  • Economic Agendas, Strategy and Proactive Planning in Post-Conflict Reconstruction of Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship & Small Business. - Geneve : Inderscience Enterprises Ltd. - 1476-1297. ; 3:5, s. 621-640
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper looks at the post-conflict economic reconstruction of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It takes a stance that the international assistance in reconstruction planning needs to focus on the overall systems framework, where all the segments play a crucial and equal role and where all the issues are regarded as dynamic and treated as interconnected. A significant progress has been achieved in understanding the social, political and economic factors underlying the civil and ethnic wars but the complexity of these factors in post-war situations and their inter-dependency has been comparatively neglected. This paper draws attention to the importance of innovation, knowledge creation and proactive strategies for achieving a competitive post-conflict society. What seems to emerge from the analysis is that achieving a real-time reconstruction is very difficult without a holistic approach to planning and systemic thinking. This paper, also considers the importance of the regional context and competitive (dis) advantages of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  • Traditional European Squares in Contemporary Urbanism : Dubrovnik's Medieval Squares
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Open House International. - 0168-2601. ; 34:4, s. 57-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Buildings clone do not matter, it is only the ensemble of streets, squares, and buildings and the way they fit together that comprises the true principles of good urbanism and place making. One of the main rules of good urban design is the quality of the public space. This paper analyzes the importance of creating & maintaining a true public square in contemporary urban condition, as one of the built environments' pillars for sustaining social and cultural identify. Criticism has been posed towards the (neo) romanticizing the importance of European squares (as some critics would call it "Postcard Squares") in everyday life and contemporary town planning. Movements such as New Urbanism, which promote good urban design hove not put squares that high on their urban design agendas. Also the usage of the historic European city's public realm model - the square - as the important ingredient for all urban places has not been forthcoming. To investigate this phenomena, and facilitate the discourse, The Square of the St. Blaise Church (Luzo Square) and the Gunduliceva Poljana Square in the Old City of Dubrovnik, are analyzed and reflected upon through various data collection, theory reflections and urban design evaluation methods, such as Gorham's Sense of Place Typology-Taxonomy. If cities hove livable and vibrant social spaces, do residents tend to hove a stronger sense of community and sense of place? If such places ore locking, does the opposite happen?. This paper seeks out to answer these questions. Finally the paper also looks at how the phenomenon of creating good social spaces through creating 'third places' is achieved and confirmed in the squares of Dubrovnik.

  • Structural change, cultural heritage and place
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Development and Planning II, Vols 1 and 2. - 1845640519 ; , s. 1509-1518
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last few decades, many cities have experienced structural change with deindustrialisation and public closure as a result. Strategies for regeneration include investments in infrastructures for production, consumption and communication. The transformation process results in deteriorated urban environments, and a change in the use and understanding of the urban landscape. The article discusses structural change and infrastructure planning, and its consequences for cultural heritage and the sense of place. We take the theoretical position that an understanding of place is crucial for sustainable heritage management, and that cultural meanings are generated through a combination of people - place interactions in time and space. Empirical findings are based on a case study of infrastructure planning and heritage management in the town of Soderhamn in northern Sweden. The analysis shows that the planning and management refers to space rather than to qualities of place. A tentative model is presented to draw attention to the importance of comprehensive analysis of investments in infrastructure and its consequences for cultural heritage.
