  • Endogenous Communication and Tacit Coordination in Market Entry Games - An explorative experimental study
  • 2006
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores experimentally the effects of costly communication possibilities in market entry games. It is shown that these effects depend on whether entry costs are symmetric or asymmetric. In the former, but not the latter case, communication possibilities increase coordination success substantially and are likely to generate inferior outcomes for consumers. Furthermore, cost asymmetries provide a tacit coordination cue that is robust to changes in the game and is used by experienced players as a substitute to communication. It is also shown that although communication opens up for aggressive market domination strategies, such strategies are not used often successful.

  • Synthesis and optical characterization of optical power limiting platinum(II) acetylides
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Interactions between light and a molecule can result in reversible or irreversible changes in properties of both the light and the molecule. Of the many known interactions, nonlinear absorption is a process in which an intense light signal, for instance from a laser, can be moderated. This can be manifested either in a marked lowering of the light’s intensity or in reductions in fluctuations of its intensity. Such an effect is often termed ‘optical power limiting’ (OPL). High power lasers can be very dangerous since their high intensity can damage or destroy eyes and optical sensors. However, there are currently no adequate protective measures against lasers that cover the entire visible region and there is an increasing demand for new or improved OPL materials. Some of the most promising optical power limiting materials are substances that combine nonlinear optical properties with high transparency in normal light, but after activation by a laser beam, their light transmittance falls extremely rapidly via so-called self-activating mechanisms. The platinum(II) acetylides comprise one class of compounds with such properties. In this study, various OPL Pt(II) acetylides were synthesized and their nonlinear optical properties were characterized. The emphasis of the work was on preparation of the compounds, but in order to design organoplatinum chromophores for OPL, attempts were also made to obtain insight into the mechanisms of nonlinear absorption. The work was divided into two main parts. In the first the goal was to find compounds that are good optical limiters in solution. The possibility of isolating the chromophore site by dendron shielding and the effects of incorporating a thiophene ring into the organic molecular system were also explored. In addition, a new route for synthesizing these compounds was developed. The second part was focused on incorporating the most interesting compounds into solid materials. The preparation and characterization of Pt(II) acetylides with molecular groups for covalent attachment to a silica matrix via the solution gel approach is described.

  • Configuration Service in Cloud based Automation Systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference). - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Computer Society. ; , s. 5238-5245
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current challenges in production automation requires the involvement of new technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Systems of Systems and local automation clouds. The objective of this paper is to address one of the challenges involved in establishing and managing a cloud based automation system. Three key capabilities have been identified as required to create the expected benefits of local automation clouds; 1) capturing of plant design 2) capturing and distributing configuration and deployment information 3) coordinating information exchange. This paper addresses the capturing and distribution of configuration and deployment information. For this purpose a system service is proposed, the ConfigurationStore, following the principles of the Arrowhead Framework. The service is accompanied by a deployment methodology and a bootstrapping procedure. These are discussed for several types of automation technology, e.g. controllers, sensors, actuators. A qualitative evaluation of the proposed approach is made for four use cases; Building automation, Manufacturing automation, Process automation and IoT devices. Concluding the usability for large-scale deployment and configuration of Industrial Internet of Things.

  • Engineering of IoT Automation Systems
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Major societal challenges such as environmental sustainability, availability of energy and raw materials, and globalisation are creating new requirements for many actors in society. These new requirements relate to efficiency, flexibility, sustainability, and competitiveness. While these aspects have all been around for some time, and many systems have been locally optimised with regards to one or a few of these requirements, recent advances in communication and processing capabilities promise increased possibilities for connecting different parts of society, allowing optimal operation on a much larger scale. While industrial production systems have been controlled electronically for decades, the digitisation of market channels and consumer systems, together with the possibility to interconnect different production facilities, now allow for automated interaction along the whole supply chain from raw materials to end users.Simultaneously, increased demand for efficiency forces increased specialisation among actors, which with increased possibilities of interconnectivity, creates large enterprises of cooperating, specialised stakeholders. One of the major remaining obstacles for a widespread adaptation of more intelligent, more connected systems, able to deliver these envisioned results, is a coherent approach to the engineering and management of Systems-of-Systems involving very large numbers of devices and operating across several automation domains. For traditional automation systems there are established engineering procedures and numerous standards for engineering data, although most are focused on the static processes that have traditionally been the norm. For full integration with a digital society many of the existing automation systems will need significant modifications and as many automation systems are ageing and in need of replacement, a suitable solution to this may be a large scale migration to new automation solutions. The work presented in this thesis includes some new approaches and methodologies to utilise the existing engineering procedures and standards, while introducing some of the flexibility proposed by the emerging technologies. The major technical solutions presented consist of a structure way to organise connected systems and how they are related, regardless of engineering standards used to design their interactions, and an approach to allow configuration of heterogeneous systems through service interactions.Further contributions include an approach for migrating certain categories of existing industrial control systems to a service oriented architecture, as a basic outline for adaption of the next generation of automation systems in industry.Certain remaining challenges have been identified, which have to be addressed for a successful launch of widespread interconnected automation systems based on Internet of Things and associated technologies.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International journal of computer integrated manufacturing (Print). - : Taylor & Francis. - 0951-192X .- 1362-3052. ; 31:2, s. 175-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) in industrial automation promises an improved cross-layer integration as well as a functionality decoupled from the technical implementation. Compared with the earlier investigated manufacturing industry, control systems in the process industry reveal additional challenges in terms of migration from a legacy control system to an SOA control system. The successful migration of a highly integrated process control system, without reducing reliability or availability and, at the same time, preserving functionality and productivity, requires a detailed plan and certain specialised technology. This paper presents the challenges in the migration of a process control system and proposes a structured method for migration. The migration procedure proposed comprises four steps: initiation, configuration, data processing, and control execution. A technology demonstration at a pelletizing plant illustrates how the first of these steps could be implemented.

    • Tackling current challenges in production automation requiresthe involvement of new concepts like Internet of Things,System-of-Systems and local automation clouds. The objective of this paper is to address the actual process of defining a cloud based automation system. More specifically the design, engineering, operation and maintenance of an automation system must be captured and managed between all stakeholders involved. This is critical to create the expected benefits from the local automation cloud approach. This paper addresses the capability of capturing plant designs and coordinating information exchange based on the captured architecture. For this purpose an architectural component --~Plant Description~-- is proposed to be used in the Arrowhead Framework, based on already existing plant automation standards. An overview of methodologies on how it can interact with the Arrowhead Framework's Orchestration process describes the usefulness in managing large-scale automation systems.A qualitative evaluation for one of the proposed approaches is also described in a water control use case that can be found both in process and building automation.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN). - Piscataway, NJ : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 730-735
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence and deployment of connected devices in many domains of application (e.g. industrial production, buildings and facilities, urban environment, etc.) have resulted in the need to achieve integration of multiple and more complex systems. This new environment is stressing the intrinsic limits imposed by monolithic standards, data models and integration methods that focus on specific domains of application, types of systems, or specific aspects of a system. This paper describes the Plant Description Service developed as part of the Arrowhead Interoperability framework (EU ECSEL funded project). The manuscript contains a description of the abstract system descriptive model based on which the Plant Description service was implemented, and describes how the service can be used to achieve integration of several industry standards and data models. One use case and one case study is provided that illustrates how the service was practically implemented to support engineering scenarios in the domain of industrial production. The paper concludes with a critical review of the approach and suggestion for future work and developments.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze here the topic of integration, in the area of process automation, from sensor/actuator levels to plant management levels. The communication at fieldbus level is based on wireless technology while management applications run in wired control systems, but can also be distributed, communicating via the Internet. This work aims at building a real-life demonstrator at Boliden, a mining and smelting plant located in Boliden, Sweden. A small process control environment is to be deployed at the plant to supervise a tank level control system. Targeted results are an interface between wireless and wired systems, the deployment of a wireless process control environment at Boliden, and the development of the enterprise business management facilities.

    • The procedure of migrating SCADA and DCS func- tionality of the isa95 process automation architecture to a Service based automation architecture is discussed. Challenges in such migration are discussed and defined. From here the necessary migration technology and procedures are proposed. The critical migration technology is based on the mediator concept. The migration procedure is based on a functionality perspective and comprises four steps: initiation, configuration, data processing and control execution. Its argued that these steps are necessary for the successful migration of DCS and SCADA functionality in to the automation cloud.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As process control and monitoring systems based on a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) are maturing, the need increases for a systematic approach to migrate systems. The legacy systems are traditionally based on a strict hierarchy and in order to gradually allow additional cross-layer interaction, the migration procedure needs to consider both—functionality and architecture of the legacy system. The migration procedure proposed here aims to preserve the functional integration, organize the SOA cloud through grouping of devices, and maintain the performance aspects such as real-time control throughout the whole migration procedure.

  • Foreign aid in Africa : learning from country experiences
  • 1997
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This volume reports on the findings of an international research project on aid effectiveness in Africa. Research teams in eight African countries in collaboration with northern research institutes conducted field work to seek to understand why aid often failed to promote development and how it could be improved. The volume provides evidence that Africa's economic crisis has had a devastating effect on aid effectiveness and that too often, donors dominate aid decisions, leaving governments without any sense of ownership over their own development efforts. The volume concludes that to become more effective in the future, aid to Africa will have to find ways to develop more effective public institutions that are able to fully take charge of the development process.

  • 1996

  • Coping, Psychiatric Morbidity and Perceived Care in Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many patients with an aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) exhibit difficulties in rehabilitation, even in cases of a good prognosis. The present project investigates this using qualitative methods and standardised outcome measures. Patients with SAH treated at Uppsala University Hospital between 2002 and 2005 with an expected good prognosis were consecutively included. In addition, nurses working with such patients were interviewed. Outcome was assessed in terms of perception of care, psychiatric health, coping and health related quality of life (HRQoL). Qualitative content analyses revealed eight categories, which were divided into two patterns, Confident or Pessimistic perception of recovery, largely on the basis of the presence or absence of depression. Eighty-three patients were assessed by The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, Axis I (SCID-I). Forty-one percent fulfilled criteria for any psychiatric disorder seven months after SAH and 45 % presented with a history of lifetime psychiatric morbidity. Logistic regressions indicated that a psychiatric history was related to a higher risk of psychiatric problems seven months after SAH, as well as a lower return to work. SAH patients had lower HRQoL than the general Swedish population; almost entirely in the subgroup with a psychiatric history prior to the SAH. Those with a psychiatric history used more evasive, fatalistic, emotive and palliative coping strategies associated with inability to handle illness. Multiple regressions revealed that a psychiatric history and use of coping were independently associated with HRQoL, albeit more in the mental than the physical domains. Qualitative content analyses revealed that nurses viewed patients’ support needs as a process ranging from technological to emotional care. Shortcomings in the communication between nurses in acute and rehabilitation settings on the subject of support were acknowledged. The results underline the importance of early diagnosis of coexisting psychiatric illness and the need for an intact health care chain.

  • Release of active pharmaceutical ingredients from Indian bulk drug manufacture – environmental fate and effects on antibiotic resistance development, microbial ecosystems and vertebrate physiology
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, November 16-20, Tampa, USA.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Last year, we published a paper showing extraordinary high levels of several drugs in treated effluent from a plant receiving process water from about 90 bulk drug manufacturers from the Hyderabad region in India. Particularly, the levels of various fluoroquinolones (up to 31 mg/L) called for more information on the potential development of antibiotic resistance of exposed bacteria, as well as potential ecological effects on microbial ecosystems. In this study we will present the first characterization of 93 strains of bacteria sampled inside the treatment facility for their sensitivity/resistance to 39 different antibiotics. Furthermore, controlled exposure experiments suggest that the treated effluent affects the functional structure of natural freshwater microbial communities at a dilution of 1:1000. Short to medium-term exposure experiments with frogs and fish demonstrate sublethal effects of the treated effluent at similar dilutions, suggesting that expected environmental effects are not restricted to disturbed microorganism communities. Data on the fate of different pharmaceuticals in a gradient up and downstream from the treatment facility will be presented, as well as levels in drinking water wells in seven nearby villages, showing a transport of drugs via the groundwater. We conclude that the environmental impact of drug production in the Hyderabad region is of great environmental concern. We will also present summary data on the origin of active substances present in pharmaceutical products on the Swedish market, implying an international responsibility for improving the environmental pollution situation related to bulk drug production in India.

  • Exposure to an anti-androgenic herbicide negatively impacts reproductive physiology and fertility in Xenopustropicalis
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amphibians are threatened on a global scale and pollutants may be contributing to population declines, but how chemicals impact on their reproduction is poorly understood. We conducted a life cycle analysis to investigate the impacts of early life exposure to two anti-androgens (exposure until completion of metamorphosis;stage 66): flutamide, (50 µg/L)/linuron (9 and 45 µg/L)) on sexual development and breeding competence in Xenopus tropicalis. Our analyses included: mRNA levels of dmrt1, cyp17, amh, cyp19, foxl2 and ar (tadpoles/metamorphs), gonadal histomorphology (metamorphs/adults), mRNA levels of ar/gr (adult male brain/gonad/forelimb), testosterone/corticosterone levels (adult males), secondary sexual characteristics (forelimb width/nuptial pad: adult males) and breeding competence (amplexus/fertility: adult males). Compared to controls, feminised sex ratios and increased number of spermatogonia (adults) were observed after exposure to flutamide and the lower linuron concentration. Exposure to the lower linuron concentration also resulted in demasculinisation of secondary sexual characteristics and reduced male fertility. Flutamide exposure resulted in masculinisation of the nuptial pad and elevated mRNA levels of dmrt1, cyp17, amh and foxl2 in brains (metamorphs). Testosterone levels were higher in all treatment groups, however, overall few effects were observed in response to the higher linuron concentration. Our findings advance understanding of reproductive biology of X. tropicalis and illustrate negative effects of linuron on reproductive processes at a concentration measured in freshwater environments.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Toxicology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-445X .- 1879-1514. ; 200, s. 93-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pharmaceutical residues and other micro-contaminants may enter aquatic environments through effluent from sewage treatment plants (STPs) and could cause adverse effects in wild fish. One strategy to alleviate this situation is to improve wastewater treatment by ozonation. To test the effectiveness of full-scale wastewater effluent ozonation at a Swedish municipal STP, the added removal efficiency was measured for 105 pharmaceuticals. In addition, gene expression, reproductive and behavioral endpoints were analyzed in zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed on-site over 21 days to ozonated or non-ozonated effluents as well as to tap water. Ozone treatment (7 g O-3/m(3)) removed pharmaceuticals by an average efficiency of 77% in addition to the conventional treatment, leaving 11 screened pharmaceuticals above detection limits. Differences in biological responses of the exposure treatments were recorded in gene expression, reproduction and behavior. Hepatic vitellogenin gene expression was higher in male zebrafish exposed to the ozonated effluent compared to the non-ozonated effluent and tap water treatments. The reproductive success was higher in fish exposed to ozonated effluent compared to non-ozonated effluent and to tap water. The behavioral measurements showed that fish exposed to the ozonated STP effluent were less active in swimming the first minute after placed in a novel vessel. Ozonation is a capable method for removing pharmaceuticals in effluents. However, its implementation should be thoroughly evaluated for any potential biological impact. Future research is needed for uncovering the factors which produced the in vivo responses in fish.

  • Aid and poverty reduction in Zambia : mission unaccomplished
  • 2002
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Zambia, a once prosperous African country, now has 73 percent of its people below the poverty line and by the early 1990s, the country had reached a level where the UN General Assembly included it on the list of the least developed countries. With crippling indebtedness amidst poor economic performance, Zambia is at present one of the world's most heavily indebted low-income countries. And poverty continues to take its toll with the province housing the capital city registering the highest increase in poverty over the 1996 to 1998 period. This means that, although rural areas have the highest poverty levels, Zambia's urban centres are fast catching up. With help from donors, poverty reduction is at the centre stage on the Zambia development agenda after almost two decades of externally prescribed experiments with adjustment and stabilisation as a panacea for welfare improvement. But despite significant aid volumes and structural reforms, the country is getting deeper and deeper into poverty. What is the missing link between aid and positive change? Is the problem mainly that the volume of aid is not sufficient and, as is often heard, more of it would make a difference? Is the sluggish social and economic progress in Zambia appropriately diagnosed and correct remedies and strategies prescribed? This book attempts to address these and related questions.

  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Does aid work? This book examines this issue. But rather than trying to establish how effective aid has been, the focus is shifted towards to one of the key edterminants of effectiveness - the aid relationship. It looks at the relationship between Zambia and its donors and discusses the likely impact of aid in a country where poverty has become rampant and the international debt has reached unmanageable proportions.

  • South-south relations in a changing world order
  • 1982
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The traditional division of labour in the world economy, with its clearest expressions during the colonial period, is gradually disappearing. The emerging world order exhibits as one of its most significant features, increasing economic and political contacts between countries situated in the South. This trend represents a challenge to the previously so dominant North-South relations. It therefore raises a number of important questions, particularly with regard to the future of the South. To examine and discuss the problem areas involved, the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies organized a seminar in May 1981 on "The Emergence of South-South Relations in a Changing World Order". The agenda of the seminar concentrated on two major issues: Do South-South relations contain possibilities for development in the South not found in the old international division of labour? Or do they simply possess the same exploitative characteristics as the classic North-South exchange, therefore creating a process of accelerating unequal development in the South? The present volume addresses itself to these important issues by focusing on two particularly interesting cases of expansionism in the South, the Brazilian penetration of West Africa and the Indian activities in Asia and Africa.
