  • Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: eLife. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions.

  • DIII-D research advancing the physics basis for optimizing the tokamak approach to fusion energy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limits and regulate β N in the ITER baseline scenario, based on plasma response to probing 3D fields, was demonstrated. Finally, innovative tokamak operation using a negative triangularity shape showed many attractive features for future pilot plant operation.

    • Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale1–3. Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4–5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter4; identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation5,6; analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution7; describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity8,9; and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes8,10–18.

  • Ingår i: American Journal of Human Genetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9297 .- 1537-6605. ; 109:8, s. 1366-1387

    • A major challenge of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) is to translate phenotypic associations into biological insights. Here, we integrate a large GWAS on blood lipids involving 1.6 million individuals from five ancestries with a wide array of functional genomic datasets to discover regulatory mechanisms underlying lipid associations. We first prioritize lipid-associated genes with expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) colocalizations and then add chromatin interaction data to narrow the search for functional genes. Polygenic enrichment analysis across 697 annotations from a host of tissues and cell types confirms the central role of the liver in lipid levels and highlights the selective enrichment of adipose-specific chromatin marks in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides. Overlapping transcription factor (TF) binding sites with lipid-associated loci identifies TFs relevant in lipid biology. In addition, we present an integrative framework to prioritize causal variants at GWAS loci, producing a comprehensive list of candidate causal genes and variants with multiple layers of functional evidence. We highlight two of the prioritized genes, CREBRF and RRBP1, which show convergent evidence across functional datasets supporting their roles in lipid biology.

  • Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents' growth and development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 615:7954, s. 874-883

    • Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

  • Vertical Sandwich Gate-All-Around Field-Effect Transistors with Self-Aligned High-k Metal Gates and Small Effective-Gate-Length Variation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Electron Device Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 0741-3106 .- 1558-0563. ; 41:1, s. 8-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new type of vertical nanowire (NW)/nanosheet (NS) field-effect transistors (FETs), termed vertical sandwich gate-all-around (GAA) FETs (VSAFETs), is presented in this work. Moreover, an integration flow that is compatible with processes used in the mainstream industry is proposed for the VSAFETs. Si/SiGe epitaxy, isotropic quasi-atomic-layer etching (qALE), and gate replacement were used to fabricate pVSAFETs for the first time. Vertical GAA FETs with self-aligned high-k metal gates and a small effective-gate-length variation were obtained. Isotropic qALE, including Si-selective etching of SiGe, was developed to control the diameter/thickness of the NW/NS channels. NWs with a diameter of 10 nm and NSs with a thickness of 20 nm were successfully fabricated, and good device characteristics were obtained. Finally, the device performance was investigated and is discussed in this work. © 2019 IEEE.

  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

  • Intermediate-luminosity red transients : Spectrophotometric properties and connection to electron-capture supernova explosions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN 2008S. These events have a rise time that is less than 15 days and absolute peak magnitudes of between −11.5 and −14.5 mag. Their pseudo-bolometric light curves peak in the range 0.5–9.0 × 1040 erg s−1 and their total radiated energies are on the order of (0.3–3) × 1047 erg. After maximum brightness, the light curves show a monotonic decline or a plateau, resembling those of faint supernovae IIL or IIP, respectively. At late phases, the light curves flatten, roughly following the slope of the 56Co decay. If the late-time power source is indeed radioactive decay, these transients produce 56Ni masses on the order of 10−4 to 10−3 M⊙. The spectral energy distribution of our ILRT sample, extending from the optical to the mid-infrared (MIR) domain, reveals a clear IR excess soon after explosion and non-negligible MIR emission at very late phases. The spectra show prominent H lines in emission with a typical velocity of a few hundred km s−1, along with Ca II features. In particular, the [Ca II] λ7291,7324 doublet is visible at all times, which is a characteristic feature for this family of transients. The identified progenitor of SN 2008S, which is luminous in archival Spitzer MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We propose the explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch star forming an electron-capture supernova as a plausible explanation for these events.

  • The Cardamine enshiensis genome reveals whole genome duplication and insight into selenium hyperaccumulation and tolerance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cell Discovery. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2056-5968. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cardamine enshiensis is a well-known selenium (Se)-hyperaccumulating plant. Se is an essential trace element associated with many health benefits. Despite its critical importance, genomic information of this species is limited. Here, we report a chromosome-level genome assembly of C. enshiensis, which consists of 443.4 Mb in 16 chromosomes with a scaffold N50 of 24 Mb. To elucidate the mechanism of Se tolerance and hyperaccumulation in C. enshiensis, we generated and analyzed a dataset encompassing genomes, transcriptomes, and metabolomes. The results reveal that flavonoid, glutathione, and lignin biosynthetic pathways may play important roles in protecting C. enshiensis from stress induced by Se. Hi-C analysis of chromatin interaction patterns showed that the chromatin of C. enshiensis is partitioned into A and B compartments, and strong interactions between the two telomeres of each chromosome were correlated with histone modifications, epigenetic markers, DNA methylation, and RNA abundance. Se supplementation could affect the 3D chromatin architecture of C. enshiensis at the compartment level. Genes with compartment changes after Se treatment were involved in selenocompound metabolism, and genes in regions with topologically associated domain insulation participated in cellular responses to Se, Se binding, and flavonoid biosynthesis. This multiomics research provides molecular insight into the mechanism underlying Se tolerance and hyperaccumulation in C. enshiensis.

  • Study of silicon nitride inner spacer formation in process of gate-all-around nano-transistors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nanomaterials. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-4991. ; 10:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stacked SiGe/Si structures are widely used as the units for gate-all-around nanowire transistors (GAA NWTs) which are a promising candidate beyond fin field effective transistors (FinFETs) technologies in near future. These structures deal with a several challenges brought by the shrinking of device dimensions. The preparation of inner spacers is one of the most critical processes for GAA nano-scale transistors. This study focuses on two key processes: Inner spacer film conformal deposition and accurate etching. The results show that low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) silicon nitride has a good film filling effect; a precise and controllable silicon nitride inner spacer structure is prepared by using an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) tool and a new gas mixtures of CH2F2/CH4/O2/Ar. Silicon nitride inner spacer etch has a high etch selectivity ratio, exceeding 100:1 to Si and more than 30:1 to SiO2. High anisotropy with an excellent vertical/lateral etch ratio exceeding 80:1 is successfully demonstrated. It also provides a solution to the key process challenges of nano-transistors beyond 5 nm node. © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

  • Molecules of senescent glial cells differentiate Alzheimer's disease from ageing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. - 0022-3050. ; 94:7, s. 550-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Ageing is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is accompanied by cellular senescence and thousands of transcriptional changes in the brain. Objectives To identify the biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that could help differentiate healthy ageing from neurodegenerative processes. Methods Cellular senescence and ageing-related biomarkers were assessed in primary astrocytes and postmortem brains by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. The biomarkers were measured in CSF samples from the China Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disorder Initiative cohort using Elisa and the multiplex Luminex platform. Results The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors p16/ p21-positive senescent cells in human postmortem brains were predominantly astrocytes and oligodendrocyte lineage cells, which accumulated in AD brains. CCL2, YKL-40, HGF, MIF, S100B, TSP2, LCN2 and serpinA3 are biomarkers closely related to human glial senescence. Moreover, we discovered that most of these molecules, which were upregulated in senescent glial cells, were significantly elevated in the AD brain. Notably, CSF YKL-40 (beta=0.5412, p<0.0001) levels were markedly elevated with age in healthy older individuals, whereas HGF (beta=0.2732, p=0.0001), MIF (beta=0.33714, p=0.0017) and TSP2 (beta=0.1996, p=0.0297) levels were more susceptible to age in older individuals with AD pathology. We revealed that YKL-40, TSP2 and serpinA3 were useful biomarkers for discriminating patients with AD from CN individuals and non-AD patients. Discussion Our findings demonstrated the different patterns of CSF biomarkers related to senescent glial cells between normal ageing and AD, implicating these biomarkers could identify the road node in healthy path off to neurodegeneration and improve the accuracy of clinical AD diagnosis, which would help promote healthy ageing.

  • Design and optimization of a novel phase change photovoltaic thermal utilization structure for building envelope
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Renewable energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0960-1481 .- 1879-0682. ; 218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The building envelope is of great significance for building thermal comfort, and photovoltaic heat (PV/T) can be effectively utilized through phase change heat storage technology to reduce heating energy consumption. In this paper, a phase change heat storage structure with subzone rotation is proposed for the building envelope. A numerical model of a triplex-tube LHTES unit is established by using the enthalpy-porosity method and verified by experimental data. The study employs the Taguchi method to select rotation speed in different regions and fin/tube wall material as variables. The effects of different variables on heat release rate and solidification time are investigated, and the interaction of each parameter on solidification performance is analyzed through signal-to-noise ratio. The findings indicate that when the inner and outer tube speeds are 0.3 rpm and 0.5 rpm, respectively, compared to the initial model where both inner and outer tube speeds are 0.1 rpm, the average temperature response rate and the average heat release rate are increased by 51.47% and 61.04%, respectively. Meanwhile, the solidification time is shortened by 40.49%. However, the release of the total heat is reduced by 0.66%. The study concludes that increasing rotation speed or solidification consistency of PCM in different areas is of great value in enhancing overall solidification performance. Finally, the specific effect of increasing regional rotation speed on the solidification process is studied through temperature/flow rate monitoring in the unit.

  • Real-time Characterization Model of Carbon Emissions Based on Land-use Status : A Case Study of Xi'an City, China
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The traditional carbon accounting method, with a lag of over 2 years due to the release time of statistical yearbooks, impedes timely policy adjustments in urban planning and management. Hence, there is an urgent need to establish a real-time carbon emissions characterization model. Xi'an which has a complex land-use structure was chosen as the study site and its carbon emissions were calculated using the Emission Factor Method. The GIS-Kernel Density (KD) model was constructed, and land use was subdivided based on Point of Interest (POI) and road network data. Based on the results of carbon emissions accounting and land-use subdivision, a Multilayer perceptron (MLP) model was established. The remote sensing (RS) images of Xi'an underwent supervised classification, and the carbon emissions of Xi'an were characterized based on the subdivision results and MLP model. The results show that: (1) The accuracy of the characterization model is more than 90%, and with the improvement of RS technology, the accuracy will be further improved; (2) Compared with the existing model, this model can real time reflect the spatial distribution of carbon emissions; (3) Atmospheric emission of Xi'an will be 41.92 million tons at the end of 2022, a decrease of 2.80 million tons compared with that of 2020, but an increase of 0.33 million tons from 2021. The north of Xi'an and periphery of the central urban area are the main carbon sink loss areas, while the east of Xi'an and north foot of the Qinling Mountains are carbon sink growth areas.

    • Background: Morphology of the human cerebral cortex differs across psychiatric disorders, with neurobiology and developmental origins mostly undetermined. Deviations in the tangential growth of the cerebral cortex during pre/perinatal periods may be reflected in individual variations in cortical surface area later in life. Methods: Interregional profiles of group differences in surface area between cases and controls were generated using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging from 27,359 individuals including those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and high general psychopathology (through the Child Behavior Checklist). Similarity of interregional profiles of group differences in surface area and prenatal cell-specific gene expression was assessed. Results: Across the 11 cortical regions, group differences in cortical area for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, and Child Behavior Checklist were dominant in multimodal association cortices. The same interregional profiles were also associated with interregional profiles of (prenatal) gene expression specific to proliferative cells, namely radial glia and intermediate progenitor cells (greater expression, larger difference), as well as differentiated cells, namely excitatory neurons and endothelial and mural cells (greater expression, smaller difference). Finally, these cell types were implicated in known pre/perinatal risk factors for psychosis. Genes coexpressed with radial glia were enriched with genes implicated in congenital abnormalities, birth weight, hypoxia, and starvation. Genes coexpressed with endothelial and mural genes were enriched with genes associated with maternal hypertension and preterm birth. Conclusions: Our findings support a neurodevelopmental model of vulnerability to mental illness whereby prenatal risk factors acting through cell-specific processes lead to deviations from typical brain development during pregnancy.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science & Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1005-0302. ; 139, s. 59-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High corrosion resistance of alloys is essential for their structural applications; however, most alloys suffer from degradation of their corrosion resistance with the increasing acidity of their surround-ings. Nonetheless, we developed a series of medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) in this work, which ex-hibit high strength, superior fracture toughness and ultra-high corrosion resistance, outperforming the variety of corrosion resistant alloys hitherto reported. Most interestingly, our MEAs exhibit an unusual anti-corrosion behavior and their corrosion resistance increases with acidity in Cl- containing solutions. Through extensive thermodynamic calculations, density functional theory (DFT) simulations and experi-ments, we reveal that the unusual anti-corrosion behavior of our MEAs can be attributed to their surface chemical complexity, which facilitates the physio-chemical-absorption of H2O and O 2 and thus the rapid formation of metastable medium entropy passive films that contain the lowest amount of defects, as compared to the passive films on conventional alloys reported in the literature.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 582:7810, s. 73-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High blood cholesterol is typically considered a feature of wealthy western countries1,2. However, dietary and behavioural determinants of blood cholesterol are changing rapidly throughout the world3 and countries are using lipid-lowering medications at varying rates. These changes can have distinct effects on the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, which have different effects on human health4,5. However, the trends of HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels over time have not been previously reported in a global analysis. Here we pooled 1,127 population-based studies that measured blood lipids in 102.6 million individuals aged 18 years and older to estimate trends from 1980 to 2018 in mean total, non-HDL and HDL cholesterol levels for 200 countries. Globally, there was little change in total or non-HDL cholesterol from 1980 to 2018. This was a net effect of increases in low- and middle-income countries, especially in east and southeast Asia, and decreases in high-income western countries, especially those in northwestern Europe, and in central and eastern Europe. As a result, countries with the highest level of non-HDL cholesterol—which is a marker of cardiovascular risk—changed from those in western Europe such as Belgium, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Malta in 1980 to those in Asia and the Pacific, such as Tokelau, Malaysia, The Philippines and Thailand. In 2017, high non-HDL cholesterol was responsible for an estimated 3.9 million (95% credible interval 3.7 million–4.2 million) worldwide deaths, half of which occurred in east, southeast and south Asia. The global repositioning of lipid-related risk, with non-optimal cholesterol shifting from a distinct feature of high-income countries in northwestern Europe, north America and Australasia to one that affects countries in east and southeast Asia and Oceania should motivate the use of population-based policies and personal interventions to improve nutrition and enhance access to treatment throughout the world.

    • Early detection has the potential to reduce cancer mortality, but an effective screening test must demonstrate asymptomatic cancer detection years before conventional diagnosis in a longitudinal study. In the Taizhou Longitudinal Study (TZL), 123,115 healthy subjects provided plasma samples for long-term storage and were then monitored for cancer occurrence. Here we report the preliminary results of PanSeer, a noninvasive blood test based on circulating tumor DNA methylation, on TZL plasma samples from 605 asymptomatic individuals, 191 of whom were later diagnosed with stomach, esophageal, colorectal, lung or liver cancer within four years of blood draw. We also assay plasma samples from an additional 223 cancer patients, plus 200 primary tumor and normal tissues. We show that PanSeer detects five common types of cancer in 88% (95% CI: 80–93%) of post-diagnosis patients with a specificity of 96% (95% CI: 93–98%), We also demonstrate that PanSeer detects cancer in 95% (95% CI: 89–98%) of asymptomatic individuals who were later diagnosed, though future longitudinal studies are required to confirm this result. These results demonstrate that cancer can be non-invasively detected up to four years before current standard of care.

    • Due to the intermittency and discontinuity of solar energy, thermal energy storage (TES) using phase change materials (PCMs) is generally required to ensure stable operation in solar heating systems (SHS) during winter. This paper presents the design of a TES unit with different horizontal metal foam filling ratios (60%–100%), and simulations of thermal characteristics, such as complete melting time and heat storage capacity by numerical method. Based on the heating demands of an office building in Xi'an, TES units are combined in parallel and economic indexes are calculated based on static evaluation method, including initial investment and investment payback period. Novelty, the contribution of gradient microstructure to the phase transition process is evaluated from thermophysical properties and economy. Results show that the TES unit with a filling ratio of 90% possesses the shortest complete melting time of 5310 s, which is 87.56% shorter than that of a TES unit with pure PCM. Finally, economic assessments of the engineering application of the partially filled metal foam structure are carried out, and it is determined that the SHS with the TES system of 90% filling ratio requires the least number of 548 TES units, with a payback period of three heating seasons.

  • The mass of β Pictoris c from β Pictoris b orbital motion
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. We aim to demonstrate that the presence and mass of an exoplanet can now be effectively derived from the astrometry of another exoplanet.Methods. We combined previous astrometry of β Pictoris b with a new set of observations from the GRAVITY interferometer. The orbital motion of β Pictoris b is fit using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations in Jacobi coordinates. The inner planet, β Pictoris c, was also reobserved at a separation of 96 mas, confirming the previous orbital estimations.Results. From the astrometry of planet b only, we can (i) detect the presence of β Pictoris c and (ii) constrain its mass to 10.04(-3.10)(+4.53) M-Jup. If one adds the astrometry of β Pictoris c, the mass is narrowed down to 9.15(-1.06)(+1.08) M-Jup. The inclusion of radial velocity measurements does not affect the orbital parameters significantly, but it does slightly decrease the mass estimate to 8.89(-0.75)(+0.75) M-Jup. With a semimajor axis of 2.68 +/- 0.02 au, a period of 1221 +/- 15 days, and an eccentricity of 0.32 +/- 0.02, the orbital parameters of β Pictoris c are now constrained as precisely as those of β Pictoris b. The orbital configuration is compatible with a high-order mean-motion resonance (7:1). The impact of the resonance on the planets' dynamics would then be negligible with respect to the secular perturbations, which might have played an important role in the eccentricity excitation of the outer planet.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI), as opposed to engaging students in inquiry learning experiences, are included in science education reform documents around the world. However, little is known about what students have learned about NOSI during their pre-college school years. The purpose of this large-scale follow-up international project (i.e. 32 countries and regions, spanning six continents and including 3917 students for the high school sample) was to collect data on what exiting high school students have learned about NOSI. Additionally, the study investigated changes in 12th grade students' NOSI understandings compared to seventh grade (i.e. 20 countries and regions) students' understandings from a prior investigation [Lederman et al. (2019). An international collaborative investigation of beginning seventh grade students' understandings of scientific inquiry: Establishing a baseline. Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 56(4), 486-515. ]. This study documents and discusses graduating high school students' understandings and compares their understandings to seventh grade students' understandings of the same aspects of scientific inquiry for each country. It is important to note that collecting data from each of the 130+ countries globally was not feasible. Similarly, it was not possible to collect data from every region of each country. A concerted effort was made, however, to provide a relatively representative picture of each country and the world.

  • Carbon Black Nanoparticle/Polydopamine-Coated Core-Spun Yarns for Flexible Strain Sensors
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Nano Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2574-0970. ; 5:11, s. 16996-17003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A smart and flexible textile strain sensor was developed based on a commercial core-spun yarn coated with carbon black (CB) nanoparticles and polydopamine (PDA). The morphology of the textile was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the distribution of CB and self-polymerized PDA was observed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed the applicable temperature range of the strain sensor. The smart textile showed an outstanding strain sensor response range up to 450%, and its mechanical properties were only slightly reduced as compared to the original textile. The cyclic strain sensor behavior of the smart textile was investigated by stretching the textile 100% for 100 cycles, yielding a stable and durable output electrical signal. Application tests for various human motions were also performed. Finally, two mathematical equations based on tunneling theory were proposed to accurately predict the electrical signal during stretching and to reveal the fundamental properties of the textile. Our findings clearly expand the current knowledge of strain sensors.

  • The long-lived Type IIn SN 2015da : Infrared echoes and strong interaction within an extended massive shell star star star
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 635
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report the results of the first similar to four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the Type IIn supernova SN 2015da (also known as PSN J13522411+3941286, or iPTF16tu). The supernova exploded in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5337 in a relatively highly extinguished environment. The transient showed prominent narrow Balmer lines in emission at all times and a slow rise to maximum in all bands. In addition, early observations performed by amateur astronomers give a very well-constrained explosion epoch. The observables are consistent with continuous interaction between the supernova ejecta and a dense and extended H-rich circumstellar medium. The presence of such an extended and dense medium is difficult to reconcile with standard stellar evolution models, since the metallicity at the position of SN 2015da seems to be slightly subsolar. Interaction is likely the mechanism powering the light curve, as confirmed by the analysis of the pseudo bolometric light curve, which gives a total radiated energy greater than or similar to 10(51) erg. Modeling the light curve in the context of a supernova shock breakout through a dense circumstellar medium allowed us to infer the mass of the prexisting gas to be similar or equal to 8 M-circle dot, with an extreme mass-loss rate for the progenitor star similar or equal to 0.6 M-circle dot yr(-1), suggesting that most of the circumstellar gas was produced during multiple eruptive events. Near- and mid-infrared observations reveal a fluxexcess in these domains, similar to those observed in SN 2010jl and other interacting transients, likely due to preexisting radiatively heated dust surrounding the supernova. By modeling the infrared excess, we infer a mass greater than or similar to 0.4 x 10(-3) M-circle dot for the dust.

  • Engineering Lattice Oxygen Activation of Iridium Clusters Stabilized on Amorphous Bimetal Borides Array for Oxygen Evolution Reaction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 60:52, s. 27126-27134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts requires significant advances in material design and in-depth understanding for water electrolysis. Herein, we report iridium clusters stabilized surface reconstructed oxyhydroxides on amorphous metal borides array, achieving an ultralow overpotential of 178 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for OER in alkaline medium. The coupling of iridium clusters induced the formation of high valence cobalt species and Ir–O–Co bridge between iridium and oxyhydroxides at the atomic scale, engineering lattice oxygen activation and non-concerted proton-electron transfer to trigger multiple active sites for intrinsic pH-dependent OER activity. The lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) was confirmed by in situ 18O isotope labeling mass spectrometry and chemical recognition of negative peroxo-like species. Theoretical simulations reveal that the OER performance on this catalyst is intrinsically dominated by LOM pathway, facilitating the reaction kinetics. This work not only paves an avenue for the rational design of electrocatalysts, but also serves the fundamental insights into the lattice oxygen participation for promising OER application.

  • Differential and shared genetic effects on kidney function between diabetic and non-diabetic individuals
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 5:1, s. 580-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) can progress to kidney failure. Risk factors include genetics and diabetes mellitus (DM), but little is known about their interaction. We conducted genome-wide association meta-analyses for estimated GFR based on serum creatinine (eGFR), separately for individuals with or without DM (nDM = 178,691, nnoDM = 1,296,113). Our genome-wide searches identified (i) seven eGFR loci with significant DM/noDM-difference, (ii) four additional novel loci with suggestive difference and (iii) 28 further novel loci (including CUBN) by allowing for potential difference. GWAS on eGFR among DM individuals identified 2 known and 27 potentially responsible loci for diabetic kidney disease. Gene prioritization highlighted 18 genes that may inform reno-protective drug development. We highlight the existence of DM-only and noDM-only effects, which can inform about the target group, if respective genes are advanced as drug targets. Largely shared effects suggest that most drug interventions to alter eGFR should be effective in DM and noDM.

  • Atomic origins of the plastic deformation micro-mechanisms of ?/?? : FeCoNiAlTi high-entropy alloys
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International journal of plasticity. - : Elsevier BV. - 0749-6419 .- 1879-2154. ; 158, s. 103439-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma/gamma' FeCoNiAlTi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) break the strength-ductility trade-off and possess an excellent combination of strength and ductility. However, lack of atomic-level understanding of plastic deformation behaviors restricts the exploration of full capacities of the FeCoNiAlTi HEAs. By computing the generalized stacking fault energies (GSFEs) of the gamma and gamma' phases, the relationships between planar stacking faults and work-hardening capacities, and the effect of chemical concentration and grain orientation on the deformation mechanisms were explored in depth for the FeCoNiAlTi HEAs. Our results demonstrate that the multicomponent nature lowers the GSFEs of the matrix but enhances those of the precipitate to achieve the strength-ductility balance of the HEA. An active factor (epsilon) defined as gamma isf/gamma apb (gamma isf: intrinsic stacking fault energy, gamma apb: anti-phase boundary energy) was introduced to bridge activation of microbands (MBs) and planar stacking faults in the gamma/gamma' alloys. Tuning a suitable low epsilon around 0.2 is an efficient strategy for acquiring the extended MBs-induced plasticity. Analyzing the individual/synergetic contribution of the principal elements to the GSFEs-related properties, we find that increasing the amount of Co and Ti promotes the strength-ductility balance and facilitates the MB activation by altering the GSFEs of both gamma and gamma'. Based on our comprehensive analysis, it is concluded that raising the Co/Fe ratio or lowing the Al/Ti ratio benefits the achievement of the desired mechanical properties of the FeCoNiAlTi HEA.

  • Excess electronic recoil events in XENON1T
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 102:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report results from searches for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the XENONIT detector. With an exposure of 0.65 tonne-years and an unprecedentedly low background rate of 76 +/- 2(stat) events/(tonne x year x keV) between 1 and 30 keV, the data enable one of the most sensitive searches for solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment using solar neutrinos, and bosonic dark matter. An excess over known backgrounds is observed at low energies and most prominent between 2 and 3 keV. The solar axion model has a 3.4 sigma significance, and a three-dimensional 90% confidence surface is reported for axion couplings to electrons, photons, and nucleons. This surface is inscribed in the cuboid defined by g(ae) < 3.8 x 10(-12), g(ae)g(an)(eff) < 4.8 x 10(-18), and g(ae)g(a gamma) < 7.7 x 10(-22) GeV-1, and excludes either g(ae) = 0 or g(ae)g(a gamma) = g(ae)ge(an)(eff), = 0. The neutrino magnetic moment signal is similarly favored over background at 3.2 sigma, and a confidence interval of mu(nu) is an element of (1.4, 2.9) x 10(-11) mu(B) (90% C.L.) is reported. Both results are in strong tension with stellar constraints. The excess can also be explained by beta decays of tritium at 3.2 sigma significance with a corresponding tritium concentration in xenon of (6.2 +/- 2.0) x 10(-25) mol/mol. Such a trace amount can neither be confirmed nor excluded with current knowledge of its production and reduction mechanisms. The significances of the solar axion and neutrino magnetic moment hypotheses arc decreased to 2.0 sigma and 0.9 sigma, respectively, if an unconstrained tritium component is included in the fitting. With respect to bosonic dark matter, the excess favors a monoenergetic peak at (2.3 +/- 0.2) keV (68% C.L.) with a 3.0 sigma global (4.0 sigma local) significance over background. This analysis sets the most restrictive direct constraints to date on pseudoscalar and vector bosonic dark matter for most masses between 1 and 210 keV/c(2). We also consider the possibility that Ar-37 may be present in the detector, yielding a 2.82 keV peak from electron capture. Contrary to tritium, the Ar-37 concentration can be tightly constrained and is found to be negligible.

  • Efficient methods with polynomial complexity to determine the reversibility of general 1D linear cellular automata over Zp
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-0255 .- 1872-6291. ; 594, s. 163-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The property of reversibility is quite meaningful for the classic theoreticabl computer science model, cellular automata. This paper focuses on the reversibility of general one-dimensional (1D) linear cellular automata (LCA), under null boundary conditions over the finite field Zp. Although the existing approaches have split the reversibility challenge into two sub-problems: calculate the period of reversibility first, then verify the reversibility in a period, they are still exponential in the size of the CA's neighborhood. In this paper, we use two efficient algorithms with polynomial complexity to tackle these two challenges, making it possible to solve large-scale reversible LCA, which substantially enlarge its applicability. Finally, we provide an interesting perspective to inversely generate a 1D LCA from a given period of reversibility.
