    • This biennial Review summarizes much of particle physics. Using data from previous editions., plus 2778 new measurements from 645 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs bosons, heavy neutrinos, and supersymmetric particles. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as the Standard Model, particle detectors., probability, and statistics. Among the 108 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised including those on CKM quark-mixing matrix, V-ud & V-us, V-cb & V-ub, top quark, muon anomalous magnetic moment, extra dimensions, particle detectors, cosmic background radiation, dark matter, cosmological parameters, and big bang cosmology.

  • European phenological response to climate change matches the warming pattern
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 12:10, s. 1969-1976
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global climate change impacts can already be tracked in many physical and biological systems; in particular, terrestrial ecosystems provide a consistent picture of observed changes. One of the preferred indicators is phenology, the science of natural recurring events, as their recorded dates provide a high-temporal resolution of ongoing changes. Thus, numerous analyses have demonstrated an earlier onset of spring events for mid and higher latitudes and a lengthening of the growing season. However, published single-site or single-species studies are particularly open to suspicion of being biased towards predominantly reporting climate change-induced impacts. No comprehensive study or meta-analysis has so far examined the possible lack of evidence for changes or shifts at sites where no temperature change is observed. We used an enormous systematic phenological network data set of more than 125000 observational series of 542 plant and 19 animal species in 21 European countries (1971-2000). Our results showed that 78% of all leafing, flowering and fruiting records advanced (30% significantly) and only 3% were significantly delayed, whereas the signal of leaf colouring/fall is ambiguous. We conclude that previously published results of phenological changes were not biased by reporting or publication predisposition: the average advance of spring/summer was 2.5 days decade -1 in Europe. Our analysis of 254 mean national time series undoubtedly demonstrates that species' phenology is responsive to temperature of the preceding months (mean advance of spring/summer by 2.5 days °C -1, delay of leaf colouring and fall by 1.0 day °C -1). The pattern of observed change in spring efficiently matches measured national warming across 19 European countries (correlation coefficient r = -0.69, P < 0.001).

  • Rivaroxaban for thromboprophylaxis after orthopaedic surgery: pooled analysis of two studies
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Thromb Haemost. - 0340-6245. ; 97:6, s. 931-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rivaroxaban (BAY 59-7939) is an oral, direct factor Xa inhibitor in clinical development for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). This analysis of pooled results from two phase II studies of rivaroxaban for VTE prevention after major orthopaedic surgery aimed to strengthen the conclusions of the individual studies. One study was conducted in patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR; N = 722), and one in patients undergoing total knee replacement (TKR; N = 621). In both studies, patients were randomized, doubleblind, to oral, twice-daily (bid) rivaroxaban beginning after surgery, or subcutaneous enoxaparin (40 mg once daily beginning before THR, and 30 mg bid beginning after TKR). Treatment continued until mandatory bilateral venography was performed 5-9 days after surgery. Total VTE (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and all-cause mortality) occurred in 16.1-24.4% of per-protocol patients receiving rivaroxaban 5-60 mg, and 27.8% receiving enoxaparin (n = 914). There was a flat dose response relationship between rivaroxaban and total VTE (p = 0.39). Major bleeding (safety population, n = 1,317) increased dose-dependently with rivaroxaban (p < 0.001), occurring in 0.9%, 1.3%, 2.1%, 3.9%, and 7.0% of patients receiving rivaroxaban total daily doses of 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 mg, respectively, versus 1.7% of patients receiving enoxaparin. No routine coagulation monitoring was performed, and there were no significant differences between dose response relationships with rivaroxaban after THR and TKR. Overall, rivaroxaban total daily doses of 5-20 mg had the most favorable balance of efficacy and safety, relative to enoxaparin, for the prevention of VTE after major orthopaedic surgery.

  • Predicting catalysis : understanding ammonia synthesis from first-principles calculations
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - 1520-6106 .- 1520-5207. ; 110, s. 17719-17735
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here, we give a full account of a large collaborative effort toward an atomic-scale understanding of modern industrial ammonia production over ruthenium catalysts. We show that overall rates of ammonia production can be determined by applying various levels of theory (including transition state theory with or without tunneling corrections, and quantum dynamics) to a range of relevant elementary reaction steps, such as N(2) dissociation, H(2) dissociation, and hydrogenation of the intermediate reactants. A complete kinetic model based on the most relevant elementary steps can be established for any given point along an industrial reactor, and the kinetic results can be integrated over the catalyst bed to determine the industrial reactor yield. We find that, given the present uncertainties, the rate of ammonia production is well-determined directly from our atomic-scale calculations. Furthermore, our studies provide new insight into several related fields, for instance, gas-phase and electrochemical ammonia synthesis. The success of predicting the outcome of a catalytic reaction from first-principles calculations supports our point of view that, in the future, theory will be a fully integrated tool in the search for the next generation of catalysts.

  • Extended duration rivaroxaban versus short-term enoxaparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after total hip arthroplasty: a double-blind, randomised controlled trial
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Lancet. - 1474-547X. ; 372:9632, s. 31-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The risk of venous thromboembolism is high after total hip arthroplasty and could persist after hospital discharge. Our aim was to compare the use of rivaroxaban for extended thromboprophylaxis with short-term thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin. METHODS: 2509 patients scheduled to undergo elective total hip arthroplasty were randomly assigned, stratified according to centre, with a computer-generated randomisation code, to receive oral rivaroxaban 10 mg once daily for 31-39 days (with placebo injection for 10-14 days; n=1252), or enoxaparin 40 mg once daily subcutaneously for 10-14 days (with placebo tablet for 31-39 days; n=1257). The primary efficacy outcome was the composite of deep-vein thrombosis (symptomatic or asymptomatic detected by mandatory, bilateral venography), non-fatal pulmonary embolism, and all-cause mortality up to day 30-42. Analyses were done in the modified intention-to-treat population, which consisted of all patients who had received at least one dose of study medication, had undergone planned surgery, and had adequate assessment of thromboembolism. This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00332020. FINDINGS: The modified intention-to-treat population for the analysis of the primary efficacy outcome consisted of 864 patients in the rivaroxaban group and 869 in the enoxaparin group. The primary outcome occurred in 17 (2.0%) patients in the rivaroxaban group, compared with 81 (9.3%) in the enoxaparin group (absolute risk reduction 7.3%, 95% CI 5.2-9.4; p<0.0001). The incidence of any on-treatment bleeding was much the same in both groups (81 [6.6%] events in 1228 patients in the rivaroxaban safety population vs 68 [5.5%] of 1229 patients in the enoxaparin safety population; p=0.25). INTERPRETATION: Extended thromboprophylaxis with rivaroxaban was significantly more effective than short-term enoxaparin plus placebo for the prevention of venous thromboembolism, including symptomatic events, in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.

  • Donepezil in Alzheimer's disease : What to expect after 3 years of treatment in a routine clinical setting
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders. - Basel : S. Karger AG. - 1420-8008 .- 1421-9824. ; 23:3, s. 150-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Aims: Clinical short-term trails have shown positive effects of donepezil treatment in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The outcome of continuous long-term treatment in the routine clinical settings remains to be investigated. Methods: The Swedish Alzheimer Treatment Study (SATS) is a descriptive, prospective, longitudinal, multicentre study. Four hundred and thirty-five outpatients with the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, received treatment with donepezil. Patients were assessed with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog), global rating (CIBIC) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) at baseline and every 6 months for a total period of 3 years. Results: The mean MMSE change from baseline was positive for more than 6 months and in subgroups of patients for 12 months. After 3 years of treatment the mean change from baseline in MMSE-score was 3.8 points (95% CI, 3.0-4.7) and the ADAS-cog rise was 8.2 points (95% CI, 6.4-10.1). This is better than expected in untreated historical cohorts, and better than the ADAS-cog rise calculated by the Stern equation (15.6 points, 95% CI, 14.5-16.6). After 3 years with 38% of the patients remaining, 30% of the them were unchanged or improved in the global assessment. Conclusion: Three-year donepezil treatment showed a positive global and cognitive outcome in the routine clinical setting. Copyright © 2007 S. Karger AG.

  • Safety assessment of new antithrombotic agents : Lessons from the EXTEND study on ximelagatran.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Thrombosis Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0049-3848 .- 1879-2472. ; 123:3, s. 488-497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Ximelagatran, the first oral direct thrombin inhibitor, was shown to be an effective antithrombotic agent but was associated with potential liver toxicity after prolonged administration. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: The aim of the EXTEND study was to assess safety and efficacy of extended administration (35 days) of ximelagatran or enoxaparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after elective hip replacement and hip fracture surgery. A follow-up period, including assessment of liver enzymes (in particular alanine aminotransferase; ALAT), until post-operative day 180 was planned, with visits at days 56 and 180. RESULTS: Randomization and administration of study drugs were stopped following a report of serious liver injury occurring 3 weeks after completion of ximelagatran treatment. At the time of study termination, 1158 patients had been randomized and 641 had completed the 35-day treatment; with 303 ximelagatran and 265 enoxaparin patients remaining in the study through to the day 56 follow-up visit. Overall, 58 patients showed an ALAT increase to >2x upper limit of normal: 31 treated with enoxaparin, 27 with ximelagatran. Three ximelagatran patients also showed symptoms potentially related to liver toxicity. Eleven ximelagatran patients showed an ALAT increase after study treatment ended. The clinical development of ximelagatran was terminated and the drug withdrawn from the market. Evaluation of the relative efficacy of the two treatments as specified in the protocol was impossible due to the premature termination of the study. CONCLUSIONS: Prolonged administration of ximelagatran was associated with an increased risk of liver toxicity. In a substantial proportion of patients, ALAT increase occurred after treatment withdrawal. The findings seen with ximelagatran should be considered when designing studies with new antithrombotic agents.

  • Health Status at Long-Term Follow-Up in Patients Treated for Extremity Localized Ewing Sarcoma or Osteosarcoma: A Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Blood & Cancer. - : Wiley. - 1545-5017 .- 1545-5009. ; 53:1, s. 84-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. The purpose of this study was to evaluate late effects and symptom complaints in long-term survivors (>5 years) of Extremity Bone Sarcoma (EBS Survivors). The results were compared with findings in age- and gender-matched individuals from the general Population (NORMs). Patients and Methods. Among 155 EBS Survivors approached, 133 (86%) were included, and 110 of them (83%) attended an outpatient examination. Health status was evaluated by a mailed questionnaire concerning demographic and current health issues, and physical examinations at the outpatient clinic. Age- and gender-adjusted normative controls were drawn from participants of the Health Study of Nord-Trondelag County (HUNT 2). Results. Median age at follow-up was 29 (15-57) years. Median follow-up Was 12 (6-22) years. Of EBS Survivors 42% had >= 1 somatic disease, 33% had ototoxicity and 13% had reduced renal Function. EBS Survivors were more likely to have heart disease (odds ratio [OR], 7.9; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 2.5-25.3; P=0.001), hypertension (OR, 3.4; 95% Cl, 1.1-10.1; P=0.03) and thyroid disease (OR, 3.0; 95%, Cl, 1.1-8.3; P=0.04) compared to NORMs. EBS Survivors reported more diarrhoea (29% vs. 19%, P=0.02), palpitations (23% vs. 13%, P=0.01) and shortness of breath (11% vs. 5%, P=0.01) than NORMs. Conclusions. EBS Survivors have poorer health status compared to age- and gender-matched controls. Long-term follow-up of these patients is therefore mandatory. Pediatr Blood Cancer 2009;53:84-89. • Allergy and clinical immunology services in europe*
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Allergy.. ; 61:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Allergology and Clinical Immunology (ACI) is an area of clinical medicine with a precise identity, relevant recent scientific achievements and well-defined educational and professional needs. In spite of the high individual and socio-economic impact of allergic diseases in Europe, the organization of ACI services is imperfect and varies among countries according to their health policies and priorities. In the firm belief of the role of ACI specialists in addressing clinical issues related to the involvement of the immune system in health and diseases-such as vaccination, immunodeficiencies, susceptibility and response to microbial agents, autoimmune and allergic diseases, immune aspects of transplantation and malignancies, in vivo and in vitro immunological tests, vaccinations, immuno-modifiers-the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology appointed an ad hoc Task Force to produce standards for ACI Services in Europe. The resulting position paper should be used as a consulting reference for National Health Services as a necessary pre-requisite for the free circulation to patients and health care professionals.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-9488 .- 1502-4725. ; 63:6, s. 443-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The diagnostic ability of general practitioners (GPs) concerning mental disorders is not optimal, and could be improved by structured diagnostic interviews. Various aspects of the Structured Psychiatric Interview for General Practice (SPIFA) are examined. Aims: The inter-rater reliability of the SPIFA, the time used by GPs and specialists and the GPs satisfaction are examined. The properties of the SPIFA are compared with those of the Prime-MD and the MINI schedules. Methods: Inter-rater reliability of the SPIFA was tested in 336 patients in general practice. The patients were randomized to two interview strategies. Either both GPs and psychiatrists used the SPIFA, or GPs used the SPIFA and psychiatrists a modified version of the SCID for Axis I disorders. The satisfaction was investigated by a questionnaire sent to 1000 GPs who had SPIFA training. Results: The SPIFA showed adequate inter-rater reliability for depression, anxiety disorders and increased suicidal risk for both interview strategies. In patients with more than two co-morbid disorders, the inter-rater reliability was poor. The mean duration of SPIFA was 21 min for SPIFA screening and 22 min for SPIFA manual. The 192 GPs responding to the questionnaire were mostly satisfied with the SPIFA. Conclusions: The SPIFA seems to be a reliable, valid and helpful instrument for GPs making diagnoses of mental disorders in their patients. Compared with the Prime MD and the MINI, the SPIFA seemed to have comparable psychometric properties but better feasibility in primary care.

    • In an analysis of the Melagatran Thrombosis Prophylaxis in Orthopedic Surgery (METHRO) III study, we evaluated whether concomitant administration of aspirin (ASA) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) with the direct thrombin inhibitor melagatran/ximelagatran or the low-molecular-weight heparin enoxaparin increased bleeding in patients undergoing major joint surgery. Further objectives were to compare the influence of the timing of initial postoperative administration of melagatran/ximelagatran on bleeding in orthopedic patients receiving ASA/NSAIDs and in comparison with the preoperative administration of enoxaparin. ASA or NSAIDs in conjunction with melagatran/ximelagatran or enoxaparin did not increase bleeding. Bleeding rates were not significantly different, irrespective of the timing of the initial postoperative dose of melagatran/ximelagatran (4-8 vs. 4-12 h) when compared with preoperative (12 h) administration of enoxaparin. Transfusion rates were significantly lower with administration of melagatran/ximelagatran compared with enoxaparin.

  • Major joint replacement. A model for antithrombotic drug development: from proof-of-concept to clinical use
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International angiology. - 0392-9590. ; 27:1, s. 60-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: Development of antithrombotic compounds has traditionally been performed in patients undergoing total hip and knee replacement surgery. A high number of asymptomatic deep-vein thromboses are radiologically detectable, and bleeding and other adverse events (AE) are easy to observe. However, standardization of study procedures and endpoints in early proof-of-concept studies and late pure clinical endpoint studies has been lacking. This has made comparison between studies difficult, economic analyses speculative and potential benefits of applying the drug regimen in non-selected patients uncertain. In this paper, the International Surgical Thrombosis Forum proposes a strategy for the clinical investigation of new pharmacological agents for the prophylaxis of postoperative thrombotic events. METHODS: First, dose titration safety studies of short duration, in highly selected patients using objective venographic endpoints are recommended. Bleeding should be divided into the quantified volume of surgical bleeding and other adjudicated clinical bleeding events. The number of AE should be described for each dose step and classified according to International Coding of Diagnoses (ICD). Second, a dose confirmatory study of moderate exposure period and sufficient follow-up time is recommended. The exclusion criteria should be restricted to contraindications of the compared drugs and technical procedure. RESULTS: The efficacy, bleeding and AE should be similar to those used in dose-titration studies. In addition, the failure rate of the drug to exert its effect and the net clinical benefit should be calculated. CONCLUSION: Finally, trials with simple clinical endpoints and long follow-up should be conducted to evaluate the potential benefits of the drug-regimen in non-selected populations.

  • Postoperative Melagatran/Ximelagatran for the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism following Major Elective Orthopaedic Surgery : Effects of Timing of First Dose and Risk Factors for Thromboembolism and Bleeding Complications on Efficacy and Safety
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Clin Drug Investig. - 1173-2563. ; 25:1, s. 65-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To examine the influence of timing of postoperative initiation of subcutaneous melagatran followed by oral ximelagatran, and of risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE; including deep vein thrombosis [DVT] and pulmonary embolism [PE]) and bleeding complications, on the efficacy and safety of this regimen, compared with preoperative enoxaparin sodium, following total hip replacement (THR) or total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. DESIGN: Statistical analyses of efficacy and safety in subgroups of the METHRO III intention-to-treat population. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main efficacy outcome measures were major VTE (proximal DVT, PE or VTE-related death) and total VTE (distal or proximal DVT, fatal or non-fatal PE). The main safety outcome measures were blood transfusion, severe bleeding events, blood loss, bleeding-related adverse events and need for reoperation. RESULTS: In the combined THR and TKR population, melagatran initiated 4 - <8 hours postoperatively was non-inferior to enoxaparin sodium with respect to the risks of total VTE (absolute risk reduction [ARR] 0; 95% confidence interval [CI] -4.4, 4.4) and major VTE (ARR -0.63; 95% CI -2.94, 1.67). The rate of major VTE was unaffected by the different risk factors. In the combined THR and TKR population, blood transfusion requirements were lower with melagatran/ximelagatran than enoxaparin sodium (odds ratio 0.83; 95% CI 0.71, 0.96; p = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: Melagatran/ximelagatran initiated 4 - <8 hours postoperatively provided a comparable level of protection against total and major VTE to preoperative enoxaparin sodium. Major VTE rates and safety were consistent across different patient subgroups. Subcutaneous melagatran followed by fixed-dose oral ximelagatran offers an alternative to the standard European low molecular-weight heparin regimen in a wide range of patients.

  • Intercalibration of classical and molecular techniques for identification of Alexandrium fundyense (Dinophyceae) and estimation of cell densities
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Harmful Algae. - : Elsevier BV. - 1568-9883. ; 6:1, s. 56-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A workshop with the aim to compare classical and molecular techniques for phytoplankton enumeration took place at Kristineberg Marine Research Station, Sweden, in August 2005. Seventeen different techniques - nine classical microscopic-based and eight molecular methods - were compared. Alexandrium fundyense was the target organism in four experiments. Experiment 1 was designed to determine the range of cell densities over which the methods were applicable. Experiment 2 tested the species specificity of the methods by adding Alexandrium ostenfeldii, to samples containing A. fundyense. Experiments 3 and 4 tested the ability of the methods to detect the target organism within a natural phytoplankton community. Most of the methods could detect cells at the lowest concentration tested, 100 cells L-1, but the variance was high for methods using small volumes, such as counting chambers and slides. In general, the precision and reproducibility of the investigated methods increased with increased target cell concentration. Particularly molecular methods were exceptions in that their relative standard deviation did not vary with target cell concentration. Only two of the microscopic methods and three of the molecular methods had a significant linear relationship between their cell count estimates and the A. fundyense concentration in experiment 2, where the objective was to discriminate that species from a morphologically similar and genetically closely related species. None of the investigated methods were affected by the addition of a natural plankton community background matrix in experiment 3. The results of this study are discussed in the context of previous intercomparisons and the difficulties in defining the absolute, true target cell concentration. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. • A founder mutation for ichthyosis prematurity syndrome restricted to 76 kb by haplotype association
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Human Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-5161 .- 1435-232X. ; 51:10, s. 864-871
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI) is a group of keratinisation disorders that includes the ichthyosis prematurity syndrome (IPS). IPS is rare and almost exclusively present in a restricted region in the middle of Norway and Sweden, which indicates a founder effect for the disorder. We recently reported linkage of IPS to chromosome 9q34, and we present here the subsequent fine-mapping of this region with known and novel microsatellite markers as well as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Allelic association, evaluated with Fisher's exact test and P (excess), was used to refine the IPS haplotype to approximately 1.6 Mb. On the basis of the average length of the haplotype in IPS patients, we calculated the age of a founder mutation to approximately 1,900 years. The IPS haplotype contains a core region of 76 kb consisting of four marker alleles shared by 97.7% of the chromosomes associated with IPS. This region spans four known genes, all of which are expressed in mature epidermal cells. We present the results from the analysis of these four genes and their corresponding transcripts in normal and patient-derived samples.

  • FOXP3 polymorphisms in type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: J Autoimmun. - : Elsevier BV. - 0896-8411. ; 27:2, s. 140-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The FOXP3 gene encodes a transcription factor thought to be essential for the development and function of T regulatory cells. Two previous studies have tested common polymorphisms in FOXP3 for association with type 1 diabetes (T1D) with conflicting results. The aim of our study was to see whether there is any evidence of association between the FOXP3 polymorphisms previously reported to be associated with T1D, in a Caucasian population regarding T1D and coeliac disease (CD). We further looked for evidence of interaction between FOXP3 polymorphisms and HLA-DR3 in conferring susceptibility to T1D. Initially, we analysed two microsatellites in the FOXP3 gene in 363 T1D nuclear families. Our results indicated an association between FOXP3 and T1D (global p=0.004) and a possible interaction between FOXP3 and the HLA-DR3-DQ2 susceptibility haplotype. We then genotyped an additional independent set of 826 T1D patients and 1459 controls as well as one CD dataset consisting of 325 families. A similar tendency was revealed in the CD family material (pnc=0.055 for the associated allele). On the other hand, we were unable to reproduce our initial findings in the T1D case-control dataset (global p=0.6). Our results suggest that the tested FOXP3 markers do not have any major impact on susceptibility for these diseases.

  • Central nervous system involvement in severe congenital neutropenia : neurological and neuropsychological abnormalities associated with specific HAX1 mutations

  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 264:4, s. 388-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: Homozygous mutations in the HAX1 gene were recently identified in severe congenital neutropenia patients belonging to the original Kostmann family in northern Sweden. Our observations suggested that these patients also develop neurological and neuropsychological symptoms. METHODS: Detailed clinical studies and mutation analyses were performed in the surviving patients belonging to the Kostmann kindred and in two patients not related to this family, along with studies of HAX1 splice variant expression in normal human tissues. RESULTS: Five of six Kostmann family patients and one other patient from northern Sweden harboured homozygous HAX1 mutations (568C-->T, Q190X) and one carried a heterozygous ELA2 gene mutation. One Swedish patient of Kurdish extraction carried alternative homozygous HAX1 mutations (131G-->A, W44X). All the three patients with Q190X mutations who were alive and available for evaluation developed neurological disease with decreased cognitive function, and three of four patients who reached 10 years developed epilepsy. In contrast, the patients with the ELA2 and W44X HAX1 mutations, respectively, showed no obvious neurological abnormalities. Moreover, two alternative HAX1 splice variants were identified in normal human tissues, including the brain. Both transcripts contained exon 5, harbouring the Q190X mutation, whereas the 5' end of exon 2 containing the W44X mutation was spliced out from the second transcript. CONCLUSIONS: We describe neurological and neuropsychological abnormalities for the first time in Kostmann disease patients. These central nervous system symptoms appear to be associated with specific HAX1 mutations.

  • Hidden vortex lattices in a thermally paired superfluid
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 78:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the evolution of rotational response of a statistical mechanical model of two-component superfluid with a nondissipative drag interaction as the system undergoes a transition into a paired superfluid phase at finite temperature. The transition manifests itself in a change of (i) vortex-lattice symmetry and (ii) nature of the vortex state. Instead of a vortex lattice, the system forms a highly disordered tangle which constantly undergoes merger and reconnecting processes involving different types of vortices with a "hidden" breakdown of translation symmetry.

  • Preemptive vortex-loop proliferation in multicomponent interacting Bose-Einstein condensates
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 77:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use analytical arguments and large-scale Monte Carlo calculations to investigate the nature of the phase transitions between distinct complex superfluid phases in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate when a nondissipative drag between the two components is being varied. We focus on understanding the role of topological defects in various phase transitions and develop vortex-matter arguments, allowing an analytical description of the phase diagram. We find the behavior of fluctuation induced vortex matter to be much more complex and substantially different from that of single-component superfluids. We propose and numerically investigate a drag-induced "preemptive vortex loop proliferation" scenario. Such a transition may be a quite generic feature in many multicomponent systems where symmetry is restored by a gas of several kinds of competing vortex loops.

  • Unusual States of Vortex Matter in Mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensates on Rotating Optical Lattices
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 101:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a single-component superfluid under rotation a broken symmetry in the order parameter space results in a broken translational symmetry in real space: a vortex lattice. If translational symmetry is restored, the phase of the order parameter disorders and thus the broken symmetry in the order parameter space is also restored. We show that for Bose-Einstein condensate mixtures in optical lattices with negative dissipationless drag, a new situation arises. This state is a modulated vortex liquid which breaks translational symmetry in the direction transverse to the rotation vector.

  • Discourse analysis and oral history. Intersections of gender, locality, nation and religion in narratives from a Jewish refugee in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ENQUIRE. - 2041-6776. ; :1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we elaborate on the possibility to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history within one methodological framework in order to explore how identities are narrated and negotiated in relation to different situations, contexts and interviewers. In oral history, the purpose is often to “give voice” to marginalized or forgotten individuals or groups, to listen to their stories and give them the possibility to speak from their perspectives. We agree with these emancipatory aims of oral history. Simultaneously we deconstruct and analyze interviews in order to investigate identity constructions. We work with the concepts of intersectionality and narrated identity, which allow us to investigate how groups and individuals that are marginalized and discriminated negotiate their own and other identities. At the same time it is unclear if our interviewees understand these kinds of analysis of their narratives. In order to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history in a fruitful way, we must be aware of this relation of power and explain to the interviewees what we are doing and why we are doing it. In a broader research perspective this deconstructive approach illustrates interesting assumptions about multidimensional identity constructions.

  • Jødene i Polen
  • 2009
