  • The Nordic School of Quality Management
  • 1999
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nordic School of Quality Management integrates traditionalmanufacturing-oriented quality perspectives with the growing literature andresearch on the logic of service production. This book is our attempt topresent the current academic quality research on the subject in Sweden,Denmark, Finland and Norway. The basic idea behind this book is that both service and traditional qualityconcepts, theories, models and empirical results are needed today tounderstand and be successful in total quality management. The leaders ofservice and product quality in the Nordic countries have been invited tocontribute with a chapter reflecting their current research interests and tooffer an overview of cutting edge knowledge. The result is 15 chapterscovering areas such as health care, services, production, measurement, ergonomics, customer satisfaction and new product development

  • The Role of Quality Function Deployment in the Quality Movement
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: the Third Annual International QFD Symposium, Vol. 1 (Eds, Gustafsson, A., Bergman, B. and Ekdahl, F.) IKP/Quality Technology and Management, Linköping.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Finding Customer or Consumer wants and needs and converting these into products was early identified by Shewhart as a key issue for the manufacturing of products. A systematic technique supporting this process is Quality Function Deployment (QFD). In this paper we shall study the relations between QFD and the Quality Movement as initiated by Shewhart in the twenties, continued via the teachings of Deming and others and now widespread in industry and in society at large. We will also discuss in this paper the current use of QFD, especially the environments in which it has been used so far. Some comments concerning its future will also be given

  • Non-geometric Plackett-Burman Designs in Conjoint Analysis - A Way to Improve Predictions
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: INFORMS.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In their paper they use a non-geometric design to generate the concepts. Non-geometric designs represents a class of orthogonal designs that when the assumption of effect sparsity is valid, i.e. that only a few of the attributes actually influence the respondents' preferences, provide an opportunity to analyze interactions between attributes as well as the attributes themselves. In this article the use of non-geometric Plackett-Burman designs for conjoint analysis is advocated. Also, a procedure based on restricted all subsets regression for taking advantage of the special characteristics of the non-geometric designs is proposed and demonstrated using data from a conjoint study performed on cellular phone antennas in Sweden. Blomkvist, Ekdahl and Gustafsson also conducted a Monte Carlo simulation to further illustrate the properties of the proposed procedure and the use of non-geometric Plackett-Burman designs for conjoint analysis

  • Prevalence of coeliac disease in Turner syndrome
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Acta Pædiatrica. - 1651-2227 .- 0803-5253. ; 88, s. 933-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of coeliac disease in children and adolescents with Turner syndrome. Eighty-seven children and adolescents with Turner syndrome were screened for IgA- antiendomysium antibodies (EMA) and IgA-antigliadin antibodies (AGA), 5% (4/87) being found to be EMA-positive, and 15% (13/87) to have AGA levels above normal. Of the 10 patients who were either AGA- or EMA-positive and further investigated with intestinal biopsy, four manifested villous atrophy (i.e. all three of the EMA-positive patients, but only one of the seven AGA- positive patients). The results suggest EMA-positivity to be a good immunological marker for use in screening for coeliac disease, and such screening to be justified in patients with Turner syndrome.

  • The Effects of Satisfaction and Loyalty on Profits and Growth - Products versus Services
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper uses data from the Swedish Customer Satisfaction Index together with performance data from competing industries to study the difference in logic in terms of customer satisfaction and loyalty between services and products. We find that for product firms loyalty can have a negative effect on company performance, while for service firms the effect is positive. The implication is that service firms must earn their loyalty but product firms can lower their prices and thus retain their customers

  • Customer Focused Product Development in Practise - A Case Study at Scandinavian Airlines System
  • 1998
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The airline industry will be going through dramatic changes in the years to come. This is due foremost to altered customer demands and expectations but also to deregulation of the airline business. Many airline companies have lost track of the true needs of their passengers and are trapped in outdated views of what airline services is all about. The paper illustrates how Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has tried to set a new standard for customer focused services. Part of this effort was a thorough investigation into the concerns of the customers throughout the entire travel experience. Based on the results, SAS has tried to build an understanding for their passengers and today they develop services founded on what SAS believes are the customers' true needs and expectations

  • QFD for Service Development a Case Study from Telia Mobitel
  • 1997
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper the application of QFD for service development is discussed based on a case study from a Swedish telecommunications company. The case study in the paper presented is, however, not a "QFD success story". Instead, it illustrates how Telia Mobitel (Telia) used QFD, what did not quite work out, and how they continued to work instead. Also, the paper provides brief introductions to some of the methods used for service design and for collecting the voice of the customer in a service design context

  • Low molecular weight heparin (Dalteparin) as adjuvant treatment to thrombolysis in acute myocardial infarction-a pilot study : BIOchemical markers in acute coronary syndromes (BIOMACS II)
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American College of Cardiology. - 0735-1097 .- 1558-3597. ; 33:3, s. 627-633
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial evaluated the effect of dalteparin as an adjuvant to thrombolysis in patients with acute myocardial infarction regarding early reperfusion, recurrent ischemia and patency at 24 h. BACKGROUND: Low-molecular-weight heparin, given subcutaneously twice daily without monitoring, might be an attractive alternative to conventional intravenous heparin in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction. METHODS: In 101 patients dalteparin/placebo 100 IU/kg was given just before streptokinase and a second injection 120 IU/kg after 12 h. Monitoring with continuous vector-ECG was done to obtain signs of early reperfusion and later ischemic episodes. Blood samples for myoglobin were obtained at start and after 90 min to evaluate signs of reperfusion. Coronary angiography was performed after 20-28 h to evaluate TIMI-flow in the infarct-related artery. RESULTS: Dalteparin added to streptokinase tended to provide a higher rate of TIMI grade 3 flow in infarct-related artery compared to placebo, 68% versus 51% (p = 0.10). Dalteparin had no effects on noninvasive signs of early reperfusion. In patients with signs of early reperfusion, there seemed to be a higher rate of TIMI grade 3 flow, 74% versus 46% (myoglobin) (p = 0.04) and 73% versus 52% (vector-ECG) (p = 0.11). Ischemic episodes 6-24 h. after start of treatment were fewer in the dalteparin group, 16% versus 38% (p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: When dalteparin was added as an adjuvant to streptokinase and aspirin, there were tendencies for less ECG monitoring evidence of recurrent ischemia and better patency at 24 h, warranting further study.

  • Managerial Implications for Customer Focused Product Development
  • 1998
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the introduction of QFD a lot has been written about the best way for its implementation and use. Numerous publications have developed normative models of how to succeed with QFD. When these models are implemented, some companies have great success while other fail miserably. How can two companies using the same method come to such completely different results? In a study of six multinational companies this question has been examined. The cases show the importance of understanding the dynamics in an organization before implementing QFD. With knowledge about the situational factors and an understanding of how they influence each other, an implementation of QFD is likely to be successful. Some important managerial implications from the study are the need to adjust the method to each specific company and even to each specific application. Furthermore, companies working close to customers before encountering QFD seem less likely to achieve a successful implementation of the method

  • Priority Setting in QFD - Improvements and Implications
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the more important purposes of QFD is to prioritize customer needs and thus know where to focus resources in the future. The standard procedure in QFD is to ask customers to state their importances and there are many disadvantages connected to this procedure. The state-of-the-art approach in customer satisfaction modeling is to derive importances from the customers' evaluation of a product. This paper compares the two approaches. The conclusion is that it is better to derive the importances since it can be expected to generate more reliable results and it is easier to interpret

  • Working without Matrices - How Volvo Does it
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: the Fourth International QFD Symposiums in Sydney, Australia.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper illustrates how Volvo tries to save time in QFD projects by adapting the methodology to the specific situations where QFD is used at Volvo. Specifically, the paper illustrates Volvo's aim to always find engineering characteristics that can be measured objectively and are correlated with specific customer needs. This way Volvo can save considerable time by omitting the relationship matrix. The underlying ideas presented in the paper are supported by an empirical example, the Volvo T4, which is a high performance car based on Volvo's S40 and V40 models

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th IFAC Symposium on System Identification. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 0080425925 ; , s. 1249-1254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of Just-in-Time models has been introduced for models that are not estimated until they are really needed. The prediction is taken as a weighted average of neighboring points in the regressor space, such that an optimal bias/variance trade-off is achieved. The asymptotic properties of the method are investigated, and are compared to the corresponding properties of related statistical non-parametric kernel methods. It is shown that the rate of convergence for Just-in-Time models at least is in the same order as traditional kernel estimators, and that better rates probably can be achieved.

  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Thinking and Reasoning. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1464-0708 .- 1354-6783. ; 5:4, s. 327-337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sequences of numbers representing prior resource size were presented to participants in a common-pool resource dilemma. The numbers were sampled from uniform probability distributions with either a low variance (low resource uncertainty) or a high variance (high resource uncertainty). Presentations were both sequential and simultaneous. Three groups of 16 undergraduates either estimated the size of the resource when it did not represent value to them; requested an amount from the resource, identified with a sum of money, when the outcome of the requests only depended on resource size; or requested from the resource (sum of money) when the outcome of the requests depended on both resource size and how much others in a group requested. In support of an individual outcome-desirability bias due to selective recall of the number sequences, after sequential presentation larger requests were observed when resource uncertainty was high than when it was low. No effects of resource uncertainty or presentation were found on the estimates of resource size. Whether or not the outcome of the requests depended on others' requests made little difference.

  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Acta Psychologica. - : Elsevier BV. - 0001-6918. ; 103:1-2, s. 47-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In two resource-dilemma experiments participants were free to request an amount from an available resource whose size was a random variable with a uniform distribution either within a small interval (low resource uncertainty) or within a large interval (high resource uncertainty). In Experiment 1, one group of 20 undergraduates guessed the size of the resource as well as rated how confident they were. In three other groups equal numbers of undergraduates requested an amount which they would receive if it did not exceed the available resource. In one of these groups the outcome was only dependent on resource size, whereas in the remaining groups the outcome also depended on the requests by four other unfamiliar subjects who were either real or imaginary. Partially supporting a perceptual-bias explanation, subjects were in all groups found to overestimate or overharvest when resource uncertainty increased. Yet, an optimism or outcome-desirability bias explanation was maintained since the requests increased more with resource uncertainty than did the guesses whether or not the outcome depended on otherś requests. Experiment 2 employed another three groups of 20 undergraduates in a step-level resource-dilemma. Confirming the conclusion of Experiment 1, the results supported the outcome-desirability bias explanation but failed to support an egoism-bias explanation in showing that the overharvesting effect of resource uncertainty was not affected by social uncertainty.

  • Different kinds and roles of environmental uncertainty
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Psychology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0272-4944 .- 1522-9610. ; 18:1, s. 75-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In environmental psychology different roles appears to be ascribed to the concept of environmental uncertainty: in environmental aesthetics optimization of environmental uncertainty is assumed to explain preferences, in environmental- stress research minimization of environmental uncertainty is assumed to reduce stress, and in research on resource dilemmas environmental uncertainty is assumed to be accurately monitored. An analysis of the different definitions in each area of research reveals that environmental uncertainty refers to both event- event and response- consequence covariation, that it is not assumed to be inherent but to relate to ignorance or faulty information processing, and that it is multifacet subsuming the concepts of probability, vagueness and ambiguity. Although the different research areas do not seem to differ importantly in their definitions of environmental uncertainty, there are differences in emphasis. A possible reconciliation rests on: (1) that in research on resource dilemmas it is incorrect that people accurately monitor environmental uncertainty but, in fact, are susceptible to a desirability bias; (2) that sensation seeking plays a role for risk taking in resource dilemmas; and (3) that in environmental- stress research conditions of high environmental uncertainty have primarily been investigated, thus leaving out conditions when an increase of uncertainty would be desirable. It may be concluded then that basically people are optimizers of environmental uncertainty. However, this does not rule out that they, under most of the prevailing conditions, want to reduce environmental uncertainty. To help them do that seems, therefore, more appropriate than to do the reverse.
