  • Tre romantiska berättelser : Studier i Eyvind Johnsons Romantisk berättelse och Tidens gång, Lars Gustafssons Poeten Brumbergs sista dagar och död och Sven Delblancs Kastrater
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation explores the notion 'romantic story' as a literary device in three Swedish late modernist novels: Eyvind Johnson's Romantisk berättelse (1953) (Romantic Story) and Tidens gång. En romantisk berättelse (1955) (The Passage of Time. A Romantic Story), Lars Gustafsson's Poeten Brumbergs sista dagar och död. En romantisk berättelse (1959) (The Last Days and Death of the Poet Brumberg. A Romantic Story), and Sven Delblanc's Kastrater. En romantisk berättelse (1975) (Castrati. A Romantic Story). The study consists of three parts, one on each novel. In part, the dissertation turns around the word 'romantic' and the historical period designated by this name; and addresses the topic of what the term has come to mean in a period of late modernist aesthetics. In part, it is an investigation of the three novels as 'romantic stories', i.e. a study of the generic properties of the novels, and also of the novel as a literary genre. By the very nature of the study the approach is ecclectic, encompassing interests in paratextuality (chapters 2, 5, 10), narratology (chapter 3), autobiography (chapter 4), hypertextuality and intertextuality (chapters 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12), literary form (chapter 9), literary genres (chapter 10), as well as the relation between the literary work and the historical and cultural context that it is possible to construct around it (chapters 4, 6, 12, 13). However, the focus of the study always remains on the texts and how they work, making use of close reading as a strategic means of teasing out meaning and reference. The dissertation concludes with a chapter in which the three novels are looked at as group and from the point of view of the internal histor(icit)y of Modernism.

  • Direct displacement effects of labour market programmes : the case of Sweden
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using a panel of 260 Swedish municipalities over the period 1987-1996, this paper investigates the direct displacement effects of active labour market programmes (ALMPs). Compared to earlier studies on this topic, we have more and better data. From our GMM estimations, we find that (i) there are direct displacement effects from those ALMPs that generate subsidised labour (in the order of approximately 65 percent), but there seems to be no (significant) displacement effects from training, (ii) most ALMPs seem to increase labour force participation, and (iii) the adjustment to the optimal level of employment seems to be sluggish. A consequence of (ii) is that the earlier studies have overstated the displacement effects (since they normalised with the labour force).

  • Relationships between fungal uptake of ammonium, fungal growth and nitrogen availability in ectomycorrhizal Pinus sylvestris seedlings
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Mycorrhiza. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1890 .- 0940-6360. ; 8:4, s. 215-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nitrogen deposition and intentional forest fertilisation with nitrogen are known to affect the species composition of ectomycorrhizal fungal communities. To learn more about the mechanisms responsible for these effects, the relations between fungal growth, nitrogen uptake and nitrogen availability were studied in ectomycorrhizal fungi in axenic cultures and in symbiosis with pine seedlings. Effects of different levels of inorganic nitrogen (NH4) on the mycelial growth of four isolates of Paxillus involutus and two isolates of Suillus bovinus were assessed. With pine seedlings, fungal uptake of N-15-labelled NH4 was studied in shortterm incubation experiments (72 h) in microcosms and in long-term incubation experiments (3 months) in pot cultures. For P. involutus growing in symbiosis with pine seedlings, isolates with higher NH4 uptake were affected more negatively at high levels of nitrogen availability than isolates with lower uptake. More NH4 was allocated to shoots of seedlings colonised by a high-uptake isolate, indicating transfer of a larger fraction of assimilated NH4 to the host than with isolates showing lower NH4 uptake rates. Thus low rates of N uptake and N transfer to the host may enable EM fungi avoid stress induced by elevated levels of nitrogen. Seedlings colonised by S. bovinus transferred a larger fraction of the N-15 label to the shoots than seedlings colonised by P. involutus. Seedling shoot growth probably constituted a greater carbon sink in pot cultures than in microcosms, since the mycelial growth of P. involutus was more sensitive to high NH4 in pots. There was no homology in mycelial growth rate between pare culture and growth in symbiosis, but N uptake in pure culture corresponded to that during growth in symbiosis. No relationship was found between deposition of antropogenic nitrogen at the sites of origin of the P. involutus isolates and their mycelial growth or uptake of inorganic nitrogen
