  • Derivative Creativity : The Financialization of the Contemporary American Novel
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of English Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1382-5577 .- 1744-4233. ; 21:1, s. 93-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article offers a critical analysis of financialisation as a conceptual category for making sense of contemporary American fiction. Examining the rise of the figure of the creative entrepreneur as well as a range of contemporary fiction, the author argues that, to make sense of these developments and texts, we need to attend to how they reproduce the logic of finance, and in particular that of the financial instrument of the derivative. Like the financial derivative, the novels the author examines are future-oriented: they calculate and speculate on the ways they feed forward into new iterations and media. In addition, the texts and their authors are embedded within entrepreneurial networks within which different fields and competencies are brought into relation with one another. Through these conjunctures, the logic of finance becomes that of the contemporary novel.

  • AN ADAPTIVE ISOGEOMETRIC CONTINUUM SHELL ELEMENT FOR EFFICIENT MODELLING OF DELAMINATION GROWTH
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To accurately predict damage growth in large, thin-walled composite structures, it is required to have models that are both valid and computational efficient. In this respect, isogeometric continuum shell elements provide an interesting option. First of all, the higher order continuity achieved via isogeometric analysis yields an increased in-plane smoothness that enable the use of larger shell elements. In addition, the high in-plane continuity also leads to that in-plane derivatives of in-plane stresses are continuous across element edges, thereby allowing for element-local recovery procedures for the prediction of out-of-plane stresses [2, 3]. Furthermore, as shown by Hosseini et al. [1], it is in an isogeometric continuum shell modelling framework rather straightforward to modify the through-thickness kinematics to incorporate weak and strong discontinuities. By introducing weak discontinuities at ply interfaces, the through-thickness strain discontinuities at these locations are explicitly accounted for. This enables a much better 3D strain and stress prediction, something which is key for a good estimation of the amount of intralaminar damage. By introducing strong discontinuities, the element is also capable to represent initiation and growth of one or several delamination cracks. In the current contribution, we extend the shell formulation from [1] into an adaptive continuum shell that allows for an update of the through-thickness kinematics at any required time instant during the simulation. The adaptivity is facilitated by that the through-thickness kinematical enrichment can be achieved by so-called ”knot insertion”, a step which can be fully automated due to the hierarchical nature of the isogeometric approximation functions. As a result, the current shell provides a good basis for an accurate but also computationally efficient prediction of the progressive failure in laminates, without a-priory knowledge of where damage will occur. Results show that the adaptive modelling framework works well, both to predict the full 3D stress states in multiaxial laminates, but also to capture growth of delaminations. Furthermore, in comparison to a fully resolved model, the adaptive approach gives significant time savings even for simple analyses where significant parts of the domain exhibit delamination growth. This implies that computational efforts (time and memory) can be considerably reduced when using this adaptive concept in large-scale analyses where damage develop only in a confined, but initially unknown area of the structure. • A Bayesian Network for IT Governance Performance Prediction
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th International Con-ference on Electronic Commerce. - New York, NY, USA : ACM.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The goal of IT governance is not only to achieve internal efficiency in an IT organization, but also to sup-port IT‟s role as a business enabler. The latter is an ability of an organization here denoted as IT gover-nance performance. IT management cannot control the IT governance performance directly. Instead, their realm of control includes several IT governance maturity indicators such as the existence of different IT activities, documents, metrics and roles. Current IT governance frameworks are suitable for describing IT governance, IT-systems, and business processes, but lack the ability to predict how changes to the IT gover-nance maturity indicators affect the IT governance performance. This paper presents a Bayesian network for IT governance performance prediction. Bayesian networks are widely used for goal modeling and prediction in other research fields. Data from 35 case studies conducted in a variety of organizations has been used to determine the behavior of the network. An assumption on linearity is introduced in order to compensate for the limited amount of data, and the network learns using the proposed Linear Conditional Probability Matrix Generator. The resulting Bayesian network for IT governance performance prediction can be used to support IT governance decision-making.

  • The past, present and future of cross-cultural management education: the educators’ perspectives
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Learning and Education. - : Academy of Management. - 1537-260X .- 1944-9585. ; 12:3, s. 477-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a series of interviews with leading cross-cultural management (CCM) educators, we examine the state of the CCM field within business education. We invited eight prominent scholars and executive educators to consider the following main questions: What is the role of cross-cultural management in business curricula? What challenges do we face teaching this material? How can we create an engaged learning environment with the diverse audiences we encounter in our classrooms, and what theoretical frameworks best support these efforts? Last, what is the future of cross-cultural management education? What changes and challenges can we expect? The learnings that emerged from our interviews are grouped around three main themes: the content of what we teach, our understanding of audiences with whom we work and their evolving expectations of cross-cultural management education, and the role, preparation, background and assumptions of the educators. This series of interviews contributes to highlight current trends in cross-cultural management education: a shift in content from knowledge to conditions of knowledge creation, a transition from monocultural audiences toward biculturals and global cosmopolitans, and finally, educators’ changing responsibility from providing knowledge to developing and honing responsible, tolerant, and resilient global citizens.

  • Tuning for Visible Fluorescence and Near-Infrared Phosphorescence on a Unimolecular Mechanically Sensitive Platform via Adjustable CH-pi Interaction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 9:4, s. 3865-3872
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CH-pi interaction-assisted alignment of organic conjugated systems has played an important role to regulate molecular electronic and photophysical properties, whereas harnessing such a smart noncovalent interaction into the tuning of unimolecular complex emissive bands covering a wide spectral region remains a challenging research topic. Since the tuning for visible and near-infrared emissive properties in a single pi-functional platform relates to its multicolor luminescent behaviors and potential superior application in analysis, bioimaging, and sensing, herein, we report a proportional control of the singlet and triplet emissions that cover visible and near-infrared spectral regions, respectively, can be straightforwardly achieved by CH-pi interaction-assisted self-assembly at the unimolecular level. Employing an octathionaphthalene-based single luminophore as a prototype, we find that a strength-adjustable CH-pi interaction-assisted self-assembly can be established in mixed DMF/H2O and in the film state. The hybridization of planar local excited and intramolecular charge transfer transitions occurs on the basis, allowing a competitive inhibition to the intersystem crossing process to generate a complex emission composed of visible fluorescence and near-infrared phosphorescence. Furthermore, reversible mechanochromic and mechanoluminescent conversions of the corresponding solid sample can both be observed to rely on a corresponding self-assembly alternation. These results can probably provide new visions for the development of future intelligent and multifunctional luminescent materials.

  • Receiver Front-Ends in CMOS with Ultra-Low Power Consumption
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Historically, research on radio communication has focused on improving range and data rate. In the last decade, however, there has been an increasing demand for low power and low cost radios that can provide connectivity with small devices around us. They should be able to offer basic connectivity with a power consumption low enough to function extended periods of time on a single battery charge, or even energy scavenged from the surroundings. This work is focused on the design of ultra-low power receiver front-ends intended for a receiver operating in the 2.4GHz ISM band, having an active power consumption of 1mW and chip area of 1mm². Low power consumption and small size make it hard to achieve good sensitivity and tolerance to interference. This thesis starts with an introduction to the overall receiver specifications, low power radio and radio standards, front-end and LO generation architectures and building blocks, followed by the four included papers. Paper I demonstrates an inductorless front-end operating at 915MHz, including a frequency divider for quadrature LO generation. An LO generator operating at 2.4GHz is shown in Paper II, enabling a front-end operating above 2GHz. Papers III and IV contain circuits with combined front-end and LO generator operating at or above the full 2.45GHz target frequency. They use VCO and frequency divider topologies that offer efficient operation and low quadrature error. An efficient passive-mixer design with improved suppression of interference, enables an LNA-less design in Paper IV capable of operating without a SAW-filter.

  • Discovery of a major seafloor methane release site in Europe : The Landsort deep, Baltic Sea.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: EGU General Assembly 2024. - : European Geosciences Union (EGU).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recently acquired multidisciplinary dataset comprising acoustic surveys (high-resolution sub- bottom profiles, multi-beam bathymetry, and broad band mid-water echo sounder), geochemistry (gas chemical and isotopic composition, porewater chemistry), and sedimentology (core lithology and X-ray CT) in the area of the Landsort deep (450 m of depth), south of Stockholm Archipelago, revealed the existence of an extensive (20 km2) region of the seafloor where massive gas release is occurring in the form of multiple bubble streams. This new discovery represents a major seafloor methane release site in Europe and is comparable in area to other large sites worldwide such as the ones in Svalbard and in the South Atlantic Ocean associated with gas hydrate provinces. The gas is formed mostly by methane of microbial origin. Surprisingly, bubbles rise 100’s of meters above the seafloor and reach surface waters above the halocline/oxycline at around 80 m of depth. Some bubbles appear to reach the sea-air interface and their potential methane contribution to the atmosphere is under investigation. Another surprising observation is the absence of major seafloor features like pockmarks in the gas release area. The reasons for the seafloor methane release in the Landsort deep are still not entirely clear, but our preliminary acoustic and sedimentological data suggest that bottom currents may have acted to facilitate the accumulation of organic-rich sediments in a thick drift deposit during the Holocene and the modern warm period (latest 100 years). Our data further suggest that the high sedimentation rate in the drift deposit continuously supplies fresh organic matter that is quickly buried below a thin sulphate reduction zone, fueling vigorous methanogenesis and abundant methane formation. Similar methane release sites might be discovered in other known large drift deposits in the Baltic Sea.

  • Fabrication of degradable polymer scaffolds to direct the integration and differentiation of retinal progenitors
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-5905 .- 0142-9612. ; 26:16, s. 3187-3196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) are self-renewing cells capable of differentiating into the different retinal cell types including photoreceptors, and they have shown promise as a source of replacement cells in experimental models of retinal degeneration. We hypothesized that a biodegradable polymer scaffold could deliver these cells to the subretinal space in a more organized manner than bolus injections, while also providing the graft with laminar organization and structural guidance channels. We fabricated highly porous scaffolds from blends of poly(L-lactic acid) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) using a variety of techniques to produce pores oriented normal to the plane of the scaffold. RPCs were seeded on the polymer scaffolds and cultured for 14 days. Seeded scaffolds were then either fixed for characterization or used in an explant or in vivo rat model. The, scaffolds were fully covered by RPCs in 3 days. Attachment of RPCs to the polymer scaffold was associated with down-regulation of immature markers and up-regulation of markers of differentiation. This suggests that the scaffold may promote differentiation of RPCs. The seeded cells elaborated cellular processes and aligned in the scaffold in conjunction with degenerating retinal explants. The cells also exhibited morphologies consistent with photoreceptors including a high degree of polarization of the cells. This data suggests that the scaffold may be a means to assist in the promotion of photoreceptor phenotypes. Implantation of the seeded scaffold into the rat eye is associated with increased RPC survival. Taken together, these data suggest that these polymer scaffolds provide a useful means for delivering RPCs to the subretinal space and may assist in the formation of retinal cell phenotypes, although it is clear that more cues are needed to direct the differentiation of RPCs into functional photoreceptors.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Energy. - : Elsevier. - 0360-5442 .- 1873-6785. ; 84, s. 289-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solar power generation is a crucial research area for countries that have high dependency on fossil energy sources and is gaining prominence with the current shift to renewable sources of energy. In order to integrate the electricity generated by solar energy into the grid, solar irradiation must be reasonably well forecasted, where deviations of the forecasted value from the actual measured value involve significant costs. The present paper proposes a univariate Dynamic Harmonic Regression model set up in a State Space framework for short-term (1-24h) solar irradiation forecasting. Time series hourly aggregated as the Global Horizontal Irradiation and the Direct Normal Irradiation will be used to illustrate the proposed approach. This method provides a fast automatic identification and estimation procedure based on the frequency domain. Furthermore, the recursive algorithms applied offer adaptive predictions. The good forecasting performance is illustrated with solar irradiance measurements collected from ground-based weather stations located in Spain. The results show that the Dynamic Harmonic Regression achieves the lowest relative Root Mean Squared Error; about 30% and 47% for the Global and Direct irradiation components, respectively, for a forecast horizon of 24h ahead.

  • The Long-term Effects of Student Absence: Evidence from Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Economic Journal. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1468-0297 .- 0013-0133. ; 133:650, s. 888-903
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the relatively uncontested importance of promoting school attendance in the policy arena, little evidence exists on the causal effect of school absence on long-run outcomes. We address this question by combining historical and administrative records for cohorts of Swedish individuals born in the 1930s. We find that elementary school absence significantly reduces contemporaneous academic performance, final educational attainment and labour income throughout the life cycle. The findings are consistent with a dynamic model of human capital formation, whereby absence causes small immediate learning losses, which cumulate to larger human capital losses over time and lead to worse labour market performance.

  • Mental Health Nurses Responding to Suffering in the 21st Century Occidental World : Accompanying People in Their Search for Meaning
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Archives of Psychiatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0883-9417 .- 1532-8228. ; 29:1, s. 19-25
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Much of contemporary health and mental health practice pays little attention to suffering, and when it does, invariably suffering is conflated with pain. Within such views, the health care practitioner ought to be concerned with removing or stopping the suffering as, for many parts of the occidental world at least, suffering is regarded as antagonistic to the pursuit of happiness. However, it has been recognized since ancient times that the experience of suffering can give rise to growth. This view sees suffering as an inevitable aspect of the human condition and experience; as something that might need to be endured, minimized, relieved, explored for meaning and maybe even learned from. The former conceptualization of suffering leaves little, if any, room for the sufferer to be to be proud of his suffering and to consider it ennobling rather than degrading, and such views are highly congruent with the increased pathologizing of 'everyday life' and with that, the inexorable proliferation of pharmacological treatment'. Accordingly, we assert that there is a clear need for Psychiatric/Mental Health nurses to re-think their views of suffering and consider how they might help the person discover meaning in the experience; how they might accompany the individual on his/her suffering journey. We therefore identify a range of approaches and interventions that Psychiatric/Mental Health nurses can use when attempting to help those experiencing mental health-related suffering. • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD. - 0284-1851 .- 1600-0455. ; 60:8, s. 955-961
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) interpretation and communication of findings and its implication on treatment decisions has not fully been explored in rectal cancer.Purpose: To investigate in a region the adherence to MRI protocol standards and the relation between MRI interpretation and selection to preoperative therapy in rectal cancer.Material and Methods: Data on consecutive patients who underwent elective rectal cancer surgery in the region from January to June 2010 were obtained from the National Colorectal Cancer Registry. Pretherapeutic MRI images were re-evaluated. Agreement between the original reports and the re-evaluation was compared using Cohen's kappa coefficient. Results: Among the 94 patients included, 81 (86%) had pretherapeutic MRI in accordance with defined imaging guidelines. In 34% of the original MR reports, data on extramural venous invasion (mrEMVI) and mrT category were not reported. Complete tumor staging was not possible because of missing data in 33 (35%) of the patients. The agreement between the original MR reports and the re-evaluation regarding tumor stage was moderate (kappa = 0.48). For decided treatment compared to recommended preoperative treatment according to the re-evaluation, the agreement was fair (kappa = 0.33).Conclusion: Established MRI protocol standards were not universally applied. Missing data and inadequacies in original MRI reports resulted in moderate agreement between the original report and the re-evaluation indicating a risk of inappropriate treatment selection. The results call for further educational efforts in rectal cancer MRI acquisition and repeated audits of image protocol adherence and interpretation quality.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 1098-0121. ; 88:2, s. artikel nr 024107-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation and field-induced switching of defect dipoles in acceptor doped lead titanate is described by a kinetic model representing an extension of the well established Arlt-Neumann model [Ferroelectrics 76, 303 (1987)]. Energy barriers for defect association and reorientation of oxygen vacancy-dopant (Cu and Fe) complexes are obtained from first-principles calculations and serve as input for kinetic coefficients of the rate equation model. The numerical solution of the model describes the time evolution of the oxygen vacancy distribution at different temperatures and dopant concentrations in the presence or absence of an alternating external field. We predict the characteristic time scale for the alignment of all defect dipoles with the spontaneous polarization of the surrounding matrix. In this state the defect dipoles act as obstacles for domain wall motion and contribute to the experimentally observed aging. Under cycling conditions the fully aligned configuration is perturbed and a dynamic equilibrium is established with defect dipoles in parallel and antiparallel orientation relative to the spontaneous polarization. This process can be related to the deaging behavior of piezoelectric ceramics.

  • A New Pedagogic Practice in Introduction to the Swedish Preschool: Changing Subject Positions
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Sweden the preschool is regarded as “the child´s first school” and a part of the educational system. Most children aged 1-5 attend preschool, where daycare and education are combined. The preschool is the start of “lifelong learning” and the importance of an early start in this institution is underpinned by the government.  The point of departure in this study is preschool teacher´s perspectives on changes in small children´s reception period in the preschool that have emerged during the last years. The change can be described as a movement from long reception periods (14 days) inspired by attachment theory where preschool teachers became attachment persons for the smallest children to short periods (3-5 days) with parents as active partakers in this reception. Objectives in this study are the preschool teacher´s constructions of their and the parents new positions in this new reception practice. We explore what have made these shifts possible, how these new preschool teachers and parents’ positions are constructed as well as what they may mean during the reception period. The method has been focus group interviews with seven preschool teams in Swedish preschools. Data have been analyzed with the help from social constructivist perspectives as well as analyses of discourses.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: OWL: Experiences and Directions – Reasoner Evaluation. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319546278 ; , s. 82-94
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Testing of a software system is resource-consuming activity. One of the promising ways to improve the efficiency of the software testing process is to use ontologies for testing. This paper presents an approach to test case generation based on the use of an ontology and inference rules. The ontology represents requirements from a software requirements specification, and additional knowledge about components of the software system under development. The inference rules describe strategies for deriving test cases from the ontology. The inference rules are constructed based on the examination of the existing test documentation and acquisition of knowledge from experienced software testers. The inference rules are implemented in Prolog and applied to the ontology that is translated from OWL functional-style syntax to Prolog syntax. The first experiments with the implementation showed that it was possible to generate test cases with the same level of detail as the existing, manually produced, test cases.
