  • Spherical proton-neutron structure of isomeric states in Cd-128
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 79:1, s. 011301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma-ray decay of isomeric states in the even-even nucleus Cd-128 has been observed. The nucleus of interest was produced both by the fragmentation of Xe-136 and the fission of U-238 primary beams. The level scheme was unambiguously constructed based on.. coincidence relations in conjunction with detailed lifetime analysis employed for the first time on this nucleus. Large-scale shell-model calculations, without consideration of excitations across the N = 82 shell closure, were performed and provide a consistent description of the experimental level scheme. The structure of the isomeric states and their decays exhibit coexistence of proton, neutron, and strongly mixed configurations due to p. interaction in overlapping orbitals for both proton and neutron holes.

  • Evolution of the N=82 Shell Gap below 132Sn Inferred from Core Excited States in 131In
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 672:4-5, s. 313-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma-ray decay of ail excited state in In-131, the one proton hole neighbor of the doubly magic (132)sn has been measured. A high-spin, core-excited isomer with T-1/2 = 630(60) us was identified following production by both relativistic fragmentation of a Xe-136 beam and fission Of a U-238 beam. This state deexcites by a single gamma-ray branch of 3782(2) keV from which direct evidence for the size of the N = 82 shell gal) is inferred. The results are discussed in comparison to a shell-model Calculation including configurations across the closed shells at N = 82 and Z = 50. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • RISING: Gamma‐ray Spectroscopy with Radioactive Beams at GSI
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 0094-243X. - 9780735413283 ; 891, s. 99-107
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI (RISING) project is a major pan‐European collaboration. Its physics aims are the studies of exotic nuclear matter with abnormal proton‐to‐neutron ratios compared with naturally occurring isotopes. RISING combines the FRagment Separator (FRS) which allows relativistic energies and projectile fragmentation reactions with EUROBALL Ge Cluster detectors for γ spectroscopic research. The RISING setup can be used in two different configurations. Either the nuclei of interest are investigated after being stopped or the heavy ions hit a secondary target at relativistic energies and the thereby occurring excitations are studied. For the latter case, MINIBALL Ge detectors and the HECTOR array are used in addition. Example achievements of the Fast Beam setup are presented and compared to various shell model calculations, while for the Stopped Beam setup initial results are shown.

  • Isomeric Decay Studies Around 204Pt and 148Tb
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal. Special Topics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1951-6355 .- 1951-6401. ; 150, s. 165-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relativistic energy projectile fragmentation of Pb-208 has been used to produce a range of exotic nuclei. The nuclei of interest were studied by detecting delayed gamma rays following the decay of isomeric states. Experimental information on the excited states of the neutron-rich N = 126 nucleus, Pt-204, following internal decay of two isomeric states, was obtained for the first time. In addition, decays from the previously reported isomeric I=27h and I=(49/2)h states in Tb-148 and Gd-147, respectively, have been observed. These isomeric decays represent the highest spin discrete states observed to date following a projectile fragmentation reaction, and opens further the possibility of doing 'high-spin physics' using this technique.

  • Exciting Isomers from the First Stopped-beam RISING Campaign
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal. Special Topics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1951-6355 .- 1951-6401. ; 150, s. 173-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First results are reported from a major new initiative of experiments, which focus on nuclear structure studies at extreme isospin values by means of isomer spectroscopy. The experiments represent the first part of the so-called stopped-beam campaign within the Rare ISotope INvestigations at GSI (RISING) project. Time-correlated gamma decays from individually identified nuclear species have been measured, allowing the clean identification of isomeric decays in a wide range of exotic nuclei both at the proton drip-line and in heavy, neutron-rich systems. An overview of the experimental technique will be given, together with the performance of the new germanium detector array and future research plans for the collaboration.

  • Energy intake and sources of energy intake in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5640 .- 0954-3007. ; 63:4s, s. 3-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To describe energy intake and its macronutrient and food sources among 27 regions in 10 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Methods: Between 1995 and 2000, 36 034 subjects aged 35-74 years were administered a standardized 24-h dietary recall. Intakes of macronutrients (g/day) and energy (kcal/day) were estimated using standardized national nutrient databases. Mean intakes were weighted by season and day of the week and were adjusted for age, height and weight, after stratification by gender. Extreme low- and high-energy reporters were identified using Goldberg's cutoff points (ratio of energy intake and estimated basal metabolic rate <0.88 or >2.72), and their effects on macronutrient and energy intakes were studied. Results: Low-energy reporting was more prevalent in women than in men. The exclusion of extreme-energy reporters substantially lowered the EPIC-wide range in mean energy intake from 2196-2877 to 2309-2866 kcal among men. For women, these ranges were 1659-2070 and 1873-2108 kcal. There was no north-south gradient in energy intake or in the prevalence of low-energy reporting. In most centres, cereals and cereal products were the largest contributors to energy intake. The food groups meat, dairy products and fats and oils were also important energy sources. In many centres, the highest mean energy intakes were observed on Saturdays. Conclusions: These data highlight and quantify the variations and similarities in energy intake and sources of energy intake among 10 European countries. The prevalence of low-energy reporting indicates that the study of energy intake is hampered by the problem of underreporting. • Following a brief review of strained silicon technology options, this paper presents results and analysis of strained Si n-channel MOSFETs fabricated on thin SiGe virtual substrates. Significant improvements in electrical performance are demonstrated compared with Si control devices. The impact of SiGe device self-heating is compared for strained Si MOSFETs fabricated on thin and thick virtual substrates. The work demonstrates that by using high quality thin virtual substrates the compromised performance enhancements commonly observed in short gate length MOSFETs and high bias conditions due to self-heating in conventional thick virtual substrate devices are eradicated.

  • Isospin Symmetry and Proton Decay: Identification of the 10+ Isomer in 54Ni
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 78:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma decays from an isomeric 10+ state at 6457 keV in the nucleus 54Ni have been identified using the GSI fragment separator in conjunction with the RISING Ge-detector array. The state is interpreted as the isobaric analog of the 6527-keV 10+ isomer in 54Fe. The results are discussed in terms of isospin-dependent shell-model calculations. Clear evidence is presented for a discrete l = 5 proton decay branch into the first excited 9/2- state of the daughter 53Co. This decay is the first of its kind observed following projectile fragmentation reactions.

    • The FRS-RISING set-up at GSI uses secondary radioactive beams at relativistic energies for nuclear structure studies. At GSI the fragmentation or fission of stable primary beams up to U-238 provide secondary beams with sufficient intensity to perform gamma-ray spectroscopy. The RISING set-up is described and results of the first RISING campaign are presented. New experimental methods at relativistic energies are being investigated. Future experiments focus on state-of-the art nuclear structure physics covering exotic nuclei all over the nuclear chart.

  • Increased dietary intake of omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids reduces pathological retinal angiogenesis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nat Med. - 1078-8956.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many sight-threatening diseases have two critical phases, vessel loss followed by hypoxia-driven destructive neovascularization. These diseases include retinopathy of prematurity and diabetic retinopathy, leading causes of blindness in childhood and middle age affecting over 4 million people in the United States. We studied the influence of omega-3- and omega-6-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on vascular loss, vascular regrowth after injury, and hypoxia-induced pathological neovascularization in a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy. We show that increasing omega-3-PUFA tissue levels by dietary or genetic means decreased the avascular area of the retina by increasing vessel regrowth after injury, thereby reducing the hypoxic stimulus for neovascularization. The bioactive omega-3-PUFA-derived mediators neuroprotectinD1, resolvinD1 and resolvinE1 also potently protected against neovascularization. The protective effect of omega-3-PUFAs and their bioactive metabolites was mediated, in part, through suppression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha. This inflammatory cytokine was found in a subset of microglia that was closely associated with retinal vessels. These findings indicate that increasing the sources of omega-3-PUFA or their bioactive products reduces pathological angiogenesis. Western diets are often deficient in omega-3-PUFA, and premature infants lack the important transfer from the mother to the infant of omega-3-PUFA that normally occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. Supplementing omega-3-PUFA intake may be of benefit in preventing retinopathy.

  • The incretin hormones GIP and GLP-1 in diabetic rats : effects on insulin secretion and small bowel motility
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Neurogastroenterology and Motility. - : Wiley. - 1350-1925 .- 1365-2982. ; 21:3, s. 313-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Incretin hormones often display inhibitory actions on gut motility. The aim of this study was to investigate if altered responsiveness to glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) as regards insulin release and small bowel motility could bring further clarity to the pathophysiology of diabetes in the Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat. The isolated perfused pancreas was studied in male GK and Wistar rats (controls) under euglycemic and hyperglycemic conditions. Glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (10 nmol L−1) or GLP-1 (10 nmol L−1) were added to the medium and perfusate was collected and analysed for insulin. Moreover, GK and Wistar rats were supplied with bipolar electrodes in the small bowel and myoelectric activity was recorded during intravenous administration of GIP (1–400 pmol kg−1 min−1) or GLP-1 (0.1–20 pmol kg−1 min−1). Finally, tissue was collected from GK and Wistar rats for RNA extraction. Under euglycemia, GIP and GLP-1 stimulated the initial insulin response by 10-fold in GK rats (P < 0.05). At later hyperglycemia, the insulin response to GIP and GLP-1 was blunted to about one-third compared with controls (P < 0.05). In the bowel GLP-1 was about 2.6–16.7 times more potent than GIP in abolishing the migrating myoelectric complex in the GK and control rats. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed GIP and GLP-1 receptor gene expression in pancreatic islets and in small bowel. The initially high, but later low insulin responsiveness to stimulation with GIP and GLP-1 along with inhibition of small bowel motility in the GK rat indicates a preserved incretin response on motility in diabetes type 2.

  • Ghrelin receptor agonist (TZP-101) accelerates gastric emptying in adults with diabetes and symptomatic gastroparesis
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. - : Wiley. - 0269-2813 .- 1365-2036. ; 29:11, s. 1179-1187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: TZP-101 is a synthetic, selective ghrelin agonist in development for gastroparesis. AIM: To assess safety and effects of TZP-101 in diabetes patients with symptomatic gastroparesis. METHODS: Adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus received placebo and TZP-101 (80, 160, 320 or 600 microg/kg) infusions in a cross-over manner following a radiolabelled meal. Blood glucose levels were stabilized using a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp. Primary endpoints were gastric half emptying and latency times. Secondary measures included assessment of gastroparesis symptoms and endocrine responses. RESULTS: Ten patients with type 1 (n = 7) or 2 (n = 3) diabetes, moderate-to-severe gastroparesis symptoms and > or =29% retention 4 h after a radiolabelled solid meal were enrolled. TZP-101 produced significant reductions in solid meal half-emptying (20%, P = 0.043) and latency (34%, P = 0.037) times vs. placebo. Reductions in overall postmeal symptom intensity (24%) and postprandial fullness (37%) following TZP-101 infusion were not statistically significant. Most adverse events were mild and self-limiting and there were no identifiable differences in numbers or types of adverse events between TZP-101 and placebo. CONCLUSIONS: This proof-of-concept study demonstrates that the ghrelin agonist TZP-101 is well-tolerated in diabetes patients with moderate-to-severe chronic gastroparesis and shows statistically significant improvements in gastric emptying.

    • Strained Si HBTs have been demonstrated for the first time with a maximum current gain (P) of 3700 using a relaxed Si(0.85)Ge(0.15) virtual substrate, Si(0.7)Ge(0.3) base and strained Si emitter. This represents 10x and 27x larger gain compared with pseudomorphic SiGe HBTs and Si control BJTs which were manufactured in parallel and had current gains of 334 and 135, respectively. The strained Si HBTs exhibited satisfactory breakdown voltage (2.5 V) compared with SiGe HBTs (2.7 V) and Si BJTs (4.5 V) and excellent control of collector off-state leakage (< 20 fA).

  • Evidence for an Isomeric 3/2- State in 53Co
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 36:2, s. 131-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragmentation of a 550MeV/u primary beam of Ni-58 on a Be-9 target has been used to measure time-and energy-correlated gamma decays following the implantation of event-by-event discriminated secondary fragments into a Be-9 stopper plate. A new isomeric gamma decay with T-1/2 = 14(6 4) ns and E-gamma = 646.2(2) keV is observed and attributed to the decay of the yrast 3/2-state in Co-53(27)26. This short-lived isomeric state has been populated by means of nuclear reactions during the stopping process of the secondary fragments. The experimental findings are discussed in the framework of large-scale spherical shell model calculations in conjunction with isospin symmetry-breaking residual interactions for the A = 53, Tz = +/- 1/2 mirror nuclei Co-53 and Fe-53.

  • GSK962040 : a small molecule, selective motilin receptor agonist, effective as a stimulant of human and rabbit gastrointestinal motility
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Neurogastroenterology and Motility. - : Wiley. - 1350-1925 .- 1365-2982. ; 21:6, s. 657-664, e30-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is an urgent clinical need for a safe, efficacious stimulant of gastric emptying; current therapies include erythromycin (an antibiotic with additional properties which preclude chronic use) and metoclopramide (a 5-hydroxytryptamine type 4 receptor agonist and an antagonist at brain D2 receptors, associated with movement disorders). To move away from the complex motilide structure of erythromycin, a small molecule motilin receptor agonist, GSK962040, was identified and characterized. The compound was evaluated using recombinant human receptors, rabbit and human isolated stomach preparations known to respond to motilin and in vivo, by measuring its ability to increase defecation in conscious rabbits. At the human motilin receptor, the pEC50 (the negative logarithm to base 10 of the EC50 value, the concentration of agonist that produces 50% of the maximal response) values for GSK962040 and erythromycin as agonists were, respectively, 7.9 and 7.3; GSK962040 had no significant activity at a range of other receptors (including ghrelin), ion channels and enzymes. In rabbit gastric antrum, GSK962040 300 nmol L−1–10 μmol L−1 caused a prolonged facilitation of the amplitude of cholinergically mediated contractions, to a maximum of 248 ± 47% at 3 μmol L−1. In human-isolated stomach, GSK962040 10 μmol L−1, erythromycin 10 μmol L−1 and [Nle13]-motilin 100 nmol L−1, each caused muscle contraction of similar amplitude. In conscious rabbits, intravenous doses of 5 mg kg−1 GSK962040 or 10 mg kg−1 erythromycin significantly increased faecal output over a 2-h period. Together, these data show that GSK962040, a non-motilide structure, selectively activates the motilin receptor. Simplification of the structural requirements to activate this receptor greatly facilitates the design of potentially new medicines for gastroparesis.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5640 .- 0954-3007. ; 63:4s, s. 226-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Dietary supplement use is increasing, but there are few comparable data on supplement intakes and how they affect the nutrition and health of European consumers. The aim of this study was to describe the use of dietary supplements in subsamples of the 10 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Methods: Specific questions on dietary supplement use were asked as a part of single 24-h recalls performed on 36 034 men and women aged 35-74 years from 1995 to 2000. Results: Between countries, the mean percentage of dietary supplement use varied almost 10-fold among women and even more among men. There was a clear north-south gradient in use, with a higher consumption in northern countries. The lowest crude mean percentage of use was found in Greece (2.0% among men, 6.7% among women), and the highest was in Denmark (51.0% among men, 65.8% among women). Use was higher in women than in men. Vitamins, minerals or combinations of them were the predominant types of supplements reported, but there were striking differences between countries. Conclusions: This study indicates that there are wide variations in supplement use in Europe, which may affect individual and population nutrient intakes. The results underline the need to monitor consumption of dietary supplements in Europe, as well as to evaluate the risks and benefits. • Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a neural correlate of the preattentive detection of any change in the acoustic characteristics of sounds. Here we provide evidence that violations of a purely phonological constraint in a listener's native language can also elicit the brain's automatic change-detection response. The MMN differed between Finnish and Estonian listeners, conditions being equal except for the native language of the listeners. We used two experimental conditions: synthetic vowels in isolation and the same vowels embedded in a pseudo-word context. MMN responses to isolated vowels were similar for Finns and Estonians, while the same vowels in a pseudoword context elicited different MMN patterns depending on the listener's mother tongue.

    • This study examined the effect of gender and facial characteristics of criminal offenders on attributions of crime-relevant traits. The stimulus pictures portrayed women and men of varying attractiveness. Participants were presented with pictures of these female or male faces along with accompanying crime accounts. The crime account described the individual in the picture as a person who had committed one of the following crimes: theft, fraud, drug crime, child molestation, child abuse, or homicide. After reading one case account the participants were asked to evaluate the credibility and other crime-relevant personality traits of the offender. Results showed that female defendants were rated more favourably than were male defendants. Gender worked to the advantage of the female perpetrator. There were also slight tendencies towards more lenient appraisal of the more attractive women.

    • The unbound isotopes 10Li, 12Li and 13Li have been observed after nucleon-knockout reactions at relativistic energies with 11Li and 14Be beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The channels , and were analysed in the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. The 10Li data confirm earlier findings, while the 12Li and 13Li nuclei were observed for the first time. The relative-energy spectrum shows that the ground state of 12Li can be described as a virtual s-state with a scattering length of -13.7(1.6) fm. A broad energy spectrum was found for the channel. Based on the assumption that the relative-energy spectrum is dominated by a correlated background presumably stemming from initial correlations in the 14Be ground-state, evidence for a 13Li resonance at 1.47(31) MeV above the threshold with a width around 2 MeV has been found.

  • Characteristics of timed barium esophagogram in newly diagnosed idiopathic achalasia: clinical and manometric correlates
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiol. - : SAGE Publications. - 0284-1851 .- 1600-0455. ; 48:1, s. 2-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To describe timed barium esophagogram (TBE) characteristics in patients with newly diagnosed idiopathic achalasia, and to correlate these with clinical and manometric variables. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-six consecutive patients with newly diagnosed achalasia were examined with TBE. Esophageal emptying was assessed using the height, area, and volume of the barium column. Subjective evaluation was performed according to a standardized protocol in all patients. Objective diagnostic evaluation included manometry. RESULTS: At the 1-min time point after contrast ingestion, the static parameters median height, maximum, and mean width of the barium column were 16.0, 4.4, and 3.3 cm, respectively. Emptying, expressed as volume of barium, showed significant inverse correlation with the resting and the maximal relaxing pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) (R = -0.34 and R = -0.54, respectively). There was also an inverse correlation between emptied volume at TBE and the duration of symptoms (R = -0.36), and between barium column width and postprandial chest pain (R = -0.44). CONCLUSION: All patients with newly diagnosed achalasia presented with delayed emptying of barium the esophagus at TBE. The estimated emptied volume of barium (related to the ingested volume) correlated inversely with the basal tone and the relaxation pressure of the LES. Including estimation of the volume of emptied barium at TBE resulted in closer correlation with manometric values of LES tone than using the parameters traditionally recorded.

    • PURPOSE: To investigate strabismus, head posture, nystagmus, stereoacuity, ocular motility, near point of convergence (NPC) and accommodative convergence to accommodation ratio (AC/A) in a sample of Swedish children. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out on 143 children, 4-15 years of age. RESULTS: Heterotropia was found in five children (3.5%), four with esotropia and one with exotropia. One child with esotropia had a slight overaction of both inferior oblique muscles. Heterophoria was found in 37 children (26%) at near and/or distance fixation and it was four times more common at near than at distance. In 29 children, heterophoria was found at one distance only and orthophoria at the other. Orthophoria at both near and distance fixation was noted in 101 children (70.5%). The near point of convergence was < or =6 cm in 97% of the children and 97% had stereoacuity of 60" or better. In the whole group, the median AC/A ratio calculated with the heterophoria method was 5.6/1 prism diopters/diopters (PD/D) and with the gradient method, 1.3/1 PD/D. No anomalous head postures or nystagmus were observed and all children had normal versions. CONCLUSION: In this study, 143 well-defined children were investigated with a battery of accurately described tests, commonly used in clinical practice. These results are in agreement with those of other studies examining one or few variables in larger populations and the authors therefore conclude that their results may be used for comparisons with different patient groups.

    • Relativistic projectile fragmentation of Pb-208 has been used to produce isomers in neutron-rich, A approximate to 190 nuclides. A forward-focusing spectrometer provided ion-by-ion mass and charge identification. The detection of gamma-rays emitted by stopped ions has led to the assignment of isomers in Ta-188, W-190, Re-192, Re-193, Os-195, Ir-197, Ir-198, Pt-200, Pt-201, Pt-202 and Au-203, with half-lives ranging from approximately 10 ns to 1 ms. Tentative isomer information has been found also for Er-174, Er-175, Hf-185, Re-191, Re-194 and Ir-199. In most cases, time-correlated, singles gamma-ray events provided the first spectroscopic data on excited states for each nuclide. In Pt-200 and Pt-201. the assignments are supported by gamma-gamma coincidences. Isomeric ratios provide additional information, such as half-life and transition energy constraints in particular cases. The level structures of the platinum isotopes are discussed, and comparisons are made with isomer systematics.

  • Periodontal health status in Swedish adolescents: an epidemiological, cross-sectional study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - 0347-9994. ; 33:(3), s. 131-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this epidemiological survey was to analyze the periodontal conditions of 19-year old individuals in two rural county areas, i.e. Fyrbodal and Skaraborg, Västra Götaland, Sweden, with special reference to gender and socioeconomic grouping. A randomized sample of 506 individuals (Fyrbodal 250 and Skaraborg 256 individuals, respectively) was clinically examined with regard to oral hygiene, gingivitis, periodontal pockets and gingival recession. Bitewing radiographs were used for assessment of alveolar bone level (ABL) and dental calculus. A questionnaire-based interview regarding oral hygiene habits was included. A majority of the subjects (76%) claimed to brush their teeth at least twice a day, while interdental hygiene means were used daily by 4%. The subjects showed a mean plaque score of 47% and a gingivitis score of 56%. Forty-six % of the adolescents had a plaque score of > or = 50%, whereas the corresponding figure for gingivitis was 62%. The subjects had on average 5.5 teeth with facial gingival recession. The mean prevalence of sites with probing depth (PPD) of > or = 4 mm was 8, out of which 99% were located at proximal sites. A radiographic bone level of > 2 mm was observed at on average 0.4 teeth per subject. Logistic regression analyses revealed that gender (males) and county area (Fyrbodal) were significant factors for a high plaque and gingivitis score. There was no significant difference in periodontal conditions in relation to socio-economic grouping. In conclusion, the survey revealed higher prevalence of plaque and gingivitis among male than female adolescents, but no differences between socioeconomic groups.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To describe dietary protein intakes and their food sources among 27 redefined centres in 10 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Methods: Between 1995 and 2000, 36 034 persons, aged between 35 and 74 years, were administered a standardized 24-h dietary recall (24-HDR) using a computerized interview software programme (EPIC-SOFT). Intakes (g/day) of total, animal and plant proteins were estimated using the standardized EPIC Nutrient Database (ENDB). Mean intakes were adjusted for age, and weighted by season and day of recall. Results: Mean total and animal protein intakes were highest in the Spanish centres among men, and in the Spanish and French centres among women; the lowest mean intakes were observed in the UK health-conscious group, in Greek men and women, and in women in Potsdam. Intake of plant protein was highest among the UK health-conscious group, followed by some of the Italian centres and Murcia, whereas Sweden and Potsdam had the lowest intake. Cereals contributed to the highest proportion of plant protein in all centres. The combined intake of legumes, vegetables and fruit contributed to a greater proportion of plant protein in the southern than in the northern centres. Total meat intake (with some heterogeneity across subtypes of meat) was, with few exceptions, the most important contributor to animal protein in all centres, followed by dairy and fish products. Conclusions: This study shows that intake of protein, especially of animal origin, differs across the 10 European countries, and also shows some differences in food sources of protein across Europe. • Responses of muscle spindles in feline dorsal neck muscles to electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve.

  • Ingår i: Experimental Brain Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0014-4819 .- 1432-1106. ; 165:3, s. 328-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies performed in jaw muscles of rabbits and rats have demonstrated that sympathetic outflow may affect the activity of muscle spindle afferents (MSAs). The resulting impairment of MSA information has been suggested to be involved in the genesis and spread of chronic muscle pain. The present study was designed to investigate sympathetic influences on muscle spindles in feline trapezius and splenius muscles (TrSp), as these muscles are commonly affected by chronic pain in humans. Experiments were carried out in cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. The effect of electrical stimulation (10 Hz for 90 s or 3 Hz for 5 min) of the peripheral stump of the cervical sympathetic nerve (CSN) was investigated on the discharge of TrSp MSAs (units classified as Ia-like and II-like) and on their responses to sinusoidal stretching of these muscles. In some of the experiments, the local microcirculation of the muscles was monitored by laser Doppler flowmetry. In total, 46 MSAs were recorded. Stimulation of the CSN at 10 Hz powerfully depressed the mean discharge rate of the majority of the tested MSAs (73%) and also affected the sensitivity of MSAs to sinusoidal changes of muscle length, which were evaluated in terms of amplitude and phase of the sinusoidal fitting of unitary activity. The amplitude was significantly reduced in Ia-like units and variably affected in II-like units, while in general the phase was affected little and not changed significantly in either group. The discharge of a smaller percentage of tested units was also modulated by 3-Hz CSN stimulation. Blockade of the neuromuscular junctions by pancuronium did not induce any changes in MSA responses to CSN stimulation, showing that these responses were not secondary to changes in extrafusal or fusimotor activity. Further data showed that the sympathetically induced modulation of MSA discharge was not secondary to the concomitant reduction of muscle blood flow induced by the stimulation. Hence, changes in sympathetic outflow can modulate the afferent signals from muscle spindles through an action exerted directly on the spindles, independent of changes in blood flow. It is suggested that such an action may be one of the mechanisms mediating the onset of chronic muscle pain in these muscles in humans.

  • Ingår i: Neurogastroenterology and Motility. - : Wiley. - 1350-1925 .- 1365-2982. ; 20:6, s. 649-659
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is released after food intake to act as an incretin. GLP-1 also inhibits gastric emptying and increases satiety. In rats, GLP-1 inhibits small bowel motility. Our aim was to study the effects of GLP-1 on gastrointestinal motility in healthy subjects and patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Antro-duodeno-jejunal manometry was carried out during a 4-h control period with saline, followed by a 4-h period with intravenous GLP-1 (healthy: 0.7 and 1.2 pmol kg-1 min-1 (n = 16), IBS, 1.2 and 2.5 pmol kg-1 min-1 (n = 14). Plasma was analysed for GLP-1 and gut hormones, and gut tissue expression of GLP-1 receptor was studied. In healthy subjects, GLP-1 0.7 pmol kg-1 min-1 reduced the migrating motor complexes (MMCs) from a median of 2 (range 2-3) to 0.5 (0-2), and motility index from 4.9 ± 0.1 to 4.3 ± 0.3 ln ∑(mmHg*s min-1) in jejunum, while GLP-1 1.2 pmol kg -1 min-1 diminshed MMCs from 2 (2-3) to 1.5 (1-2.5), and motility index from 5.2 ± 0.2 to 4.4 ± 0.2. In IBS patients, GLP-1 1.2 pmol kg-1 min-1 reduced the MMCs from 2.5 (2-3.5) to 1 (0-1.5) without affecting motility index. At 2.5 pmol kg-1 min -1 GLP-1 decreased MMCs from 2 (1.5-3) to 1 (0.5-1.5), and motility index from 5.2 ± 0.2 to 4.0 ± 0.5. Motility responses to GLP-1 were similar in antrum and duodenum. Presence of the GLP-1 receptor in the gut was verified by reverse transcriptase PCR. In conclusion, the gut peptide GLP-1 decreases motility in the antro-duodeno-jejunal region and inhibits the MMC in healthy subjects and IBS patients. © 2008 The Authors.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives. - : Environmental Health Perspectives. - 0091-6765 .- 1552-9924. ; 116:9, s. 1162-1166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Bone toxicity has been linked to organochlorine exposure following a few notable poisoning incidents, but epidemiologic studies in populations with environmental organochlorine exposure have yielded inconsistent results. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether organochlorine exposure was associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in a population 60-81 years of age (154 males, 167 females) living near the Baltic coast, close to a river contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Methods: We measured forearm BMD in participants using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and we assessed low BMD using age- and sex-standardized Z-scores. We analyzed blood samples for five dioxin-like PCBs, the three most abundant non-dioxin-like PCBs, and p,p'-dichlorophenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE). Results: In males, dioxin-like chlorobiphenyl (CB)-118 was negatively associated with BMD, the odds ratio for low BMD (Z-score less than -1) was 1.06 (95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.12) per 10 pg/mL CB-118. The sum of the three most abundant non-dioxin-like PCBs was positively associated with BMD, but not with a decreased risk of low BMD. In females, CB-118 was positively associated with BMD, but this congener did not influence the risk of low BMD in women. Conclusions: Environmental organochlorine exposures experienced by this population sample since the 1930s in Sweden may have been sufficient to result in sex-specific changes in BMD.

  • Development of IR imaging at IRnova
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Infrared Technology and Applications XXXV. - : SPIE.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historically IRnova has exclusively been a company, focused on manufacturing of QWIP detectors. Nowadays, besides continuous improvements of the performance of QWIP FPAs and development of new formats IRnova is involved in development of QWIP detectors for special applications and has started the development of the next generation infrared detectors, as well. In the light of the development of new formats we validate experimentally theoretical calculations of the response of QWIPs for smaller pixel size. These results allow for the development of high performance megapixel QWIP FPA that exhibit the high uniformity and operability QWIP detectors are known for. QWIP is also being considered for space applications. The requirements on dark current and operating temperature are however much more stringent as compared to the terrestrial applications. We show ways to improve the material quality with as a result a higher detector operating temperature. IRnova is also looking at antimony-based strained superlattice material for the LWIR region together with partners at theIMAGIC centre of excellence. One of the ways to overcome the problem with surface currents is passivating overgrowth. We will report the status and results of overgrowing the detector mesas with AlGa(As)Sb in a MOVPE system. At the same centre of excellence a novel material concept is being developed for LWIR detection. This new material contains a superlattice of vertically aligned and electronically coupled InAs and GaSb quantum dots. Simulations show that it should be possible to have LWIR detection in this material. We will present the current status and report results in this research.

  • Ingår i: Microelectronic Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-9317 .- 1873-5568. ; 86:3, s. 218-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Strained Si is recognised as a necessary technology booster for the nanoelectronics regime. This work shows that high levels of stress attainable from globally strained Si/SiGe platforms can benefit gate leakage and reliability in addition to MOSFET channel mobility. Device self-heating due to the low thermal conductivity of SiGe is shown to be the dominating factor behind compromised performance against short channel strained Si/SiGe MOSFETs. Novel thin virtual substrates aimed at reducing self-heating effects are investigated. In addition to reducing self-heating effects, the thin Virtual substrates provide further improvements to gate oxide integrity, reliability and lifetime compared with conventional thick virtual substrates. This is attributed to tire lower surface roughness of the thin virtual substrates which arises due to the reduced interactions of strain-relieving misfit dislocations during thin Virtual substrate growth. Good agreement between experimental data and physical models is demonstrated, enabling gate leakage mechanisms to be identified. The advantages and challenges of using globally strained Si/SiGe to advance MOS technology are discussed.

  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 254:19, s. 6182-6185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Substrate engineering innovations such as SOI and the use of Si/SiGe virtual substrates become necessary in order to maintain performance leverage of integrated circuits with continued scaling. The relevance of thermal effects in device design increases since the thermal conductivity of these new materials is poor. The electrical performance of devices fabricated on thin virtual substrates grown by two different techniques is presented. It is found that self-heating is reduced and that thermal resistance measurements agree with modelling predictions. The reduction in performance enhancement seen in many strained Si MOSFETs is found here to be largely due to self-heating effects, rather than parasitics or the loss of strain.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first results from the stopped beam RISING experimental campaign performed at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany, are presented. RISING (Rare ISotope Investigations at GSI) constitutes a major new experimental program in European nuclear structure physics research aimed at using relativistic energy (typically around 1 GeV per nucleon) projectile fragmentation reactions to populate nuclei with highly exotic proton-to-neutron ratios compared to the line of beta stability. In its high-efficiency ‘stopped beam’ configuration, the RISING γ-ray spectrometer consists of 105 individual, large volume germanium crystals which view a focal plane in which the exotic nuclei are brought to rest (i.e. ‘stopped’). Here, decays from metastable or ‘isomeric’ states with half-lives in the nano to milliseconds range can be observed, often providing the first spectroscopic information on these exotic nuclear species. This paper introduces the physics aims of the stopped RISING collaboration and presents some technical details on the RISING detector array. Results of initial commissioning experiments are also shown and details of the planned future experimental program are given.

  • Ingår i: Fechner Day 09. - Galway, Irland : International Society for Psychophysics. ; , s. 393-398
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose was to elucidate further Pixton’s (2007, 2008) results. Thirty participants (8 men, 22 women) viewed pictures of facial expressions (Tottenham et al., 2009) with three presentation times (12.50, 18.75, 25.00 ms) and completed a detection (Part 1) and a rating (Part 2) task. In Part 1, participants answered “yes” if they thought the face was emotional and “no” if the face was not emotional. In Part 2, they rated each face stimulus on each of three scales (angriness, happiness, and emotionality). “Neutral” faces were not rated as quite neutral on the different scales. The d′ values were higher for happy than for angry faces. When standardizing the d′ values for each face type through division by its Euclidean distance from the “neutral” face in the scaled emotion space, a male superiority effect appeared for both happy and angry faces. Together with Pixtons’ results, this suggests that when investigating the detectability of emotions, account must be taken of the particular stimuli used.

    • The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a U-238 beam has been measured. For states with angular momentum greater than or similar to 20h, a much higher population than expected has been observed. By introducing a collective component to the generation of angular momentum the experimental data can be understood. This is the first time that a collective degree of freedom has be shown to play a major role in such high-energy collisions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Ingår i: Acta Pædiatrica. - : Wiley. - 1651-2227 .- 0803-5253. ; 96:6, s. 830-836
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Foetal inflammation is associated with an increased risk of brain damage in preterm infants whereas IGF-I is essential for cerebral development and exhibits anti-apoptotic properties. Aim: To assess levels of IGF-I and IGF binding proteins at very preterm birth and to evaluate their relationship with foetal pro-inflammation and cerebral damage. Methods: Levels of IGF-I, IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3), high- (hp) and low-phosphorylated (lp) IGFBP-1 in cord blood and neonatal blood at 72 h after delivery were analysed in relation to levels of cytokines and cerebral damage as detected by ultrasound in 74 inborn infants [mean gestational age (GA) 27.1 weeks]. Evaluation was performed separately according to birth weight for GA. Results: In cord blood of infants appropriate for gestational age (AGA) higher levels of IL-6 and IL-8 were associated with lower IGF-I (r = -0.38, p = 0.008 and r = -0.36, p = 0.014). Higher levels of IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-alpha were associated with both higher levels of lpIGFBP-1 (r = 0.54, p < 0.001, r = 0.50, p < 0.001 and r = 0.13, p = 0.012, respectively) and hpIGFBP-1 (r = 0.55, p < 0.001, r = 0.45, p = 0.002 and r = 0.32, p = 0.026, respectively). Infants with intraventricular haemorrhage grade III (n = 5) had higher levels of lp/hpIGFBP-1 in cord blood (p = 0.001 and 0.002, respectively). Conclusion: Pro-inflammation at birth is associated with changes in the IGF-system. This may be of importance for development of brain damage in preterm infants.
