  • Longitudinal trajectories of sickness absence among young adults with a history of depression and anxiety symptoms in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Affective Disorders. - : Elsevier. - 0165-0327 .- 1573-2517. ; 339, s. 271-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Depression and anxiety are associated with increased risk of sickness absence (SA), yet the developmental patterns of SA remain unclear. We aimed to identify trajectories of SA in young adults with depression and/or anxiety, accounting for sociodemographic and occupational factors. Methods: Longitudinal study of 1445 twin individuals with elevated depressive/anxiety symptoms in late adolescence or young adulthood (age range: 19-30), assessed in Swedish surveys completed in 2005. Through linkage to nationwide registries, individuals were prospectively followed from 2006 to 2018. The outcome included consecutive annual days of SA, which were analyzed using group-based trajectory modeling. Multinomial logistic regression estimating odds ratios (OR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) was used to examine associations of age, sex, and educational level with the resulting SA trajectories. Results: Four distinct SA trajectories were identified in the total sample: 'high-increasing' (6 %), 'low-increasing' (12 %), 'high-decreasing' (13 %), and 'low-constant' (69 %). Increasing age was associated with higher odds of belonging to the low-increasing trajectory (OR = 1.07, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.12). Women had higher odds of belonging to the low-increasing trajectory (OR = 1.67, 95 % CI = 1.10-2.53), compared with men. Higher education was associated with lower odds of belonging to high-increasing (OR = 0.34, 95 % CI = 0.22-0.54) and high-decreasing (OR = 0.59, 95 % CI = 0.43-0.81) trajectories, compared with lower education. Few differences were observed in analyses stratified by occupational sector.Limitations: Information on potential confounders (e.g., psychiatric comorbidity, work-environment factors) was not available. Conclusions: Among young adults with prior depression/anxiety, close to every fifth showed rising SA trajectories over time. This calls for targeted strategies to improve public mental health already at young ages.

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy with applied relaxation
  • 2006. - 1
  • Ingår i: Tinnitus treatment.. - New York : Thieme. - 1588901815 - 3131320710 - 9781588901811 ; , s. 96-115
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Most clinicians have little experience with tinnitus treatments, and are unsure of how to help a patient suffering from the condition. Filling a significant gap in literature, this book offers a variety of in-depth protocols to treat tinnitus. Beginning with a review of several neurophysiological and psychological models of tinnitus, the book goes on to cover evaluation tools; counseling options and methods; treatment with hearing aids, wearable and non-wearable noise generators, and music; tinnitus-related insomnia; quality-of-life issues; and much more. Highly experienced clinicians give you the practical strategies to apply such therapeutic modalities as cognitive-behavioral therapy, individual and group sessions, sound therapy, habituation therapy, and narrative therapy. You will also find sample handouts to allow for effective communication with patients. With key clinical information for implementing all current therapies, this text is an essential professional tool for audiologists, psychologists, and other practitioners involved in managing otologic disorders.Richard Tyler, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery and in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of Iowa. Tyler and Sergei Kochkin, PhD recently sat down to talk about the results of a survey they conducted about tinnitus treatment and the effectiveness of hearing aids, which was published in the December 2008 edition of The Hearing Review. Click here to learn more and to watch a podcast that examines the survey results: http://www.hearingreview.com/podcast/files/ST20081218.asp.

  • Differentiation and Pathogenicity within the Saprolegniaceae : Studies on Physiology and Gene Expression Patterns in Saprolegnia parasitica and Aphanomyces astaci
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Saprolegnia parasitica and Aphanomyces astaci are parasitic water moulds belonging to the Oomycetes. Despite their importance as parasites they are very little studied at the molecular level and the work described in this thesis was aimed at increasing the molecular knowledge of these organisms by cloning and characterising genes of potential importance for reproduction and pathogenicity.Stage-specific transcripts from Saprolegnia parasitica were isolated by differential display RT-PCR. One of the markers, puf1 encodes a putative mRNA binding protein which may be involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. S. parasitica puf1 is expressed exclusively in spore cysts that have not been determined for germination or repeated zoospore emergence indicating that the cyst stage has two phases, of about equal duration, which are physiologically and transcriptionally distinct. A similar expression pattern is observed in Aphanomyces spp. with different regulation of spore development and in the transcript is detected in both primary and secondary cysts.A putative chitinase AaChi1, was cloned from the crayfish plague fungus, Aphanomyces astaci. Analysis of chitinase activity and AaChi1 expression showed that chitinase in A. astaci is constitutively expressed in growing and sporulating mycelia, but absent in zoospores, a pattern which reflects the infectious life cycle of A. astaci. This expression pattern is conserved between the four known genotypes of A. astaci, in contrast to saprophytic and fish-pathogenic Aphanomyces spp. Genetic and physiological analysis were conducted on five strains of Aphanomyces, isolated from suspected outbreaks of crayfish plague in Spain and Italy. The strains are not virulent against freshwater crayfish, and RAPD PCR and ITS sequence analysis show that they are unrelated to the crayfish plague fungus, A. astaci.

  • Innovating CBT and Answering New Questions: the Role of Internet-Delivered CBT
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cognitive Therapy. - : SPRINGER INT PUBL AG. - 1937-1209 .- 1937-1217. ; 17, s. 179-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) was developed in the late 1990s, and since then, a large number of studies have been conducted. Many programs have been developed and sometimes implemented, and ICBT has become a major way to investigate and innovate CBT including important questions regarding mechanisms and moderating factors. The aim of this narrative review was to comment on the treatment format, the evidence behind ICBT, innovations, and finally challenges. ICBT has been developed and tested for a range of conditions including both psychiatric and somatic health problems and also transdiagnostic problems like loneliness and poor self-esteem. Meta-analytic reviews suggest that guided ICBT can be as effective as face-to-face CBT and by using individual patient data meta-analytic methods (IPDMA), it is now possible have better power for the search of moderators. There are also several reports of how well ICBT works in regular clinical settings, mostly replicating the results reported in efficacy studies. Cost-effectiveness has also been documented as well as studies using qualitative methodology to document client and clinician experiences. In terms of innovation, there are now studies on problems for which there is limited previous face-to-face research, and one major advancement is the use of factorial design trials in which more than one independent variable is tested. Finally, ICBT has the potential to be useful in times of crisis, with the COVID-19 pandemic being one recent example. Future challenges include use of artificial intelligence in both treatment development and possibly treatment delivery. Another urgent priority is to reach less favored parts of the world as most studies and programs have been tested and implemented in Western countries. In conclusion, ICBT is now an established as a way to develop, test, and deliver CBT.

  • The latest developments with internet-based psychological treatments for depression
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1473-7175 .- 1744-8360. ; 24:2, s. 171-176
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionInternet-based psychological treatments for depression have been around for more than 20 years. There has been a continuous line of research with new research questions being asked and studies conducted.Areas coveredIn this paper, the author reviews studies with a focus on papers published from 2020 and onwards based on a Medline and Scopus search. Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) programs have been developed and tested for adolescents, older adults, immigrant groups and to handle a societal crisis (e.g. COVID-19). ICBT works in regular clinical settings and long-term effects can be obtained. Studies on different treatment orientations and approaches such as acceptance commitment therapy, unified protocol, and tailored treatments have been conducted. Effects on quality-of-life measures, knowledge acquisition and ecological momentary assessment as a research tool have been reported. Factorial design trials and individual patient data meta-analysis are increasingly used in association with internet intervention research. Finally, prediction studies and recent advances in artificial intelligence are mentioned.Expert opinionInternet-delivered treatments are effective, in particular if therapist guidance is provided. More target groups have been covered but there are many remaining challenges including how new tools like artificial intelligence will be used when treating depression.

  • The motives of foster parents, their family and work circumstances
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Social Work. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0045-3102 .- 1468-263X. ; 31:2, s. 235-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In foster care research the focus is generally placed on the children, not on the parents who perform the foster care. In this article the focus is on foster parents of 10-11 year-old children. They were interviewed about their motives for becoming foster parents, which were linked to their family and work circumstances. Among the 21 foster families in the study, four different but equally frequent reasons or motives for taking care of foster children from the very beginning could be distinguished: relatives who feel responsibility for a certain child; couples who want children and do not think they can have children of their own; families where the mother wants to be at home taking care of biological as well as foster children instead of having unskilled employed work outside the home; and parents with grown-up children who want to fill the 'empty nest' by becoming foster parents - combined with a family business at home or close to home. Changing family and work patterns in Sweden do not seem to have influenced foster families as much as families in general. The worth of acquiring more knowledge about the families involved in foster care of children and young people in order to improve foster care and reduce breakdowns of care is discussed.

  • Electrochemical Performance of Nitrogen-Doped TiO2 Nanotubes as Electrode Material for Supercapacitor and Li-Ion Battery
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Molecules. - : MDPI. - 1431-5157 .- 1420-3049. ; 24:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrochemical anodized titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes are of immense significance as electrochemical energy storage devices owing to their fast electron transfer by reducing the diffusion path and paving way to fabricating binder-free and carbon-free electrodes. Besides these advantages, when nitrogen is doped into its lattice, doubles its electrochemical activity due to enhanced charge transfer induced by oxygen vacancy. Herein, we synthesized nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) and studied its electrochemical performances in supercapacitor and as anode for a lithium-ion battery (LIB). Nitrogen doping into TiO2 was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The electrochemical performance of N-TiO2 nanotubes was outstanding with a specific capacitance of 835 mu F cm(-2) at 100 mV s(-1) scan rate as a supercapacitor electrode, and it delivered an areal discharge capacity of 975 mu A h cm(-2) as an anode material for LIB which is far superior to bare TiO2 nanotubes (505 mu F cm(-2) and 86 mu A h cm(-2), respectively). This tailor-made nitrogen-doped nanostructured electrode offers great promise as next-generation energy storage electrode material.

  • Electric drives as fog nodes in a fog computing-based industrial use case
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Engineering. - : WILEY. - 2051-3305. ; 2021:12, s. 745-761
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electric drives, which are a main component in industrial applications, control electric motors and record vital information about their respective industrial processes. The development of electric drives as Fog nodes within a fog computing platform (FCP) leads to new abilities such as programmability, analytics, and connectivity, increasing their value. In this study, the FORA FCP reference architecture is used to implement electric drives as Fog nodes, which is called "fogification". The fogified drive architecture and its components are designed using Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL). The design process was driven by the high-level requirements that the authors elicited. Both the fogified drive architecture and the current drive architecture are used to implement a self baggage drop system in which electric drives are the key components. The fog-based design was then evaluated using several key performance indicators (KPIs), which reveal its advantages over the current drive architecture. The evaluation results show that safety-related isolation is enabled with only 9% overhead on the total Fog node utilization, control applications are virtualized with zero input-output jitter, the hardware cost is reduced by 44%, and machine learning at the edge is performed without interrupting the main drive functionalities and with an average 85% accuracy. The conclusion is that the fog-based design can successfully implement the required electric drive functionalities and can also enable innovative uses needed for realizing the vision of Industry 4.0.

  • Fogification of Electric Drives: An industrial use case
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The 25th International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation ETFA2020.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electric drives are used to control electric motors, which are pervasive in industrial applications. In this paper we propose enhancing the electric drives to fulfil the role of fog nodes within a Fog Computing Platform (FCP). Fog Computing is envisioned as a realization of future distributed architectures in Industry 4.0. We identify the system-level requirements of such an FCP, including requirements that are extracted from the current architecture of drives, which we consider as a baseline. These requirements are then used to design a system-level architecture, which we model using the Architecture Analysis & Design Language (AADL). We identify the “technology bricks” (components such as hardware, software, middleware, services, methods and tools) needed to implement the FCP. The proposed fog-based architecture is then used to implement a Conveyor Belt industrial use case. We evaluate the resulting use case on several aspects, demonstrating the usefulness of the proposed fogbased approach. By developing the electric drives as fog nodes, new offerings like programmability, analytics and connectivity to customer Clouds are expected to increase the added value. Increased flexibility allows drives to assume a larger role in industrial and domestic control systems, instrumenting thus also legacy systems by using drives as the data source.

  • Hembygd i samtid och framtid 1890—1930. En museologisk studie av att bevara och förnya. (Past, present and future : A museological study of museums and the preservation of environment in Sweden c. 1890—1930.) : [Swedish with English summary.]
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation deals with renewal on the foundation of the past, as this idea was elaborated in the establishment of community museums and car of the environmental landscape from the late 19th century to the 1930s. During that period the movement of taking care of nature, culture, and mankind increased and dispersed into national, regional and local organisations. This phenomenon is, in Sweden, called the hembygdsrörelse (hembygd is a place with special values, and rörelse means movement). The new organisations were mostly established along with existing regional museums, bat at the time toward the end of this study many of the museums and new organisations merged together. These changes indicated that the position of the past in present society had altered. The thesis consists of a main analysis of this movement (chapters 1, 2 and 8) interwoven with five different studies of the significance of preservation and renewal of the past (chapters 3—7). The first of these studies deals with different representations of history and artefacts, that was present at the turn of the century. Next the youth movement in Norway and the rise of a Swedish youth movement and their ideas of the creation of a better future are focused. The initiatives to establish popular education, Swedish Folk High Schools, that arose in the youth movement is the third subject interleaved, and similar initiative in Finland are also regarded. Then follows a presentation of the international discourse that not only takes the preservation of cultural but also natural heritage into consideration. This is also an overview of the European situation with special regard to German speaking areas. The fifth study (chapter 7) focuses on different was to exhibit, and to relate to what is exhibited. An important change in the purpose of a museum was the discovery of folk culture at the end of the 19th century. In the process of changing Sweden from a country of peasants to a nation of industrialised workers, an important part was to define a common understanding of the past. This is also a way to understand the notion of something as new. In the final chapter (9) the discussions during the 1930s are mirrored. At this time the meaning of the past in the present, and the idea of the past in future society altered. In the rising welfare society the present new past had to support the development in another way than before. The idea of renewal on the foundations of the past had lost its importance.

  • Framtiden är redan byggd : 12 perspektiv
  • 2023

  • Purification and functional comparison of nine human Aquaporins produced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the purpose of biophysical characterization
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sparse number of high-resolution human membrane protein structures severely restricts our comprehension of molecular physiology and ability to exploit rational drug design. In the search for a standardized, cheap and easily handled human membrane protein production platform, we thoroughly investigated the capacity of S. cerevisiae to deliver high yields of prime quality human AQPs, focusing on poorly characterized members including some previously shown to be difficult to isolate. Exploiting GFP labeled forms we comprehensively optimized production and purification procedures resulting in satisfactory yields of all nine AQP targets. We applied the obtained knowledge to successfully upscale purification of histidine tagged human AQP10 produced in large bioreactors. Glycosylation analysis revealed that AQP7 and 12 were O-glycosylated, AQP10 was N-glycosylated while the other AQPs were not glycosylated. We furthermore performed functional characterization and found that AQP 2, 6 and 8 allowed flux of water whereas AQP3, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 also facilitated a glycerol flux. In conclusion, our S. cerevisiae platform emerges as a powerful tool for isolation of functional, difficult-To-express human membrane proteins suitable for biophysical characterization.

  • Allergy development and the intestinal microflora during the first year of life
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - 0091-6749 .- 1097-6825. ; 108:4, s. 516-520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The intestinal microflora is a likely source for the induction of immune deviation in infancy. Objective: The purpose of this study was to prospectively relate the intestinal microflora to allergy development in 2 countries differing with respect to the prevalence of atopic diseases. Methods: Newborn infants were followed prospectively through the first 2 years of life in Estonia (n = 24) and Sweden (n = 20). By that age, 9 Estonian and 9 Swedish infants had developed atopic dermatitis and/or positive skin prick test results. Stool samples were obtained at 5 to 6 days and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, and 13 groups of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms were cultivated through use of standard methods. Results: In comparison with healthy infants, babies who developed allergy were less often colonized with enterococci during the first month of life (72 % vs 96 %, P < .05) and with bifidobacteria during the first year of life (17 % to 39 % vs 42 % to 69 %, P < .05). Furthermore, allergic infants had higher counts of clostridia at 3 months (median value, 10.3 vs 7.2 log(10), P < .05). The prevalence of colonization with Staphylococcus aureus was also higher at 6 months (61 % vs 23 %, P < .05), whereas the counts of Bacteroides were lower at 12 months (9.9 vs 10.6 log(10), P < .05). Conclusion: Differences in the composition of the gut flora between infants who will and infants who will not develop allergy are demonstrable before the development of any clinical manifestations of atopy. Because the observations were made in 2 countries with different standards of living, we believe that our findings could indicate a role for the intestinal microflora in the development of and protection from allergy.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Energy Research and Social Science. - : Elsevier. - 2214-6296 .- 2214-6326. ; 3, s. 5-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A pertinent issue in the literature on communication on emerging technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) concerns the degree to which the public is actively involved in the communication process. While researchers have highlighted the pros and cons of limited versus extensive public engagement, the assumptions underlying various communication approaches have been largely neglected. Illuminating assumptions are important for scholarly understandings of what influences communication and for practitioner reflexive awareness in designing communication plans. This paper explores assumptions made about senders and receivers when involving the public to various degrees in CCS communication and how these assumptions relate to different communication objectives. We describe two contrasting communication approaches, the transmission and participatory approaches, relating them to CCS characteristics and research. We find that CCS communication may, deliberately or not, be based on different assumptions about the social framing of CCS concerning who should formulate the message, the public’s ability to understand complex science, the public’s interest in helping frame CCS, and whether public opinions should be taken into account. These assumptions also relate to different communication objectives – convincing the public or increasing dialogue – implying different communication fora, predictability, and input.

  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 36:13, s. 66-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to extend the knowledge on business model transformation (BMT) by developing an integrative framework for BMT dilemmas, including strategies for shaping and stabilizing market structures.Design/methodology/approach: The study uses a case-based approach, with data from the Swedish electric utility industry.Findings: The findings uncover practices related to both shaping and stabilizing market structure. The study contributes with insights for firms to overcome the BMT dilemma. Shaping strategies involve disruptive innovations while stabilizing strategies concerns incremental improvements in existing structures; by balancing these efforts, firms can find ways toward successful BMT.Originality/value: With a focus on incumbent firms and the balancing act of BMT in a network, the study covers areas that have scarcely been addressed in the existing literature. Even though most business model literature has focused on shaping consumer markets, the need to consider BMT as a dual-directional process in an industrial context is emphasized in this study.

  • Consensus statement on defining and measuring negative effects of Internet interventions
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Internet interventions have great potential for alleviating emotional distress, promoting mental health, and enhancing well-being. Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated their effectiveness for a number of psychiatric conditions, and interventions delivered via the Internet will likely become a common alternative to face-to-face treatment. Meanwhile, research has paid little attention to the negative effects associated with treatment, warranting further investigation of the possibility that some patients might deteriorate or encounter adverse events despite receiving best available care. Evidence from research of face-to-face treatment suggests that negative effects afflict 5-10% of all patients undergoing treatment in terms of deterioration. Objective: There is currently a lack of consensus on how to define and measure negative effects in psychotherapy research in general, leaving researchers without practical guidelines for monitoring and reporting negative effects in clinical trials. The current study therefore sought out to provide recommendations that could promote the study of negative effects in Internet interventions with the aim of increasing the knowledge of its occurrence and characteristics. Methods: Ten experts in the field of Internet interventions were invited to participate and share their perspective on how to explore negative effects, using the Delphi technique to facilitate a dialogue and reach an agreement. The authors discuss the importance of conducting research on negative effects in order to further the understanding of its incidence and different features. Results: Suggestions on how to classify and measure negative effects in Internet interventions are proposed, involving methods from both quantitative and qualitative research. Potential mechanisms underlying negative effects are also discussed, differentiating common factors shared with face-to-face treatments from those unique to treatments delivered via the Internet. Conclusions: We conclude that negative effects are to be expected and need to be acknowledged to a greater extent, advising researchers to systematically probe for negative effects whenever conducting clinical trials involving Internet interventions, as well as to share their findings in scientific journals.

    • Despite being considered a public health problem, no prevention programme for problem gambling in workplace settings has been scientifically evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a problem gambling (PG) prevention programme in a workplace setting. It was hypothesised that the workplace PG prevention programme will result in (1) managers reporting a higher inclination to engage in a conversation with an employee when suspicion or worry about PG arises, (2) an increase in the employees’ knowledge about where in the workplace one might get support regarding problem gambling, (3) an increased number of early interventions by the managers (eg, engage in a conversation) to help employees with PG or other types of harmful use, (4) managers and employees engaging in more sustainable gambling practices as measured by sum of Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scores, (5) fewer cases of PG among managers and employees as measured by PGSI categories and (6) managers reporting being more confident in handling gambling and PG in the workplace.Ten organisations, with a total of n=549 managers and n=8572 employees, were randomised to either receiving a prevention programme or to a waitlist control condition. Measurements was collected at the baseline and 3, 12 after intervention. At the time of the EASG-conference 12-month follow-up data will be available in addition to the already collected post-assessment data (analyzed according to the intention-to-treat principle).

    • Internet-delivered psychotherapy has a relatively short history, with the first trials being conducted in the late 1990s. Since then well above 200 randomized controlled trials suggest that it can be effective. So, the evidence is there but how is it done? In this talk a pioneer in the field will present recent research finding, including the use of virtual reality to treat phobias as well as fear of public speaking. The talk will use slides and video clips and ends with the possibility of asking questions and try psychotherapeutic virtual reality applications.

  • Magneto-optical and tunable laser excitation spectroscopy of spin-injection and spin loss from Zn(Cd)MnSe diluted magnetic quantum well to CdSe non-magnetic quantum dots
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magneto-optical spectroscopy in combination with tunable laser spectroscopy is employed to study the effect of sample design on optical spin-injection efficiency from a Zn(Cd)MnSe diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) into non-magnetic CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Two samples with inverted growth sequence of the DMS and QD layers were grown for this purpose. Despite observation of clear evidence for exciton/carrier-injection from the DMS to the QDs in both structures, their spin-injection efficiency is markedly different. The structure grown with the QD layer topmost exhibits rather efficient spin-injection, while the structure grown with the DMS layer topmost does not show any sign of spin-injection. Even in the former case, the spin-polarization of the injected excitons/carriers is deduced to be about 32%, decreasing from 100% before the injection. The observed spin loss is shown to occur during the spin-injection across the heterointerfaces. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • In recent decades, the concept of social capital has had an enormous impact on the social scientific debate, primarily through the works of Robert Putnam (1993, 2000). My view is that, despite its vagueness and the difficulties involved in operationalizing it, the concept expresses a distinction that is of significance for the maintenance and depth of democracy in different societies. At the same time, I am not convinced by the overarching thesis which Putnam puts forward concerning the fundamental role of associations and social networks in the creation of social capital. In this article I apply and develop further the views and the critique of Putnam put forward by, among others, Bo Rothstein (2005), relating to the role of what are termed universal institutions, and primarily of one such institution, the general school system, in creating social capital. My discussion gradually homes in on Swedish society and the changes it has undergone in recent decades. I also examine Rothstein’s term “universal institution” with reference to the Swedish compulsory school system.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Osteoporosis International. - : Springer. - 0937-941X .- 1433-2965. ; 16:9, s. 1117-1123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forty-eight community living women 66–87 years old volunteered to participate in a 12-month prospective, randomized, controlled, trial. The aim was to determine if a combined weight-bearing training program twice a week would be beneficial to bone mineral density and neuromuscular function. The participants were pairwise age-matched and randomly assigned to either an exercise group (n=24) or a control group (n=24). Twenty-one subjects in the intervention group and 19 in the control group completed the study. The exercise program lasted for 50 min and consisted of a combination of strengthening, aerobic, balance and coordination exercises. The mean percentage of scheduled sessions attended for the exercise group was 67%. At the completion of the study, the intervention group showed significant increments in bone mineral density of the Wards triangle (8.4%, P<0.01) as well as improvement in maximum walking speed (11.4%, P<0.001) and isometric grip strength (9.9%, P<0.05), as compared to the control group. The conclusion was that a combined weight-bearing training program might reduce fracture risk factors by improving bone density as well as muscle strength and walking ability. This program could be suitable for older community living women in general, and might, therefore, have important implications for fracture prevention.

  • A Voltage Dependent Non-Inactivating Na+ Channel Activated during Apoptosis in Xenopus Oocytes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science. - 1932-6203. ; 9:2, s. 0088381-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ion channels in the plasma membrane are important for the apoptotic process. Different types of voltage-gated ion channels are up-regulated early in the apoptotic process and block of these channels prevents or delays apoptosis. In the present investigation we examined whether ion channels are up-regulated in oocytes from the frog Xenopus laevis during apoptosis. The two-electrode voltage-clamp technique was used to record endogenous ion currents in the oocytes. During staurosporine-induced apoptosis a voltage-dependent Na+ current increased three-fold. This current was activated at voltages more positive than 0 mV (midpoint of the open-probability curve was +55 mV) and showed almost no sign of inactivation during a 1-s pulse. The current was resistant to the Na+-channel blockers tetrodotoxin (1 mM) and amiloride (10 mM), while the Ca2+-channel blocker verapamil (50 mM) in the bath solution completely blocked the current. The intracellular Na+ concentration increased in staurosporine-treated oocytes, but could be prevented by replacing extracellular Na+ whith either K+ or Choline(+). Prevention of this influx of Na+ also prevented the STS-induced up-regulation of the caspase-3 activity, suggesting that the intracellular Na+ increase is required to induce apoptosis. Taken together, we have found that a voltage dependent Na+ channel is up-regulated during apoptosis and that influx of Na+ is a crucial step in the apoptotic process in Xenopus oocytes.

  • Predictive information and maintenance optimization based on decision theory : a case study considering a welded joint in an offshore wind turbine support structure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Structural Health Monitoring. - : SAGE Publications. - 1475-9217 .- 1741-3168. ; 21:1, s. 185-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Predictive information and maintenance optimization for deteriorating structures is concerned with scheduling (a) the collection of information by inspection and monitoring and (b) maintenance actions such as repair, replacement, and retrofitting based on updated predictions of the future condition of the structural system. In this article, we consider the problem of jointly identifying—at the beginning of the service life—the optimal inspection time and repair strategy for a generic welded joint in a generic offshore wind turbine structure subject to fatigue. The optimization is performed based on different types of decision analyses including value of information analyses to quantify the expected service life cost encompassing inspection, repair, and fatigue damage for all relevant combinations of inspection time, repair method, and repair time. Based on the analysis of the expected service life cost, the optimal inspection time, repair method, and repair time are identified. Possible repair methods for a welded joint in an offshore environment include welding and grinding, for which detailed models are formulated and utilized to update the joint’s fatigue performance. The decision analyses reveal that an inspection should be scheduled approximately at mid-service life of the welded joint. A repair should be performed in the same year after an indication and measurement of a fatigue crack given an optimal inspection scheduling. This article concludes with a discussion on the results obtained from the decision and value of information analyses.

  • Co-doped cerium oxide Fe0.25xMnxCe0.75O2-delta as a composite cathode material for IT-SOFC
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - Amsterdam, Netherlands : Elsevier. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 906
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, Fe-Mn co-doped ceria Fe0.25Mn0.00Ce0.75O2-delta (FMDC1), Fe0.23Mn0.02Ce0.75O2-δ (FMDC2), Fe0.21Mn0.04Ce0.75O2-δ  (FMDC3), and Fe0.19Mn0.06Ce0.75O2-δ  (FMDC4) powders are synthesized by sol gel method and evaluated as cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC). The combination of Fe and Mn significantly enhanced the ceria catalytic activity and oxygen kinetics for redox-based reactions. The effects of the co-doping mechanism on the phase composition, optical behavior, and electrochemical performance are mainly investigated. The prepared samples are characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, UV-vis, and conductivity tests. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed well-developed crystallinity with a single phase cubic structure of synthesized cathode material. SEM depicted the highly porous facet for Fe0.19Mn0.06Ce0.75O2-δ  (FMDC4) resulted in the large triple-phase boundaries for the reduction of ambient air. The inclusion of Mn3+ and Fe3+ ions into CeO2 network created additional oxygen vacancies (Ov) and simultaneously reduced the optical band gap energy from 2.81 eV for FMDC1 (x = 0.00) to 2.54 eV for FMDC4 (x = 0.06). Among the four samples, FMDC4 possessed the highest electrical conductivity (∼0.89 Scm-1) at 650 degrees C and corresponding low activation energy of similar to 0.301 eV, which lead to good catalytic activity with an enhanced electrochemical performance of the SOFC system. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) attained the value of   ∼0.98 V, maximum power density of ∼335 mW cm-2 is obtained at 550 degrees C, which is comparable to previously reported electrodes. The results suggested that the combination of Fe and Mn into ceria can be used as an effective catalytic promoter for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), and the composition of FMDC4 resulted in the peak conductivity, short term stability and highest power density as compared to other synthesized samples. • 2012
  • Ingår i: Information Management and Business Review. - : AMH International Conferences and Seminars Organizing LLC. - 2220-3796. ; 4:4, s. 223-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to discuss brand elements and to explore its contribution to brand equity based on some relevant research reviews and some examples of prominent brands where brand elements have played a significant role to reach consumer’s head and heart. Brand is a combination of name, symbol or design, which creates a distinctive identity to consumers within a crowd of choices through its different brand elements. A distinctive or unique offering as well as get-up of a brand is the primary key of survival from the immature death in competition. Differentiating approach of different brand elements always cause a high level of brand awareness and familiarity among target consumers and later on individually or collectively, brand elements work as clue to consumers to recall and recognize the brand.  Proper integration of both strong and weak brand elements of a brand contribute to brand equity, which has been focused here through some literature reviews.

  • Design driven innovation as a differentiation strategy : In the context of automotive industry
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Technology Management & Innovation. - 0718-2724. ; 10:2, s. 24-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Though, in the automotive industry, technology is considered as a source of innovation and development, emerging change in consumer perception has brought industry focus on design. Evolution of this industry is closely related to the convergence of technology and design. In such context, implication of design driven innovation strategy in the automotive industry has potential to be explored and to create sustained competitive advantage through balancing customers’ need, technological opportunities and product meaning. The aim of this paper is to give a holistic view of design driven innovation as a differentiation strategy in the automotive industry and its implication for strategic management through some relevant research reviews and empirical information. On the contrary, this research lacks detailed description on industry practice to provide greater breadth, since it attempts to correlate the strategic concept of design with the dynamic capability of a firm in that particular industry.

  • Global Responsiveness Through Online and Offline Value Adding
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Competitive International Strategy. - : Taylor & Francis. - 9781003054733
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • E-commerce has become an alternative to physical sales of many products. At the same time, customers often need direct contact with selling companies, not least regarding value creation connected to customized products. This chapter demonstrates how retailing firms in the video game industry may tackle price competition due to competitors’ scale effects. The competition reinforces a firm’s motivation to find a viable way to implement a global responsiveness strategy in terms of identifying an optimum combination of online and offline value adding. Thus, a retailer may handle price competition by carefully setting prices for its own products and aiming for customer responsiveness. In particular, effective responsiveness rests on value driven incentives. A retailer generally needs to create value for end customers and engage actors in the entire value chain. Also, the retailer needs to encourage the end customers themselves and motivate them to interact with the firm and other buyers.
