  • Study of the response of the ATLAS central calorimeter to pions of energies from 3 to 9 GeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 607:2, s. 372-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. in this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4. • Magnetic and intruder rotational bands in In-113
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 72:4, s. 044304-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in In-113 were populated via the reactions Mo-100(O-18,p4n)In-113 and Pd-110(Li-7,4n)In-113. The two known Delta J=2 intruder bands, based on the pi g(7/2)circle times d(5/2) and pi h(11/2) orbitals, have been extended by 8h to spins (49/2(+))h and (55/2(-))h, respectively. The previous finding of three sequences of Delta J=1 gamma-ray transitions has been confirmed. A self-consistent cranked shell-model calculation gives a good description of the contrasting alignment patterns of the two Delta J=2 intruder bands. The intruder bands, the known sequences of M1 transitions, and spherical levels together represent a coexistence of three different excitation modes in this nucleus.

  • Resistive wall mode feedback control experiments in EXTRAP T2R
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 34th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics 2007, EPS 2007 - Europhysics Conference Abstracts. - 9781622763344 ; , s. 544-547
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments in EXTRAP T2R on RWM stabilization using intelligent shell feedback with a P-controller showed that mode suppression improves with increasing gain up to the system stability limit. A PD-controller gives faster response and allows operation with higher gain. The PI-controller is useful for suppression of modes driven by external resonant field error. Best mode suppression was in the present study achieved with a PID-controller.

  • Association studies of BMI and type 2 diabetes in the neuropeptide y pathway - A possible role for NPY2R as a candidate gene for type 2 diabetes in men
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 1939-327X .- 0012-1797. ; 56:5, s. 1460-1467
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neuropeptide Y (NPY) family of peptides and receptors regulate food intake. Inherited variation in this pathway could influence susceptibility to obesity and its complications, including type 2 diabetes. We genotyped a set of 71 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that capture the most common variation in NPY, PPY, PYY, NPY1R, NPY2R, and NPY5R in 2,800 individuals of recent European ancestry drawn from the near extremes of BMI distribution. Five SNPs located upstream of NPY2R were nominally associated with BMI in men (P values = 0.001-0.009, odds ratios [ORs] 1.27-1.34). No association with BMI was observed in women, and no consistent associations were observed for other genes in this pathway. We attempted to replicate the association with BMI in 2,500 men and tested these SNPs for association with type 2 diabetes in 8,000 samples. We observed association with BMI in men in only one replica- tion sample and saw no association in the combined replication samples (P = 0.154, OR = 1.09). Finally, a 9% haplotype was associated with type 2 diabetes in men (P = 1.73 x 10(-4), OR = 1.36) and not in women. Variation in this pathway likely does not have a major influence on BMI, although small effects cannot be ruled out; NPY2R should be considered a candidate gene for type 2 diabetes in men.

  • Reversed-Field Pinch Contributions to Resistive Wall Mode Physics and Control
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal feedback control of resistive-wall modes (RWM) is of common interest for toroidal fusionconcepts that use conducting walls for stabilization of ideal MHD modes. From the RWM control point of view, the RFP situation is in many respects similar to the advanced tokamak situation in the presence of very lowplasma rotation, where the most effective stabilizing mechanism is the feedback action of a set of active coils. Results from EXTRAP T2R (Sweden) and RFX-mod (Italy) RFP experiments have shown that full feedbackcontrol of multiple RWMs is possible and their deleterious effects can be completely suppressed. However it isnow important to optimize the RWM control systems both for the RFP and tokamak configuration for futureimplementation. Important aspects of optimization are effective mode identification and tracking capability, avoidance of the harmful effects of sideband modes (aliasing) in the control spectrum, minimized powerrequirements and robust controller stability. The paper describes collaborative work carried out on the two RFPexperiments. Controller models based on the mode harmonic control concept and on a state-space multipleinputmultiple-output intelligent shell concept are studied. Progress in development of optimal control schemesare presented both through experimental studies and simulations.
