  • Overview of the JET results
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 51:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the last IAEA Conference JET has been in operation for one year with a programmatic focus on the qualification of ITER operating scenarios, the consolidation of ITER design choices and preparation for plasma operation with the ITER-like wall presently being installed in JET. Good progress has been achieved, including stationary ELMy H-mode operation at 4.5 MA. The high confinement hybrid scenario has been extended to high triangularity, lower ρ*and to pulse lengths comparable to the resistive time. The steady-state scenario has also been extended to lower ρ*and ν*and optimized to simultaneously achieve, under stationary conditions, ITER-like values of all other relevant normalized parameters. A dedicated helium campaign has allowed key aspects of plasma control and H-mode operation for the ITER non-activated phase to be evaluated. Effective sawtooth control by fast ions has been demonstrated with3He minority ICRH, a scenario with negligible minority current drive. Edge localized mode (ELM) control studies using external n = 1 and n = 2 perturbation fields have found a resonance effect in ELM frequency for specific q95values. Complete ELM suppression has, however, not been observed, even with an edge Chirikov parameter larger than 1. Pellet ELM pacing has been demonstrated and the minimum pellet size needed to trigger an ELM has been estimated. For both natural and mitigated ELMs a broadening of the divertor ELM-wetted area with increasing ELM size has been found. In disruption studies with massive gas injection up to 50% of the thermal energy could be radiated before, and 20% during, the thermal quench. Halo currents could be reduced by 60% and, using argon/deuterium and neon/deuterium gas mixtures, runaway electron generation could be avoided. Most objectives of the ITER-like ICRH antenna have been demonstrated; matching with closely packed straps, ELM resilience, scattering matrix arc detection and operation at high power density (6.2 MW m-2) and antenna strap voltages (42 kV). Coupling measurements are in very good agreement with TOPICA modelling. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

  • Overview of the JET results with the ITER-like wall
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 53:10, s. 104002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Z(eff) (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. The re-establishment of the baseline H-mode and hybrid scenarios compatible with the new wall has required an optimization of the control of metallic impurity sources and heat loads. Stable type-I ELMy H-mode regimes with H-98,H-y2 close to 1 and beta(N) similar to 1.6 have been achieved using gas injection. ELM frequency is a key factor for the control of the metallic impurity accumulation. Pedestal temperatures tend to be lower with the new wall, leading to reduced confinement, but nitrogen seeding restores high pedestal temperatures and confinement. Compared with the carbon wall, major disruptions with the new wall show a lower radiated power and a slower current quench. The higher heat loads on Be wall plasma-facing components due to lower radiation made the routine use of massive gas injection for disruption mitigation essential.

  • Biomechanical effects of environmental and engineered particles on human airway smooth muscle cells
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Royal Society Interface. - : The Royal Society. - 1742-5689 .- 1742-5662. ; 7:Suppl 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past decade has seen significant increases in combustion-generated ambient particles, which contain a nanosized fraction (less than 100 nm), and even greater increases have occurred in engineered nanoparticles (NPs) propelled by the booming nanotechnology industry. Although inhalation of these particulates has become a public health concern, human health effects and mechanisms of action for NPs are not well understood. Focusing on the human airway smooth muscle cell, here we show that the cellular mechanical function is altered by particulate exposure in a manner that is dependent upon particle material, size and dose. We used Alamar Blue assay to measure cell viability and optical magnetic twisting cytometry to measure cell stiffness and agonist-induced contractility. The eight particle species fell into four categories, based on their respective effect on cell viability and on mechanical function. Cell viability was impaired and cell contractility was decreased by (i) zinc oxide (40-100 nm and less than 44 mu m) and copper(II) oxide (less than 50 nm); cell contractility was decreased by (ii) fluorescent polystyrene spheres (40 nm), increased by (iii) welding fumes and unchanged by (iv) diesel exhaust particles, titanium dioxide (25 nm) and copper(II) oxide (less than 5 mu m), although in none of these cases was cell viability impaired. Treatment with hydrogen peroxide up to 500 mu M did not alter viability or cell mechanics, suggesting that the particle effects are unlikely to be mediated by particle-generated reactive oxygen species. Our results highlight the susceptibility of cellular mechanical function to particulate exposures and suggest that direct exposure of the airway smooth muscle cells to particulates may initiate or aggravate respiratory diseases.

  • Fusion Alpha-Particle Diagnostics for DT Experiments on the Joint European Torus
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: FUSION REACTOR DIAGNOSTICS. - : AIP Publishing LLC. ; , s. 87-92
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • JET equipped with ITER-like wall (a beryllium wall and a tungsten divertor) can provide auxiliary heating with power up to 35MW, producing a significant population of alpha-particles in DT operation. The direct measurements of alphas are very difficult and alpha-particle studies require a significant development of dedicated diagnostics. JET now has an excellent set of confined and lost fast particle diagnostics for measuring the alpha-particle source and its evolution in space and time, alpha-particle energy distribution, and alpha-particle losses. This paper describes how the above mentioned JET diagnostic systems could be used for alpha-particle measurements, and what options exist for keeping the essential alpha-particle diagnostics functioning well in the presence of intense DT neutron flux. Also, alpha-particle diagnostics for ITER are discussed.

  • High-resolution gamma ray spectroscopy measurements of the fast ion energy distribution in JET He-4 plasmas
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 52:6, s. 063009-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-resolution gamma-ray measurements were carried out on the Joint European Torus (JET) in an experiment aimed at accelerating He-4 ions in the MeV range by coupling third harmonic radio frequency heating to an injected He-4 beam. For the first time, Doppler broadening of gamma-ray peaks from the C-12(d, p gamma)C-13 and Be-9(alpha, n gamma)C-12 reactions was observed and interpreted with dedicated Monte Carlo codes based on the detailed nuclear physics of the processes. Information on the confined He-4 and deuteron energy distribution was inferred, and confined He-4 ions with energies as high as 6 MeV were assessed. A signature of MHD activity in gamma-ray traces was also detected. The reported results have a bearing on diagnostics for fast ions in the MeV range in next step fusion devices.

  • Systems of Imprimitivity for the Clifford Group
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Quantum information & computation. - : Rinton Press. - 1533-7146. ; 14:3-4, s. 339-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is known that if the dimension is a perfect square the Clifford group can be represented by monomial matrices. Another way of expressing this result is to say that when the dimension is a perfect square the standard representation of the Clifford group has a system of imprimitivity consisting of one dimensional subspaces. We generalize this result to the case of an arbitrary dimension. Let k be the square-free part of the dimension. Then we show that the standard representation of the Clifford group has a system of imprimitivity consisting of k-dimensional subspaces. To illustrate the use of this result we apply it to the calculation of SIC-POVMs (symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measures), constructing exact solutions in dimensions 8 (hand-calculation) as well as 12 and 28 (machine-calculation).

  • Thin YAP:Ce and LaBr3:Ce scintillators as proton detectors of a thin-film proton recoil neutron spectrometer for fusion and spallation sources applications
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 751, s. 19-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two thin inorganic scintillators based on YAP and LaBr3 crystals (1 in, diameter x 0.1 in, height) have been used for proton measurements at the Uppsala tandem accelerator in the energy range 4-8 MeV. Measurements show a comparable good energy resolution for the two detectors, better than 2% (FWHM) for 8 MeV protons, which compares to 3.8% (LaBr3) and 3.7% (YAP) obtained at the 1.3 MeV peak of a Co-60 gamma-ray source. The main advantages of these crystals are a fast scintillation time (less than 30 ns), an excellent light yield and the capability to operate in large neutron background, which make them ideal candidates as proton detectors of a thin-film proton recoil neutron spectrometer for application on fusion experiments and fast neutron spallation sources.

  • Finite Larmor radii effects in fast ion measurements as demonstrated using neutron emission spectrometry of JET plasmas heated with 3rd harmonic ICRF
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 38th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics 2011 (EPS 2011): Europhysics Conference Abstracts. - 2914771681
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper demonstrates how the finite Larmor radii (FLR) of fast ions can affect fast ion measurements by studying data from the neutron time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR. Neutron spectra were calculated from a model of the fast ion velocity distribution for a JET experiment with 3rd harmonic ICRF heating of deuterium beams. It was found that  FLR effects need to be considered to get a good description of the data,  if the Larmor radius of the fast ions are comparable to the width of the field of view of the instrument. This applies not only to results from neutron spectrometry but also to other types of fast ion diagnostics.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 55:1, s. 015008-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When analysing data from fast ion measurements it is normally assumed that the gyro-phase distribution of the ions is isotropic within the field of view of the measuring instrument. This assumption is not valid if the Larmor radii of the fast ions are comparable to—or larger than—the gradient scale length in the spatial distribution of the ions, and if this scale length is comparable to—or smaller than—the width of the field of view of the measuring instrument. In this paper the effect of such an anisotropy is demonstrated by analysing neutron emission spectrometry data from a JET experiment with deuterium neutral beams together with radiofrequency heating at the third harmonic of the deuterium cyclotron frequency. In the experiment, the neutron time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR was used to measure the neutrons from the d(d,n) 3 He-reaction. Comparison of the experimental data with Monte Carlo calculations shows that the finite Larmor radii of the fast ions need to be included in the modelling to get a good description of the data. Similar effects are likely to be important for other fast ion diagnostics, such as γ -ray spectroscopy and neutral particle analysis, as well.

  • Neutron spectrometry measurements of energetic deuterons in ICRF heated plasmas with the ITER-like wall at JET
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 41th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics 2014 (EPS 2014): Europhysics Conference Abstracts.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At JET, experiments have been conducted in order to optimize the performance of ion cyclotron radio-frequency (ICRF) heating in the presence of the newly installed ITER-like wall. The ICRF was tuned to the cyclotron frequency of minority hydrogen (H), which is also the 2nd harmonic of the cyclotron frequency of deuterium (D). The relative H concentration was varied from a few percent up to about 25 percent in a series of plasma discharges and the neutron time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR was used to measure the energy spectrum of neutrons from the D(D,n)3He reaction during these discharges. It could be seen that the signal from ICRF accelerated deuterons depended strongly on H concentration. This observation indicates that the ICRF power absorbed by D at the 2nd harmonic cyclotron resonance increases with decreasing H concentration. This is in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations obtained from the plasma wave equation solver TOMCAT.

  • Very large scale heterogeneous integration (VLSHI) and wafer-level vacuum packaging for infrared bolometer focal plane arrays
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Infrared physics & technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1350-4495 .- 1879-0275. ; 60, s. 251-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Imaging in the long wavelength infrared (LWIR) range from 8 to 14 μm is an extremely useful tool for non-contact measurement and imaging of temperature in many industrial, automotive and security applications. However, the cost of the infrared (IR) imaging components has to be significantly reduced to make IR imaging a viable technology for many cost-sensitive applications. This paper demonstrates new and improved fabrication and packaging technologies for next-generation IR imaging detectors based on uncooled IR bolometer focal plane arrays. The proposed technologies include very large scale heterogeneous integration for combining high-performance, SiGe quantum-well bolometers with electronic integrated read-out circuits and CMOS compatible wafer-level vacuum packing. The fabrication and characterization of bolometers with a pitch of 25 μm × 25 μm that are arranged on read-out-wafers in arrays with 320 × 240 pixels are presented. The bolometers contain a multi-layer quantum well SiGe thermistor with a temperature coefficient of resistance of -3.0%/K. The proposed CMOS compatible wafer-level vacuum packaging technology uses Cu-Sn solid-liquid interdiffusion (SLID) bonding. The presented technologies are suitable for implementation in cost-efficient fabless business models with the potential to bring about the cost reduction needed to enable low-cost IR imaging products for industrial, security and automotive applications.

  • Fast-ion distributions from third harmonic ICRF heating studied with neutron emission spectroscopy
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 53:11, s. 113009-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fast-ion distribution from third harmonic ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) heating on the Joint European Torus is studied using neutron emission spectroscopy with the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR. The energy dependence of the fast deuteron distribution function is inferred from the measured spectrum of neutrons born in DD fusion reactions, and the inferred distribution is compared with theoretical models for ICRF heating. Good agreements between modelling and measurements are seen with clear features in the fast-ion distribution function, that are due to the finite Larmor radius of the resonating ions, replicated. Strong synergetic effects between ICRF and neutral beam injection heating were also seen. The total energy content of the fast-ion population derived from TOFOR data was in good agreement with magnetic measurements for values below 350 kJ.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 50:8, s. 084006-

    • Ion cyclotron radio frequency (ICRF) heating can produce fast ion populations with energies reaching up to several megaelectronvolts. Here, we present unique measurements of fast ion distributions from an experiment with 3rd harmonic ICRF heating on deuterium beams using neutron emission spectroscopy (NES). From the experiment, very high DD neutron rates were observed, using only modest external heating powers. This was attributed to acceleration of deuterium beam ions to energies up to about 2-3 MeV, where the DD reactivity is on a par with that of the DT reaction. The high neutron rates allowed for observations of changes in the fast deuterium energy distribution on a time scale of 50 ms. Clear correlations were seen between fast deuterium ions in different energy ranges and magnetohydrodynamic activities, such as monster sawteeth and toroidal Alfven eigen modes (TAE). Specifically, NES data showed that the number of deuterons in the region between 1 and 1.5 MeV were decaying significantly during strong TAE activity, while ions with lower energies around 500 keV were not affected. This was attributed to resonances with the TAE modes.

  • Customer segmentation based on buying and returning behaviour
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 43:10, s. 852-865
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to empirically test whether a “one size fits all” strategy fits the fashion e-commerce business and second, to evaluate whether consumer returns are a central aspect of the creation of profitability and, if so, to discuss the role of returns management (RM) in the supply chain strategy. Design/methodology/approach – Transactional sales and return data were analysed and used to categorise customers based on their buying and returning behaviours, measuring each customer's net contribution margins. Findings – The e-commerce business collects a vast quantity of data, but these data are seldom used for the development of service differentiation. This study analysed behaviour patterns and determined that the segmentation of customers on the basis of both sales and return patterns can facilitate a differentiated service delivery approach. Research limitations/implications – This research empirically supports the theory that customer buying and returning behaviours can be used to appropriately categorise customers and thereby guide the development of a more differentiated service approach. Practical implications – The findings support a differentiated service delivery system that utilises a more dynamic approach, conserving resources and linking the supply chain and/or organisational strategies with customers' buying and returning behaviours to avoid over and underservicing customers. Originality/value – Consumer returns are often viewed as a negative aspect of doing business; interestingly, however, the authors revealed that the most profitable customer is a repeat customer who frequently returns goods.

    • Recent experiments at JET aimed at producing He-4 ions in the MeV range through third harmonic ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) acceleration of He-4 beams in a He-4 dominated plasma. MeV range D was also present through parasitic ICRH absorption on residual D. In this contribution, we analyze TOFOR neutron spectrometer data from these experiments. A consistent description of the data is obtained with d(d, n)(3) He and Be-9(alpha, n)C-12 neutron components calculated using Stix distributions for the fast D and He-4, taking finite Larmor radius effects into account and with a ICRH power partition of P-D(RF) = 0.01 X P-4He(RF), in agreement with TOMCAT simulations.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 44th US Rock Mechanics Symposium and the 5th US/Canada Rock Mechanics Symposium, Salt Lake City, United States, 27-30 June 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The coupling between hydraulic conductivity and normal stress along a discrete fracture has been developed from laboratory tests on small-scale samples. Those results for crystalline rock show a strong coupling between flow and normal stress, particularly when the normal stress is less than approximately 10 MPa. The flow for 611 discrete fractures was determined at the Forsmark site over depths ranging from 100 to 800 m. The orientation of the these discrete fractures were determined using Bips images and the normal stress acting on the fracture calculated from the in-situ stress model for the site. The strong coupling between stress and flow observed in small-scale laboratory tests is not supported by the in situ results.

    • This paper presents the results of neutronic calculations performed to address important issues related to the optimization of the ITER HRNS (High resolution Neutron Spectrometer) design, in particular concerning the definition of the collimator and the choice of the detector system. The calculations have been carried out using the MCNP5 Monte Carlo code in a full 3-D geometry. The HRNS collimation system has been included in the latest MCNP ITER 40 model (Alite-4). The ITER scenario 2 reference DT plasma fusion neutron source peaked at 14.1 MeV with Gaussian energy distribution has been used. Neutron fluxes and energy spectra (>1 MeV) have been evaluated at different positions along the HRNS collimator and at the detector location. The noise-to-signal ratio (i.e. the ratio of collided to uncoilided neutrons), the breakdown of the collided spectrum into its components, the dependency on the first wall aperture and the gamma-ray spectra at the detector position have also been analyzed. The impact of the results on the design of the HRNS diagnostic system is discussed.

  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 81:10, s. 10E136-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Notwithstanding the advances of the past decades, significant developments are still needed to satisfactorily diagnose "burning plasmas." D-T plasmas indeed require a series of additional measurements for the optimization and control of the configuration: the 14 MeV neutrons, the isotopic composition of the main plasma, the helium ash, and the redistribution and losses of the alpha particles. Moreover a burning plasma environment is in general much more hostile for diagnostics than purely deuterium plasmas. Therefore, in addition to the development and refinement of new measuring techniques, technological advances are also indispensable for the proper characterization of the next generation of devices. On JET an integrated program of diagnostic developments, for JET future and in preparation for ITER, has been pursued and many new results are now available. In the field of neutron detection, the neutron spectra are now routinely measured in the energy range of 1-18 MeV by a time of flight spectrometer and they have allowed studying the effects of rf heating on the fast ions. A new analysis method for the interpretation of the neutron cameras measurements has been refined and applied to the data of the last trace tritium campaign (TTE). With regard to technological upgrades, chemical vapor deposition diamond detectors have been qualified both as neutron counters and as neutron spectrometers, with a potential energy resolution of about one percent. The in situ calibration of the neutron diagnostics, in preparation for the operation with the ITER-like wall, is also promoting important technological developments. With regard to the fast particles, for the first time the temperature of the fast particle tails has been obtained with a new high purity Germanium detector measuring the gamma emission spectrum from the plasma. The effects of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes modes and various MHD instabilities on the confinement of the fast particles have been determined with a combination of gamma ray cameras, neutral particle analyzers, scintillator probe, and Faraday cups. From a more technological perspective, various neutron filters have been tested to allow measurement of the gamma ray emission also at high level of neutron yield.

    • A detailed description of the 14 MeV neutron emission in plasmas heated by neutral beam injection has been carried out by coupling Monte Carlo calculations of the neutron emission spectrum with TRANSP modelling of the beam ion energy distributions. The model is used to study tritium beam injection experiments of the JET trace tritium campaign for internal transport barrier (ITB) and H-mode discharges. For ITB discharges, the measured neutron emission spectrum is well described by modelling using as input the beam ion distribution calculated with TRANSP. For H mode discharges the neutron spectrum can be reproduced only if high energy tritons are lost from the plasma, suggesting the possible role of low frequency tearing modes on the beam ions. The presented results are of relevance for tritium beam transport studies in trace tritium experiments and, more generally, for deuterium and tritium transport studies in high power experiments using neutron emission spectroscopy.

The first one consists of two horizontal cameras, one equatorial and one vertically down-shifted by 65 cm. The second design, viewing the plasma in a poloidal section, also consists of two cameras, one radial and the other one with a diagonal view. Design parameters for the different cameras were selected on the basis of neutron transport calculations and on a set of target measurement requirements taking into account the predicted neutron emissivities in the different MAST Upgrade operating scenarios. Based on a comparison of the cameras' profile resolving power, the horizontal cameras are suggested as the best option.
