  • Shape Coexistence in the Neutron-Deficient Even-Even Hg182-188 Isotopes Studied via Coulomb Excitation.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 112:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85 MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0+ states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules approach. Results show that the ground state is slightly deformed and of oblate nature, while a larger deformation for the excited 0+ state was noted in Hg182,184. The results are compared to beyond mean field and interacting-boson based models and interpreted within a two-state mixing model. Partial agreement with the model calculations was obtained. The presence of two different structures in the light even-mass mercury isotopes that coexist at low excitation energy is firmly established.

  • Spin-gap Isomer in 96Cd
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588. ; 381:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evidence has been obtained for the existence of the long predicted 16+ spin-gap isomer in 96Cd. The decay of the isomer was identified and studied following the use of an 850 MeV/u beam of 124Xe impinging on a Be target and the fragment recoil separator at the GSI Laboratory. Gamma decays from the fragments were detected using the RISING gamma ray array, in its stopped beam configuration, plus a silicon active stopper. The data obtained have been compared with shell model predictions, which indicate that the isoscalar neutron-proton interaction plays a key role in the formation of the isomer.

  • High-spin isomers in 96Ag : excitations across the Z=38 and Z=50, N=50 closed shells
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 84:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in (96)Ag were populated in fragmentation of an 850-MeV/u (124)Xe beam on a 4-g/cm(2) Be target. Three new high-spin isomers were identified and the structure of the populated states was investigated. The level scheme of (96)Ag was established, and a spin parity of (13(-)), (15(+)), and (19(+)) was assigned to the new isomeric states. Shell-model calculations were performed in various model spaces, including pi nu(p(1/2), g(9/2), f(5/2), p(3/2)) and the large-scale shell-model space pi nu(gds), to account for the observed parity changing M2 and E3 transitions from the (13(-)) isomer and the E2 and E4 transitions from the (19(+)) core-excited isomer, respectively. The calculated level schemes and reduced transition strengths are found to be in very good agreement with the experiment.

  • Observation of a new high-spin isomer in Pd-94
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 82:6, s. 061309-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A second gamma-decaying high-spin isomeric state, with a half-life of 197(22) ns, has been identified in the N = Z + 2 nuclide Pd-94 as part of a stopped-beam Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI (RISING) experiment. Weisskopf estimates were used to establish a tentative spin/parity of 19(-), corresponding to the maximum possible spin of a negative parity state in the restricted (p(1/2), g(9/2)) model space of empirical shell model calculations. The reproduction of the E3 decay properties of the isomer required an extension of the model space to include the f (5/2) and p(3/2) orbitals using the CD-Bonn potential. This is the first time that such an extension has been required for a high-spin isomer in the vicinity of Sn-100 and reveals the importance of such orbits for understanding the decay properties of high-spin isomers in this region. However, despite the need for the extended model space for the E3 decay, the dominant configuration for the 19(-) state remains (p p(1/2)(-1)g(9/2)(-3))(11)circle times(nu g(9/2)(-2))(8). The half-life of the known, 14(+), isomer was remeasured and yielded a value of 499(13) ns.

  • Exotic Nuclear Studies Around and Below A=100
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 4th International Conference on Proton Emitting Nuclei and Related Topics, PROCON2011. - : AIP. - 9780735409835 ; 1409, s. 19-24
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A RISING experiment with an aim to study exotic Cd nuclei was carried out at GSI-FRS facility. Some preliminary results from this experiment are presented here. In particular, the β decay of 96Cd to 96Ag revealed the existence of a high spin isomer predicted a few decades ago. In this context, the structures of both these nuclei are discussed. Shell model calculations using the Gross-Frenkel interaction are used to interpret the results.

  • Coulomb excitation of Na-29,Na-30: Mapping the borders of the island of inversion
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 89:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nuclear shell evolution in neutron-rich Na nuclei around N = 20 was studied by determining reduced transition probabilities, i.e., B(E2) and B(M1) values, in order to map the border of the island of inversion. To this end Coulomb-excitation experiments, employing radioactive Na-29,Na-30 beams with a final beam energy of 2.85 MeV/nucleon, were performed at REX-ISOLDE, CERN. De-excitation gamma rays were detected by the MINIBALL gamma-ray spectrometer in coincidence with scattered particles in a segmented Si detector. Transition probabilities to excited states were deduced. The measured B(E2) values agree well with shell-model predictions, supporting the idea that in the Na isotopic chain the ground-state wave function contains significant intruder admixture already at N = 18, with N = 19 having an almost pure two-particle-two-hole deformed ground-state configuration.

  • 16(+) Spin-Gap Isomer in (96)Cd
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 107:17, s. 172502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A beta-decaying high-spin isomer in (96)Cd, with a half-life T(1/2) = 0.29(-0.10)(+0.11) s, has been established in a stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at GSI (RISING) experiment. The nuclei were produced using the fragmentation of a primary beam of (124)Xe on a (9)Be target. From the half-life and the observed gamma decays in the daughter nucleus, (96)Ag, we conclude that the beta-decaying state is the long predicted 16(+) "spin-gap'' isomer. Shell-model calculations, using the Gross-Frenkel interaction and the pi nu(p(1/2,)g(9/2)) model space, show that the isoscalar component of the neutron-proton interaction is essential to explain the origin of the isomer. Core excitations across the N = Z = 50 gaps and the Gamow-Teller strength, Bd(GT) distributions have been studied via large-scale shell-model calculations using the pi nu(g, d, s) model space to compare with the experimental B(GT) value obtained from the half-life of the isomer.

  • Influence of the np interaction on the beta decay of Pd-94
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 86:4, s. 041301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results from stopped beam rare isotope spectroscopic investigations at the GSI (RISING) experiment based on the detection of gamma-ray transitions following the beta decay of Pd-94. A comparison between the measured low-lying level scheme of Rh-94 and the prediction from shell-model calculations reveals the important roles of the g(7/2) and g(9/2) orbitals in explaining the structural features. The low values of the Gamow-Teller strengths B(GT) can be attributed to the influence of the neutron-proton interaction, which gives rise to an increased seniority mixing for the nuclear states, thereby leading to a fragmentation of the strength to several daughter levels. These results provide further strong indications that Pd-94 resides in the middle of a structural transition region in the Pd isotopes as the N = Z line is approached.

    • In 98 Cd a new high-energy isomeric γ -ray transition was identified, which confirms previous spin-parity assignments and enables for the first time the measurement of the E 2 and E 4 strength for the two decay branches of the isomer. Preliminary results on the 98 Cd high-excitation level scheme are presented. A comparison to shell-model calculations as well as implications for the nuclear structure around 100 Sn are discussed.

  • Lifetime measurements in neutron-rich Co-63,Co-65 isotopes using the AGATA demonstrator
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 88:4, s. 044326-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetimes of the low-lying (11/2(-)) states in Co-63,Co-65 have been measured employing the recoil distance doppler shift method (RDDS) with the AGATA gamma-ray array and the PRISMA mass spectrometer. These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a U-238 target with a beam of Ni-64. The experimental B(E2) reduced transition probabilities for Co-63,Co-65 are well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations that predict a constant trend of the B(E2) values up to the N = 40 Co-67 isotope.

  • Isomer and Beta-decay Spectroscopy of Tz=1 Isotopes Below the N=Z=50 Shell Gap
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588. ; 312:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The RISING setup at the GSI-FRS facility was used to investigate the isomer and beta decays in N~Z~50 Cd, Ag and Pd isotopes. A preliminary analysis of the data has revealed new results on the Tz=1, 94Pd, 96Ag and 98Cd isotopes. In 94Pd a new high-spin isomer was observed, whilst in 96Ag 3 new isomeric states were identified, including core-excited states. In 98Cd a new high-energy isomeric γ-ray transition is observed, thus enabling us to confirm the previous spin assignment for the core-excited 12+ isomer.

  • Isospin Symmetry in the sd Shell: Transition Strengths in the Neutron-deficient sd Shell Nucleus 33Ar
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 90:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reduced transition strengths of the deexciting transitions from the first two excited states in 33Ar were measured in a relativistic Coulomb excitation experiment at the GSI Helmholtz center. The radioactive ion beam was produced by fragmentation of a primary 36Ar beam on a 9Be target followed by the selection of the reaction product of interest via the GSI Fragment Separator. The 33Ar beam hit a secondary 197Au target with an energy of approximately 145 MeV/nucleon. An array of high-purity germanium cluster detectors and large-volume BaF2 scintillator detectors were employed for γ -ray spectroscopy at the secondary target position. The Lund-York-Cologne Calorimeter was used to track the outgoing ions and to identify the nuclear reaction channels. For the two lowest energy excited states of 33Ar the reduced transition strengths have been determined. With these first results the Tz = −3/2 nucleus 33Ar is now, together with 21Na (Tz = −1/2), the only neutron-deficient odd-A sd shell nucleus in which experimental transition strengths are available. The experimental values are compared to results of shell-model calculations which describe simultaneously mirror-energy differences and transition-strength values of mirror pairs in the sd shell in a consistent way.

  • Coulomb excitation of In-107
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 87:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The radioactive isotope In-107 was studied using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Two gamma rays were observed during the experiment, corresponding to the low-lying 11/2(+) and 3/2(-)states. The reduced transition probability of the 11/2(+) state was determined with the semiclassical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The result is discussed in comparison to large-scale shell-model calculations, previous unified-model calculations, and earlier Coulomb excitation measurements in the odd-mass In isotopes. • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 48:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The radioactive isotope Sn-107 was studied using Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. This is the lightest odd-Sn nucleus examined using this technique. The reduced transition probability of the lowest-lying 3/2(+) state was measured and is compared to shell-model predictions based on several sets of single-neutron energies relative to Sn-100. Similar to the transition probabilities for the 2(+) states in the neutron-deficient even-even Sn nuclei, the measured value is underestimated by shell-model calculations. Part of the strength may be recovered by considering the ordering of the d(5/2) and g(7/2) single-neutron states.

  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 47:2, s. 25-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of the nucleus Er-170 have been studied by Coulomb excitation using the GASP gamma-ray detector system at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The ground-state band along with a low-lying K-pi = 0(+) band and gamma-vibrational band were populated during the experiment. Based on the measured gamma-ray yields, a set of interband and intraband matrix elements has been extracted using the Coulomb excitation code GOSIA. The resulting E2 matrix elements are compared to collective model predictions.

  • Excitation strengths in Sn-109: Single-neutron and collective excitations near Sn-100
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 86:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A set of B(E2) values for the low-lying excited states in the radioactive isotope Sn-109 were deduced from a Coulomb excitation experiment. The 2.87-MeV/u radioactive beam was produced at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN and was incident on a secondary Ni-58 target. The B(E2) values were determined using the known 2(+) -> 0(+) reduced transition probability in Ni-58 as normalization with the semiclassical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The transition probabilities are compared to shell-model calculations based on a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction and the predictions of a simple core-excitation model. This measurement represents the first determination of multiple B(E2) values in a light Sn nucleus using the Coulomb excitation technique with low-energy radioactive beams. The results provide constraints for the single-neutron states relative to Sn-100 and also indicate the importance of both single-neutron and collective excitations in the light Sn isotopes.

  • Coulomb excitation of Mg-31
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 700:3-4, s. 181-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ground state properties of Mg-31 indicate a change of nuclear shape at N = 19 with a deformed J(pi) = 1/2(+) intruder state as a ground state, implying that Mg-31 is part of the "island of inversion". The collective properties of excited states were the subject of a Coulomb excitation experiment at REX-ISOLDE, CERN, employing a radioactive Mg-31 beam. De-excitation gamma-rays were detected by the MINIBALL gamma-spectrometer in coincidence with scattered particles in a segmented Si-detector. The level scheme of Mg-3I was extended. Spin and parity assignment of the 945 keV state yielded 5/2(+) and its de-excitation is dominated by a strong collective M1 transition. Comparison of the transition probabilities of Mg-30,Mg-31,Mg-32 establishes that for the N = 19 magnesium isotope not only the ground state but also excited states are largely dominated by a deformed pf intruder configuration.
