  • ALLBATROS advanced long life blade turbine coating systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Applied Thermal Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-4311 .- 1873-5606. ; 24:11-12, s. 1745-1753
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scientific and technological objectives of this program are to increase the efficiency, reliability and maintainability of industrial gas turbine blades and vanes by• developing coatings that can warrant a 50 000 h life, i.e. twice that of the usual life, of the hot components (800–1100 °C) even with the use of renewable fuels such as biomass gas or recovery incinerator gas i.e. low-grade fuels with high pollutant levels,• characterising advanced existing coatings to assess lifetime and performance of coatings and coated materials,• providing material coating data and design criteria to use coating as a design element,• increasing the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of coated materials, their degradation, fracture mechanisms and engineering because of the strong need for a mechanism-based modelling of durability. These programmes permitted the selection of two reference coatings and the development of two innovative coatings. Concurrently work has been done in order to develop corrosion, oxidation and thermo-mechanical property models. Correlations between coatings development, experimental results and calculations will be discussed.

  • Signal amplification using "spot on-a-chip" technology for the identification of proteins via MALDI-TOF MS
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-6882 .- 0003-2700. ; 73:2, s. 214-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The presented "spot-on-a-chip" technology enables easy enrichment of samples in the low nanomolar (1-5 nM) range and provides a fast and reliable automated sample preparation method for performing matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis with high sensitivity and throughput. Through microdispensing, which allows accurate deposition of 60-pL droplets, dilute samples were enriched by making multiple droplet depositions in nanovials. The sample was confined to a defined spot area (300 x 300 mum), and multiple depositions increase the surface density of analyte in the nanovial, thereby providing detection of low attomole levels. The impact of the nanovial geometry with respect to the MALDI-TOF MS resolution for peptides deposited in the microfabricated silicon vials was investigated and the optimal geometry and size were determined. The spot-on-a-chip technology, that is, the combination of microdispensing, micromachined silicon nanovials and on-spot enrichment provides a signal amplification of at least 10-50 times as compared to an ordinary sample preparation. The linearity of the enrichment effect is shown by the analysis of a peptide mixture at the 5 nM level. The signal amplification provided by the spot-on-a-chip enrichment is demonstrated by the analysis of relevant biological samples, interleukin-8 from a spiked cell supernatant, and by successful protein identification of an excised spot from a high-sensitivity silver-stained two-dimensional electrophoresis gel separation.

  • Three Dimensional Simulation of Robot path, Heat Transfer and Residual Stresses of a TIG-welded Part with Complex Geometry
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Trends in Welding Research: Proceedings of the 6th International Conference. ; , s. 973-978
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper a system is presented that combines a robot off-line programming software with a finite element model that predicts temperature-time histories and residual stress distributions. The objective is to develop a tool for the engineer where robot trajectories and welding process parameters can be optimized on parts with complex geometry. The system was evaluated on a stainless steel gas turbine component. Robot weld paths were defined off-line and automatically downloaded to the finite element program, where transient temperatures and residual stresses were predicted. Temperature dependent properties and phase change, were included in the analysis. Assumptions and principles behind the modeling techniques are presented together with predicted temperature histories, residual stresses, and fixture forces.

  • Neutron Emission from Beam-Injected Fast Tritons in JET Plasmas with Reversed or Monotonic Magnetic Shear.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 31st EPS Conference on Plasma Physics. ; , s. 4-
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The neutron emission from fast tritons in plasmas with different magnetic shearconfigurations has been investigated in a dedicated experiment on JET. Short pulses ofneutral beam injection were used to deposit fast tritons in deuterium plasmas. By comparingthe measured neutron yield with predictions based on DT reaction calculations, fast tritonlosses can be assessed. The latter are expected to be very low according to neoclassicalpredictions based on Fokker-Planck simulation [1]. Much larger “anomalous” beam-ionlosses (up to 40%) have been reported in TFTR experiments for plasma conditions withreversed magnetic shear [2]. The TFTR experiments indicated an excess DT rate in thesimulation and, to a lesser extent, in the DD rate and plasma stored energy. This wasinterpreted as anomalous beam-ion loss associated with reverse shear due to an unidentifiedloss mechanism. Evidence of a similar effect was searched for in the JET experimentsreported in this paper.

  • Reducing intracranial pressure may increase survival among patients with bacterial meningitis
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Clinical Infectious Diseases. - Chicago : Univ. of Chicago Press. - 1058-4838 .- 1537-6591. ; 38:3, s. 384-390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We reported findings concerning continuous intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) measurements and mortality in patients with severe bacterial meningitis treated on the basis of an ICP-targeted approach. Eighteen patients with severe bacterial meningitis were admitted for neurointensive care at Umeå University Hospital (Umeå, Sweden). In 15 patients, ICP was measured continuously through an ICP measuring device. During care, all patients but one developed intracranial hypertension with an ICP of ⩾15 mm Hg (14 [93%] of 15 patients). Ten (67%) of 15 patients survived and were discharged, and 5 patients (33%) died. Mean ICP was significantly higher and CPP was markedly decreased in nonsurvivors, compared with survivors. Among the survivors, ICP was gradually reduced. Treatment of patients with severe bacterial meningitis should include neurointensive care and continuous ICP measurement. Increased ICP may be reduced by using the ICP-targeted therapy that closely resembles the “Lund concept.”

  • A p50-like Y-box protein with a putative translational role becomes associated with pre-mRNA concomitant with transcription
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cell Science. - : The Company of Biologists. - 0021-9533 .- 1477-9137. ; 116:8, s. 1493-1503
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In vertebrates free messenger ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles and polysomes contain an abundant Y-box protein called p50 (YB-1), which regulates translation, presumably by affecting the packaging of the RNA. Here, we have identified a p50-like protein in the dipteran Chironomus tentans and studied its relation with the biogenesis of mRNA in larval salivary glands. The salivary gland cells contain polytene chromosomes with the transcriptionally active regions blown up as puffs. A few giant puffs, called Balbiani rings (BRs), generate a transcription product, a large RNP particle, which can be visualised (with the electron microscope) during its assembly on the gene and during its transport to and through the nuclear pores. The p50-like protein studied, designated Ct-p40/50 (or p40/50 for short), was shown to contain a central cold-shock domain, an alanine- and proline-rich N-terminal domain, and a C-terminal domain with alternating acidic and basic regions, an organisation that is characteristic of p50 (YB-1). The p40/50 protein appears in two isoforms, p40 and p50, which contain 264 and 317 amino acids, respectively. The two isoforms share the first 258 amino acids and thus differ in amino-acid sequence only in the region close to the C-terminus. When a polyclonal antibody was raised against p40/50, western blot analysis and immunocytology showed that p40/50 is not only abundant in the cytoplasm but is also present in the nucleus. Immunolabelling of isolated polytene chromosomes showed that p40/50 appears in transcriptionally active regions, including the BRs. Using immunoelectron microscopy we revealed that p40/50 is added along the nascent transcripts and is also present in the released BR RNP particles in the nucleoplasm. Finally, by UV crosslinking in vivo we showed that p40/50 is bound to both nuclear and cytoplasmic poly(A) RNA. We conclude that p40/50 is being added cotranscriptionally along the growing BR pre-mRNA, is released with the processed mRNA into the nucleoplasm and probably remains associated with the mRNA both during nucleocytoplasmic transport and protein synthesis. Given that the p40/p50 protein, presumably with a role in translation, is loaded onto the primary transcript concomitant with transcription, an early programming of the cytoplasmic fate of mRNA is indicated.

  • Relation between geometric phases of entangled bi-partitesystems and their subsystems
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 68, s. 022106-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the geometric phase of entangled states of bi-partite systems under bi-local unitary evolution. We investigate the relation between the geometric phase of the system and those of the subsystems. It is shown that (1) the geometric phase of cyclic entangled states with non-degenerate eigenvalues can always be decomposed into a sum of weighted non-modular pure state phases pertaining to the separable components of the Schmidt decomposition, though the same cannot be said in the non-cyclic case, and (2) the geometric phase of the mixed state of one subsystem is generally different from that of the entangled state even by keeping the other subsystem fixed, but the two phases are the same when the evolution operator satisfies conditions where each component in the Schmidt decomposition is parallel transported.

  • Quantifying multipartite entanglement
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Quantum communication, meaurement and computing. - : AIP. - 0735402167 ; , s. 241-244
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A natural way of quantifying the degree of entanglement for a pure quantum state is to compare how far this state is from the set of all unentangled pure states. This geometric measure of entanglement is explored for bipartite and multipartite pure and mixed states. It is determined analytically for arbitrary two-qubit mixed states and for generalized Werner and isotropic states. It is also applied to certain multipartite mixed states. including two multipartite bound entangeled states discovered by Smolin and Dur. Moreover, the geometric measure of entanglement is applied to the ground state of the Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. From this model the entanglement is shown to exhibit singular behavior at the quantum critical point.
