire emphasizes the significance of visual communication between cyclists and drivers to support the cyclist’s decision-making process when yielding. Practical applications: The models can be used in threat assessment algorithms so that active safety systems and automated vehicles can react safely to the presence of cyclists in conflict scenarios. • 2023
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - 1521-3765 .- 0947-6539. ; 29:60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the synthesis of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) modified graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, having different sized alkyl linkers (GO-Cn-βCD) and their exploitation as sorbent of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from drinking water. βCD were functionalized with a pending amino group, and the resulting precursors grafted to GO nanosheets by epoxide ring opening reaction. Loading of βCD units in the range 12 %–36 % was estimated by combined XPS and elemental analysis. Adsorption tests on perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), a particularly persistent PFAS selected as case study, revealed a strong influence of the alkyl linker length on the adsorption efficiency, with the hexyl linker derivative GO-C6-βCD outperforming both pristine GO and granular activated carbon (GAC), the standard sorbent benchmark. Molecular dynamic simulations ascribed this evidence to the favorable orientation of the βCD unit on the surface of GO which enables a strong contaminant molecules retention.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While there are a number of scholarly databases which contain information about runic inscriptions, none of them can be considered to represent a corpus edition in the true sense of the word. Such databases are, however, important sources of a limited amount of core information concerning the corpus or corpora they include, and as a rule they build on and at times even supplement or correct information in the printed corpus editions. There exist three scholarly, supranational databases important to runology and publicly available at the present time. These are: (a) the Scandinavian Runic Text Database (Samnordisk runtextdatabas), (b) the Kiel Runendatei (database of the Kiel Rune Project), and (c) the RuneS database (of the research project Runic Writing in the Germanic Languages). The origin, development and future prospects of each are reviewed here, along with their strengths and advantages as well as their weaknesses and limitations.
