  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose some fundamental requirements for the treatment of negative particles, positive/negative polar questions, and negative propositions, as they occur in dialogue with questions. We offer a view of negation that combines aspects of alternative semantics, intuitionist negation, and situation semantics. We formalize the account in TTR (a version of type theory with records) [6,8]. Central to our claim is that negative and positive propositions should be distinguished and that in order to do this they should be defined in terms of types rather than possible worlds. This is in contrast to [10] where negative propositions are identified in terms of the syntactic or morphological properties of the sentences which introduce them.

  • Using dependent record types in clarification ellipsis
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the sixth workshop on the semantics and pragmatics of dialogue, ed. by Johan Bos, Mary Ellen Foster and Colin Matheson, Edinburgh University. ; , s. 45-52
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a sketch of a formulation of an analysis of clarification ellipsis using dependent record types as they have been developed in Martin-Löf type theory. Record types provide a semantic formalism which at the same time as containing the normal paraphernalia of semantics (functions, binding, quantification) also have strong similarities to typed feature structures as used in HPSG. We argue that this gives us the kind of tools we need to account for the interpretation of clarification ellipses which to a large extent need to be constructed from semantic, syntactic and phonological information about the utterance being clarified. Clarification ellipses thus motivate a radical kind of context dependence over and above compositional semantics. Their meanings need to be constructed by the manipulation of structured representations of previous utterances which include more than just semantic information.

  • Clarification, Ellipsis, and the Nature of Contextual Updates in Dialogue
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Linguistics and Philosophy. ; 27:3, s. 297-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper investigates an elliptical construction, Clarification Ellipsis, that occurs in dialogue. We suggest that this provides data that demonstrates that updates resulting from utterances cannot be defined in purely semantic terms, contrary to the prevailing assumptions of existing approaches to dynamic semantics. We offer a computationally oriented analysis of the resolution of ellipsis in certain cases of dialogue clarification. We show that this goes beyond standard techniques used in anaphora and ellipsis resolution and requires operations on highly structured, linguistically heterogeneous representations. We characterize these operations and the representations on which they operate. We offer an analysis couched in a version of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar combined with a theory of information states (IS) in dialogue. We sketch an algorithm for the process of utterance integration in ISs which leads to grounding or clarification. The account proposed here has direct applications to the theory of attitude reports, an issue which is explored briefly in the concluding remarks of the paper.

  • Dialogue management with linear logic: the role of metavariables in questions and clarifications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Traitement Automatique des Langues. - 1248-9433. ; 61:3, s. 43-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study the formalisation of a dialogue management system using proof-search on top of a linear logic. We argue that linear logic is the natural formalism to implement information-state dialogue management. We give particular attention to modelling question-answering sequences, including clarification requests, and argue that metavariables, arising from unification in the proof search, play a decisive role in providing a natural formalisation. We show that our framework is not only well suited from a theoretical perspective, but it is also suitable for implementation which we exemplify with a small scale implementation.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: FAIM/ISCA Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Multimodal Human Robot Interaction, 14-15 July 2018, Stockholm, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an exploratory scheme, which aims at investigating perceptual features that characterise laughables (the arguments laughter is related to) in dialogue context. We present the results of a preliminary study and sketch an updated questionnaire on laughables types and laughter functions aimed to be used for Amazon Mechanical Turk experiments. Furthermore we present preliminary programme for integrating laughter into spoken dialogue systems.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the current paper we investigate whether laughter can be object of clarification requests and what these clarification requests might be about. We use the range of possible clarification requests as diagnostics for the constitutive elements of the meaning conveyed, thereby testing existing hypotheses concerning the semantics of laughter.

  • Keck/NIRC2 L'-Band Imaging of Jovian-Mass Accreting Protoplanets around PDS 70
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-6256 .- 1538-3881. ; 159:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present L'-band imaging of the PDS 70 planetary system with Keck/NIRC2 using the new infrared pyramid wave front sensor. We detected both PDS 70 b and c in our images, as well as the front rim of the circumstellar disk. After subtracting off a model of the disk, we measured the astrometry and photometry of both planets. Placing priors based on the dynamics of the system, we estimated PDS 70 b to have a semimajor axis of au and PDS 70 c to have a semimajor axis of au (95% credible interval). We fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of both planets. For PDS 70 b, we were able to place better constraints on the red half of its SED than previous studies and inferred the radius of the photosphere to be 2–3 R Jup. The SED of PDS 70 c is less well constrained, with a range of total luminosities spanning an order of magnitude. With our inferred radii and luminosities, we used evolutionary models of accreting protoplanets to derive a mass of PDS 70 b between 2 and 4 M Jup and a mean mass accretion rate between 3 × 10−7 and 8 × 10−7 M Jup/yr. For PDS 70 c, we computed a mass between 1 and 3 M Jup and mean mass accretion rate between 1 × 10−7 and 5 × 10−7 M Jup/yr. The mass accretion rates imply dust accretion timescales short enough to hide strong molecular absorption features in both planets' SEDs.
