  • Spin yields of neutron-rich nuclei from deep inelastic reactions
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 60:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential for using deep inelastic reactions to populate high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei is studied in a series of experiments using GAMMASPHERE for gamma-ray detection and a silicon strip detector for measuring the angles of projectilelike and targetlike fragments. In three experiments 61 new transitions up to a maximum spin of 22 (h) over bar in 12 neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei were found. We observe that gamma-ray yields as a function of spin are flatter for all neutron transfer products than for inelastic excitation of either the projectile or target nucleus. Calculations are presented which indicate that this difference cannot be accounted for by quasielastic processes, but more likely are the result of larger energy loss processes, such as deep inelastic reactions. • Superdeformation in 68Zn: Evidence for a New, Neutron-rich Island of Superdeformation in A~70 Nuclei
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 82, s. 5217-5220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A superdeformed rotational structure is reported in the stable nucleus Zn-68. It has a transition quadrupole moment (Q(t)) of 2.5(-0.4)(+0.7) e b (beta(2) approximate to 0.4), as measured by the residual Doppler shift method. Theoretical calculations suggest that two different configurations are possible candidates for this band. One is built without h(11/2) neutrons, as seen in superdeformed bands in the A similar to 60 region, while the other involves one h(11/2) neutron in analogy with superdeformed bands in the A similar to 80 region. The second of these candidate configurations is preferred, thus establishing a new, neutron-rich (relative to the line of beta stability) region of superdeformation with Z similar to 30 and N similar to 38.

  • Shears bands in Pb-193
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 54:3, s. 1106-1116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four bands of enhanced dipole transitions, with weak crossovers, have been observed in Pb-195. Three of these bands are connected to the spherical levels. in addition, the spherical level scheme has been extended. The nuclear spectroscopy was done with the early implementation of GAMMASPHERE and HERA arrays of Get detectors. The nucleus Pb-193 was populated in the Yb-174(Mg-24,5n) reaction at beam energies of 129, 131, and 134 MeV. The experimental results are compared to tilted-axis cranking calculations. The systematical behavior of the dipole bands in the heavier odd-A Pb isotopes, Pb-195,Pb-197,Pb-199,Pb-201, is also discussed.

  • Observation of superdeformed states in Mo-88
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - New York : SPRINGER VERLAG. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 6:4, s. 391-397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Mo-88 were studied using the GAMMASPHERE germanium detector array in conjunction with the MICROBALL CsI(TI) charged-particle detector system. Three gamma-ray cascades with dynamic moments of inertia showing similar characteristics to superdeformed rotational bands observed in the neighbouring A = 80 region have been identified and assigned to the nucleus Mo-88. The quadrupole moment of the strongest band, deduced by the Residual Doppler Shift Method, corresponds to a quadrupole deformation of beta(2) approximate to 0.6. This confirms the superdeformed nature of this band. The experimental data are interpreted in the framework of total routhian surface calculations. All three hands are assigned to two-quasi-particle proton configurations at superdeformed shape.

  • Favoured superdeformed states in 89TC
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - New York : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 6:3, s. 251-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A superdeformed band consisting of a cascade of ten gamma-ray transitions has been identified and assigned to the nucleus Tc-89, close to the proton dripline. The quadrupole moment of the band (Q(t) = 6.7(-2.3)(+3.0) eb, as measured by the Residual Doppler Shift Method) as well as a large dynamic moment of inertia point to a highly elongated shape. With a relative population of approximately 15% of the gamma-ray flux in the Tc-89 exit channel, thp band is among the most intense superdeformed bands observed to date.

  • Superdeformation in bismuth
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 53:1, s. 117-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High angular momentum states in Bi-195-197 are populated in two reactions: W-183(F-19,xn)Bi-202-x and Ta-181(Ne-20,xn)Bi-201-x at beam energies of 108 and 123 MeV, respectively. Gamma rays were detected using the Gammasphere array. Three weakly populated rotational sequences have been found. They each have properties characteristic of other superdeformed bands in this mass region. On the basis of cross-bombardment information we believe that one band belongs to each of Bi-195, Bi-196, and Bi-197. The properties of the bands in the odd-Bi nuclei are best reproduced if the odd proton occupies the favored signature of the [651]1/2 orbital, while the band in Bi-196 has this same proton configuration coupled to an additional N=7 (j(15/2)) neutron. The relative behavior of the J((2)) moments of inertia can be qualitatively understood in terms of Pauli-blocking effects.

  • Band termination spectroscopy in 157Er
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - 0954-3899. ; 21:2, s. 193-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level scheme of 157Er has been extended from a spin region where the nucleus behaves as a prolate rotor to a region where the spin is produced by the alignment of all or most of the available valence nucleons along the symmetry axis of a weakly deformed oblate shape. The level scheme was established at high spin using up to four-fold gamma -ray coincidences detected in the Eurogam spectrometer following the reaction 114Cd( 48Ca,5n)157Er at a bombarding energy of 210 MeV. Particularly favoured states have been established at IK=69/2+, 81/2+, 71/2+, 77/2-, 87-/2 and 89-/2. Specific single-particle configurations are assigned to these special states by comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. These states are related to structures observed in the neighbouring nuclei 158Er and 157Ho. These data provide the spectrum of single-particle states for the lowest lying valence orbitals above the 146Gd closed core.

  • Collective excitations and band termination in Nb-85
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 645:1, s. 47-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Nb-85 were studied using the GAMMASPHERE Ge detector array and the MICROBALL charged-particle detector system. Three gamma-ray cascades with collective rotational characteristics were observed. One of the bands exhibits a forking at the top, most likely reflecting the termination of one branch into a favoured non-collective, near spherical state. The data are interpreted in terms of cranked Strutinsky-type calculations.

  • Search for hyperdeformation in Gd-146,Gd-147
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 54:4, s. 1585-1588
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search was undertaken to look for evidence of hyperdeformation in Gd-146,Gd-147. Three experiments employing Gammasphere for gamma-ray detection coupled with the Microball for channel selection via charged particle detection were carried out with increasing detection sensitivity and statistics. No definitive evidence for band structures that could be assigned to hyperdeformation could be found. Candidates previously reported are shown not to have properties consistent with a band structure.

  • Superdeformation in Po-198
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 53:2, s. R541-R543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Yb-174(Si-29,5n) reaction at 148 MeV with thin targets was used to populate high-angular momentum states in Po-198. Resulting gamma rays were observed with Gammasphere. A weakly populated superdeformed band of 10 gamma-ray transitions was found and has been assigned to Po-198. This is the first observation of an SD band in the A approximate to 190 region in a nucleus with Z > 83. The J((2))) of the new band is very similar to those of the yrast SD bands in Hg-194 and Pb-196. The intensity profile suggests that this band is populated through states close to where the SD band crosses the yrast line and the angular momentum at which the fission process dominates.
