  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Telomere-to-telomere and haplotype-resolved genome assembly of the Chinese cork oak (Quercus variabilis)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Plant Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-462X. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Quercus variabilis, a deciduous broadleaved tree species, holds significant ecological and economical value. While a chromosome-level genome for this species has been made available, it remains riddled with unanchored sequences and gaps. In this study, we present a nearly complete comprehensive telomere-to-telomere (T2T) and haplotype-resolved reference genome for Q. variabilis. This was achieved through the integration of ONT ultra-long reads, PacBio HiFi long reads, and Hi-C data. The resultant two haplotype genomes measure 789 Mb and 768 Mb in length, with a contig N50 of 65 Mb and 56 Mb, and were anchored to 12 allelic chromosomes. Within this T2T haplotype-resolved assembly, we predicted 36,830 and 36,370 protein-coding genes, with 95.9% and 96.0% functional annotation for each haplotype genome. The availability of the T2T and haplotype-resolved reference genome lays a solid foundation, not only for illustrating genome structure and functional genomics studies but also to inform and facilitate genetic breeding and improvement of cultivated Quercus species.

  • Critical Role of Phosphorus in Hollow Structures Cobalt-Based Phosphides as Bifunctional Catalysts for Water Splitting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Small. - : Wiley. - 1613-6810 .- 1613-6829. ; 18:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cobalt phosphides electrocatalysts have great potential for water splitting, but the unclear active sides hinder the further development of cobalt phosphides. Wherein, three different cobalt phosphides with the same hollow structure morphology (CoP-HS, CoP2-HS, CoP3-HS) based on the same sacrificial template of ZIF-67 are prepared. Surprisingly, these cobalt phosphides exhibit similar OER performances but quite different HER performances. The identical OER performance of these CoPx-HS in alkaline solution is attributed to the similar surface reconstruction to CoOOH. CoP-HS exhibits the best catalytic activity for HER among these CoPx-HS in both acidic and alkaline media, originating from the adjusted electronic density of phosphorus to affect absorption–desorption process on H. Moreover, the calculated ΔGH* based on P-sites of CoP-HS follows a quite similar trend with the normalized overpotential and Tafel slope, indicating the important role of P-sites for the HER process. Moreover, CoP-HS displays good performance (cell voltage of 1.67 V at a current density of 50 mA cm−2) and high stability in 1 M KOH. For the first time, this work detailly presents the critical role of phosphorus in cobalt-based phosphides for water splitting, which provides the guidance for future investigations on transition metal phosphides from material design to mechanism understanding.

  • Deciphering the Role of Chalcogen-Containing Heterocycles in Nonfullerene Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Energy Letters. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 2380-8195. ; 5:11, s. 3415-3425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The field of organic solar cells has experienced paradigm-shifting changes in recent years because of the emergence of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs). It is critically important to gain more insight into the structure-property relationship of the emerging A-DAD-A-type NFAs. In this Letter, a family of NFAs named BPF-4F, BPT-4F, and BPS-4F incorporating various chalcogen-containing heterocycles, i.e., furan, thiophene, and selenophene, respectively, was designed and synthesized. These NFAs exhibited dramatic differences in their photovoltaic performances with device efficiencies of 16.8% achieved by the thiophene-based cells, which was much higher than the furan-based ones (12.6%). In addition, the selenophene-based NFA showed a red-shifted absorption relative to the furan- and thiophene-based ones and obtained a decent efficiency of 16.3% owing to an improved J(SC). The reasons why these NFAs performed differently are systematically studied by comparing their optoelectronic properties and film morphology, which provides new understandings of the molecular design of high-performance NFAs.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Annals of Internal Medicine. - 0003-4819. ; 175:1, s. 101-113
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The 2020 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines recommend using the 0/1-hour and 0/2-hour algorithms over the 0/3-hour algorithm as the first and second choices of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn)-based strategies for triage of patients with suspected acute myocardial infarction (AMI).PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracies of the ESC 0/1-hour, 0/2-hour, and 0/3-hour algorithms.DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and Scopus from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2020. (PROSPERO: CRD42020216479).STUDY SELECTION: Prospective studies that evaluated the ESC 0/1-hour, 0/2-hour, or 0/3-hour algorithms in adult patients presenting with suspected AMI.DATA EXTRACTION: The primary outcome was index AMI. Twenty unique cohorts were identified. Primary data were obtained from investigators of 16 cohorts and aggregate data were extracted from 4 cohorts. Two independent authors assessed each study for methodological quality.DATA SYNTHESIS: A total of 32 studies (20 cohorts) with 30 066 patients were analyzed. The 0/1-hour algorithm had a pooled sensitivity of 99.1% (95% CI, 98.5% to 99.5%) and negative predictive value (NPV) of 99.8% (CI, 99.6% to 99.9%) for ruling out AMI. The 0/2-hour algorithm had a pooled sensitivity of 98.6% (CI, 97.2% to 99.3%) and NPV of 99.6% (CI, 99.4% to 99.8%). The 0/3-hour algorithm had a pooled sensitivity of 93.7% (CI, 87.4% to 97.0%) and NPV of 98.7% (CI, 97.7% to 99.3%). Sensitivity of the 0/3-hour algorithm was attenuated in studies that did not use clinical criteria (GRACE score <140 and pain-free) compared with studies that used clinical criteria (90.2% [CI, 82.9 to 94.6] vs. 98.4% [CI, 88.6 to 99.8]). All 3 algorithms had similar specificities and positive predictive values for ruling in AMI, but heterogeneity across studies was substantial. Diagnostic performance was similar across the hs-cTnT (Elecsys; Roche), hs-cTnI (Architect; Abbott), and hs-cTnI (Centaur/Atellica; Siemens) assays.LIMITATION: Diagnostic accuracy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and cardiac troponin sampling time varied among studies.CONCLUSION: The ESC 0/1-hour and 0/2-hour algorithms have higher sensitivities and NPVs than the 0/3-hour algorithm for index AMI.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Taiwan University Hospital.

  • Efficiency enhancement of micro-light-emitting diode with shrinking size by localized surface plasmons coupling
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics B: Lasers and Optics. - 0946-2171. ; 130:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The external quantum efficiency (EQE) enhancement of different sized GaN micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs) by using localized surface plasmons (LSPs) have been studied. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are attached to the sidewalls of μLEDs by spin-coating so as to be effectively coupled with the multiple quantum well (MQW) of μLEDs and generate the LSPs. In the μLEDs with 20 × 20 μm2 large mesas, the LSPs can effectively inhibit the efficiency droop. Compared to the μLED samples without the LSPs coupling, the EQE has been enhanced by about 8% at a high current density of 20,000 A/cm2. This work confirms the effectiveness of the LSPs technology in improving the μLED performances, which is originally practiced only on the basal faces of conventional LEDs.

  • Porous Ionic Network/CNT Composite Separator as a Polysulfide Snaring Shield for High Performance Lithium–Sulfur Battery
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Macromolecular rapid communications. - 1022-1336 .- 1521-3927. ; 44:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery features a high theoretical energy density, but the shuttle of soluble polysulfides between the two electrodes often results in a rapid capacity decay. Herein, a straightforward electrostatic adsorption strategy based on a cross-linked polyimidazolium separator as a snaring shield of polysulfides is reported, which suppresses the undesirable migration of polysulfides to the anode. The porous ionic network (PIN)-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are successfully prepared and coated onto a commercial porous polypropylene membrane in a vacuum-filtration step. The favorable affinity of the imidazolium ring toward polysulfide via the polar interaction and the electrostatic effect of ions mitigates the undesirable shuttle of polysulfides in the electrolyte, improving the Li─S battery in terms of rate performance and cycling life. Compared to the reference PIN-free CNT-coated separator, the PIN/CNT-coated one has an increased initial capacity of 1.3 folds (up to 1394.8 mAh g−1 for PIN/CNT/PP-3) at 0.1 C.

  • Degradation mechanisms of perovskite solar cells under vacuum and one atmosphere of nitrogen
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Energy. - : Springer Nature. - 2058-7546. ; 6:10, s. 977-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extensive studies have focused on improving the operational stability of perovskite solar cells, but few have surveyed the fundamental degradation mechanisms. One aspect overlooked in earlier works is the effect of the atmosphere on device performance during operation. Here we investigate the degradation mechanisms of perovskite solar cells operated under vacuum and under a nitrogen atmosphere using synchrotron radiation-based operando grazing-incidence X-ray scattering methods. Unlike the observations described in previous reports, we find that light-induced phase segregation, lattice shrinkage and morphology deformation occur under vacuum. Under nitrogen, only lattice shrinkage appears during the operation of solar cells, resulting in better device stability. The different behaviour under nitrogen is attributed to a larger energy barrier for lattice distortion and phase segregation. Finally, we find that the migration of excessive PbI2 to the interface between the perovskite and the hole transport layer degrades the performance of devices under vacuum or under nitrogen. Understanding degradation mechanisms in perovskite solar cells is key to their development. Now, Guo et al. show a greater degradation of the perovskite structure and morphology for devices operated under vacuum than under nitrogen.

  • Achieving Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution in Acidic Media on Yttrium Ruthenate Pyrochlore through Cobalt Incorporation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : Wiley. - 1616-301X .- 1616-3028. ; 33:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) especially in acidic media remains the major challenge that still requires significant advances, both in material design and mechanistic exploration. In this study, the incorporation of cobalt in Y2-xCoxRu2O7−δ results in an ultrahigh OER activity because of the charge redistribution at eg orbitals between Ru and Co atoms. The Y1.75Co0.25Ru2O7−δ electrocatalyst exhibits an extremely small overpotential of 275 mV in 0.5 m H2SO4 at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is smaller than that of parent Y2Ru2O7−δ (360 mV) and commercial RuO2 (286 mV) catalysts. The systematic investigation of the composition related to OER activity shows that the Co substitution will also bring other effective changes, such as reducing the bandgap, and creating oxygen vacancies, which result in fast OER charge transfer. Meanwhile, the strengthening of the bond hybridization between the d orbitals of metal (Y and Ru) and the 2p orbitals of O will intrinsically enhance the chemical stability. Finally, theoretical calculations indicate that cobalt substitution reduces the theoretical overpotential both through an adsorbate evolution mechanism and a lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism.

  • Rational design of Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction to hydrogen peroxide
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SusMat. - : Wiley. - 2766-8479 .- 2692-4552. ; 2:4, s. 456-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the oxygen reduction process to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a green option for H2O2 generation, the low activity and selectivity hindered the industry's process. In recent years, the electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 through a 2e– transfer method of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has piqued the interest of both academics and industry. Metal oxide catalysts have emerged as a novel family of electrochemical catalysts due to their unusual physical, chemical, and electrical characteristics. In this work, we first developed a Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite oxide (Pr2NiO4+δ) as a highly selective and active catalyst for 2e– ORR to produce H2O2. Molybdenum was introduced here to adjust the oxidation states of these transition metals with successful substitution into Ni-site to prepare Pr2Ni1-xMoxO4+δ, and the molybdenum substitution improves the H2O2 selectivity during the ORR process, in 0.1 M KOH, from 60% of Pr2NiO4+δ to 79% of Pr2Ni0.8Mo0.2O4+δ at 0.55 V versus RHE. A limiting H2O2 concentration of 0.24 mM for Pr2NiO4+δ and 0.42 mM for Pr2Ni0.8Mo0.2O4+δ was obtained at a constant current of 10 mA/cm2 using a flow-cell reactor using a gas-diffusion electrode.

  • Altered d-glucose in brain parenchyma and cerebrospinal fluid of early Alzheimer's disease detected by dynamic glucose-enhanced MRI
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 6:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Altered cerebral glucose uptake is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A dynamic glucose-enhanced (DGE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) approach was developed to simultaneously monitor d-glucose uptake and clearance in both brain parenchyma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We observed substantially higher uptake in parenchyma of young (6 months) transgenic AD mice compared to age-matched wild-type (WT) mice. Notably lower uptakes were observed in parenchyma and CSF of old (16 months) AD mice. Both young and old AD mice had an obviously slower CSF clearance than age-matched WT mice. This resembles recent reports of the hampered CSF clearance that leads to protein accumulation in the brain. These findings suggest that DGE MRI can identify altered glucose uptake and clearance in young AD mice upon the emergence of amyloid plaques. DGE MRI of brain parenchyma and CSF has potential for early AD stratification, especially at 3T clinical field strength MRI.

  • Combined impact of the Lewis number and thermal expansion on laminar flame flashback in tubes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Fluids. - : MDPI. - 2311-5521. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The understanding of the boundary layer flame flashback (BLF) has considerably improved in recent decades, driven by the increasing focus on clean energy and the need to address the operational issues associated with flashback. This study investigates the influence of the Lewis number (Le) on symmetric flame shapes under the critical conditions for a laminar boundary layer flashback in cylindrical tubes. It has been found that the transformation of the flame shape from a mushroom to a tulip happens in a tube of a given radius, as the thermal expansion coefficient and Le are modified. A smaller Lewis number results in a local increase in the burning rate at the flame tip, with the flame being able to propagate closer to the wall, which significantly increases the flashback propensity, in line with previous findings. In cases with a Lewis number smaller than unity, a higher thermal expansion results in a flame propagation happening closer to the wall, thus facing a weaker oncoming flow and, consequently, becoming more prone to flashback. For Le > 1, the effect of the increase in the thermal expansion coefficient on the flashback tendency is much less pronounced.

  • Numerical study of the influence of the thermal gas expansion on the boundary layer flame flashback in channels with different wall thermal conditions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 16:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, boundary layer flame flashback (BLF) has re-emerged as a technological and operational issue due to the more widespread use of alternative fuels as a part of a global effort to promote carbon neutrality. While much understanding has been achieved in experiments and simulations of BLF in the past decades, the theoretical modeling of BLF still largely relies on the progress made as early as the 1940s, when the critical gradient model (CGM) for the laminar flame flashback was proposed by Lewis and von Elbe. The CGM does not account for the modification of the upstream flow by the flame, which has been recently shown to play a role in BLF. The aim of the present work is to gain additional insight into the effects of thermal gas expansion and confinement on the flame-flow interaction in laminar BLF. Two-dimensional simulations of the confined laminar BLF in a channel are performed in this work. The parametric study focuses on the channel width, the thermal gas expansion coefficient, and the heat losses to the wall. This study evaluates the influence of these factors on the critical condition for the flame flashback. By varying the channel width, it is demonstrated that at the critical condition, the incoming flow in narrow channels is modified globally by the thermal gas expansion, while in wider channels, the flow modification by the flame tends to be more local. In narrow channels, a non-monotonic dependence of the critical-condition centerline velocity on the channel width has been identified. The variation of the heat loss to the wall confirms that the wall’s thermal conditions can significantly alter the flashback limit, with the flashback propensity being larger when the thermal resistance of the wall is high. To assess the general applicability of the CGM, the flame consumption speed and the flow velocity near the wall are quantified. The results confirm that the assumption of flame having no influence on the upstream flow, employed in the CGM, is not fulfilled under confinement for a realistic thermal gas expansion. This results in a general disagreement between the simulations and the CGM, which implies that the thermal expansion effects should be accounted for when considering the confined boundary layer flashback limits. It is shown that the critical velocity gradient increases with the gas expansion coefficient for the given channel width and wall thermal condition.

  • Multi-ancestry genetic study of type 2 diabetes highlights the power of diverse populations for discovery and translation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Nature. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 54:5, s. 560-572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We assembled an ancestrally diverse collection of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in 180,834 affected individuals and 1,159,055 controls (48.9% non-European descent) through the Diabetes Meta-Analysis of Trans-Ethnic association studies (DIAMANTE) Consortium. Multi-ancestry GWAS meta-analysis identified 237 loci attaining stringent genome-wide significance (P < 5 x 10(-9)), which were delineated to 338 distinct association signals. Fine-mapping of these signals was enhanced by the increased sample size and expanded population diversity of the multi-ancestry meta-analysis, which localized 54.4% of T2D associations to a single variant with >50% posterior probability. This improved fine-mapping enabled systematic assessment of candidate causal genes and molecular mechanisms through which T2D associations are mediated, laying the foundations for functional investigations. Multi-ancestry genetic risk scores enhanced transferability of T2D prediction across diverse populations. Our study provides a step toward more effective clinical translation of T2D GWAS to improve global health for all, irrespective of genetic background. Genome-wide association and fine-mapping analyses in ancestrally diverse populations implicate candidate causal genes and mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes. Trans-ancestry genetic risk scores enhance transferability across populations.

  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Worldwide, racial and ethnic minorities have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 with increased risk of infection, its related complications, and death. In the initial phase of population-based vaccination in the United States (U.S.) and United Kingdom (U.K.), vaccine hesitancy may result in differences in uptake. We performed a cohort study among U.S. and U.K. participants who volunteered to take part in the smartphone-based COVID Symptom Study (March 2020-February 2021) and used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios of vaccine hesitancy and uptake. In the U.S. (n = 87,388), compared to white participants, vaccine hesitancy was greater for Black and Hispanic participants and those reporting more than one or other race. In the U.K. (n = 1,254,294), racial and ethnic minority participants showed similar levels of vaccine hesitancy to the U.S. However, associations between participant race and ethnicity and levels of vaccine uptake were observed to be different in the U.S. and the U.K. studies. Among U.S. participants, vaccine uptake was significantly lower among Black participants, which persisted among participants that self-reported being vaccine-willing. In contrast, statistically significant racial and ethnic disparities in vaccine uptake were not observed in the U.K sample. In this study of self-reported vaccine hesitancy and uptake, lower levels of vaccine uptake in Black participants in the U.S. during the initial vaccine rollout may be attributable to both hesitancy and disparities in access.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanisms underlying sex determination are astonishingly plastic. Particularly the triggers for the molecular machinery, which recalls either the male or female developmental program, are highly variable and have evolved independently and repeatedly. Fish show a huge variety of sex determination systems, including both genetic and environmental triggers. The advent of sex chromosomes is assumed to stabilize genetic sex determination. However, because sex chromosomes are notoriously cluttered with repetitive DNA and pseudogenes, the study of their evolution is hampered. Here we reconstruct the birth of a Y chromosome present in the Atlantic herring. The region is tiny (230 kb) and contains only three intact genes. The candidate male-determining gene BMPR1BBY encodes a truncated form of a BMP1B receptor, which originated by gene duplication and translocation and underwent rapid protein evolution. BMPR1BBY phosphorylates SMADs in the absence of ligand and thus has the potential to induce testis formation. The Y region also contains two genes encoding subunits of the sperm-specific Ca2+ channel CatSper required for male fertility. The herring Y chromosome conforms with a characteristic feature of many sex chromosomes, namely, suppressed recombination between a sex-determining factor and genes that are beneficial for the given sex. However, the herring Y differs from other sex chromosomes in that suppression of recombination is restricted to an ∼500-kb region harboring the male-specific and sex-associated regions. As a consequence, any degeneration on the herring Y chromosome is restricted to those genes located in the small region affected by suppressed recombination.

    • The growing demand for fast, reliable, and accessible information in the vastly connected world makes disposable sensors increasingly important. However, reducing their costs, environmental impact, and usability remains challenging. Here, we report a low-cost, biodegradable, and recyclable all-lignocellulosic triboelectric nanogenerator (AL-TENG) for self-powered disposable medical monitoring. Based on a facile in situ lignin regeneration & chemical crosslinking modification strategy, a high-performance lignocellulosic bioplastic is synthesized from resource-abundant and renewable biomass for fabricating the AL-TENG. The whole device has a low environmental impact as it can be easily recycled and biodegraded at its end-of-life. Furthermore, a self-powered smart ward system and a self-powered contactless medical monitoring system are developed to improve the convenience for patients and reduce the risk of mutual infection. This work can expand the application of self-powered systems to disposable medical sensing, which may greatly promote the development of intelligent wards and disposable electronics.

  • Ingår i: Psychology of Consciousness. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 2326-5523 .- 2326-5531. ; 9:4, s. 356-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rubber hand illusion (RHI) is a remarkable perceptual illusion affecting the experience of one’s own body. However, methodological differences between studies are very common, which affects comparability across studies. This leads to inconsistent, sometimes contradictory, results and interpretations. One source of methodological differences is in the stimulation protocol of the illusion. Here we describe a simple and affordable device that automates the stimulation procedure in a typical rubber hand illusion setup. This device delivers tactile stimulation to the participant’s real hand and the model hand. It allows variation of the frequency and delay between the two touches (i.e., asynchronous stimulation), some of most common parameters in the stimulation protocol of RHI studies. We present the results of a validation study, in which we compare it against the classical manual stimulation procedure. Crucially we show that the automated procedure leads to illusory experiences as expected with high illusion ratings during synchronous, but not asynchronous stimulation. Further, this procedure displays similar illusion strength and number of illusion responders as the manual procedure. These results suggest that automated induction is a viable alternative to manual induction with the advantage of precise control and description. Adopting an automated procedure will increase reliability and replicability for rubber hand illusion studies. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Ingår i: Avian Research. - : Elsevier. - 2053-7166. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic load and inbreeding are recognized as important factors to be considered in conservation programs. Elevated levels of both can increase the risk of population extinction by negatively impacting fitness-related characters in many species of plants and animals, including humans (inbreeding depression). Genomic techniques are increasingly used in measuring and understanding genetic load and inbreeding and their importance in evolution and conservation. We used whole genome resequencing data from two sibling grouse species in subarctic Eurasia to quantify both. We found a large range of inbreeding measured as FROH (fraction of runs of homozygosity) in individuals from different populations of Chinese Grouse (Tetrastes sewerzowi) and Hazel Grouse (T. bonasia). FROH estimated from genome-wide runs of homozygosity (ROH) ranged from 0.02 to 0.24 among Chinese Grouse populations and from 0.01 to 0.44 in Hazel Grouse. Individuals from a population of Chinese Grouse residing in the Qilian mountains and from the European populations of Hazel Grouse (including samples from Sweden, Germany and Northeast Poland) were the most inbred (FROH ranged from 0.10 to 0.23 and 0.11 to 0.44, respectively). These levels are comparable to other highly inbred populations of birds. Hazel Grouse from northern China and Chinese Grouse residing in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau showed relatively lower inbreeding levels. Comparisons of the ratio between deleterious missense mutations and synonymous mutations revealed higher levels in Chinese Grouse as compared to Hazel Grouse. These results are possibly explained by higher fixation rates, mutational melt down, in the range-restricted Chinese Grouse compared to the wide-ranging Hazel Grouse. However, when we compared the relatively more severe class of loss-of-function mutations, Hazel Grouse had slightly higher levels than Chinese Grouse, a result which may indicate that purifying selection (purging) has been more efficient in Chinese Grouse on this class of mutations.

  • Alkali Metal Cations as Charge-Transfer Bridge for Polarization Promoted Solar-to-H2 Conversion
  • 2023

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Utilization of spontaneous polarization electric field of ferroelectric materials to realize the spatial separation and fast transfer of photogenerated charges has been regarded as a promising strategy to fabricate highly efficient photocatalysts. Herein, a novel heterostructure is constructed by coupling potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI) with ferroelectric BaxSr1-xTiO3 (BxST) through a facile electrostatic self-assembly strategy. The ionic species of K-PHI can neutralize the polarized charges in BxST to form intimate interfacial contact, substantially boosting the internal electric field. Notably, K+ cations intercalated into K-PHI act as charge-transfer bridge to promote migration and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, a significantly improved H2-evolution rate of 1087.4 µmol h−1 g−1 with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 8.05% at 420 nm is achieved over 5% K-PHI/B0.8ST, standing among the best polymeric carbon nitride-based photocatalysts reported up to date. Moreover, the extreme stability of the catalysts is evidenced by remaining outstanding catalytic performance even after storage for half a year. This strategy can be extended to other alkali metal (Na+ and Cs+) modified polymeric materials, highlighting the key role of the bridging ions in constructing polarized heterostructure, which sheds light on the design of ferroelectric-assisted photocatalysts.

  • Promoted photocatalytic degradation and detoxication performance for norfloxacin on Z-scheme phosphate-doped BiVO4/graphene quantum dots/P-doped g-C3N4
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Separation and Purification Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1383-5866. ; 274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel kind of Z-scheme ternary heterojunctions phosphate-doped BiVO4/graphene quantum dots/P-doped g-C3N4 (BVP/GQDs/PCN) were fabricated for the visible light degradation of norfloxacin (NOR), a typical antibiotic. Compared with binary type-II heterojunction phosphate-doped BiVO4/PCN (BVP/PCN), Z-scheme BVP/GQDs/PCN exhibited promoted interfacial charge transfer efficiency and broadened visible light response range, endowing them with excellent photodegradation activity and mineralization ability in NOR degradation. A high NOR degradation rate of 86.3% with a removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) of 55.8% can be achieved over BVP/GQDs/PCN for 120 min visible light irradiation, which is an excellent performance compared with ever reported similar photocatalysts. In particular, because of the enhanced redox ability of photogenerated charges and the generation of multiple active species (eg. [rad]OH and [rad]O2−) over Z-scheme photocatalytic system, the accumulation of highly toxic degradation intermediates was greatly inhibited, and a better detoxication performance was obtained compared to PCN and BVP/PCN. This work may shed light on the inhibition of highly toxic degradation intermediates of antibiotics by regulating the charge transfer mechanism, photocatalytic active species, and the degradation pathway of antibiotics.

  • Metal-Free SeBN Ternary-Doped Porous Carbon as Efficient Electrocatalysts for CO2 Reduction Reaction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Energy Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2574-0962. ; 5:9, s. 10518-10525
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cost-effective heteroatom-doped porous carbons are considered promising electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Traditionally porous carbons with N doping or N/X codoping (X denotes the second type of heteroatom) have been widely studied, leaving ternary doping a much less studied yet exciting topic to be explored. Herein, a series of electrocatalysts based on metal-free Se, B, and N ternary-doped porous carbons (termed “SeBN-Cs”) were synthesized and tested as metal-free electrocatalysts in CO2RR. Our study indicates that the major product of CO2RR on the SeBN-C electrocatalysts was CO with a small fraction (<5%) of H2 as the byproduct. The optimal electrocatalyst sample SeBN-C-1100 prepared at 1100 °C exhibits a high CO selectivity with a Faradaic efficiency of CO reaching 95.2%. After 10 h of continuous electrolysis operation, the Faradaic efficiency and the current density are maintained high at 97.6 and 84.7% of the initial values, respectively, indicative of a long-term operational stability. This study provides an excellent reference to deepen our understanding of the properties and functions of multi-heteroatom-doped porous carbon electrocatalysts in CO2RR.

  • Experimental extraction of nonlocal weak values for demonstrating the failure of a product rule
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Optics Letters. - 0146-9592 .- 1539-4794. ; 45:7, s. 1715-1718
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We experimentally demonstrate an alternative method for measuring nonlocal weak values in linear optics, avoiding the use of second-order interaction. The method is based on the concept of modular values. The paths of two photons, initialized in hyperentangled states, are adopted as the meter with the polarization acting as the system. The modular values are read out through the reconstructed final states of the meter. The weak value of nonlocal observables is given through its connection to the modular value. Comparing the weak values of local and nonlocal observables, we demonstrate the failure of product rules for an entangled system. Our results significantly simplify the task of measuring nonloral weak values and will play an important role in the application of weak measurement.

  • A high-conductivity n-type polymeric ink for printed electronics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Research. - 2041-1723. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conducting polymers, such as the p-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), have enabled the development of an array of opto- and bio-electronics devices. However, to make these technologies truly pervasive, stable and easily processable, n-doped conducting polymers are also needed. Despite major efforts, no n-type equivalents to the benchmark PEDOT:PSS exist to date. Here, we report on the development of poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline):poly(ethyleneimine) (BBL:PEI) as an ethanol-based n-type conductive ink. BBL:PEI thin films yield an n-type electrical conductivity reaching 8Scm(-1), along with excellent thermal, ambient, and solvent stability. This printable n-type mixed ion-electron conductor has several technological implications for realizing high-performance organic electronic devices, as demonstrated for organic thermoelectric generators with record high power output and n-type organic electrochemical transistors with a unique depletion mode of operation. BBL:PEI inks hold promise for the development of next-generation bioelectronics and wearable devices, in particular targeting novel functionality, efficiency, and power performance. The development of n-type conductive polymer inks is critical for the development of next-generation opto-electronic devices that rely on efficient hole and electron transport. Here, the authors report an alcohol-based, high performance and stable n-type conductive ink for printed electronics.

  • The GLIM criteria as an effective tool for nutrition assessment and survival prediction in older adult cancer patients
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nutrition. - : Elsevier. - 0261-5614 .- 1532-1983. ; 40:3, s. 1224-1232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background & aims: Elderly cancer patients are at particularly high risk for malnutrition because both the disease and the old age threaten their nutritional status. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) released new universal criteria for diagnosing and grading malnutrition, but the validation of these criteria in elderly cancer population is not well documented. Our objective was to investigate the application of the GLIM criteria in nutrition assessment and survival prediction in elderly cancer patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on a primary cohort of 1192 cancer patients aged 65 years or older enrolled from a multi-institutional registry, and a validation cohort of 300 elderly cancer patients treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Patients considered at -risk for malnutrition based on the NRS-20 02 were assessed using the GLIM criteria. The association between the nutritional status and patients' overall survival (OS) was then analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method and a Cox model. A nomogram was also established that included additional inde-pendent clinical prognostic variables. To determine the predictive accuracy and discriminatory capacity of the nomogram, the C-index, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration curve were evaluated. Results: The percentage of patients considered & ldquo;at-risk & rdquo; for malnutrition was 64.8% and 67.3% for the primary and validation cohorts, respectively. GLIM-defined malnutrition was diagnosed in 48.4% of pa-tients in the primary cohort and 46.0% in the validation cohort. In the primary cohort, patients at risk of malnutrition (NRS-20 02 > 3) showed a worse OS than those with a NRS-20 02 < 3 (HR 1.34, 1.10-1.64; p = 0.003). Additionally, patients with GLIM-defined severe malnutrition (HR1.71, 1.37-2.14; p < 0.001) or moderate malnutrition (HR1.35, 1.09-1.66; p = 0.006) showed a significantly shorter OS compared to those without malnutrition. The nomogram incorporating the domains of the GLIM with other variables was accurate, especially for predicting the 1-and 2-year overall survival rates. Conclusions: The GLIM criteria can be used in elderly cancer patients not only to assess malnutrition, but also to predict survival outcome. The nomogram developed based on the GLIM domains can provide a more accurate prediction of the prognosis than existing systems. • Interfacial defective Ti3+ on Ti/TiO2 as visible-light responsive sites with promoted charge transfer and photocatalytic performance
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science and Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1005-0302. ; 106, s. 139-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Defect sites on oxide semiconductors play a crucial role in promoting photocatalytiperformance and modulating the bandgap structure of photocatalysts. However, the role of interfacial coordinatively unsaturated defect sites between metal and oxide in photocatalysis is still under debate. So, we designed an experiment to probe the role of interfacial coordinatively unsaturated defect sites. In this work, a series of Ti/TiO2 photocatalysts with varying concentrations of interfacial Ti3+ sites were prepared through an epitaxial growth method under hydrothermal conditions. Through experimental and computational investigations, the roles of interfacial defect sites were discussed in detail. On the one hand, the interfacial coordinatively unsaturated Ti3+ sites could act as visible-light-responsive sites in photocatalytic reactions due to the overlap and hybridization of multiple electronic orbitals. On the other hand, the Ti/TiO2 interface exhibited a certain degree of metallic character near the Fermi level because of the partial delocalization and redistribution of electrons, facilitating the charge migration and separation across the metal-oxide interface. Consequently, the obtained Ti/TiO2 catalysts showed notably enhanced charge transfer efficiency and visible light photocatalytic activity compared to their pristine counterparts. This work may provide a new perspective to interfacial defect engineering in classic metal/oxide heterojunction photocatalysts and figure a more precise direction to synthesize higher effective photocatalysts for environmental governance.
