  • Cost-Benefit Analysis of Environmental Change : Linking Theory to Empirical Observations
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Collected Conference Papers. - Zurich : CER-ETH.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a Cost-Bene¯t Analysis (CBA) of environmental change, in which theory and empirical work are closely knit together. The theoretical framework is used to derive a cost-bene¯t rule for projects that a®ect wild salmon survival. In contrast to many similar studies, we use this dynamic cost-bene¯t rule in structuring the contingent valuation study. Data comes from an ongoing project regarding a potential salmon passage- hydropower con°ict in the northern Swedish river UmeÄalven and its largest salmon producing tributary VindelÄalven. Daily water °ow data are com- bined with daily data on the number of salmon (1974-2000) that pass the hydropower plant Stornorrfors. Detailed ecological studies are used to build the contingent valuation scenario and to study the opportunity costs of re- leasing more water to the potential bene¯t of salmon upstream migrants. We present results from pilot-studies on the value Swedes place on increasing the amount of wild salmon in this particular river.

  • Self-rated health in middle-aged women : Associations with sense of coherence and socioeconomic and health-related factors
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 10:3, s. 99-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to describe and analyse self-rated health in relation to sense of coherence and socioeconomic and health-related factors and to explore the associations between self-rated health and these factors in order to identify health resources and health limitations in a group of healthy middle-aged women. Healthy middle-aged women from a defined geographical area in Southern Sweden ( n =577) answered a postal survey with the sense of coherence scale and questions about socioeconomic and health-related conditions. The results showed that very good/rather good self-rated health was associated with high sense of coherence and good economic situation, and these factors can be seen as a health resource. Poor self-rated health was most strongly associated with perceived symptoms of tension, weak sense of coherence, treatment for depression, treatment for chronic disease, and difficult economic situation, and these factors can be seen as health limitations. In conclusion, only 29% of the women rated their health as very good and 41% of the women had symptoms of tension but they were not sick-listed. It is of major public health interest to improve the understanding of self-rated health and to develop health promotion for women and methods to prevent symptoms of tension and sick-listing.

  • Algal toxins (DSP/PSP Mussel Infection Events)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Swedish national report on eutrophication status in the Kattegatt and the Skagerrak. - Norrköping : SMHI. ; , s. 50-52
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) along the Swedish west coast have contained DSP-toxins above the limit for consumption during part of the year every year since the monitoring programme started in 1988. Some areas that previously have been believed to be toxin free have experienced toxic events the last few years. PSP-toxins occur only rarely and usually below the limit for ban of consumption. However, e.g. in 2002, concentrations were higher than the limit for a short period in one fjord.
