  • Assembly and succession of the phyllosphere microbiome and nutrient-cycling genes during plant community development in a glacier foreland
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environment International. - 0160-4120. ; 187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phyllosphere, particularly the leaf surface of plants, harbors a diverse range of microbiomes that play a vital role in the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. However, our understanding of microbial successions and their impact on functional genes during plant community development is limited. In this study, considering core and satellite microbial taxa, we characterized the phyllosphere microbiome and functional genes in various microhabitats (i.e., leaf litter, moss and plant leaves) across the succession of a plant community in a low-altitude glacier foreland. Our findings indicate that phyllosphere microbiomes and associated ecosystem stability increase during the succession of the plant community. The abundance of core taxa increased with plant community succession and was primarily governed by deterministic processes. In contrast, satellite taxa abundance decreased during plant community succession and was mainly governed by stochastic processes. The abundance of microbial functional genes (such as C, N, and P hydrolysis and fixation) in plant leaves generally increased during the plant community succession. However, in leaf litter and moss leaves, only a subset of functional genes (e.g., C fixation and degradation, and P mineralization) showed a tendency to increase with plant community succession. Ultimately, the community of both core and satellite taxa collaboratively influenced the characteristics of phyllosphere nutrient-cycling genes, leading to the diverse profiles and fluctuating abundance of various functional genes during plant community succession. These findings offer valuable insights into the phyllosphere microbiome and plant–microbe interactions during plant community development, advancing our understanding of the succession and functional significance of the phyllosphere microbial community.

  • A Review of Spatter in Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing: In Situ Detection, Generation, Effects, and Countermeasures
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Micromachines. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-666X. ; 13:8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spatter is an inherent, unpreventable, and undesired phenomenon in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing. Spatter behavior has an intrinsic correlation with the forming quality in L-PBF because it leads to metallurgical defects and the degradation of mechanical properties. This impact becomes more severe in the fabrication of large-sized parts during the multi-laser L-PBF process. Therefore, investigations of spatter generation and countermeasures have become more urgent. Although much research has provided insights into the melt pool, microstructure, and mechanical property, reviews of spatter in L-PBF are still limited. This work reviews the literature on the in situ detection, generation, effects, and countermeasures of spatter in L-PBF. It is expected to pave the way towards a novel generation of highly efficient and intelligent L-PBF systems.

  • Multi-Dimensional Polarized Modulation for Land Mobile Satellite Communications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2332-7731. ; 7:2, s. 383-397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, a novel multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) transmission scheme, called generalized polarized enhanced spatial modulation (GPESM), is proposed for dual-polarized land mobile satellite (LMS) communications. We first introduce the enhanced spatial modulation (ESM) technique for dual-polarized LMS communications, in which polarization dimension, spatial dimension and multiple signal constellations are used to transmit information and obtain substantial performance gain. Meanwhile, the theoretical upper bound for the average bit error probability (ABEP) of the proposed GPESM scheme is derived. In order to further improve the reliability of the system, we also propose two novel power allocation (PA) algorithms for GPESM system, which are the optimization-driven approximated max-min distance (AMMD)-based PA algorithm and the data-driven deep neural network (DNN)-based PA algorithm. To achieve an enhanced spatial diversity gain, we consider to apply a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to the GPESM system as a relay to assist in transmitting information. In this way, the user can receive the information transmitted by the satellite on one hand, and the information sent by the satellite via the RIS relay on the other hand. We also extend the above-mentioned two PA algorithms to the RIS-assisted GPESM systems. Our simulation results show that the RIS-assisted GPESM systems are capable of obtaining high bit error rate (BER) performance gain (up to 10 dB) compared to the standard GPESM system and two PA algorithms can further improve the performance to the systems.

  • White Paper on Broadband Connectivity in 6G
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This white paper explores the road to implementing broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, from extreme capacity with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps, to raising the typical data rates by orders-of-magnitude, to support broadband connectivity at railway speeds up to 1000 km/h. To achieve these goals, not only the terrestrial networks will be evolved but they will also be integrated with satellite networks, all facilitating autonomous systems and various interconnected structures. We believe that several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/ algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric and scalable cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. The latter path will lead to THz communications complemented by visible light communications in specific scenarios. At the protocol/algorithmic level, the enablers include improved coding, modulation, and waveforms to achieve lower latencies, higher reliability, and reduced complexity. Different options will be needed to optimally support different use cases. The resource efficiency can be further improved by using various combinations of full-duplex radios, interference management based on rate-splitting, machine-learning-based optimization, coded caching, and broadcasting.

  • Surrogate markers and predictors of endogenous insulin secretion in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Pediatrics. - : Zhejiang University Press. - 1708-8569 .- 1867-0687. ; 17:1, s. 99-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background No studies have examined endogenous insulin secretion in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes in China using the gold-standard mixed-meal tolerance test. Because the latter is labor-intensive, we examined simpler surrogate markers of endogenous insulin secretion in Chinese youth, as previously reported for a European population. Methods Participants were 57 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes aged 4.4-16.8 years (56% females). We performed 120-minute mixed-meal tolerance tests with serum C-peptide (CP) measurements every 30 minutes. Severe insulin deficiency (SID) was defined as CP peak < 0.2 nmol/L. Urine CP and creatinine levels were measured at 0 and 120 minutes. Results Twenty-five (44%) patients had SID. Fasting CP levels missed one case (96% sensitivity) with no false positives (100% specificity). While the 120-minute urine CP/creatinine had 100% sensitivity, it yielded markedly lower specificity (63%). Every 1-year increase in diabetes duration and 1-year decrease in age at diagnosis were associated with 37% (P < 0.001) and 20% (P = 0.005) reductions in serum CP area-under-the-curve, respectively. Thus, 86% of children aged < 5 years had SID compared to none among patients aged >= 11 years. Conclusions Simple fasting CP measurements could be used to detect most SID cases in Chinese youth with type 1 diabetes. Fasting CP is a far more reliable measure of endogenous insulin secretion than the more commonly used insulin dose. Therefore, it could more precisely determine insulin secretory capacity to target those who could benefit, if treatments to preserve residual insulin secretion are developed.
