  • Att förklara samhället
  • 1997
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Effects of total parenteral nutrition on lipid metabolism in rats
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: JPEN. - : Wiley. - 0148-6071. ; 18:6, s. 503-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The pathophysiologic mechanisms behind the development of liver steatosis during total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and the possible relationship to alterations of lipoprotein lipase activities in different tissues are not fully known. It is also unknown whether continuous and discontinuous administration of TPN affect lipid metabolism differently. METHODS: TPN, including 8.4 g of triglycerides per kilogram per day, was given for 10 days to two groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats that received the infusions discontinuously and continuously, respectively. Freely fed rats were used as controls. RESULTS: TPN led to hyperlipidemia and accumulation of triglycerides in the liver. High-density lipoproteins were enriched in triglycerides, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and phospholipid levels were low. The activities of hepatic lipase were markedly decreased, and lipoprotein lipase activities in adipose tissue and in cardiac muscle were both up-regulated. The increased levels of cholesterol and phospholipids in the serum of TPN animals were more pronounced after discontinuous administration. CONCLUSIONS: TPN including lipids interferes with the normal regulation of lipid metabolism. Although the mechanisms remain obscure, the elevation of lipoprotein lipase activities seems functionally important to accommodate the increased input of triglycerides during TPN. Possibly, the observed alterations in lipase activities may be attributed to a state of hypothyroidism.

  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 35:3-4, s. 143-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • TV-journalism of attractionThe contemporary media society is characterized by an overabundance of information, messages and images, but a shortage of attention. The competition for the attention of potential audiences, and the problem of audience appeal, has become an increasingly important aspect of journalism and media production. Journalism that does not succeed in this competition is a dead journalism. This article presents a conceptual framework for studies of TV journalism as communication, including different intentions, strategies applied to appeal to viewers, processes of production, bases for audience involvement, roles and relations. I differentiate three modes of communication: information, story-telling and attractions. The article devotes most attention to the concept of attraction as it is the most theoretically innovative of the three. The concept TV journalism of attraction is introduced and elaborated as an important concept in media and journalism studies.

  • Sociologiska förklaringar och variabelanalysens gränser. En kritisk analys med exempel från medicinsk sociologi
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 30:2, s. 26-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sociological explanation and the limits of variable analysis. A critical analysis with examples from medical sociologyIn this article there is presented a critical analysis of variable-oriented methodology and its possibilities of generating sociological explanations, this with concrete examples from medical sociology. Three types of causal explanations are identified: (1) causality as quantitative distributions, (2) causality as substantial and contextual relations and processes, and (3) causality as abstract properties and mechanisms. These types of causality correspond to different dimensions of the object of sociology. The article brings into focus the limited possibilities of variable analysis when it comes to: (1) bridging the often large gap between abstract structures and contextual observable actions and conditions, (2) paying regard to the contextual constitution of social properties, (3) providing new knowledge concerning the substantive content of causal relations and processes, (4) creating quasiexperimental closures anchored in the open and complex social reality, and (5) providing knowledge of internal relations and of dynamic and creative processes.

  • Oxidation Behaviour and Mechanical Properties of β- and Mixed α-β Sialons Sintered with Additions of Y2O3 and Nd2O3
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 11:4, s. 363-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sialon ceramics have been prepared from two different Si3N4 powders obtained from different commercial sources, using Y2O3 and/or Nd2O3 as sintering aid. Although both powders were high-purity and high-quality silicon nitrides, surprisingly different phase compositions were obtained for the same overall starting compositions upon sintering at 1825°C. The phase compositions, densities, microstructures and mechanical properties of the samples obtained from the two powders have been compared. The samples prepared from one of the powders were oxidized at 1350°C for 20 h in dry oxygen in a TG unit. The oxidation curves obtained have been interpreted within the framework of a new rate law. The new rate law covers the observation that the oxidation behaviour of Si3N4-based ceramics is often non-parabolic, probably as a result of crystallization processes and the formation of cracks and/or bubbles within the oxide scale or at the scale/matrix interface during oxidation.
