  • A New us Isomer in 136Sb Produced in the Projectile Fission of 238U
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - 1434-6001. ; 11, s. 9-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-rich isotope Sb-136 has been produced following the relativistic projectile fission of U-238 in an experiment performed at the Fragment Separator at GSI, Darmstadt. Delayed gamma -ray spectroscopy of the fission products has been performed after isotope separation. A new isomeric state in Sb-136 has been populated, and its lifetime measured as T-1/2 = 565(50) ns. Realistic and empirical shell-model calculations have been performed and are compared to the experimental observables.

  • A train traffic operation and planning simulator
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Computers in Railways VII. - : WITPress, Southampton. - 1853128260 ; , s. 241-248
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of the project presented in this paper has been to develop a newsimulator system that can contribute to improved methods for train trafficplanning and operation and to create an experimental environment for developmentof new control support systems and operator user interfaces. The newsimulator system is based on a previously developed simulation kernel,SIMON/TTS, which has been used by the Swedish National Rail Administrationfor off line planning experiments. The SIMON/TTS system has now beenredesigned into an interactive, real-time simulator where external control andpresentation systems can be connected via a communication module. Thesimulator system will be used for different purposes. Some of the most importantexperimental scenarios are to perform experiment with new user interfaces fortrain traffic control operators, to test the usefulness of decision support systemsfor train dispatchers, to evaluate alternative strategies for solving conflicts intrain traffic control and to provide a simulator environment for education andtraining of train traffic operators.

  • The stromal reaction in basal cell carcinomas : A prerequisite for tumour progression and treatment strategy
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Plastic Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 0007-1226 .- 1465-3087. ; 57:5, s. 429-439
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Specimens of basal cell carcinomas collected from 28 patients were classified into three groups: superficial, nodular, and infiltrative, according to their microarchitecture. The specimens were then subjected to histological characterization by means of a biotinylated hyaluronan-binding probe (HABP). By using Ki-67 and PCNA the proliferative activity of the BCC tumours was evaluated with immunohistological techniques. In superficial BCC the tumour islands displayed moderate hyaluronan (HA) staining. Feeble proliferation, denoted by modest mitotic activity and weak Ki-67 and PCNA immunoreactivity, occurred within the tumour islands. The surrounding connective tissue resembled normal skin, and no differentiated tumour stroma was observed. In nodular BCC, the HA staining of the tumour strands was weak to moderate, denoting increased proliferative activity. The differentiated surrounding tumour stroma stained strongly for HA. Tumour islands of infiltrative BCC stained weakly to moderately to HA and evidenced intense proliferation. The intensely HA-stained tumour stroma ended abruptly and the adjacent areas were almost devoid of HA. This study showed that the proliferative activity of BCC cells is associated with increased expression of HA in the tumour stroma. Modification of tumour-associated connective tissue indicates a close relationship between the tumour cells and the adjacent matrix. In particular, in infiltrative BCC, such alterations include degeneration and possible modification and remodelling of the surrounding extracellular matrix. These processes involving areas of probable importance for tumour progression, should be considered when deciding the extent of intended surgical resection.

  • Pharmacokinetic profile of orexin A and effects on plasma insulin and glucagon in the rat
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Regulatory Peptides. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-0115 .- 1873-1686. ; 119:3, s. 209-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Orexin A (OXA) is found in the central nervous system (CNS) and in the gut. Peripheral administration of OXA to rats results in an inhibition of fasting motility. Plasma OXA increases during fasting and central administration of OXA increases food intake. The aim of the present study was to assess the pharmacokinetic profile of OXA and the effect of intravenously (IV) administered OXA on plasma concentrations of insulin and glucagon concentrations. Rats were given OXA IV (100 pmol kg-1 min-1) for time periods of 0, 10, 20, 30 min and for 10, 20, 30 min after ceasing a 30-min infusion. After each time period, rats were then sacrificed and blood obtained. OXA was also administered at increasing doses (0, 100, 300 and 500 pmol kg-1 min-1) for 30 min and blood was obtained. Plasma OXA, insulin and glucagon levels were measured using commercially available radioimmunoassay (RIA) kits. The plasma half-life of OXA was 27.1±9.5 min. Stepwise increasing infusion rates of OXA confirmed a linear concentration-time curve and thus first-order kinetics. Its volume of distribution indicated no binding to peripheral tissues. Plasma glucagon decreased during infusion of OXA, while insulin was unaffected. Plasma OXA was raised fourfold after food intake. Thus, OXA has a longer plasma half-life than many other peptides found in the gut. This needs to be taken into account when assessing effects of OXA on biological parameters after peripheral administration.reserved.

  • Collector test method under quasi dynamic conditions according to the European Standard EN 12975-2
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0038-092X. ; 76, s. 117-123
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In April 2001 the new European Standard EN 12975:2000: ''Thermal solar systems and components--Solar Collectors'' was established. With the publication of this European standard all national standards, related to the same topic, have to be withdrawn by the nations of the European Community. Now only one standard for testing solar collectors is valid throughout Europe. This European Standard specifies test methods for validating the durability, reliability and safety requirements for liquid heating collectors. The standard also includes two alternative test methods for the thermal performance characterization for liquid heating collectors. Apart from the well-known test method under steady-state conditions according to ISO 9806-1, ISO 9806-3 and ASHRAE 93-77 the EN 12975 permits a quasi-dynamic test method for the thermal performance characterization of solar thermal collectors. This paper presents the improved approach to outdoor performance testing of solar thermal collectors under quasi-dynamic test conditions. The test requirements and collector theory are closely connected to those long agreed on for steady-state testing, as described in the ISO and ASHRAE standards mentioned above. The most important effects for the all day performance of the collector are taken into account. The test method covers most collector designs on the market today (except ICS type). Only some correction terms are added to the basic collector models of the present steady-state test methods. Still this limited change will allow test data to be collected and used from whole days.An important fact is that the collector model used for the parameter identification is written so that the error in collector output power is minimized. Therefore an accurate long-term prediction of the collector performance can be an integral part of the test method, where the same collector model and parameters are used for both testing and prediction.

  • The impact of optical and thermal properties on the performance of flat plate solar collectors
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy. - 0960-1481. ; 28:3, s. 331-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of the optical properties on the annual performance of flat plate collectors in a Swedish climate has been estimated with the MINSUN program. The collector parameters were determined with a theoretically based calculation program verified from laboratory measurements. The importance of changes in solar absorptance and thermal emittance of the absorber, the addition of a teflon film or a teflon honeycomb, antireflection treatment of the, cover glazing and combinations of these improvements were investigated. The results show that several improvements can be achieved for solar thermal absorbers. A combined increase in absorptance from 0.95 to 0.97 and a decrease in emittance from 0.10 to 0.05 increase the annual performance with 6.7% at 50 degreesC operating temperature. The increase in performance by installing a teflon film as second glazing was estimated to 5.6% at 50 degreesC. If instead a teflon honeycomb is installed, a twice as high performance increase is obtained, 12.1 %. Antireflection treatment of the cover glazing increases the annual output with 6.5% at 50 degreesC. A combination of absorber improvements together with a teflon honeycomb and an antireflection treated glazing results in a total increase of 24.6% at 50 degreesC. Including external booster reflectors increases the expected annual output at 50 degreesC to 19.9-29.4% depending on reflector material. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Hearing assessment of classical orchestral musicians.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian audiology. - 0105-0397. ; 30:1, s. 13-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pure-tone audiometry was performed on 140 classical orchestral musicians employed at the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Opera in Sweden. This report is based on the results from hearing threshold measurements, presented as median audiograms according to gender, age group and instrument group. The results did not show severe hearing losses that could be attributed to exposure to musical noise. However, the study reflects the subjects' present hearing ability status and does not give an answer to the question of future hearing dysfunction. Female musicians were shown to have significantly better hearing thresholds in the high-frequency area than did male musicians. Furthermore, the median pure-tone hearing thresholds for the male musicians displayed a notch configuration at 6 kHz in the left ear, similar that of to noise-induced hearing loss. A small, but in general not significant, difference was detected when comparing the median hearing thresholds between each instrument group. Percussion and woodwind players displayed slightly worse hearing thresholds than did other musicians. Players of large string instruments had the best hearing threshold values. When comparing age groups and gender it was noted that the median hearing thresholds were stable and within 20 dB HL up to the age group of 40-49 years for both females and males.

  • Hearing development in classical orchestral musicians. A follow-up study.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian audiology. - 0105-0397. ; 30:3, s. 141-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using pure tone audiometry in 1995, a hearing reassessment was made in 56 classical musicians who participated in Axelsson & Lindgren's study 16 years earlier, in 1979. This study focuses on hearing development in these classical orchestra musicians, active in Göteborg, Sweden. The aim of the study is to evaluate the risk of progressive hearing loss during work in a classical orchestra. Another aim is to study possible hearing differences in females and males and to compare the high frequency pure-tone average values found in the study with two normal materials. The main findings were that the male, compared to the female musicians, showed a tendency toward a more pronounced, although not significant, hearing reduction in the high frequency region and higher threshold distribution within the 90th percentile than the females. This was found most often in the left ear. The median audiogram for all females showed a notch configuration at 6 kHz, compared to the males who had a high-tone sloping configuration. When comparing high frequency pure-tone average (HFPTA) values with ISO 7029, the females are distributed around the ISO 7029 median and well within the 90th percentile. The average among the males was equal with the median. Comparison with Davis normal population "all the sample, overall occupational group" showed a more even distribution of the HFPTA values around the median for both females and males on both occasions. This follow-up study showed no extended negative progress of the pure-tone hearing threshold values in spite of an additional 16 years of musical noise exposure.

  • Evaluation of screening procedures for congenital cataracts.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Acta paediatrica (Oslo, Norway : 1992). - : Wiley. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 92:12, s. 1468-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of two different Swedish screening procedures for early detection of congenital cataracts in comparison with no screening. METHODS: Children born between January 1992 and December 1998 in Swedish regions with an established eye-screening routine procedure, diagnosed with congenital cataract, and operated on before 1 y of age, were included in a retrospective study. Age at referral and age at time of the operation were compared between regions using different screening procedures: screening in the maternity wards (Region 1), at the well-baby clinics (Region 2) and one region without any screening (Region 3). RESULTS: Seventy-two children were included in the study. Concerning early diagnosis and surgery, Region 1 differed significantly from Regions 2 and 3, which were more similar and were combined for further analysis. The difference in detected cases was greatest at 21 d of age (55% vs 18%; p < 0.001), but persisted even at 100 d of age (78% vs 64%; p < 0.02). Region 1 screening resulted in more and earlier cases detected than the other two regions (22 vs 15 per 100,000 births). In 72% of all cases, surgery was performed in response to referrals from either the maternity wards (36%), or the well-baby clinics (36%). However, half of the cases from the well-baby clinics were detected too late, i.e. at > 100 d. CONCLUSION: Eye screening in the maternity ward is preferable to well-baby clinic screening and to no screening at all, since it leads to early detection. Screening should also be performed routinely at well-baby clinics within the period when successful treatment is possible.

  • Imported rocket salad partly responsible for increased incidence of hepatitis A cases in Sweden, 2000-2001
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Euro surveillance : bulletin Europeen sur les maladies transmissibles = European communicable disease bulletin. - : European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC). - 1560-7917. ; 6:10, s. 151-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increased incidence of domestic hepatitis A without any obvious source of infection in Sweden and a small outbreak in late spring 2001 led to the undertaking of a case-control study. Consumption of imported rocket salad was clearly associated with disease (odds ratio 9.1, 95% confidence interval 1.5 to 69). The importation of vegetables from countries where hepatitis A is endemic to countries where this disease is not endemic continues to be a public health problem.
