  • The Seventh Visual Object Tracking VOT2019 Challenge Results
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE/CVF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER VISION WORKSHOPS (ICCVW). - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 9781728150239 ; , s. 2206-2241
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2019 is the seventh annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 81 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis as well as the standard VOT methodology for long-term tracking analysis. The VOT2019 challenge was composed of five challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2019 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2019 focused on long-term tracking namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. Two new challenges have been introduced: (iv) VOT-RGBT2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB and thermal imagery and (v) VOT-RGBD2019 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2019, VOT-RT2019 and VOT-LT2019 datasets were refreshed while new datasets were introduced for VOT-RGBT2019 and VOT-RGBD2019. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term, long-term tracking and tracking with multi-channel imagery. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Analysis of Heritability and Shared Heritability Based on Genome-Wide Association Studies for 13 Cancer Types
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of the National Cancer Institute. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0027-8874 .- 1460-2105. ; 107:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Studies of related individuals have consistently demonstrated notable familial aggregation of cancer. We aim to estimate the heritability and genetic correlation attributable to the additive effects of common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for cancer at 13 anatomical sites. Methods: Between 2007 and 2014, the US National Cancer Institute has generated data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for 49 492 cancer case patients and 34 131 control patients. We apply novel mixed model methodology (GCTA) to this GWAS data to estimate the heritability of individual cancers, as well as the proportion of heritability attributable to cigarette smoking in smoking-related cancers, and the genetic correlation between pairs of cancers. Results: GWAS heritability was statistically significant at nearly all sites, with the estimates of array-based heritability, h(l)(2), on the liability threshold (LT) scale ranging from 0.05 to 0.38. Estimating the combined heritability of multiple smoking characteristics, we calculate that at least 24% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 14% to 37%) and 7% (95% CI = 4% to 11%) of the heritability for lung and bladder cancer, respectively, can be attributed to genetic determinants of smoking. Most pairs of cancers studied did not show evidence of strong genetic correlation. We found only four pairs of cancers with marginally statistically significant correlations, specifically kidney and testes (rho = 0.73, SE = 0.28), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and pediatric osteosarcoma (rho = 0.53, SE = 0.21), DLBCL and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) (rho = 0.51, SE = 0.18), and bladder and lung (rho = 0.35, SE = 0.14). Correlation analysis also indicates that the genetic architecture of lung cancer differs between a smoking population of European ancestry and a nonsmoking Asian population, allowing for the possibility that the genetic etiology for the same disease can vary by population and environmental exposures. Conclusion: Our results provide important insights into the genetic architecture of cancers and suggest new avenues for investigation.

  • A community-derived classification for extant lycophytes and ferns
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systematics and Evolution. - : Wiley. - 1674-4918 .- 1759-6831. ; 54:6, s. 563-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phylogeny has long informed pteridophyte classification. As our ability to infer evolutionary trees has improved, classifications aimed at recognizing natural groups have become increasingly predictive and stable. Here, we provide a modern, comprehensive classification for lycophytes and ferns, down to the genus level, utilizing a community-based approach. We use monophyly as the primary criterion for the recognition of taxa, but also aim to preserve existing taxa and circumscriptions that are both widely accepted and consistent with our understanding of pteridophyte phylogeny. In total, this classification treats an estimated 11 916 species in 337 genera, 51 families, 14 orders, and two classes. This classification is not intended as the final word on lycophyte and fern taxonomy, but rather a summary statement of current hypotheses, derived from the best available data and shaped by those most familiar with the plants in question. We hope that it will serve as a resource for those wanting references to the recent literature on pteridophyte phylogeny and classification, a framework for guiding future investigations, and a stimulus to further discourse.

  • A multi-ancestry genome-wide study incorporating gene-smoking interactions identifies multiple new loci for pulse pressure and mean arterial pressure
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press. - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 28:15, s. 2615-2633
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elevated blood pressure (BP), a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, is influenced by both genetic and lifestyle factors. Cigarette smoking is one such lifestyle factor. Across five ancestries, we performed a genome-wide gene–smoking interaction study of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and pulse pressure (PP) in 129 913 individuals in stage 1 and follow-up analysis in 480 178 additional individuals in stage 2. We report here 136 loci significantly associated with MAP and/or PP. Of these, 61 were previously published through main-effect analysis of BP traits, 37 were recently reported by us for systolic BP and/or diastolic BP through gene–smoking interaction analysis and 38 were newly identified (P < 5 × 10−8, false discovery rate < 0.05). We also identified nine new signals near known loci. Of the 136 loci, 8 showed significant interaction with smoking status. They include CSMD1 previously reported for insulin resistance and BP in the spontaneously hypertensive rats. Many of the 38 new loci show biologic plausibility for a role in BP regulation. SLC26A7 encodes a chloride/bicarbonate exchanger expressed in the renal outer medullary collecting duct. AVPR1A is widely expressed, including in vascular smooth muscle cells, kidney, myocardium and brain. FHAD1 is a long non-coding RNA overexpressed in heart failure. TMEM51 was associated with contractile function in cardiomyocytes. CASP9 plays a central role in cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Identified only in African ancestry were 30 novel loci. Our findings highlight the value of multi-ancestry investigations, particularly in studies of interaction with lifestyle factors, where genomic and lifestyle differences may contribute to novel findings.

  • Ingår i: Chinese Physics C. - : SCIENCE PRESS. - 1674-1137 .- 2058-6132. ; 42:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To investigate the nature of the psi(3770) resonance and to measure the cross section for e(+)e(-) -> D (D) over bar, a cross-section scan data sample, distributed among 41 center-of-mass energy points from 3.73 to 3.89 GeV, was taken with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider in the year 2010. By analyzing the large angle Bhabha scattering events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample at each center-of-mass energy point. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample is 76.16 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.61 pb(-1), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.522.7) and 16.5 cm (13.319.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Upconversion enhancement by a dual-resonance all-dielectric metasurface
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372. ; 11:4, s. 1856-1862
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have drawn much attention in the past decade due to their superior physicochemical features and great potential in biomedical and biophotonic studies. However, their low luminescence efficiency often limits their applications. Here, we demonstrated a dual-resonance all-dielectric metasurface to enhance the signals emitted by upconversion nanoparticles (NaYF4:Yb/Tm). An averaged upconversion signal enhancement of around 400 times is detected experimentally. The electric and magnetic dipole resonances of the metasurface are designed to enhance the local excitation field and the quantum efficiency of the upconversion nanoparticles, respectively. Furthermore, the collection efficiency is enhanced due to the directional emission of the UCNPs on the metasurface. Our approach provides a powerful tool to extend the sensing application potential of upconversion nanoparticles.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Proteome Research. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1535-3893 .- 1535-3907. ; 14:9, s. 3415-3431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper summarizes the recent activities of the Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP) consortium, which develops new technologies to identify yet-to-be annotated proteins (termed "missing proteins") in biological samples that lack sufficient experimental evidence at the protein level for confident protein identification. The C-HPP also aims to identify new protein forms that may be caused by genetic variability, post-translational modifications, and alternative splicing. Proteogenomic data integration forms the basis of the C-HPP's activities; therefore, we have summarized some of the key approaches and their roles in the project. We present new analytical technologies that improve the chemical space and lower detection limits coupled to bioinformatics tools and some publicly available resources that can be used to improve data analysis or support the development of analytical assays. Most of this paper's content has been compiled from posters, slides, and discussions presented in the series of C-HPP workshops held during 2014. All data (posters, presentations) used are available at the C-HPP Wild (http://c-hpp.webhosting.rug.nl/) and in the Supporting Information.

  • Trans-ancestry genome-wide association study identifies 12 genetic loci influencing blood pressure and implicates a role for DNA methylation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 47:11, s. 1282-1293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We carried out a trans-ancestry genome-wide association and replication study of blood pressure phenotypes among up to 320,251 individuals of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. We find genetic variants at 12 new loci to be associated with blood pressure (P = 3.9 × 10−11 to 5.0 × 10−21). The sentinel blood pressure SNPs are enriched for association with DNA methylation at multiple nearby CpG sites, suggesting that, at some of the loci identified, DNA methylation may lie on the regulatory pathway linking sequence variation to blood pressure. The sentinel SNPs at the 12 new loci point to genes involved in vascular smooth muscle (IGFBP3, KCNK3, PDE3A and PRDM6) and renal (ARHGAP24, OSR1, SLC22A7 and TBX2) function. The new and known genetic variants predict increased left ventricular mass, circulating levels of NT-proBNP, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (P = 0.04 to 8.6 × 10−6). Our results provide new evidence for the role of DNA methylation in blood pressure regulation.

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2018 is the sixth annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of over eighty trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis and a “real-time” experiment simulating a situation where a tracker processes images as if provided by a continuously running sensor. A long-term tracking subchallenge has been introduced to the set of standard VOT sub-challenges. The new subchallenge focuses on long-term tracking properties, namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. A new dataset has been compiled and a performance evaluation methodology that focuses on long-term tracking capabilities has been adopted. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term and the new long-term tracking subchallenges. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. • Benchmarking OpenMP Programs for Real-Time Scheduling
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 23Rd International Conference On Embedded And Real-Time Computing Systems And Applications (RTSCA). - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781538618981
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Real-time systems are shifting from single-core to multi-core processors. Software must be parallelized to fully utilize the computation power of multi-core architecture. OpenMP is a popular parallel programming framework in general and high-performance computing, and recently has drawn a lot of interests in embedded and real-time computing. Much recent work has been done on real-time scheduling of OpenMP-based parallel workload. However, these studies conduct evaluations with randomly generated task systems, which cannot well represent the structure features of OpenMP workload. This paper presents a benchmark suite, ompTGB, to support research on real-time scheduling of OpenMP-based parallel tasks. ompTGB does not only collect realistic OpenMP programs, but also models them into task graphs so that the real-time scheduling researchers can easily understand and use them. We also present a new response time bound for a subset of OpenMP programs and use it to demonstrate the usage of ompTGB.

  • Muscle-like Artificial Molecular Actuators for Nanoparticles
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Chem. - : Cell Press. - 2451-9308 .- 2451-9294. ; 4:11, s. 2670-2684
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muscle tissue performs crucial contraction/extension motions that generate mechanical force and work by consuming chemical energy. Inspired by this naturally created biomolecular machine, artificial molecular muscles are designed and synthesized to undertake linear actuation functions. However, most of these muscle-like actuators are performed at large ensembles, while to realize the nanoscale actuation at the single-to few-molecule level remains challenging. Herein, we developed an artificial muscle-like molecular actuator that can reversibly control the proximity of the attached nano-objects, gold nanoparticles, within the single-molecule length level by its stimuli-responsive muscle-like linear contraction/extension motion. The molecular actuation motion is accompanied by an optical signal output resulting from the plasmonic resonance properties of gold nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the thermal noise of the muscle-like molecular actuator can be overcome by integrating the optical signal over a sufficiently long period.

  • Utilization-Based Scheduling of Flexible Mixed-Criticality Real-Time Tasks
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Computers. - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 0018-9340 .- 1557-9956. ; 67:4, s. 543-558
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mixed-criticality models are an emerging paradigm for the design of real-time systems because of their significantly improved resource efficiency. However, formal mixed-criticality models have traditionally been characterized by two impractical assumptions: once any high-criticality task overruns, all low-criticality tasks are suspended and all other high-criticality tasks are assumed to exhibit high-criticality behaviors at the same time. In this paper, we propose a more realistic mixed-criticality model, called the flexible mixed-criticality (FMC) model, in which these two issues are addressed in a combined manner. In this new model, only the overrun task itself is assumed to exhibit high-criticality behavior, while other high-criticality tasks remain in the same mode as before. The guaranteed service levels of low-criticality tasks are gracefully degraded with the overruns of high-criticality tasks. We derive a utilization-based technique to analyze the schedulability of this new mixed-criticality model under EDF-VD scheduling. During run time, the proposed test condition serves an important criterion for dynamic service level tuning, by means of which the maximum available execution budget for low-criticality tasks can be directly determined with minimal overhead while guaranteeing mixed-criticality schedulability. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the FMC scheme compared with state-of-the-art techniques.

  • AXL promotes Zika virus infection in astrocytes by antagonizing type I interferon signalling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Microbiology. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2058-5276. ; 3:3, s. 302-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zika virus (ZIKV) is associated with neonatal microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome(1,2). While progress has been made in understanding the causal link between ZIKV infection and microcephaly(3-9), the life cycle and pathogenesis of ZIKV are less well understood. In particular, there are conflicting reports on the role of AXL, a TAM family kinase receptor that was initially described as the entry receptor for ZIKV(10-22). Here, we show that while genetic ablation of AXL protected primary human astrocytes and astrocytoma cell lines from ZIKV infection, AXL knockout did not block the entry of ZIKV. We found, instead, that the presence of AXL attenuated the ZIKV-induced activation of type I interferon (IFN) signalling genes, including several type I IFNs and IFN-stimulating genes. Knocking out type I IFN receptor alpha chain (IFNAR1) restored the vulnerability of AXL knockout astrocytes to ZIKV infection. Further experiments suggested that AXL regulates the expression of SOCS1, a known type I IFN signalling suppressor, in a STAT1/STAT2-dependent manner. Collectively, our results demonstrate that AXL is unlikely to function as an entry receptor for ZIKV and may instead promote ZIKV infection in human astrocytes by antagonizing type I IFN signalling.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of systems architecture. - : ELSEVIER. - 1383-7621 .- 1873-6165. ; 98, s. 443-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OpenMP is the de facto standard parallel programming framework on shared memory architectures, which is not only widely used in general and high-performance computing but also draws increasing interests for real-time embedded systems. Choosing the appropriate assignment of loop iterations to threads is one of the most critical decisions when parallelizing loops, especially considering the large impact by caches behaviors to the program execution time. In this paper, we study data cache analysis for OpenMP programs with parallel loops. We first present a method considering the impact of the schedule clause in OpenMP programs on cache behavior. We capture the dynamic behavior of memory access by computing its temporal scope (the loop iterations where a given memory block is accessed for a given data reference) during address analysis. Based on the ACS representation, we present a temporal scope aware data cache miss calculation technique. Through the experimental result, we propose a convenient way to choose an appropriate parallelization scheme for OpenMP programs.

  • Endothelin receptor-A mediates degradation of the glomerular endothelial surface layer via pathologic crosstalk between activated podocytes and glomerular endothelial cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Kidney International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0085-2538. ; 96:4, s. 957-970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emerging evidence of crosstalk between glomerular cells in pathological settings provides opportunities for novel therapeutic discovery. Here we investigated underlying mechanisms of early events leading to filtration barrier defects of podocyte and glomerular endothelial cell crosstalk in the mouse models of primary podocytopathy (podocyte specific transforming growth factor-beta receptor 1 signaling activation) or Adriamycin nephropathy. We found that glomerular endothelial surface layer degradation and albuminuria preceded podocyte foot process effacement. These abnormalities were prevented by endothelin receptor-A antagonism and mitochondria! reactive oxygen species scavenging. Additional studies confirmed increased heparanase and hyaluronoglucosaminidase gene expression in glomerular endothelial cells in response to podocyte-released factors and to endothelin-1. Atomic force microscopy measurements showed a significant reduction in the endothelial surface layer by endothelin-1 and podocyte-released factors, which could be prevented by endothelin receptor-A but not endothelin receptor-B antagonism. Thus, our studies provide evidence of early crosstalk between activated podocytes and glomerular endothelial cells resulting in loss of endothelial surface layer, glomerular endothelial cell injury and albuminuria. Hence, activation of endothelin-1-endothelin receptor-A and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species contribute to the pathogenesis of primary podocytopathies in experimental focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

  • Impact of pre-transplant depression on outcomes of allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cancer. - : Wiley. - 0008-543X .- 1097-0142. ; 123:10, s. 1828-1838
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact of depression before autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) on clinical outcomes post-transplantation.METHODS: We analyzed data from the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research to compare outcomes after autologous (n=3786) or allogeneic (n=7433) HCT for adult patients with hematologic malignancies with an existing diagnosis of pre-HCT depression requiring treatment versus those without pre-HCT depression. Using Cox regression models, we compared overall survival (OS) between patients with or without depression. We compared the number of days alive and out of the hospital in the first 100 days post-HCT using Poisson models. We also compared the incidence of grade 2-4 acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in allogeneic HCT.RESULTS: The study included 1116 (15%) patients with pre-transplant depression and 6317 (85%) without depression who underwent allogeneic HCT between 2008 and 2012. Pre-transplant depression was associated with lower OS (hazard ratio [HR], 1.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.23; P=0.004) and a higher incidence of grade 2-4 acute GVHD (HR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.14-1.37; P<0.0001), but similar incidence of chronic GVHD. Pre-transplant depression was associated with fewer days-alive-and-out-of-the hospital (means ratio [MR]=0.97; 95% CI, 0.95-0.99; P=0.004). There were 512 (13.5%) patients with Pre-transplant depression and 3274 (86.5%) without depression who underwent autologous HCT. Pre-transplant depression in autologous HCT was not associated with OS (HR, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.98-1.34; P=0.096) but was associated with fewer days alive and out of the hospital (MR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.97-0.99; P=0.002).CONCLUSION: Pre-transplant depression was associated with lower OS and higher risk of acute GVHD among allogeneic HCT recipients and fewer days alive and out of the hospital during the first 100 days after autologous and allogeneic HCT. Patients with pre-transplant depression represent a population that is at risk for post-transplant complications.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The New England journal of medicine. - 1533-4406. ; 374:3, s. 223-232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Human reproduction depends on the fusion of a mature oocyte with a sperm cell to form a fertilized egg. The genetic events that lead to the arrest of human oocyte maturation are unknown. Methods We sequenced the exomes of five members of a four-generation family, three of whom had infertility due to oocyte meiosis I arrest. We performed Sanger sequencing of a candidate gene, TUBB8, in DNA samples from these members, additional family members, and members of 23 other affected families. The expression of TUBB8 and all other β-tubulin isotypes was assessed in human oocytes, early embryos, sperm cells, and several somatic tissues by means of a quantitative reverse-transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction assay. We evaluated the effect of the TUBB8 mutations on the assembly of the heterodimer consisting of one α-tubulin polypeptide and one β-tubulin polypeptide (α/β-tubulin heterodimer) in vitro, on microtubule architecture in HeLa cells, on microtubule dynamics in yeast cells, and on spindle assembly in mouse and human oocytes. Results We identified seven mutations in the primate-specific gene TUBB8 that were responsible for oocyte meiosis I arrest in 7 of the 24 families. TUBB8 expression is unique to oocytes and the early embryo, in which this gene accounts for almost all the expressed β-tubulin. The mutations affect chaperone-dependent folding and assembly of the α/β-tubulin heterodimer, disrupt microtubule behavior on expression in cultured cells, alter microtubule dynamics in vivo, and cause catastrophic spindle-assembly defects and maturation arrest on expression in mouse and human oocytes. Conclusions TUBB8 mutations have dominant-negative effects that disrupt microtubule behavior and oocyte meiotic spindle assembly and maturation, causing female infertility. • Shear Behavior Study on Timber-Concrete Composite Structures with Bolts
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: BioResources. - : BioResources. - 1930-2126. ; 11:4, s. 9205-9218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The key point of design for timber-concrete composite structure is to ensure the reliability of shear connectors. This study examined the mechanical properties of bolt-type connectors in timber-concrete composite structures theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical study was based on the Johansen yield theory (European Yield Model). Push-out specimens with different bolt dimensions were tested to determine the shear capacity and slip modulus. According to the experimental results, bolts yielded without timber or concrete cracks when the stiffness of bolts was not very great. The shear capacity and slip modulus of the bolt connectors were directly proportional to the diameter of the bolt. The strength of concrete was found to significantly affect the shear capacity of bolt connectors. Comparison between the theoretical and the experimental shear strength results showed reasonable agreement.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet of Things (IoT) has been experiencing exponential growth in recent years, but still faces many serious challenges. The distributed ledger technology (DLT), e.g., Blockchain, not only appears to be promising to address these technical challenges, but also brings tremendous opportunities for new application and business models. However, the convergence of IoT and DLT is yet a goal far beyond our reach today. Among many problems that have not been sufficiently understood, a fundamental one is how to design appropriate consensus mechanisms for DLT applied to IoT, which is the theme of this paper. We first discuss the potential benefits of applying DLT to IoT, and identify major challenges posed to DLT by IoT. Then we make a survey of existing DLT consensus mechanisms, to summarize major principles and discuss their pros and cons when applied in IoT.

  • High-spin structures in the Xe-129 nucleus
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9985. ; 93:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the Xe-129 nucleus are studied with the reaction Sn-124(Be-9,4n) at a beam energy of 36 MeV. The level scheme is extended significantly. For the positive-parity band, the alpha = +1/2 and the alpha = -1/2 signature components are combined to form a complete band structure based on the 3/2(+) state with spin and parity up to 21/2(+). For the negative-parity band based on the 11/2(-) state, the alpha = +1/2 signature component is newly established and both the alpha = +1/2 and the alpha = -1/2 signature components also form a complete band structure up to the 35/2(-) state. The positive-and negative-parity bands are proposed to originate from nu d(3/2) 3/2(+)[402] and nu h(11/2)11/2(-)[505] Nilsson configurations, respectively. A backbending is observed in the negative-parity band, which originates from the alignments of two h(11/2) protons according to crank shell model calculations. Based on the total Routhian surface and quasiparticle triaxial rotor model calculations, the negative-parity band is interpreted as a triaxially deformed shape with gamma approximate to -30 degrees, while the positive-parity band is associated with. softness, in accordance with previous studies. In the high-spin states, three decoupled bands and one oblate band with gamma approximate to -60 degrees are newly identified. The systematics and other characteristics of these bands are discussed.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Body-fat distribution is a risk factor for adverse cardiovascular health consequences. We analyzed the association of body-fat distribution, assessed by waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index, with 228,985 predicted coding and splice site variants available on exome arrays in up to 344,369 individuals from five major ancestries (discovery) and 132,177 European-ancestry individuals (validation). We identified 15 common (minor allele frequency, MAF >= 5%) and nine low-frequency or rare (MAF < 5%) coding novel variants. Pathway/gene set enrichment analyses identified lipid particle, adiponectin, abnormal white adipose tissue physiology and bone development and morphology as important contributors to fat distribution, while cross-trait associations highlight cardiometabolic traits. In functional follow-up analyses, specifically in Drosophila RNAi-knockdowns, we observed a significant increase in the total body triglyceride levels for two genes (DNAH10 and PLXND1). We implicate novel genes in fat distribution, stressing the importance of interrogating low-frequency and protein-coding variants.

    • Every two years groups worldwide participate in the Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction (CASP) experiment to blindly test the strengths and weaknesses of their computational methods. CASP has significantly advanced the field but many hurdles still remain, which may require new ideas and collaborations. In 2012 a web-based effort called WeFold, was initiated to promote collaboration within the CASP community and attract researchers from other fields to contribute new ideas to CASP. Members of the WeFold coopetition (cooperation and competition) participated in CASP as individual teams, but also shared components of their methods to create hybrid pipelines and actively contributed to this effort. We assert that the scale and diversity of integrative prediction pipelines could not have been achieved by any individual lab or even by any collaboration among a few partners. The models contributed by the participating groups and generated by the pipelines are publicly available at the WeFold website providing a wealth of data that remains to be tapped. Here, we analyze the results of the 2014 and 2016 pipelines showing improvements according to the CASP assessment as well as areas that require further adjustments and research.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 91:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Tc-99 with energies up to 6 MeV have been populated using the Zr-96(Li-7, 4n)Tc-99 reaction with a laboratory beam energy of 35 MeV. Coincident gamma rays from excited nuclei produced in the reactions were detected using an array of coaxial, planar, and clover-type high-purity germanium detectors. A total of 60 new gamma-ray transitions and 21 new levels are identified and placed into a new level scheme. Two collective bands assigned to be built on the pi g(9/2)[422]5/2(+) and pi p(1/2)[301]1/2(-) Nilsson configurations have been extended with spins up to 35/2 and 33/2 h, respectively. Backbending and signature inversion have been observed in the yrast band. The large signature splitting of the positive-parity band in Tc-99 may be caused by a triaxial deformation, which agrees well with the electromagnetic properties, theoretical calculations based on total Routhian surface, and triaxial particle-rotor model calculations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-spin states in the odd-odd Pm-138 nucleus have been reinvestigated via the Te-124(F-19, 5n) reaction at the beam energy of 103MeV. Most of the known transitions and levels are confirmed. A number of bands are revised and one new band has been established. For the yrast pi h(11/2) circle times nu h(11/2) band based on 8(+) state, no evidence supporting the occurence of signature inversion is found. The experimental and theoretical B(M1)/B(E2) ratios have been calculated for band (2), which support the pi g(7/2)[413]5/2(+) circle times nu h(11/2)[514]9/2(-) Nilsson configuration assignment. Four bands with Delta I = 2 transitions are tentatively assigned as doubly decoupled bands. The other three bands are proposed as oblate-triaxial bands. The possible configuration assignments for these bands are also discussed under the calculations of total Routhian surface and particle-rotor model.

  • Ingår i: Green Chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1463-9262 .- 1463-9270. ; 21:13, s. 3499-3535
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential sustainable feedstock to replace fossil fuels. However, the complex structure of biomass makes it difficult to convert into high-value products. Utilization of lignocellulosic biomass in a green and effective way is of great significance for sustainable development. Based on the analysis of different options, we proposed that cascade utilization according to its composition, characteristics, and nature is the best way to utilize the lignocellulosic biomass. To promote the cascade utilization of lignocellulosic biomass, this article provides a review of the latest research results from the aspect of cascade utilization of lignocellulosic biomass covering the whole chain from pretreatment to high-value products, and the research on the non-conventional pretreatments including microwave irradiation, supercritical fluids, ultrasonic irradiation, electric field, hydrodynamic cavitation, and ionic liquids are presented in detail and evaluated by 4 proposed levels, and the newly developed high-value applications were further overviewed for lignin (carbon/graphene/carbon nano-tubes, dye dispersants, bioplastics, and aerogels), cellulose (cellulose-based ionic liquids, functional composites, adsorbent materials, carbon, and aerogels), and hemicellulose (films and pharmaceutical carriers), respectively. Finally, perspectives on the future research on the cascade utilization of lignocellulosic biomass are highlighted.

  • Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - : Elsevier. - 1474-547X .- 0140-6736. ; 392:10159, s. 2091-2138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of “leaving no one behind”, it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and estimated the health-related SDG index for 195 countries and territories for the period 1990–2017, projected indicators to 2030, and analysed global attainment. Methods: We measured progress on 41 health-related SDG indicators from 1990 to 2017, an increase of four indicators since GBD 2016 (new indicators were health worker density, sexual violence by non-intimate partners, population census status, and prevalence of physical and sexual violence [reported separately]). We also improved the measurement of several previously reported indicators. We constructed national-level estimates and, for a subset of health-related SDGs, examined indicator-level differences by sex and Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintile. We also did subnational assessments of performance for selected countries. To construct the health-related SDG index, we transformed the value for each indicator on a scale of 0–100, with 0 as the 2·5th percentile and 100 as the 97·5th percentile of 1000 draws calculated from 1990 to 2030, and took the geometric mean of the scaled indicators by target. To generate projections through 2030, we used a forecasting framework that drew estimates from the broader GBD study and used weighted averages of indicator-specific and country-specific annualised rates of change from 1990 to 2017 to inform future estimates. We assessed attainment of indicators with defined targets in two ways: first, using mean values projected for 2030, and then using the probability of attainment in 2030 calculated from 1000 draws. We also did a global attainment analysis of the feasibility of attaining SDG targets on the basis of past trends. Using 2015 global averages of indicators with defined SDG targets, we calculated the global annualised rates of change required from 2015 to 2030 to meet these targets, and then identified in what percentiles the required global annualised rates of change fell in the distribution of country-level rates of change from 1990 to 2015. We took the mean of these global percentile values across indicators and applied the past rate of change at this mean global percentile to all health-related SDG indicators, irrespective of target definition, to estimate the equivalent 2030 global average value and percentage change from 2015 to 2030 for each indicator. Findings: The global median health-related SDG index in 2017 was 59·4 (IQR 35·4–67·3), ranging from a low of 11·6 (95% uncertainty interval 9·6–14·0) to a high of 84·9 (83·1–86·7). SDG index values in countries assessed at the subnational level varied substantially, particularly in China and India, although scores in Japan and the UK were more homogeneous. Indicators also varied by SDI quintile and sex, with males having worse outcomes than females for non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality, alcohol use, and smoking, among others. Most countries were projected to have a higher health-related SDG index in 2030 than in 2017, while country-level probabilities of attainment by 2030 varied widely by indicator. Under-5 mortality, neonatal mortality, maternal mortality ratio, and malaria indicators had the most countries with at least 95% probability of target attainment. Other indicators, including NCD mortality and suicide mortality, had no countries projected to meet corresponding SDG targets on the basis of projected mean values for 2030 but showed some probability of attainment by 2030. For some indicators, including child malnutrition, several infectious diseases, and most violence measures, the annualised rates of change required to meet SDG targets far exceeded the pace of progress achieved by any country in the recent past. We found that applying the mean global annualised rate of change to indicators without defined targets would equate to about 19% and 22% reductions in global smoking and alcohol consumption, respectively; a 47% decline in adolescent birth rates; and a more than 85% increase in health worker density per 1000 population by 2030. Interpretation: The GBD study offers a unique, robust platform for monitoring the health-related SDGs across demographic and geographic dimensions. Our findings underscore the importance of increased collection and analysis of disaggregated data and highlight where more deliberate design or targeting of interventions could accelerate progress in attaining the SDGs. Current projections show that many health-related SDG indicators, NCDs, NCD-related risks, and violence-related indicators will require a concerted shift away from what might have driven past gains—curative interventions in the case of NCDs—towards multisectoral, prevention-oriented policy action and investments to achieve SDG aims. Notably, several targets, if they are to be met by 2030, demand a pace of progress that no country has achieved in the recent past. The future is fundamentally uncertain, and no model can fully predict what breakthroughs or events might alter the course of the SDGs. What is clear is that our actions—or inaction—today will ultimately dictate how close the world, collectively, can get to leaving no one behind by 2030.

  • Ingår i: Protein and Cell. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1674-800X .- 1674-8018. ; 8:8, s. 560-572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Articular cartilage is a connective tissue consisting of a specialized extracellular matrix (ECM) that dominates the bulk of its wet and dry weight. Type II collagen and aggrecan are the main ECM proteins in cartilage. However, little attention has been paid to less abundant molecular components, especially minor collagens, including type IV, VI, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, and XIV, etc. Although accounting for only a small fraction of the mature matrix, these minor collagens not only play essential structural roles in the mechanical properties, organization, and shape of articular cartilage, but also fulfil specific biological functions. Genetic studies of these minor collagens have revealed that they are associated with multiple connective tissue diseases, especially degenerative joint disease. The progressive destruction of cartilage involves the degradation of matrix constituents including these minor collagens. The generation and release of fragmented molecules could generate novel biochemical markers with the capacity to monitor disease progression, facilitate drug development and add to the existing toolbox for in vitro studies, preclinical research and clinical trials.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • C-telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) has been shown to be a highly relevant biomarker of cartilage degradation in human rheumatic diseases, if measured in synovial fluid or urine. However, serum or plasma CTX-II have not been demonstrated to have any clinical utility to date. Here, we describe the GPDPLQ1237 ELISA which targets the EKGPDPLQ↓ neo-epitope, an elongated version of the CTX-II neo-epitope (EKGPDP↓), speculated to be a blood-precursor of CTX-II generated by the cysteine protease cathepsin K. Human osteoclast cartilage resorption cultures as well as oncostatin M and tumour necrosis factor α-stimulated bovine cartilage explant cultures were used to validate GPDPLQ1237 biologically by treating the cultures with the cysteine protease inhibitor E-64 and/or the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor GM6001 to assess the potential contributions of these two protease classes to GpDpLQ1237 release. Cartilage resorption-derived GPDPLQ1237 release was inhibited by E-64 (72.1% inhibition), GM6001 (75.5%), and E-64/GM6001 (91.5%), whereas CTX-II release was inhibited by GM6001 (87.0%) but not by E-64 (5.5%). Cartilage explant GPDPLQ1237 and CTX-II release were both fully inhibited by GM6001 but were not inhibited by E-64. No clinically relevant GPDPLQ1237 reactivity was identified in human serum, plasma, or urine from healthy donors or arthritis patients. In conclusion, the GPDPLQ1237 biomarker is released during osteoclast-derived cysteine protease- and MMP-mediated cartilage degradation in vitro, whereas CTX-II release is mediated by MMPs and not by cysteine proteases, as well as from MMP-mediated cartilage degradation under a pro-inflammatory stimulus. These findings suggest that GPDPLQ1237 may be relevant in diseases with pathological osteoclast activity and cartilage degradation. Further studies are required to validate the neo-epitope in human samples.

  • Comparing Channel Emulation Algorithms by Using Plane Waves and Spherical Vector Waves in Multiprobe Anechoic Chamber Setups

  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. - 0018-926X .- 1558-2221. ; 67:6, s. 4091-4103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper evaluates the performances of channel emulation algorithms in the multiprobe anechoic chamber (MPAC) by using plane wave (PW) and spherical vector wave (SVW) theories. Channel emulation in MPAC enables the over-the-air (OTA) testing of performances of wireless devices under realistic propagation scenarios, through setting excitation voltages of probes and utilizing the polarized radiation patterns, locations, and orientations of probe antennas to emulate desired fields in test zone. Accurate emulation of radio wave propagation in target scenario guarantees that the device under test (DUT) be assessed fairly in the laboratory. Dynamic multipath scenario and orthogonal polarization can be emulated by exciting the multiple probes in such a way that the total fields from probes resemble the target impinging field in the test zone. The excitation voltages can be either calculated by PWor SVW theories. Despite the fact that PW and SVW are mathematically equal in the far field, different treatments on rotation and translation of waves as well as different linear equations used in two methods result in different computed voltages, hence, different emulated fields. The emulation performances of the two methods with different MPAC setups (e.g., test zone size, probe number, probe sphere radius, and probe directivity) are investigated. Both scenarios of the 2-D field emulation with the 2-D probe configuration and the 3-D (or 2.5-D) field emulation with the 3-D probe configuration are discussed, and instructions on how to wisely use the emulation algorithm are provided.

  • Population and fertility by age and sex for 195 countries and territories, 1950–2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - 1474-547X .- 0140-6736. ; 392:10159, s. 1995-2051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Population estimates underpin demographic and epidemiological research and are used to track progress on numerous international indicators of health and development. To date, internationally available estimates of population and fertility, although useful, have not been produced with transparent and replicable methods and do not use standardised estimates of mortality. We present single-calendar year and single-year of age estimates of fertility and population by sex with standardised and replicable methods. Methods: We estimated population in 195 locations by single year of age and single calendar year from 1950 to 2017 with standardised and replicable methods. We based the estimates on the demographic balancing equation, with inputs of fertility, mortality, population, and migration data. Fertility data came from 7817 location-years of vital registration data, 429 surveys reporting complete birth histories, and 977 surveys and censuses reporting summary birth histories. We estimated age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs; the annual number of livebirths to women of a specified age group per 1000 women in that age group) by use of spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression and used the ASFRs to estimate total fertility rates (TFRs; the average number of children a woman would bear if she survived through the end of the reproductive age span [age 10–54 years] and experienced at each age a particular set of ASFRs observed in the year of interest). Because of sparse data, fertility at ages 10–14 years and 50–54 years was estimated from data on fertility in women aged 15–19 years and 45–49 years, through use of linear regression. Age-specific mortality data came from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 estimates. Data on population came from 1257 censuses and 761 population registry location-years and were adjusted for underenumeration and age misreporting with standard demographic methods. Migration was estimated with the GBD Bayesian demographic balancing model, after incorporating information about refugee migration into the model prior. Final population estimates used the cohort-component method of population projection, with inputs of fertility, mortality, and migration data. Population uncertainty was estimated by use of out-of-sample predictive validity testing. With these data, we estimated the trends in population by age and sex and in fertility by age between 1950 and 2017 in 195 countries and territories. Findings: From 1950 to 2017, TFRs decreased by 49·4% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 46·4–52·0). The TFR decreased from 4·7 livebirths (4·5–4·9) to 2·4 livebirths (2·2–2·5), and the ASFR of mothers aged 10–19 years decreased from 37 livebirths (34–40) to 22 livebirths (19–24) per 1000 women. Despite reductions in the TFR, the global population has been increasing by an average of 83·8 million people per year since 1985. The global population increased by 197·2% (193·3–200·8) since 1950, from 2·6 billion (2·5–2·6) to 7·6 billion (7·4–7·9) people in 2017; much of this increase was in the proportion of the global population in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The global annual rate of population growth increased between 1950 and 1964, when it peaked at 2·0%; this rate then remained nearly constant until 1970 and then decreased to 1·1% in 2017. Population growth rates in the southeast Asia, east Asia, and Oceania GBD super-region decreased from 2·5% in 1963 to 0·7% in 2017, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, population growth rates were almost at the highest reported levels ever in 2017, when they were at 2·7%. The global average age increased from 26·6 years in 1950 to 32·1 years in 2017, and the proportion of the population that is of working age (age 15–64 years) increased from 59·9% to 65·3%. At the national level, the TFR decreased in all countries and territories between 1950 and 2017; in 2017, TFRs ranged from a low of 1·0 livebirths (95% UI 0·9–1·2) in Cyprus to a high of 7·1 livebirths (6·8–7·4) in Niger. The TFR under age 25 years (TFU25; number of livebirths expected by age 25 years for a hypothetical woman who survived the age group and was exposed to current ASFRs) in 2017 ranged from 0·08 livebirths (0·07–0·09) in South Korea to 2·4 livebirths (2·2–2·6) in Niger, and the TFR over age 30 years (TFO30; number of livebirths expected for a hypothetical woman ageing from 30 to 54 years who survived the age group and was exposed to current ASFRs) ranged from a low of 0·3 livebirths (0·3–0·4) in Puerto Rico to a high of 3·1 livebirths (3·0–3·2) in Niger. TFO30 was higher than TFU25 in 145 countries and territories in 2017. 33 countries had a negative population growth rate from 2010 to 2017, most of which were located in central, eastern, and western Europe, whereas population growth rates of more than 2·0% were seen in 33 of 46 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2017, less than 65% of the national population was of working age in 12 of 34 high-income countries, and less than 50% of the national population was of working age in Mali, Chad, and Niger. Interpretation: Population trends create demographic dividends and headwinds (ie, economic benefits and detriments) that affect national economies and determine national planning needs. Although TFRs are decreasing, the global population continues to grow as mortality declines, with diverse patterns at the national level and across age groups. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide transparent and replicable estimates of population and fertility, which can be used to inform decision making and to monitor progress. Co and P involved Co-Pi and cobalt phosphide OER catalysts attracted tremendous attention, while limited report on cobalt phosphite as an OER catalyst. Herein, a novel cobalt phosphite nanowires with microporous 1D channel have been succsessfully discovered with remarkable catalytic performance of a low overpotential of (similar to)340 mV and Tafel slope of 60 mV dec(-1) at 10 mA cm(-2) at pH 14. Through comprehensive structural characterization, the effective species has been clearly illustrated to be the in-situ formed heterostructural Co-11(HPO3)(8)(OH)(6)/Co-11(PO3)(8)O-6 core-shell structure nanowires. This work fills the gap for exploring high efficient cobalt phosphites OER catalysts under akaline condition and paves the way for exploring novel high efficiency waster splitting catalysts.

  • Effect of Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) on safety performance : application of Empirical Bayes method
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban population and travel demand have been increasing rapidly. It presents a challenge to transport planners and engineers for alleviating traffic congestion and reducing accident risk. Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) is an innovative interchange design, which was first introduced in the United States in 2009, aiming to improve the operation and safety performances of freeway interchanges. DDI can accommodate high and unbalanced traffic volume on the arterial, by reducing the number of traffic signal phases and allowing unobstructed left turns for all traffic directions. DDI has been recognized as a cost-effective solution to congested freeway interchanges. However, few studies have investigated the safety effects of DDI. This paper aims to evaluate the change in crash risk of freeway interchanges after the introduction of DDI, using Empirical Bayes (EB) before and after comparison approach. In this study, the crash data of selected DDIs and traditional diamond interchanges (comparison group) in Utah was collected. The safety performance functions (SPF) were calibrated using the negative binomial model, based on the crash data of 26 comparison sites. Then, the crash modification factors for fatal and injury crash, property damage only (PDO) crash, and overall crash were estimated respectively. Moreover, effects of DDI on pedestrian and bicycle safety were also examined. Results indicated that there were significant crash reductions, regardless of crash severity level, at most of the DDIs under investigation, at the 5% level. For instances, reduction in fatal and injury crash was more remarkable.

  • Real-Time Scheduling and Analysis of OpenMP Task Systems with Tied Tasks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS). - : IEEE. - 9781538614143 ; , s. 92-103
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OpenMP is a promising framework for developing parallel real-time software on multi-cores. Although similar to the DAG task model, OpenMP task systems are significantly more difficult to analyze due to constraints posed by the OpenMP specification. An important feature in OpenMP is tied tasks, which must execute on the same thread during the whole life cycle. Although tied tasks enjoy benefits in simplicity and efficiency, it was considered to be not suitable to real-time systems due to its complex behavior. In this paper, we study the real-time scheduling and analysis of OpenMP task systems with tied tasks. First, we show that under the existing scheduling algorithms in OpenMP, tied tasks indeed may lead to extremely bad timing behaviors where the parallel workload is sequentially executed completely. To solve this problem, we proposed a new scheduling algorithm and developed two response time bounds for it, with different trade-off between simplicity and analysis precision. Experiments with both randomly generated OpenMP task systems and realistic OpenMP programs show that the response time bounds obtained by our approach for tied task systems are very close to that of untied tasks.

  • Investigation of Charge-Transfer Interaction in Mixed Stack Donor-Acceptor Cocrystals Toward Tunable Solid-State Emission Characteristics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 18:10, s. 6001-6008
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation of three mixed binary charge transfer (CT) cocrystals with tunable photoluminescence behavior featuring both CT interaction and directional hydrogen bonding is presented. Our strategy consists of the CT induced cocrystallization of three polycyclic (naphthalene, anthracene, and pyrene) carrying a-cyanostilbene (CS) derivatives, namely, 3-(naphthalene-2-yl)-2-(p-tolyl) acrylonitrile (NPA), 3-(anthracene-9-yl)-2-phenylacrylonitrile (APA), and 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(pyrene-I-yl) acrylonitrile (MPA) as donors (D) with 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) as an acceptor (A). The as prepared cocrystals were probed in detail by various analytical techniques, namely, X-ray diffraction data, vibrational spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence properties, and fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes, affirming the formation of CT complexes. Complex IA features a mixed stack arrangement (D-A-D-A-D), while IIA and IIIA revealed (DAD-DAD) stack arrangement. The CT products showed distinct tunable emission colors and photoluminescence characteristics, which is closely associated with the CT interactions between the donor and acceptor moiety, and ionization potential or the it pi-electron rich character of the polycyclic moiety of the donor molecule. This research demonstrates the development of new hybrid CT functional materials with enhanced optical properties such as absorption, fluorescence emissions, and lifetimes compared to the pristine donors, which is important for the exploration of new solid-state luminescent materials.

  • Collagen IV-conveyed signals can regulate chemokine production and promote liver metastasis
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Oncogene. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0950-9232 .- 1476-5594. ; 37:28, s. 3790-3805
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Liver metastases remain a major cause of death from gastrointestinal tract cancers as well as from other malignancies such as breast and lung carcinomas and melanoma. Understanding the underlying biology is essential for the design of effective targeted therapies. We previously reported that collagen IV α1/α2 overexpression in non-metastatic lung carcinoma (M27colIV) cells increased their metastatic ability, specifically to the liver and documented high collagen IV levels in surgical resections of liver metastases from diverse tumor types. Here, we aimed to elucidate the functional relevance of collagen IV to metastatic outgrowth in the liver. Gene expression profiling revealed in M27colIVcells significant increases in the expression of chemokines CCL5 (5.7-fold) and CCL7 (2.6-fold) relative to wild-type cells, and this was validated by qPCR and western blotting. Similarly, in human colon carcinoma KM12C and KM12SM cells with divergent liver-colonizing potentials, CCL7 and CCL5 production correlated with type IV collagen expression and the metastatic phenotype. CCL7 silencing by short hairpin RNA (shRNA) reduced experimental liver metastasis in both cell types, whereas CCL5 silencing reduced metastasis of M27colIV cells, implicating these cytokines in metastatic expansion in the liver. Subsequent functional analyses implicated both MEK/ERK and PI3K signaling upstream of CCL7 upregulation and identified CCL7 (but not CCL5) as a critical migration/invasion factor, acting via the chemokine receptor CCR3. Chemokine CCL5 was identified as a regulator of the T-cell immune response in the liver. Loss of CCL7 in KM12SM cells was also associated with altered E-cadherin and reduced vimentin and Snail expression, implicating it in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in these cells. Moreover, in clinical specimens of colon cancer liver metastases analyzed by immunohistochemistry, CCL5 and CCL7 levels paralleled those of collagen IV. The results identify the chemokines CCL5 and CCL7 as type IV collagen-regulated genes that promote liver metastasis by distinct and complementary mechanisms.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 10:11, s. 699-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organometal halide perovskites can be processed from solutions at low temperatures to form crystalline direct-bandgap semiconductors with promising optoelectronic properties(1-5). However, the efficiency of their electroluminescence is limited by non-radiative recombination, which is associated with defects and leakage current due to incomplete surface coverage(6-9). Here we demonstrate a solution-processed perovskite light-emitting diode (LED) based on self-organized multiple quantum wells (MQWs) with excellent film morphologies. The MQW-based LED exhibits a very high external quantum efficiency of up to 11.7%, good stability and exceptional highpower performance with an energy conversion efficiency of 5.5% at a current density of 100 mA cm(-2). This outstanding performance arises because the lower bandgap regions that generate electroluminescence are effectively confined by perovskite MQWs with higher energy gaps, resulting in very efficient radiative decay. Surprisingly, there is no evidence that the large interfacial areas between different bandgap regions cause luminescence quenching.

  • Meter-scale transparent conductive circuits based on silver nanowire networks for rigid and flexible transparent light-emitting diode screens
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Optical Materials Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 2159-3930. ; 9:12, s. 4483-4496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meter-scale transparent conductive circuits based on silver nanowire (AgNW) networks are fabricated for transparent light-emitting diode (LED) screens on both rigid and flexible substrates. A 25-cm long AgNW transparent conductive strip is fabricated with a strip resistivity of 9.95 Omega/cm. A high uniformity is achieved in terms of film optical transmission (up to 84.5% in average) and sheet resistance (as low as 4.7 Omega/sq in average), superior to ITO. A transparent LED screen based on a 1.2-m ultralong AgNW circuit is demonstrated with LEDs emitting bright red, green and blue lights under different biases. The AgNW strip on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate shows mechanical flexibility and stable performance in bending tests. Based on this, a flexible transparent LED screen is proposed and presented. It works well when dynamically bent to a radius as small as similar to 15 mm. Therefore, the AgNW transparent conductive circuits are very promising as a replacement to ITO circuits for such smart screens, to be integrated into modern glass architectures and display videos in various public places.

  • Diversity of the Gut Microbiota in Dihydrotestosterone-Induced PCOS Rats and the Pharmacologic Effects of Diane-35, Probiotics, and Berberine. : Gut Microbiota in Dihydrotestosterone-Induced PCOS Rats
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in microbiology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-302X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a frequent endocrine and metabolic syndrome in reproductive-age women. Recently, emerging evidence has shown that gut microbiota is closely related to metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and PCOS. In the present study, we established dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced PCOS rats and used Illumina MiSeq sequencing (PE300) to examine the composition, diversity, and abundance of the gut microbiota in PCOS. We compared the effects of three PCOS treatments: Diane-35 (estrogen and progesterone), probiotics and berberine. The DHT-induced rats showed constant estrous cycles, the loss of mature ovarian follicles, insulin resistance and obesity. The reproductive and metabolic functions in the PCOS rats were improved by treatment with Diane-35 and probiotics. Diane-35 and probiotics could restore the diversity of the gut microbiota, and the recovery of gut microbiota disorders improved the reproductive function in PCOS-like rats. However, berberine drastically reduced the species diversity and amount of gut microbiota and showed no improvement in PCOS. The findings of this study will help us to better understand the influence of the gut microbiota in the metabolic and reproductive alterations in PCOS as well as suggest opportunities for future personal dietary guidance for PCOS.

  • Extensive and drastically different alpine lake changes on Asia's high plateaus during the past four decades
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276. ; 44:1, s. 252-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Asia's high plateaus are sensitive to climate change and have been experiencing rapid warming over the past few decades. We found 99 new lakes and extensive lake expansion on the Tibetan Plateau during the last four decades, 1970–2013, due to increased precipitation and cryospheric contributions to its water balance. This contrasts with disappearing lakes and drastic shrinkage of lake areas on the adjacent Mongolian Plateau: 208 lakes disappeared and 75% of the remaining lakes have shrunk. We detected a statistically significant coincidental timing of lake area changes in both plateaus, associated with the climate regime shift that occurred during 1997/1998. This distinct change in 1997/1998 is thought to be driven by large-scale atmospheric circulation changes in response to climate warming. Our findings reveal that these two adjacent plateaus have been changing in opposite directions in response to climate change. These findings shed light on the complex role of the regional climate and water cycles, and provide useful information for ecological and water resource planning in these fragile landscapes.
