Lofar low-band antenna observations of the 3C 295 and boötes fields: Source counts and ultra-steep spectrum sources

- We present Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) Low Band observations of the Bootes and 3C 295 fields. Our images made at 34, 46, and 62 MHz reach noise levels of 12, 8, and 5 mJy beam(-1), making them the deepest images ever obtained in this frequency range. In total, we detect between 300 and 400 sources in each of these images, covering an area of 17-52 deg(2). From the observations, we derive Euclidean-normalized differential source counts. The 62 MHz source counts agree with previous GMRT 153 MHz and Very Large Array 74 MHz differential source counts, scaling with a spectral index of -0.7. We find that a spectral index scaling of -0.5 is required to match up the LOFAR 34 MHz source counts. This result is also in agreement with source counts from the 38 MHz 8C survey, indicating that the average spectral index of radio sources flattens toward lower frequencies. We also find evidence for spectral flattening using the individual flux measurements of sources between 34 and 1400 MHz and by calculating the spectral index averaged over the source population. - In 1990, the EHE (Enterprise in Higher Education) was introduced to British Universities, with a view to developing 'enterprise' skills to ensure that graduates should be better prepared for working life. It embraced a wide range of approaches, including curriculum and staff development, innovative approaches to teaching and learning and the greater encouragement of partnerships between higher education institutions and employers. To support these initiatives, institutions were awarded contracts for up to H million over five years. The total expenditure for EHE and related projects between 1993 and 1999 will have been f60 million, within some 60 institutions.

- The medicalisation of the behaviour of children is a phenomenon that is attracting growing attention, with particular concern about the increased likelihood of children living in disadvantaged contexts receiving a medical diagnosis, such as attention-de fi cit hyperactivity disorder, and treatment. This paper reports on a study of professionals involved with children experiencing behavioural problems. The professionals interviewed in this study articulated their own reservations about the medicalisation of children ’ s behaviour and revealed a number of strate- gies for interrupting the process towards diagnosis. These interruptions, analysed using Deleuze and Guattari ’ s concept of deterriorialisation, took place along linguistic, visual and affective planes and were successful in encouraging teachers and head teachers to see alternatives to the medical route. The fi ndings have implications for existing practice in the response to, and support for, behavioural problems and for teacher education.
