  • Common breast cancer susceptibility alleles and the risk of breast cancer for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers : Implications for risk prediction
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Cancer Research. - : American Association for Cancer Research. - 0008-5472 .- 1538-7445. ; 70:23, s. 9742-9754
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The known breast cancer susceptibility polymorphisms in FGFR2, TNRC9/TOX3, MAP3K1, LSP1, and 2q35 confer increased risks of breast cancer for BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers. We evaluated the associations of 3 additional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs4973768 in SLC4A7/NEK10, rs6504950 in STXBP4/COX11, and rs10941679 at 5p12, and reanalyzed the previous associations using additional carriers in a sample of 12,525 BRCA1 and 7,409 BRCA2 carriers. Additionally, we investigated potential interactions between SNPs and assessed the implications for risk prediction. The minor alleles of rs4973768 and rs10941679 were associated with increased breast cancer risk for BRCA2 carriers (per-allele HR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.03-1.18, P = 0.006 and HR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.01-1.19, P = 0.03, respectively). Neither SNP was associated with breast cancer risk for BRCA1 carriers, and rs6504950 was not associated with breast cancer for either BRCA1 or BRCA2 carriers. Of the 9 polymorphisms investigated, 7 were associated with breast cancer for BRCA2 carriers (FGFR2, TOX3, MAP3K1, LSP1, 2q35, SLC4A7, 5p12, P = 7 × 10-11 - 0.03), but only TOX3 and 2q35 were associated with the risk for BRCA1 carriers (P = 0.0049, 0.03, respectively). All risk-associated polymorphisms appear to interact multiplicatively on breast cancer risk for mutation carriers. Based on the joint genotype distribution of the 7 risk-associated SNPs in BRCA2 mutation carriers, the 5% of BRCA2 carriers at highest risk (i.e., between 95th and 100th percentiles) were predicted to have a probability between 80% and 96% of developing breast cancer by age 80, compared with 42% to 50% for the 5% of carriers at lowest risk. Our findings indicated that these risk differences might be sufficient to influence the clinical management of mutation carriers.

  • Germline rearrangements in families with strong family history of glioma and malignant melanoma, colon, and breast cancer
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Neuro-Oncology. - : Oxford University Press. - 1522-8517 .- 1523-5866. ; 16:10, s. 1333-1340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Although familial susceptibility to glioma is known, the genetic basis for this susceptibility remains unidentified in the majority of glioma-specific families. An alternative approach to identifying such genes is to examine cancer pedigrees, which include glioma as one of several cancer phenotypes, to determine whether common chromosomal modifications might account for the familial aggregation of glioma and other cancers. Methods: Germline rearrangements in 146 glioma families (from the Gliogene Consortium; http://www.gliogene.org/) were examined using multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. These families all had at least 2 verified glioma cases and a third reported or verified glioma case in the same family or 2 glioma cases in the family with at least one family member affected with melanoma, colon, or breast cancer. The genomic areas covering TP53, CDKN2A, MLH1, and MSH2 were selected because these genes have been previously reported to be associated with cancer pedigrees known to include glioma. Results: We detected a single structural rearrangement, a deletion of exons 1-6 in MSH2, in the proband of one family with 3 cases with glioma and one relative with colon cancer. Conclusions: Large deletions and duplications are rare events in familial glioma cases, even in families with a strong family history of cancers that may be involved in known cancer syndromes.

  • Association Between BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutations and Survival in Women With Invasive Epithelial Ovarian Cancer
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association. - : American Medical Association (AMA). - 1538-3598. ; 307:4, s. 382-390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context Approximately 10% of women with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) carry deleterious germline mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2. A recent article suggested that BRCA2-related EOC was associated with an improved prognosis, but the effect of BRCA1 remains unclear. Objective To characterize the survival of BRCA carriers with EOC compared with noncarriers and to determine whether BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers show similar survival patterns. Design, Setting, and Participants A pooled analysis of 26 observational studies on the survival of women with ovarian cancer, which included data from 1213 EOC cases with pathogenic germline mutations in BRCA1 (n=909) or BRCA2 (n=304) and from 2666 noncarriers recruited and followed up at variable times between 1987 and 2010 (the median year of diagnosis was 1998). Main Outcome Measure Five-year overall mortality. Results The 5-year overall survival was 36% (95% CI, 34%-38%) for noncarriers, 44% (95% CI, 40%-48%) for BRCA1 carriers, and 52% (95% CI, 46%-58%) for BRCA2 carriers. After adjusting for study and year of diagnosis, BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers showed a more favorable survival than noncarriers (for BRCA1: hazard ratio [HR], 0.78; 95% CI, 0.68-0.89; P<.001; and for BRCA2: HR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.50-0.76; P<.001). These survival differences remained after additional adjustment for stage, grade, histology, and age at diagnosis (for BRCA1: HR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.64-0.84; P<.001; and for BRCA2: HR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.39-0.61; P<.001). The BRCA1 HR estimate was significantly different from the HR estimated in the adjusted model (P for heterogeneity=.003). Conclusion Among patients with invasive EOC, having a germline mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 was associated with improved 5-year overall survival. BRCA2 carriers had the best prognosis. • PHAISTOS: A framework for Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation and inference of protein structure.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 1096-987X .- 0192-8651. ; 34:19, s. 1697-1705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new software framework for Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling for simulation, prediction, and inference of protein structure. The software package contains implementations of recent advances in Monte Carlo methodology, such as efficient local updates and sampling from probabilistic models of local protein structure. These models form a probabilistic alternative to the widely used fragment and rotamer libraries. Combined with an easily extendible software architecture, this makes PHAISTOS well suited for Bayesian inference of protein structure from sequence and/or experimental data. Currently, two force-fields are available within the framework: PROFASI and OPLS-AA/L, the latter including the generalized Born surface area solvent model. A flexible command-line and configuration-file interface allows users quickly to set up simulations with the desired configuration. PHAISTOS is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Source code and documentation are freely available from http://phaistos.sourceforge.net. The software is implemented in C++ and has been tested on Linux and OSX platforms. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

  • Adsorption of methylamine on Ni3Al(111) and NiAl(110)-a high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-648X .- 0953-8984. ; 22:39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methylamine adsorption on the ordered Ni3Al(111) and NiAl(110) surfaces has been investigated by high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Methylamine adsorbs molecularly at both surfaces at low temperature (90 K). The experiments show that methylamine interacts with the surface aluminium atoms on both surfaces, resulting in a positive binding energy shift relative to the Al 2p bulk contributions. A shift towards lower binding energy is also observed on NiAl(110) attributed to first and second layer surface Al atoms not bonded to methylamine. According to total energy calculations methylamine binds through its N atom to Al on-top sites on NiAl(110) while the Ni on-top site is found to be slightly preferred over the Al on-top site on Ni3Al(111). Calculated adsorbate induced shifts are, however, in good agreement with the experimental values only when methylamine is situated in the Al on-top site on both surfaces. In both cases, a lone pair bonding mechanism is found.

  • H-2 reduction of surface oxides on Pd-based membrane model systems - The case of Pd(100) and Pd75Ag25(100)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-5584 .- 0169-4332. ; 313, s. 794-803
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reduction of the (root 5 x root 5)R27 degrees surface oxide on Pd(1 0 0) and Pd75Ag25(1 0 0) surfaces by H-2 has been studied using high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy in situ at H-2 pressures 5 x 10(-9) mbar and 5 x 10(-8) mbar and selected temperatures in the range 30 degrees C to 170 degrees C. The reduction is slower on Pd75Ag25(1 0 0) compared to Pd(1 0 0) for all temperatures and pressures investigated. For Pd(1 0 0), the surface oxide reduction rate is rather independent of temperature, while for Pd75Ag25(1 0 0) a nonmonotonic variation is observed. As indicated by kinetic analysis, the complex reduction behavior is not well described by Avrami kinetics. Oxygen spillover effects contribute to this picture for Pd(1 0 0), while surface compositional effects appear to dominate the performance for Pd75Ag25(1 0 0). These findings may have implications for understanding the oxidation, reduction and hydrogen transport properties of Pd-Ag membranes. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Reduction behavior of oxidized Pd(100) and Pd75Ag25(100) surfaces using CO
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028. ; 621, s. 31-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reduction of the (A root 5x root 5)R27 degrees surface oxide on Pd(100) and Pd75Ag25(100) surfaces by CO has been investigated by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with kinetic analysis using the Avrami-Erofeev theory. For both surfaces we observed faster reduction with increasing temperature. Kinetic analysis indicates that the reduction process is phase boundary controlled for Pd(100) in the temperature range investigated, from 30 degrees C to 120 degrees C On Pd75Ag25(100) the surface oxide reduction is significantly slower compared to Pd(100). Also in this case, a phase boundary controlled reduction of the surface oxide is observed at temperatures of 120 C and above, while at T <= 70 degrees C the reduction is found to be diffusion limited. Density functional theory calculations show that the presence of silver in the outermost surface layer significantly increases the CO diffusion barriers on the reduced areas, supporting a diffusion limited reduction process for Pd75Ag25(100) at lower temperatures. • Cost-Effectiveness Models for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Cross-Model Comparison of Hypothetical Treatment Scenarios
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Value in Health. - : Elsevier BV. - 1098-3015. ; 17:5, s. 525-536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives To compare different chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cost-effectiveness models with respect to structure and input parameters and to cross-validate the models by running the same hypothetical treatment scenarios. Methods COPD modeling groups simulated four hypothetical interventions with their model and compared the results with a reference scenario of no intervention. The four interventions modeled assumed 1) 20% reduction in decline in lung function, 2) 25% reduction in exacerbation frequency, 3) 10% reduction in all-cause mortality, and 4) all these effects combined. The interventions were simulated for a 5-year and lifetime horizon with standardization, if possible, for sex, age, COPD severity, smoking status, exacerbation frequencies, mortality due to other causes, utilities, costs, and discount rates. Furthermore, uncertainty around the outcomes of intervention four was compared. Results Seven out of nine contacted COPD modeling groups agreed to participate. The 5-year incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) for the most comprehensive intervention, intervention four, was €17,000/quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) for two models, €25,000 to €28,000/QALY for three models, and €47,000/QALY for the remaining two models. Differences in the ICERs could mainly be explained by differences in input values for disease progression, exacerbation-related mortality, and all-cause mortality, with high input values resulting in low ICERs and vice versa. Lifetime results were mainly affected by the input values for mortality. The probability of intervention four to be cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay value of €50,000/QALY was 90% to 100% for five models and about 70% and 50% for the other two models, respectively. Conclusions Mortality was the most important factor determining the differences in cost-effectiveness outcomes between models.

  • Serial transverse enteroplasty to facilitate enteral autonomy in selected children with short bowel syndrome
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1365-2168 .- 0007-1323. ; 101:10, s. 1329-1333
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Serial transverse enteroplasty (STEP) was first described in 2003 as a method for lengthening and tapering of the bowel in short bowel syndrome. The aim of this multicentre study was to review the outcome of a Swedish cohort of children who underwent STEP. Methods: All children who had a STEP procedure at one of the four centres of paediatric surgery in Sweden between September 2005 and January 2013 were included in this observational cohort study. Demographic details, and data from the time of STEP and at follow-up were collected from the case records and analysed. Results: Twelve patients had a total of 16 STEP procedures; four children underwent a second STEP. The first STEP was performed at a median age of 5 8 (range 0.9-19.0) months. There was no death at a median follow-up of 37.2 (range 3.0-87.5) months and no child had small bowel transplantation. Seven of the 12 children were weaned from parenteral nutrition at a median of 19.5 (range 2.3-42.9) months after STEP. Conclusion: STEP is a useful procedure for selected patients with short bowel syndrome and seems to facilitate weaning from parenteral nutrition. At mid-term follow-up a majority of the children had achieved enteral autonomy. The study is limited by the small sample size and lack of a control group.

  • Common alleles at 6q25.1 and 1p11.2 are associated with breast cancer risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 20:16, s. 3304-3321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at 6q25.1, near the ESR1 gene, have been implicated in the susceptibility to breast cancer for Asian (rs2046210) and European women (rs9397435). A genome-wide association study in Europeans identified two further breast cancer susceptibility variants: rs11249433 at 1p11.2 and rs999737 in RAD51L1 at 14q24.1. Although previously identified breast cancer susceptibility variants have been shown to be associated with breast cancer risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, the involvement of these SNPs to breast cancer susceptibility in mutation carriers is currently unknown. To address this, we genotyped these SNPs in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers from 42 studies from the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2. In the analysis of 14 123 BRCA1 and 8053 BRCA2 mutation carriers of European ancestry, the 6q25.1 SNPs (r(2) = 0.14) were independently associated with the risk of breast cancer for BRCA1 mutation carriers [ hazard ratio (HR) = 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.11-1.23, P-trend = 4.5 x 10(-9) for rs2046210; HR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.18-1.40, P-trend = 1.3 x 10(-8) for rs9397435], but only rs9397435 was associated with the risk for BRCA2 carriers (HR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.01-1.28, P-trend = 0.031). SNP rs11249433 (1p11.2) was associated with the risk of breast cancer for BRCA2 mutation carriers (HR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.02-1.17, P-trend = 0.015), but was not associated with breast cancer risk for BRCA1 mutation carriers (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.92-1.02, P-trend = 0.20). SNP rs999737 (RAD51L1) was not associated with breast cancer risk for either BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers (P-trend = 0.27 and 0.30, respectively). The identification of SNPs at 6q25.1 associated with breast cancer risk for BRCA1 mutation carriers will lead to a better understanding of the biology of tumour development in these women.

  • Contralateral breast cancer after radiotherapy among BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers: A WECARE Study Report
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-0852 .- 0959-8049. ; 49:14, s. 2979-2985
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Women with germline BRCA1 or BRCA2 (BRCA1/BRCA2) mutations are at very high risk of developing breast cancer, including asynchronous contralateral breast cancer (CBC). BRCA1/BRCA2 genes help maintain genome stability and assist in DNA repair. We examined whether the risk of CBC associated with radiation treatment was higher among women with germline BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations than among non-carriers. Methods: A population-based, nested case-control study was conducted within a cohort of 52,536 survivors of unilateral breast cancer (UBC). Cases were 603 women with CBC and controls were 1199 women with UBC individually matched on age at diagnosis, race, year of first diagnosis and cancer registry. All women were tested for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Radiation absorbed dose from the initial radiotherapy (RT) to the CBC location within the contralateral breast was reconstructed from measurements in a tissue-equivalent phantom and details available in the therapy records. Findings: Among women treated with radiation, the mean radiation dose was 1.1 Gy (range = 0.02-6.2 Gy). Risk of developing CBC was elevated among women who carried a deleterious BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation (rate ratio, RR = 4.5, confidence interval, CI = 3.0-6.8), and also among those treated with RT (RR = 1.2, CI = 1.0-1.6). However, among mutation carriers, an incremental increase in risk associated with radiation dose was not statistically significant. Interpretation: Multiplicative interaction of RT with mutation status would be reflected by a larger association of RT with CBC among carriers than among non-carriers, but this was not apparent. Accordingly, there was no clear indication that carriers of deleterious BRCA/BRCA2 mutations were more susceptible to the carcinogenic effects of radiation than non-carriers. These findings are reassuring and have important clinical implications for treatment decisions and the clinical management of patients harbouring deleterious BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. • Assistive technology use and human rights enjoyment: a cross-sectional study in Bangladesh
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: BMC International Health and Human Rights. - 1472-698X. ; 12:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: About half a billion people with disabilities in developing countries have limited access to assistive technology. The Convention on the Rights of persons with Disabilities requires governments to take measures to ensure provision of such technologies. To guide implementation of these measures there is a need for understanding health outcomes from a human rights perspective. The objective of this study was therefore to explore the relation between assistive technology use and enjoyment of human rights in a low-income country. Methods: Data was collected in eight districts of Bangladesh through interviews of people with hearing impairments using and not using hearings aids, and people with ambulatory impairments using and not using manual wheelchairs (N = 583). Using logistic regression, self-reported outcomes on standard of living, health, education, work, receiving information and movement were analyzed. Results: The adjusted likelihood of reporting greater enjoyment of human rights was significantly higher among people using hearing aids compared to non-users for all outcomes except working status. Compared to non-users, users of wheelchairs reported a significantly higher adjusted likelihood of good ambulatory performance and a significantly lower adjusted likelihood of reporting a positive working status. Further analyses indicated that physical accessibility to working places and duration of wheelchair use had a statistically significant impact on the likelihood of reporting positive work outcomes. Conclusions: The findings support the notion that assistive technology use increases the likelihood of human rights enjoyment, particularly hearing aid use. Physical accessibility should always be addressed in wheelchair provision.

  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0963-8288 .- 1464-5165. ; 32, s. 1790-1797
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. To develop a model of the dynamics of functioning, disability and contextual factors which harmonises with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Method. Model parts based on ICF were identified and a model drawing from engineering concepts was developed. The conceptual and practical applicability of the model was discussed. Results. The so called Friction Model was created, which incorporates the ICF entities capacity, performance, environmental factors, health condition, body functions and structures, and personal factors. Friction describes the interaction between a person and his or her environment. The coefficient of friction is defined as the ratio between capacity and performance. Conclusion. Carrying conceptual strengths and limitations, the Friction Model appears to offer opportunities for practical applications, including ICF-based alternatives to health-economic analyses. Harmonising with the ICF model and terminology, the model uses friction to describe the interaction between a person and the environment. The coefficient of friction can be used as a simple measure of how facilitating an environment is. The applicability is not limited to functioning of people with impairments.

  • User involvement in service delivery predicts outcomes of assistive technology use: A cross-sectional study in Bangladesh
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: BMC Health Services Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6963. ; 12:330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Knowledge about the relation between user involvement in the provision of assistive technology and outcomes of assistive technology use is a prerequisite for the development of efficient service delivery strategies. However, current knowledge is limited, particularly from low-income countries where affordability is an issue. The objective was therefore to explore the relation between outcomes of assistive technology use and user involvement in the service delivery process in Bangladesh. Methods: Using structured interviews, data from 136 users of hearing aids and 149 users of manual wheelchairs were collected. Outcomes were measured using the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA), which was adapted for wheelchair users. Predictors of user involvement included preference, measurement and training. Results: Users reported outcomes comparable to those found in other high- and low-income countries. User involvement increased the likelihood for reporting better outcomes except for measurement among hearing aid users. Conclusions: The findings support the provision of assistive technology as a strategy to improve the participation of people with disabilities in society. They also support current policies and guidelines for user-involvement in the service delivery process. Simplified strategies for provision of hearing aids may be explored.

  • Interactions Among Female Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) Affect Growth and Reproduction
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ethology. - : Wiley. - 0179-1613 .- 1439-0310. ; 118:8, s. 752-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Competition among females over resources may have consequences for their resource budgets and thereby the resource allocation between growth and reproduction. In addition, the consequences of femalefemale interactions may differ for dominant and subordinate individuals, with the dominant ones being at an advantage. In this study, we investigated the consequences of femalefemale competition in guppies by manipulating the competitive environment of females. We found that large guppy females dominated smaller females and that interactions between females likely are costly because females exposed to competition grew less. These females compensated by growing at a higher rate when no longer subjected to competition. The higher growth rate might in turn be the cause of the reduced reproductive effort in the more competitive treatments. Furthermore, interactions were more costly for females when they were in the subordinate role than in the dominant role, because the reduction in growth and reproductive effort was highest in females exposed to larger competitors. Whether there was a differential allocation of resources into growth and reproduction depending on dominance status needs further investigation. However, in general, smaller females had a higher growth rate than larger females, independent of competitive level. We also found a negative relationship between reproduction and growth in all treatments, indicating a cost of reproduction.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) on Bragg reflections is a promising technique for the study of three-dimensional (3D) composition and strain fields in nanostructures, which can be recovered directly from the coherent diffraction data recorded on single objects. In this paper, we report results obtained for single homogeneous and heterogeneous nanowires with a diameter smaller than 100 nm, for which we used CDI to retrieve information about deformation and faults existing in these wires. We also discuss the influence of stacking faults, which can create artefacts during the reconstruction of the nanowire shape and deformation.

  • Ingår i: Marine Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-3162 .- 1432-1793. ; 158:3, s. 677-688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vertical distribution of copepods, fecal pellets and the fecal pellet production of copepods were measured at seven stations across the Southern Indian Ocean from productive areas off South Africa to oligotrophic waters off Northern Australia during October/November 2006. We quantified export of copepod fecal pellet from surface waters and how much was retained. Furthermore, the potential impact of Oncaea spp. and harpacticoid copepods on fecal pellets degradation was evaluated and found to be regional substantial. The highest copepod abundance and fecal pellet production was found in the western nutrient-rich stations close to South Africa and the lowest at the central oligotrophic stations. The in situ copepod fecal pellet production varied between 1 and 1,000 mu g C m(-3) day(-1). At all stations, the retention of fecal pellets in the upper 400 m of the water column was more than 99% and the vertical export of fecal pellets was low (< 0.02 mg m(-2) day(-1)).

  • Quality of life in Swedish patients with post-polio syndrome with a focus on age and sex
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Rehabilitation Research. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0342-5282. ; 37:2, s. 173-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To investigate the health-related quality of life (QOL) in Swedish patients with post-polio syndrome (PPS), with a focus on sex and age. A total of 364 patients were recruited from five Swedish post-polio clinics. Analysis was carried out using SF-36 and data were compared with those of a normal population. QOL was significantly lower in PPS patients for all eight subdomains and the two main scores (physical compound score and mental compound score) when compared with the controls. Male patients had a significantly higher QOL than female patients for all subdomains and also for mental compound score and physical compound score, a phenomenon also observed in the normal population. There was a decrease in QOL in the physical domains and an increase in vitality with age. PPS decreases health-related QOL in both sexes, more in female patients. QOL for physical domains decreases whereas vitality increases with age in both sexes. (C) 2014 Wolters Kluwer Health vertical bar Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

  • Ingår i: Pediatric Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0031-3998 .- 1530-0447. ; 73:1, s. 68-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:In preterm infants, low levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) are associated with impaired brain growth and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Treatment with IGF-I/IGFBP-3 may be beneficial for brain development and may decrease the prevalence of ROP.Methods:In a phase II pharmacokinetics and safety study, five infants (three girls) with a median (range) gestational age (GA) of 26 wk + 6 d (26 wk + 0 d to 27 wk + 2 d) and birth weight of 990 (900-1,212) g received continuous intravenous infusion of recombinant human (rh)IGF-I/rhIGFBP-3. Treatment was initiated during the first postnatal day and continued for a median (range) duration of 168 (47-168) h in dosages between 21 and 111 µg/kg/24 h.Results:Treatment with rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 was associated with higher serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations (P < 0.001) than model-predicted endogenous levels. Of 74 IGF-I samples measured during study drug infusion, 37 (50%) were within the target range, 4 (5%) were above, and 33 (45%) were below. The predicted dose of rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 required to establish circulating levels of IGF-I within the intrauterine range in a 1,000 g infant was 75-100 µg/kg/24 h. No hypoglycemia or other adverse effects were recorded. Conclusion:In this study, continuous intravenous infusion of rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 was effective in increasing serum concentrations of IGF-I and IGFBP-3, and was found to be safe.

  • Validation of a new biomechanical model to measure muscle tone in spastic muscles
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Neurorehabilitation and neural repair. - : SAGE Publications. - 1552-6844 .- 1545-9683. ; 25:7, s. 617-625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. There is no easy and reliable method to measure spasticity, although it is a common and important symptom after a brain injury. Objective. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a new method to measure spasticity that can be easily used in clinical practice. Methods. A biomechanical model was created to estimate the components of the force resisting passive hand extension, namely ( a) inertia (IC), ( b) elasticity (EC), ( c) viscosity (VC), and ( d) neural components (NC). The model was validated in chronic stroke patients with varying degree of hand spasticity. Electromyography (EMG) was recorded to measure the muscle activity induced by the passive stretch. Results. The model was validated in 3 ways: ( a) NC was reduced after an ischemic nerve block, ( b) NC correlated with the integrated EMG across subjects and in the same subject during the ischemic nerve block, and ( c) NC was velocity dependent. In addition, the total resisting force and NC correlated with the modified Ashworth score. According to the model, the neural and nonneural components varied between patients. In most of the patients, but not in all, the NC dominated. Conclusions. The results suggest that the model allows valid measurement of spasticity in the upper extremity of chronic stroke patients and that it can be used to separate the neural component induced by the stretch reflex from resistance caused by altered muscle properties.

  • Surface composition of clean and oxidized Pd75Ag25(100) from photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028. ; 606:23-24, s. 1777-1782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have been used to study the composition of clean and oxidized Pd75Ag25( 100). The results for the clean surface confirm earlier reports of surface segregation by Wouda et al. (1998), where the top most layers are rich in Ag. The Pd 3d core level component from the surface region is observed at higher binding energies than the contribution from the bulk which is found to be a signature of Pd embedded in Ag. Low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements reveal that oxidation of the Pd75Ag25(100) surface results in a (root 5 x root 5)R27 degrees-O structure similar to the one reported for Pd(100). The calculations suggest that the stable structure is a PdO(101) monolayer supported on a (100) surface rich in Ag at the interface to the stoichiometric alloy. The calculated core level shifts for the oxidized surface are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

  • Atmospheric chemistry in stereo : A new look at secondary organic aerosols from isoprene
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 38, s. L11807-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isoprene, a compound emitted by vegetation, could be a major contributor to secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the atmosphere. The main evidence for this contribution were the 2-methylbutane-1,2,3,4-tetraols, or 2-methyltetrols (2-methylerythritol and 2-methylthreitol) present in ambient aerosols. In this work, the four stereoisomers of these tetraols were analyzed in aerosols from Aspvreten, Sweden. 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol was found in excess over its enantiomer in the Spring/Summer, by up to 29% in July. This clearly indicated some biological origins for this enantiomer, consistent with its well-documented production by plants and other living organisms. In addition, a minimum of 20 to 60% of the mass of racemic tetraols appeared from biological origin. Thus, the SOA mass produced by isoprene in the atmosphere is less than what indicated by the 2-methyltetrols in aerosols. Our results also demonstrate that stereochemical speciation can distinguish primary and secondary organic material in atmospheric aerosols.

  • Chemical vapor deposition of ordered TiOx nanostructures on Au(111)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 617, s. 211-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The deposition of TiOx (x <= 2) structures on Au(111) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) has been investigated with high-resolution core level photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Using titanium tetra-isopropoxide as single source precursor it is possible to form different TiOx phases on the surface after deposition: at low coverages, we observe large two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb-lattice Ti2O3 islands with a (2 x 2) registry with the substrate. Higher coverages are dominated by the formation of three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 structures. The TiO2 structures are atomically well ordered provided that the deposition temperature is high enough (500 degrees C). The ordered structure exhibits a LEED pattern characteristic for a rectangular surface unit cell. By performing the deposition at different temperatures it is possible to tune the balance between the 2D and 3D phases: Growth at 500 degrees C significantly favors the formation of 3D TiO2 islands as compared to growth at 200 degrees C and 300 degrees C. • Controlled modification of nanoporous gold : Chemical vapor deposition of TiO2 in ultrahigh vacuum
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 282, s. 439-443
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • TiO2 has been deposited in the first 400 nm of a nanoporous gold (NPG) structure using metal organic chemical vapor deposition with titanium-tetraisopropoxide as single source precursor in ultra high vacuum. The NPG has been pretreated by ozone to clean and stabilize the structure for deposition. The deposited oxide stabilizes the porous structure, otherwise prone to coarsening at elevated temperatures, up to 300 degrees C. The study combines the controlled sample preparation with a functional test of the prepared catalyst under real conditions in a continuous gas flow reactor. The catalytic activity of the loaded NPG at 60 degrees C for CO oxidation is found to be superior to unloaded as-prepared NPG.
