    • Artificial Intelligence offers a wide variety of capabilities that can potentially address people's needs and desires in their specific contexts. This pilot study presents a collaborative method using a deck of AI cards tested with 58 production, AI, and information science students, and experts from an accessible media agency. The results suggest that, with the support of the method and AI cards, participants can ideate and reach conceptual AI solutions. Such conceptualisations can contribute to a more inclusive integration of AI solutions in society.

    • Novel IoT market solutions and research promise IoT modules that do not require  programming or electrical setup, yet shop floor personnel need to face problem solving  activities to create technical solutions. This paper introduces the Karakuri card deck and  presents a case study composed of four workshop sessions in four manufacturing settings,  where shop floor personnel tested the cards as a means of ideating and presenting  conceptual IoT solutions in the form of diagrams. The results indicate the validity of the  proposed conceptual solutions and suggest prototyping as a next step.

    • The availability of new research for IoT support and the human-centric perspective of industry 4.0 opens a gap to support operators in unleashing their creativity so they can provide improvements opportunities with IoT technology. This paper presents a case-study carried out in four Swedish manufacturing companies, where four different workshops were facilitated to support operators in the conceptualization of manufacturing improvements with IoT technologies. The empirical material gathered during these workshops has been analyzed in five different reflective sessions and discussed in light of previous research from industry 4.0, operators, and IoT support. Results indicate that operators can collaboratively create conceptual IoT solutions and that expressiveness in communicating their ideas and needs using IoT technology is more relevant than technical aspects and details of their proposed IoT solutions. This technological expressiveness is identified as a necessary skill to be cultivated on the shop floor and can potentially contribute to making a more effective and socially sustainable industrial landscape in the future.

    • Globalization and digitalization are buzz words in contemporary society. They affect both our private and our professional lives. Society has become more diverse with easier access to information and to virtual platforms that gives us opportunity to be in touch with colleagues, friends, family, etc. at any time. A complex environment is emerging wherein internet of things and big data are being integrated with products, production systems, healthcare, and daily activity and play an important part in decision making. This has an impact on future designs and the role of designers. Responsible designers with a holistic perspective are needed. The book highlights several aspects of design thinking such as Information Design and Critical Design. The meaning of culture, gender and disabilities are also discussed. The functions of Information Design are changing from 'showing the way', instruction manuals and graphic design. It will affect among others, healthcare technology, smart products and Industry 4.0. Design thinking perspective that includes users from the entire chain and from the producer to the end user of the product or service, is needed. This will also require gender and culture issues to be taken into consideration in designing products and services. Design thinking methods and critical aspects of design will contribute to an inclusive society.

    • The aim of this design project is to explore ways of co-designing instructional videos, together with representatives from the elderly care sector, that show how to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) related to the Covid-19 pandemic and how to follow basic hygiene routines. We have used Design Thinking (DT) and Research through design (RtD) methodology. The results show that the main improvements derived from using a co-design process were input on the details needed to make the video more realistic and reflective of real-world scenarios.

    • A testbed was developed aiming to contribute to further knowledge on what is required from a VR application in order to be useful for planning of assembly tasks. In a pilot study the testbed was tested on students. The focus of the study was to explore the users' behaviour, and to gain a better understanding of their experience using VR. The students experienced a gap between the real world and VR, which confirms theories that VR is not a copy or twin of an object or environment.

    • Visual awareness is essential to developing and implementing visualizations that meet the needs of cross-functional teams. The theoretical and practical domain of information design can potentially play a major role in such collaborative working processes by improving flows of relevant information and aiding communication between stakeholders. We argue that one way this can be achieved is by exploiting the boundary object concept, in combination with knowledge from the visual field, and recommending guidelines intended to help clients formulate requirements when planning factory layouts which, with appropriate modification, may also provide support in similar situations. Our suggested guidelines for constructing block layouts and diagrams in factory layout planning highlight the value of simple visualizations based on spatial relationships; utilizing information on available spaces, sizes of machines, and their relationships to human proportions. Such block layouts and diagrams can also be used for ergonomic planning and logistics. The visuals can act as boundary objects between various stakeholders, including those who create CAD models in VR environments.

  • Relational Sensitivity in Participatory Design : Thinking and making together through joint inquiry

    • Participatory design processes can entail involving individuals, groups, and communities in joint inquiry to deliberate on their current situation, imagine alternative futures, and forge possible collaborations. Relational sensitivity – drawing attention to relationships in a given situation – is important when staging (i.e., organising and designing for) and facilitating joint inquiry. It is a valuable concept with which to illuminate and discuss contingent circumstances that may arise and, more generally, to support participation in joint inquiry. This PhD thesis explores and develops views of and a vocabulary for discussing relational sensitivity so as to support practitioners in staging joint inquiry. The thesis includes both a literature review and practice-based studies, applying a research through design approach to discuss relational sensitivity. The practice-based studies examine two participatory design processes: the collaborative designing of a communal space with university students, and the development of shared practices and rituals in a co-working space with professionals from the public sector. The practice-based studies also include nine design experiments in which situations for joint inquiry have been staged in academic contexts and in a museum. Through the literature- and practice-based studies, the thesis addresses two research questions: “How can relational sensitivity be understood when staging situations for joint inquiry?” and “How can the study of relational sensitivity inform practitioners when staging situations for joint inquiry?” Research methods include the use of field notes, journal notes, collective analysis, audio- and video-recordings, and questionnaires.The results include three perspectives from which to understand relational sensitivity when staging joint inquiry: sensitivity to self (e.g., reflexivity, self-awareness, and embodied awareness), sensitivity to intersubjective dynamics (e.g., attunement and responsiveness to group dynamics, affect, emotions, values, trust, and power dynamics), and sensitivity to materiality and process (e.g., the roles of materials, artefacts, and activities in reflection, social cohesion, and diverse contexts, and the role of the body in power dynamics). While relational sensitivity is primarily discussed in relation to practitioners – i.e., those staging joint inquiry – this thesis also discusses the importance of cultivating participants’ awareness of the self and others when staging joint inquiry to collectively support participation.Overall, this research contributes to the research fields of innovation and design and of participatory design by developing knowledge of relational sensitivity and its role in staging situations for joint inquiry. It provides insights into how practitioners can develop, discuss, and study their relational sensitivity and support participants in participatory design processes.

  • Shaping thought through action : A study of the use and design of technical information

    • This dissertation deals with the design of technical information, such as a user manual for an industrial device, based on the searching and reading behaviour of process operators and maintenance technicians. Such industrial professionals, who use tools like measuring equipment, are sometimes unable to get the support they need from searching and reading in a text- and image-based tool manual in order to perform work tasks. If such a manual is the only available source of information, the user will either give up or attempt a workaround which ends up compromising the safety, quality, satisfaction, efficiency or effectiveness of the work task. Research within technical communication and human-computer interaction suggests how manuals can be designed to support users in accomplishing tasks. These suggestions are based upon studies of how users approach the use of tools and tool manuals, as well as how the design of procedural and declarative information supports users. However, there is limited knowledge about how users search and read manuals, and how manuals can be designed to support such searching and reading behaviour. This dissertation aims to contribute knowledge to technical communicators about how technical information can be designed to support industrial professionals in accomplishing their work tasks. An ethnographic research method was selected to study the behaviour exhibited by process operators and maintenance technicians’ while they search and read sources of information in order to perform work tasks with tools. The results show that some participants were unable to perform a task after searching and reading the manual. The empirical material has been analysed using Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. This was to gain a deeper understanding of how thought and language influence—and are influenced by—searching and reading behaviours, as well as the task behaviours during tool use. This dissertation's contribution is a design method for technical communicators that will enable them to support users in the shaping of mental representations about what results are possible to accomplish with a tool. The method involves the design of tangible tokens that signify the results and components of a tool. As the end-user arranges these symbols into a result model they are supported in their process of shaping a mental representation.

  • Designing workstations for human–industrial robot collaboration : Development and application of simulation software

    • Human-industrial robot collaboration (HIRC) creates an opportunity for an ideal combination of human senses and industrial robot efficiency. The strength, endurance and accuracy of industrial robots can be combined with human intelligence and flexibility to create workstations with increased productivity, quality and reduced ergonomic load compared with traditional manual workstations. Even though multiple technical developments of industrial robot and safety systems have taken place over the last decade, solutions facilitating HIRC workstation design are still limited. One element in realising an efficient design of a future workstation is a simulation software. Thus the objective of this research is to (1) develop a demonstrator software that simulates, visualises and evaluates HIRC workstations and (2) propose a design process of how to apply such a simulation software in an industrial context.The thesis comprises five papers describing the development of a HIRC simulation software and its corresponding design process. Two existing simulation software tools, one for digital human modelling and one for robotic simulation, were merged into one application. Evaluation measures concerning operation time and ergonomic load were included in the common software. Existing engineering design methods were applied in a HIRC workstation context to describe the utilisation of a HIRC simulation software. These developments were demonstrated in five actual industrial cases from a heavy vehicle manufacturing company.The HIRC simulation software developed enables simulation, visualisation and evaluation of all kinds of HIRC workstations where human and robot simultaneously work in a collaborative environment including hand-guiding tasks. Multiple layout alternatives can be visualised and compared with quantitative numbers of total operation time and biomechanical load on the human body. An integrated HIRC workstation design process describes how such a simulation software can be applied to create suitable workstations. This process also includes a safety measure by which the collision forces between the industrial robot and the human are predicted. These forces have to be minimised to tolerable limits in order to design safe HIRC workstations.The HIRC simulation software developed and the proposed workstation design process enable more efficient HIRC workstation design. The possibility of designing and evaluating HIRC alternatives for hand-guiding activities is rarely found in other simulation software. The evaluation could include different types of layout alternatives and workstations: HIRC, fully manual or fully automatic. All of these could be compared based on their total operation time and biomechanical load and thus be used in workstation design decision making.

    • Boken du håller i är ett delresultat från projekt Vis’man som handlar om designforskning inom visuell och spatial kommunikation och management från användarens perspektiv. I projektet har vi studerat visualiseringens roll och funktion inom visuell management och de tavlor som används vid visuell ledning, planering och uppföljning och i förbättringsarbetet. Det kan vara målstyrningstavlor, Lean-tavlor, teamtavlor, styrtavlor med flera. Ett mål har varit att undersöka och utveckla tavlorna och deras omgivning tillsammans med projektdeltagarna. Dessutom har metoder för användarmedverkan tagits fram, för att olika aktörer ska tillsammans kunna undersöka, utveckla och utvärdera informationsdesign inom visuell management. Projektet har finansierats av KK-stiftelsen genom programmet HÖG. Vi som deltagit är forskare i forskargruppen Informationsdesign vid Mälardalens högskola och industriforskare från Rise i Mölndal. Projektet har utförts tillsammans med svensk tillverkningsindustri, Volvo Construction Equipment i Eskilstuna, Union Electrics Åkers, Falks Metall AB och Gårö Plåtprodukter AB. Studier har även skett tillsammans med Vård och omsorgsförvaltningen vid Eskilstuna kommun. Den här boken presenterar teorier och metoder som relaterar till visuell management, samt erfarenheter från praktiken. Boken vänder sig till dig som har viss yrkeserfarenhet av visuell management och till studenter som studerar informationsdesign, servicedesign, gränssnittsdesign, produkt- och processutveckling, ledning och styrning eller liknande områden.

    • Today, many services, such as ticket purchase and cash withdrawal, are provided by stationary machines such as ATM and ticket machines placed in train stations and travel centers. Personalized service is not always available, and users are referred to machines and automats. Previous research on ATM and ticket machines mostly focus on user interface and do not take the contextual conditions into consideration. A well-designed interface may not work under conditions such as poor lighting and time limitations of the service which affects the usability. The focus of this paper is not the physical or digital design of ATM and ticket automats as such, but rather how they function in their environment, and how that will affect users; especially old people with some sensory limitations such as limited eyesight and partial motor skills. The empirical study indicates that the physical environment of these machines and automats is crucial for how the service works. Identified parameters that affect usability are light conditions, auditory conditions, the liveliness of the setting and time limitations of services. If the contextual conditions surrounding the automat or machine does not work, it will be inaccessible to many users, however deliberate the design of their physical and digital interface. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
