  • Toward Rare-Earth-Free Permanent Magnets : A Combinatorial Approach Exploiting the Possibilities of Modeling, Shape Anisotropy in Elongated Nanoparticles, and Combinatorial Thin-Film Approach
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: JOM. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1047-4838 .- 1543-1851. ; 67:6, s. 1318-1328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of the rare-earth free permanent magnets (REFREEPM) project is to develop a new generation of high-performance permanent magnets (PMs) without rare earths. Our approach is based on modeling using a combinatorial approach together with micromagnetic modeling and the realization of the modeled systems (I) by using a novel production of high-aspect-ratio (> 5) nanostructrures (nanowires, nanorods, and nanoflakes) by exploiting the magnetic shape anisotropy of the constituents that can be produced via chemical nanosynthesis polyol process or electrodeposition, which can be consolidated with novel processes for a new generation of rare-earth free PMs with energy product in the range of 60 kJ/m(3) < (BH)max < 160 kJ/m(3) at room temperature, and (II) by using a high-throughput thin-film synthesis and high-throughput characterization approach to identify promising candidate materials that can be stabilized in a tetragonal or hexagonal structure by epitaxial growth on selected substrates, under various conditions of pressure, stoichiometry, and temperature. In this article, we report the progress so far in selected phases.

  • Increased magnetocrystalline anisotropy in epitaxial Fe-Co-C thin films with spontaneous strain
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 116:21, s. 213901-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Rare earth free alloys are in focus of permanent magnet research since the accessibility of the elements needed for nowadays conventional magnets is limited. Tetragonally strained iron-cobalt (Fe-Co) has attracted large interest as promising candidate due to theoretical calculations. In experiments, however, the applied strain quickly relaxes with increasing film thickness and hampers stabilization of a strong magnetocrys- talline anisotropy. In our study we show that already 2 at% of carbon substantially reduce the lattice relaxation leading to the formation of a spontaneously strained phase with 3% tetragonal distortion. In these strained (Fe0.4Co0.6)0.98C0.02 films, a magnetocrystalline anisotropy above 0.4 MJ/m3 is observed while the large polarization of 2.1 T is maintained. Compared to binary Fe-Co this is a remarkable improve- ment of the intrinsic magnetic properties. In this paper, we relate our experimental work to theoretical studies of strained Fe-Co-C and find a very good agreement.

  • Enhanced spin-orbit coupling in tetragonally strained Fe-Co-B films
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 29:27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tetragonally strained interstitial Fe-Co-B alloys were synthesized as epitaxial films grown on a 20 nm thick Au0.55Cu0.45 buffer layer. Different ratios of the perpendicular to in-plane lattice constant c/a = 1.013, 1.034 and 1.02 were stabilized by adding interstitial boron with different concentrations 0, 4, and 10 at.%, respectively. Using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) we found that the total orbital magnetic moment significantly increases with increasing c/a ratio, indicating that reduced crystal symmetry and interstitial B leads to a noticeable enhancement of the effect of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the Fe-Co-B alloys. First-principles calculations reveal that the increase in orbital magnetic moment mainly originates from B impurities in octahedral position and the reduced symmetry around B atoms. These findings offer the possibility to enhance SOC phenomena - namely the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the orbital moment - by stabilizing anisotropic strain by doping 4 at.% B. Results on the influence of B doping on the Fe-Co film microstructure, their coercive field and magnetic relaxation are also presented.

  • Melody Beyond Notes : A Study of Melody Cognition
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Abstract Melody beyond notes - a study of melody cognition Keywords: Melody, Cognition, Melodic segmentation, Melodic Parallelism, Pitch Structure,Meter, Rhythm, Grouping, Swedish Folk Music, Music Theory, Computer-aided analysis This thesis is a music theoretical approach to cognition of surface structure in monophonic melodies. It can briefly be described as a study into what extent we may acquire a common experience of melodic structure, such as phrase structure, only from listening to a melody. More precisely, this work concerns the question as to whether a cognitively based method of analysis can provide analyses of melodic surface structures in different styles thatwill concur with listeners’ conceptions better than chance. In order to investigate this question a general model of melody cognition wasdeveloped, relying primarily on a few general cognitive principles. The model was designed to be general in the sense that it should apply to any style for which the concept of melody is relevant. This model provided the framework for a computer-aided method of analysis, which performs analysis of different aspects of melodic surface structure based on information of relative pitch and temporal information only. These aspects involve: Categorical perception of pitch and duration at basic levels, such as context-sensitive quantization and melodic pitch categorization; Analysis of metrical and non-metrical temporal structures, e,g. heterometric structures; phrase and section structure, including analysis of structural implications of melodic similarity, structural hierarchy and symmetry. This development has required new theoretical concepts and methods to be created, e.g. regarding the relationship between rhythm and meter, some of which are presented for the first time is this thesis. In order to evaluate the performance of the model a series of listener tests were performed, which together with corpuses of musical notations from different styles, constituted the reference material of the study. This material has included Scandinavian folk music styles and Western classical music, but also examples of Eastern European folk music, Middle East and Indian Classical music, Jazz and Western popular song. The results of these tests indicated that melody can be conceived differently by people even within a limited cultural sphere. But the results also suggested that this variability is possible to model by a rule-based method of analysis, since the predictions given by the model generally were well above chance level. It is herein suggested that variability in grouping conception to a considerable degree can be accounted for in terms of start- and end-oriented grouping preference. Moreover, the results also indicate that important aspects of even culturally foreign music can be conveyed, also in limited melodic stimuli.Generally, the results support the assumption of a general cognitive framework for melodic surface structure. This might be interpreted as to indicate that, metaphorically speaking; melody may indeed be a universal ‘language’, but one which we all understand in our own way.

    • The synthesis of a novel ligand 2′-[1-(2-pyridinyl)-ethylidene]-oxamohydrazide (Hapsox), from a series of 2-acetylpyridine acylhydrazones, and its complex with Co(III), which is the first in this series of complexes are described. Both the ligand and the complex were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectra, and the structure of the complex [Co(apsox)2]ClO4 was determined by X-ray structural analysis. It was established that [Co(apsox)2]ClO4 has an octahedral geometry with two tridentate apsox ligands in monoanionic form. Structural characteristics, lengths of the bonds, and angles between the bonds were typical for Co(III) complexes of distorted octahedral geometry. Both direct and template synthesis afforded the same geometrical isomer of the complex with two apsox ligands meridionally bound to the central metal ion, even in the case when equimolar quantities of Co(ClO4)2 and Hapsox were applied.

  • The major bactericidal activity of human seminal plasma is zinc-dependent and derived from fragmentation of the semenogelins.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of immunology. - 1550-6606. ; 181:5, s. 3413-3421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the major roles of seminal plasma is to provide antimicrobial protection for the spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract. We found that the bactericidal activity of seminal plasma was highest after resolution of the seminal clot and that this antibacterial activity subsequently became greatly diminished. The antibacterial activity was derived from peptides generated by fragmentation of the semenogelins while the semenogelin holoproteins displayed no antibacterial activity. After ejaculation the semenogelin-derived peptides were fragmented to smaller and smaller fragments over time and thereby lost antibacterial activity. This paralleled the loss of antibacterial activity of whole seminal plasma both in vitro and after sexual intercourse. Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the semenogelin-derived peptides generated in seminal plasma was strictly zinc-dependent both at neutral and low pH. These data provide novel roles for the resolution of seminal clots and for the high zinc concentration in human seminal plasma.

  • A bottom-up strategy for establishment of EER in three Nordic countries – the role of networks
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Engineering Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0304-3797 .- 1469-5898. ; 43:2, s. 219-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the emergence of an engineering education research (EER) community in three Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland and Sweden. First, an overview of the current state of Nordic EER authorship is produced through statistics on international publication. Then, the history of EER and its precursor activities is described in three national narratives. These national storylines are tied together in a description of recent networking activities, aiming to strengthen the EER communities on the Nordic level. Taking these three perspectives together, and drawing on concepts from community of practice theory, network theory and learning network theory, we discuss factors behind the differences in the countries, and draw some conclusions about implications for networking activities in a heterogeneous community. Further, we discuss the role of networks for affording a joint identity.

    • Universities are seeking novel ways to strengthen the collective educational competence of their faculty and promote educational merits. In this paper we describe and compare the experiences of two recently started initiatives for teaching excellence, the Program for Future Leaders for Strategic Educational Development at KTH Royal Institute of Technology (henceforth KTH) and the Teaching Fellowship Programme at the University of Twente. Both programs have recently completed one complete round of implementation. The programmes are similar in that the participants work on a project of their own for an extended time, while also being part of a community with regular meetings and supported by coaches. The main differences are the programme duration, number of participants, and whether the projects are in a specific theme or wholly formulated by the participants. In this study, both programs are evaluated using similar themes. We analyse this data, and reflect on the context, conditions and design of the programs and our lessons learned from these first experiences.

  • Antidepressants and survival in glioma : a registry-based retrospective cohort study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Neuro-Oncology Practice. - : Oxford University Press. - 2054-2577 .- 2054-2585. ; 11:2, s. 125-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Depression and treatment with antidepressant medication is common in patients with malignant glioma. However, the extent to which antidepressants may affect the disease is not fully understood. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate possible associations between treatment with antidepressant medication and survival in glioma patients. Methods: We performed a registry-based cohort study including 1231 patients with malignant glioma (WHO grade 2, 3 and 4) having undergone surgery, and 6400 matched controls without glioma. All data was extracted from the RISK North database, which contains information from multiple national population-based registries in Sweden. Results: Treatment with antidepressants is more common in patients with malignant glioma (27%), compared to controls (16%), p<.001. Treatment with antidepressants after surgery for glioma was significantly associated with poorer survival. These effects were observed both for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and non-SSRIs. In grade 4 glioma, SSRI treatment was associated with a HR of 3.32 (95% CI 2.69–4.10, p<.001), and non-SSRI treatment a HR of 3.54 (95% CI 2.52–4.99, p<.001), compared to glioma patients without antidepressants. In grade 2-3 glioma, the HR for SSRI treatment was 3.26 (95% CI 2.19–4.85, p<.001), and for non-SSRI treatment 7.71 (95% CI 4.22-14.12, p<.001).Conclusions: Our results demonstrate a negative association between antidepressant medication and survival in glioma. Further research will be needed to clarify causation.

  • High mortaility in bacteraemia and candidaemia in critically ill patients - report from Swedish Intensive Care Registry
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. ; , s. P1060-
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objective: Increasing prevalence of  bacteremia and candidemia with significant resistance to antimicrobial agents is an increasing concern among ICU patients. The objective of this report from Swedish Registry of Intensive care (SIR) was to study the frequency and cause of culture verified sepsis in critically ill patients and to analyse mortality in sepsis caused by Candida albicans, Candida non albicans and bacteria. Methods: Setting: Starting 10 years ago an increasing number of ICU:s in Sweden reports each episode of care (EOC) to the Swedish Intensive care Registry (SIR).  Mortality is followed weekly for all patients by link to the Swedish population registry. A specific routine for collection of microbial data directly from the laboratories connected individually to each EOC has been tested and implemented for laboratories covering 1/3 of the Swedish population. Participants: 47 ICU:s reported 1540 EOC:s during the period January 2005 to November 2011, with a diagnosis of sepsis (ICD10: A419, R572 or R651) and a positive blood culture within 14 days before admission until discharge.  For patients with more than one EOC was only the last EOC included which reduced the number of observations included in mortality calculations to 1416.Variables: Primary outcome was 30 day mortality calculated from admission to ICU.Results: 1 416 patients met inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. The most common causes of sepsis were:  E. coli (24 %) followed by Coagulase Negative Staphylococci (CoNS) (21 %), Streptococcus spp (19 %), S. aureus (14 %), Klebsiella spp (8 %) and Candida spp (6 %) [Candida albicans 4 % and Candida non albicans 2 %]. The 30-days crude mortality was 34% for patients with sepsis caused by S. aureus. Correspondingly 30 days mortality was for  Candida non albicans 34%, Candida albicans 31%,  Klebsiella spp 26 % , CoNS 25 %, E. coli 22 %. Distribution of species in blood cultures from the 87 patients with candidemia were: C. albicans 62, C. glabrata 11, C. krusei 1, C. tropicalis 4, C. other 4, C. non specified 9.Conclusion: The highest (>30%) crude mortality in critically ill patients with sepsis was seen in patients with S. aureus and Candida infections. Further analysis of independent risk factors for mortality in sepsis caused by different pathogens are warranted.

    • The behaviour of electrodes based on Sn2P2O7 and Sn2BPO6 glasses during cycling were characterized with diffuse IR reflectance. By removing the electrodes from the half-cells at different stages of the electrochemical cycling it was possible to follow the development of the glass structures during lithium insertion and extraction. It was found that the local network structure around the phosphate groups in the glass experience structural changes by the lithium insertion. These changes are not fully recovered by lithium extraction during the first cycle and are likely related to the initial irreversible loss of capacitance of the electrodes.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics and Chemistry of Solids. - 0022-3697. ; 62, s. 1213-1218.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of lithium insertion for two Sn-based composite oxide glasses, Sn2BPO6 and Sn2P2O7, was examined during the first electrochemical discharge/charge cycle. Electrodes based on these glasses were analysed with micro-Raman spectroscopy at different steps during the cycle. In-situ X-ray diffraction has been used to confirm the amorphous state during the lithium insertion and extraction process. No alloy formation between Li and Sn could be discerned throughout the first cycle. It was found that when lithium enters the electrode, a reaction at the surface of the glass particles takes place resulting in Li3PO4, Li2O and SnO2 formation. The charge compensation mechanism is thought to be the reduction of Sn2+ to Sn. The formation of Li3PO4 is found to be irreversible and is as such partly responsible for the large observed capacity loss during the first cycle.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clinical reasoning is a complex and crucial ability health professions students need to acquire during their education. Despite its importance, explicit clinical reasoning teaching is not yet implemented in most health professions educational programs. Therefore, we carried out an international and interprofessional project to plan and develop a clinical reasoning curriculum with a train-the-trainer course to support educators in teaching this curriculum to students. We developed a framework and curricular blueprint. Then we created 25 student and 7 train-the-trainer learning units and we piloted 11 of these learning units at our institutions. Learners and faculty reported high satisfaction and they also provided helpful suggestions for improvements. One of the main challenges we faced was the heterogeneous understanding of clinical reasoning within and across professions. However, we learned from each other while discussing these different views and perspectives on clinical reasoning and were able to come to a shared understanding as the basis for developing the curriculum. Our curriculum fills an important gap in the availability of explicit clinical reasoning educational materials both for students and faculty and is unique with having specialists from different countries, schools, and professions. Faculty time and time for teaching clinical reasoning in existing curricula remain important barriers for implementation of clinical reasoning teaching.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nutrition Experimental. - : Elsevier. - 2352-9393. ; 29, s. 18-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background & aim: Swallowing disturbances are associated with older age as well as with other subclinical disturbances of multifactorial origin in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). This study assesses nutritional markers and whole-body impedance data to better understand swallowing disturbances in Parkinson's disease.Design and patients included: This cross-sectional study includes baseline data from a cohort of newly diagnosed patients identified in the New Parkinsonism in Umeå study (NYPUM) (n = 75).Methods: Swallowing disturbance was registered as a score of one or more on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) section II question number 7 on swallowing. The analysis used nutritional markers in plasma and anthropometry from bioimpedance. Results: Bivariate analysis revealed that swallowing disturbances were associated with low plasma phosphate levels for males (r = −0.428; p = 0.005) and for all patients with PD (r = −0.241; p = 0.037). In males but not in females, a negative association was found between age and albumin and amount of intra-cellular water (ICW, l). Plasma albumin was associated with plasma phosphate (r = 0.315; p = 0.006; n = 75, r = 0.361; p = 0.036; n = 34, r = 0.310; p = 0.049; n = 41). Another risk pattern indicating swallowing disturbance in females was revealed by an association with visceral adiposity index (VAI), plasma triglycerides (TG), and triglyceride/high density lipoprotein (TG/HDL) ratio. The adjusted logistic regression revealed that low phosphate in males and low magnesium in females were risk factors for swallowing disturbance. Conclusion: The age-related decline in plasma phosphate in males with PD may be an important nutritional marker for swallowing disturbances. Body composition measurements and nutritional markers provide information for the study of swallowing dysfunction as part of sarcopenia.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrochemical reactions of Li with Mn2Sb and small amounts of MnSb have been investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The lithiation transforms initially the MnSb part and later the Mn2Sb part into amorphous LiMnSb. On further lithiation the LiMnSb phase transforms to rather well crystallized Li3Sb. In the X-ray diffraction pattern for the fully lithiated sample extruded nanocrystalline Mn is seen for the first time in these type of electrodes. The first delithiation of Li3Sb results in a mixture of three phases Mn2Sb, MnSb and LiMnSb. After several cycles (charges and discharges) of the electrode the Mn2Sb phase disappears completely.

  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is a major health threat listed among the top 10 causes of death worldwide. Treatment of multidrug-resistant Mtb requires use of additional second-line drugs that prolong the treatment process and result in higher death rates. Our team previously identified a 2-pyridone molecule (C10) that blocks tolerance to the first-line drug isoniazid at C10 concentrations that do not inhibit bacterial growth. Here, we discovered that the genes rv3160c and rv3161c are highly induced by C10, which led us to investigate them as potential targets. We show that Rv3160c acts as a TetR-like transcriptional repressor binding to a palindromic sequence located in the rv3161c promoter. We also demonstrate that C10 interacts with Rv3160c, inhibiting its binding to DNA. We deleted the rv3161c gene, coding for a putative oxygenase, to investigate its role in drug and stress sensitivity as well as C10 activity. This Δrv3161c strain was more tolerant to isoniazid and lysozyme than wild type Mtb. However, this tolerance could still be blocked by C10, suggesting that C10 functions independently of Rv3161c to influence isoniazid and lysozyme sensitivity.

  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Cell and Tissue Research. - : Springer. - 0302-766X .- 1432-0878. ; 261:1, s. 25-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sections of human skin were processed according to the indirect immunofluorescence technique with a rabbit antiserum against human protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5). Immunoreactivity was detected in intraepidermal and dermal nerve fibres and cells. The intraepidermal nerves were varicose or smooth with different diameters, running as single processes or branched, straight or bent, projecting in various directions and terminating in the stratum basale, spinosum or granulosum. The density of the intraepidermal nerves varied between the different skin areas investigated. PGP 9.5-containing axons of the lower dermis were found in large bundles. They separated into smaller axon bundles within the upper dermis, entering this portion of the skin perpendicular to the surface. Then they branched into fibres mainly arranged parallel to the epidermal-dermal junctional zone. However, the fibres en route to the epidermis traversed the upper dermis more or less perpendicularly. Furthermore, immunoreactive dermal nerve fibres were found in the Meissner corpuscles, the arrector pili muscles, hair follicles, around the eccrine and apocrine sweat glands and around certain blood vessels. Such fibres were also observed around most subcutaneous blood vessels, sometimes heavily innervating these structures. Numerous weakly-to-strongly PGP 9.5-immunoreactive cells were found both in the epidermis and in the dermis.

  • Compatibility of microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition manufactured Si/C electrodes with new LiTDI-based electrolytes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Solid State Ionics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-2738 .- 1872-7689. ; 286, s. 90-95

    • A synthesis of new types of Si/C composite anodes for lithium -ion batteries is reported. Thin layers of graphitic carbon decorated in 3D with Si nanoparticles were produced from liquid organic precursors-1-phenyl-2trimethylsilylacetylene and triethoxy(octyl)silane, using a one-step microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) method. Thin-film Si/C electrodes were electrochemically tested in lithium half cells and produced a good reversible capacity of up to 900 mAh g-1 (after 100 cycles) and -370 mAh g(-1), depending on the precursor type. The electrode easily endured 100 cycles at 1C rate with only a 10% loss in capacity.

  • A Huntington disease-like neurodegenerative disorder maps to chromosome 20p.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 63:5, s. 1431-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disturbance, cognitive loss, and psychiatric manifestations. The disease is associated with a CAG trinucleotide-repeat expansion in the Huntington gene (IT15) on chromosome 4p16.3. One family with a history of HD was referred to us initially for predictive testing using linkage analysis. However, the chromosome 4p region was completely excluded by polymorphic markers, and later no CAG-repeat expansion in the HD gene was detected. To map the disease trait segregating in this family, whole-genome screening with highly polymorphic dinucleotide-, trinucleotide-, and tetranucleotide-repeat DNA markers was performed. A positive LOD score of 3.01 was obtained for the marker D20S482 on chromosome 20p, by two-point LOD-score analysis with the MLINK program. Haplotype analysis indicated that the gene responsible for the disease is likely located in a 2.7-cM region between the markers D20S193 and D20S895. Candidate genes from the mapping region were screened for mutations.
