  • Subjective and objective evaluation of impact noise sources in wooden buildings
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Building Acoustics. - 1351-010X. ; 20:3, s. 193-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-storey timber buildings up to 6 and more floors are increasingly built in many European countries. The challenge with these buildings can be that with traditional intermediate floor constructions in timber it can be difficult to fulfill the standard requirements and even when they are met, low frequency transmission can still cause complaints. Additionally it is difficult to develop appropriate light weight floor constructions since it is well known that the correlation between the standardized evaluation methods using the tapping machine and the human perception of impact noise can be poor, especially in buildings with light weight structures. In the AcuWood project, measurements and recordings on different intermediate timber floor constructions in the laboratory and the field were performed covering a wide range of modern intermediate timber floor constructions. Additionally, one intermediate concrete floor with different floor coverings was included in the study. Besides the standardized tapping machine, the modified tapping machine and the Japanese rubber ball and "real" sources were employed. Subjective ratings from listening tests were correlated to many technical single number descriptors including the standardized descriptors and non-standardized proposals. It was found that the Japanese rubber ball represents walking noise in its characteristics and spectrum best, taking into account the practical requirement of a strong enough excitation for building measurements. The standardized tapping machine, with an appropriate single number descriptor, L' nT, w + CI,50-2500 or slightly better, L' nT, w Hagberg 03, leads also to an acceptably high determination coefficient between the descriptor and the subjective ratings. Additionally, the study delivered data, from which proposals for requirements for the suggested single number ratings are deduced, based on the subjective ratings.

  • Designing interagency responses to wicked problems : Creating a common, cross-agency understanding
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Operational Research. - : Elsevier. - 0377-2217 .- 1872-6860. ; 294:1, s. 250-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wicked problems are open-ended, highly interdependent issues that cross agency, stakeholder, jurisdictional, and geopolitical boundaries. In response, there has been advocacy for interagency working. However, this confounds conventional approaches to government because policies and budgets tend to be aligned within organizational boundaries and not across them, making it difficult to bring the appropriate talent, knowledge and assets into an interagency approach to tackle the interdependencies of whatever wicked problem is at hand. In addition, the purposes, perspectives and values of the various government agencies and other stakeholders can often be in conflict. This paper reports on research to develop and evaluate a systemic intervention approach involving the use of multiple methods underpinned by boundary critique to address a wicked problem. The major focus is how to create a common understanding of a wicked problem among multiple agencies using a participatory problem structuring method called ‘systemic perspective mapping’. The wicked problem we tackled was international organized drug crime and its intersection with local urban gang activity (using Chicago, USA, as a representative city). Perspectives on the problem were structured with participation from various local, regional and federal agencies involved in countering illegal drug trafficking. Our research found that the combined use of boundary critique and systemic perspective mapping was able to generate enough of a common understanding to provide a foundation for the design of an interagency organization using the viable system model (the latter is reported elsewhere in the literature).

  • A Practical Quicksort Algorithm for Graphics Processors
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we describe GPU-Quicksort, an efficient Quicksort algorithm suitable for highly parallel multi-core graphics processors. Quicksort has previously been considered an inefficient sorting solution for graphics processors, but we show that in CUDA, NVIDIA's programming platform for general purpose computations on graphical processors, GPU-Quicksort performs better than the fastest known sorting implementations for graphics processors, such as radix and bitonic sort. Quicksort can thus be seen as a viable alternative for sorting large quantities of data on graphics processors.

  • Offshore deployments of wave energy converters by Uppsala University, Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Marine Systems and Ocean Technology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1679-396X .- 2199-4749. ; 14:2-3, s. 67-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ocean can provide an inexhaustible amount of energy. Many marine energy converters have been developed but most of them have not surpassed the experimental phase due to the high costs in installation, operation, and maintenance. Since 2002 Uppsala University has developed and deployed several units of wave energy converters of various designs. The Uppsala University wave energy converter concept consists of a linear generator directly connected to a point absorber buoy that is mounted on a concrete gravity foundation. Uppsala University deployments have been carried out using different deployment vessels and methods. Three main methods were utilized for these deployments that are discussed in terms of cost, manpower, and time efficiency. Depending on the desired outcome—multiple- or single-device deployment, low budget, etc.—one of the proposed methods can be used for the optimal outcome.

  • Randomized iterative spherical‐deconvolution informed tractogram filtering
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NeuroImage. - : Academic Press Inc.. - 1053-8119 .- 1095-9572. ; 278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tractography has become an indispensable part of brain connectivity studies. However, it is currently facing problems with reliability. In particular, a substantial amount of nerve fiber reconstructions (streamlines) in tractograms produced by state-of-the-art tractography methods are anatomically implausible. To address this problem, tractogram filtering methods have been developed to remove faulty connections in a postprocessing step. This study takes a closer look at one such method, Spherical-deconvolution Informed Filtering of Tractograms (SIFT), which uses a global optimization approach to improve the agreement between the remaining streamlines after filtering and the underlying diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data. SIFT is not suitable for judging the compliance of individual streamlines with the acquired data since its results depend on the size and composition of the surrounding tractogram. To tackle this problem, we propose applying SIFT to randomly selected tractogram subsets in order to retrieve multiple assessments for each streamline. This approach makes it possible to identify streamlines with very consistent filtering results, which were used as pseudo-ground truths for training classifiers. The trained classifier is able to distinguish the obtained groups of complying and non-complying streamlines with the acquired data with an accuracy above 80%.

  • International education imperatives and the era of ethical practice : a Swedish higher education case study example.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: CONGRESS2014.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As internationalization of higher education (HE) reaches a forty-year trajectory point, its community of scholars recognize an ever present fragmentation in the field. Four decades of worldwide conceptual and pedagogical incentives have not yielded consensus about successful policy to practice implementation (Ninnes & Hellstén, 2005), nor of its impact upon intercultural understanding (Marginson & Sawir, 2012) or language gains (Grin, 2012). Indeed, the overall advantages of internationalization as a measure of coercive responsiveness to the social justice and civic needs imposed by globalization, remain uncertain.  The outcome of such to date is an uneven distribution of HE provisions on account of the recent world economic crises. The responsiveness of international higher education (HE) to current global flows in employability, mobility and competitiveness has been articulated in national, regional and local level policy guidelines over the past decades. The Swedish government has recently formulated international dimensions in public HE policy, as a need to inform intercultural diversity and innovation, and as a crucial feature of academic provision in the 21st Century (HSV, 2008; European Unit, 2000; Minister of Education, Research and Culture, 2005). One consensus account is a recent collaborative forum initiated by the Swedish Research Council (VR), introducing international mobility as an Action plan strategy (VR, 2012). At the public policy level however, internationalization remains caught in the conflict between the degree of internationalization and academic quality, breaking the assumption that merely having international policies in place provides for higher academic excellence.  The ethical element of implementation of international policies remains a valid imperative, as addressed in the current contributions in the collection of this symposium. This paper reports one aspect of a Swedish case study, as based on survey data from one public HE institution. Surveys were collected from students in three academic discipline areas, education, humanities and sciences on the responses of the international education system and upon the processes affecting its actors. The survey data is discussed from the perspective of identifying processes that provide alternatives to profit-seeking, unethical, and market driven internationalization approaches, and in relation to the body of the larger international empirical research consortium data framework.

  • Psychotherapy in rheumatoid arthritis : A parallel-process study of psychic state and course of rheumatic disease
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Rheumatologie. - 0301-6382. ; 55:1, s. 28-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, well-known psychosomatic (psychoneuroimmunological) connections have been used for therapeutic purposes. Fifteen patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were treated with analytical insight therapy for 60-90 min weekly during 10 months to 4.5 years (median 3.3 years). Six patients showed great and largely continuous improvement, both psychic and physical, throughout the period of psychotherapy and often for a long time thereafter. In another five cases, improvements in psychic state and the joint disease took place over a period of 1-2 years. Later, when the emotional channels to childhood traumata were opened, these five patients relapsed and the course of their disease became more variable. In four cases, the connections between psychic state and the course of the joint disease were more varied throughout the period of psychotherapy. In the studied group the correlation between psychic state and course of rheumatic disease was highly significant. The probability of the outcome of the study being due to chance alone is considered very small, especially taking into account the fact that RA is a chronic progressive disease.

  • Dynamic and stochastic structures in tourism demand modeling
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Empirical Economics. - Heidelberg : Physica Verlag. - 0377-7332 .- 1435-8921. ; 30:2, s. 379-392
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we consider a model for international tourism demand. The point of departure of the analysis is a utility function that is both dynamic and stochastic. In the model the stochastic component is interpreted as random changes in preferences for goods and services, while the dynamic component can be seen as either habit formation or as interdependent preferences. The resulting demand functions are estimated as a multivariate state space model, where the stochastic components enter the model as stochastic seasonal and trend components. An application is constructed for different segments of the Swedish tourism market. The results indicate the importance of including both dynamic and stochastic components in the utility function, and the importance of using disaggregate data to enable investigation of each market segment.

  • Electron magnetic reconnection without ion coupling in Earth's turbulent magnetosheath
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 557:7704, s. 202-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic reconnection in current sheets is a magnetic-to-particle energy conversion process that is fundamental to many space and laboratory plasma systems. In the standard model of reconnection, this process occurs in a minuscule electron-scale diffusion region(1,2). On larger scales, ions couple to the newly reconnected magnetic-field lines and are ejected away from the diffusion region in the form of bi-directional ion jets at the ion Alfven speed(3-5). Much of the energy conversion occurs in spatially extended ion exhausts downstream of the diffusion region(6). In turbulent plasmas, which contain a large number of small-scale current sheets, reconnection has long been suggested to have a major role in the dissipation of turbulent energy at kinetic scales(7-11). However, evidence for reconnection plasma jetting in small-scale turbulent plasmas has so far been lacking. Here we report observations made in Earth's turbulent magnetosheath region (downstream of the bow shock) of an electron-scale current sheet in which diverging bi-directional super-ion-Alfvenic electron jets, parallel electric fields and enhanced magnetic-to-particle energy conversion were detected. Contrary to the standard model of reconnection, the thin reconnecting current sheet was not embedded in a wider ion-scale current layer and no ion jets were detected. Observations of this and other similar, but unidirectional, electron jet events without signatures of ion reconnection reveal a form of reconnection that can drive turbulent energy transfer and dissipation in electron-scale current sheets without ion coupling.

  • Optimizing the operating temperature for an array of MOX sensors on an open sampling system
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Olfaction and electronic nose. - : AIP. - 9780735409200 ; , s. 225-227
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chemo-resistive transduction is essential for capturing the spatio-temporal structure of chemical compounds dispersed in different environments. Due to gas dispersion mechanisms, namely diffusion, turbulence and advection, the sensors in an open sampling system, i.e. directly exposed to the environment to be monitored, are exposed to low concentrations of gases with many fluctuations making, as a consequence, the identification and monitoring of the gases even more complicated and challenging than in a controlled laboratory setting. Therefore, tuning the value of the operating temperature becomes crucial for successfully identifying and monitoring the pollutant gases, particularly in applications such as exploration of hazardous areas, air pollution monitoring, and search and rescue I. In this study we demonstrate the benefit of optimizing the sensor's operating temperature when the sensors are deployed in an open sampling system, i.e. directly exposed to the environment to be monitored.

  • Orientalism in 19th-Century Swedish Historiography of Philosophy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: East Asian Journal of Philosophy. - : sdvig press. - 2813-0448 .- 2813-043X. ; 2:1, s. 61-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the 19th century, most Swedish philosophers considered the Orient, rather than ancient Greece, the birthplace of philosophical thought. This article examines the arguments in support of this viewpoint and reconstructs the meaning of the concept “oriental philosophy” used at the time. The aims of this article are therefore twofold. Firstly, it examines and maps out the way in which the history of philosophy was treated by 19th century Swedish philosophers. This question has not been studied in depth, and the article therefore contributes to a deeper understanding of Swedish academic philosophy during this period. Secondly, since the Swedish source material contains many examples of how historians of philosophy described oriental thought, the article also contributes to an understanding of modern European orientalism and oriental studies in general. The conclusion is that, as a concept, oriental philosophy played a key role in 19th-century debates on the origins of philosophical thought; ideas about oriental culture could be, and indeed were, used both to formulate Eurocentric narratives about the history of philosophy and to challenge such narratives. This article suggests that its conclusion could likely be extended to German historiography of philosophy, and that further studies on this issue are needed.

  • Clarkson type inequalities and geometric properties of banach spaces
  • 1999
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis Clarkson's inequalities and their generalizations are the main tools. The technique that can be used to prove Clarkson type inequalities in more dimensions is shown. We also establish Clarkson type inequalities in general Banach spaces and point out the connections between Clarkson's inequalities and the concept of type and cotype. The classical results on the von Neumann-Jordan constant, closely related to Clarkson's inequalities, are shortly presented. The concepts of moduli of convexity and smoothness, which are connected with the geometry of Banach spaces, are discussed. Some equivalent ways of describing modulus of convexity and some properties of this function are formulated. The estimation of the modulus of convexity for L(p)-spaces is presented as well. Finally, several examples of moduli of convexity and smoothness for different spaces are described.

  • Evaluation of and recovery from impairment after Colles' fracture : A physiotherapeutic approach
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Colles' fracture is one of the most common fractures and is particularly frequent in middle-aged and elderly women. Following acute surgical interventions and immobilization, many of the patients are referred for physiotherapy; but physiotherapy has not been shown to have a beneficial effect on the rate of functional recovery and on residual impairment. It appears that the available methods forassessing degree of impairment may cause uncertainty concerning physiotherapeutic treatment rationales. The general aims of this dissertational work were to evaluate and refine methods for measuring maximal isometric grip strength and active range of motion (AROM) in the wrist and forearm in order to identify possible specific needs for physiotherapy after immobilization. Hence, methods for measuring grip strength and AROM in the wrist and forearm were developed and the reliability evaluated in clinically healthy subjects and in 33 patients initially immobilized for Colles' fracture. The capacity of the methods to quantitatively and reliably discriminate between impaired and unimpaired grip strength and also AROM was evaluated. Recovery of grip strength and AROM was followed for up to two years after the fracture. The reliability and discriminative capacity of the methods were high, a finding which may support their clinical use. The course of grip strength and AROM recovery varied interindividually and AROM generally recovered faster than grip strength. When handedness was taken into account, neither grip strength nor AROM recovered completely within the two-year follow-up. These findings indicate that after Colles' fracture there is, at least in physiotherapy, a need for well-designed and adequately tested assessment methods upon which rationales for physiotherapy can be based.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Conservation Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1566-0621 .- 1572-9737. ; 11, s. 355-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Population census size (N C) and effective population sizes (N e) are two crucial parameters that influence population viability, wildlife management decisions, and conservation planning. Genetic estimators of both N C and N e are increasingly widely used because molecular markers are increasingly available, statistical methods are improving rapidly, and genetic estimators complement or improve upon traditional demographic estimators. We review the kinds and applications of estimators of both N C and N e, and the often undervalued and misunderstood ratio of effective-to-census size (N e /N C). We focus on recently improved and well evaluated methods that are most likely to facilitate conservation. Finally, we outline areas of future research to improve N e and N C estimation in wild populations

  • 2015

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • August Bondeson’s novel The Memoirs of the Schoolteacher John Chronschough (in two volumes, 1897 and 1904) belongs to the classics of Swedish literature. The main reason for its fame is that it is conceived to exactly depict “the language which is written by all Swedes who cannot write” as a contemporary critic put it. This is the language of members of the new groups in society who had to acquire a language suitable for public use as a result of the democratization of Sweden during the latter half of the 19th century and who in the course of that process in many ways shaped today’s standard Swedish. This article describes the sociolinguistic situation in Sweden during the former turn of the century, and analyzes the language of the novel against this background. It is shown that – contrary to the common conception – it is a rather fine-tuned pastiche and not a grotesque parody. The fact that it still has had a widespread reputation for being a perfect imitation of “bad Swedish” implies that during this period there were clear notions regarding what was to be considered stylistically appropriate and inappropriate and also that many actually wrote in the way that was supposed to be wrong. Probably, such a situation primarily arises when new groups are entering into domains previously reserved for more privileged members of society who take for granted they have the right to define what is correct, proper and good. Then it is also logical that many linguistic phenomena have a clear shibboleth function: to distinguish “us” and “them” is both important and easy – members of the former standard-setting groups have a very clear idea of what is stigmatized. One of the major features of the development of Swedish during the 20th century has been a diminishing distinction between speech and writing, with pronunciation becoming more dependent on the written form, and the written language syntactically becoming less complex. It is obvious that this development is connected to the social transformation that forms the setting of The Memoirs of the Schoolteacher John Chronschough. Although it can hardly be said that the language of John Chronschough in terms of exact linguistic form has become the standard Swedish of today, it is clear that the stylistic patterns of persons such as Chronschough have been formative for today’s Swedish and its register variation.
