  • Successful tissue engineering of competent allogeneic venous valves
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vascular Surgery. - : Elsevier Inc.. - 0741-5214. ; 3:4, s. 421-430
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether tissue-engineered human allogeneic vein valves have a normal closure time (competency) and tolerate reflux pressure in vitro. Methods Fifteen human allogeneic femoral vein segments containing valves were harvested from cadavers. Valve closure time and resistance to reflux pressure (100 mm Hg) were assessed in an in vitro model to verify competency of the vein valves. The segments were tissue engineered using the technology of decellularization (DC) and recellularization (RC). The decellularized and recellularized vein segments were characterized biochemically, immunohistochemically, and biomechanically. Results Four of 15 veins with valves were found to be incompetent immediately after harvest. In total, 2 of 4 segments with incompetent valves and 10 of 11 segments with competent valves were further decellularized using detergents and DNAse. DC resulted in significant decrease in host DNA compared with controls. DC scaffolds, however, retained major extracellular matrix proteins and mechanical integrity. RC resulted in successful repopulation of the lumen and valves of the scaffold with endothelial and smooth muscle cells. Valve mechanical parameters were similar to the native tissue even after DC. Eight of 10 veins with competent valves remained competent even after DC and RC, whereas the two incompetent valves remained incompetent even after DC and RC. The valve closure time to reflux pressure of the tissue-engineered veins was <0.5 second. Conclusions Tissue-engineered veins with valves provide a valid template for future preclinical studies and eventual clinical applications. This technique may enable replacement of diseased incompetent or damaged deep veins to treat axial reflux and thus reduce ambulatory venous hypertension. • A comparison of two methods of recovering cobalt from a deep eutectic solvent: Implications for battery recycling
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 167, s. 806-814
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Progress towards a sustainable industrial process for the recycling of unwanted batteries using a deep eutectic solvent is presented. The effect of lactate anions on the recovery of metals from chloride media by extraction by a lipophilic chloride ionic liquid has been investigated with using solvent extraction experiments with a special emphasis on the behaviour of cobalt and nickel. A new solvent extraction system for the recovery of both cobalt and nickel from acidic (lactic acid) media is presented. The relative impacts of the new extraction system and an aliquat system on both workplace air and the wider environment are compared. The new system was found to pose a smallet threat to both workers and the environment.

  • Tapping into Western Technologies by Chinese Multinational Enterprises: Geely purchase of Volvo Cars and Huawei hiring of Ericsson employees in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Innovation spaces in Asia entrepreneurs, multinational enterprises and policy edited by Maureen McKelvey, Sharmistha Bagchi-Sen. - Cheltenham, U.K. : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781783475674 ; , s. 231-255
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on how firms from emerging markets can access, and tap into, relevant external knowledge for innovation in Western countries, and thereby stimulate flows within new innovation spaces across countries.. This chapter focuses on China and Sweden, and more specifically on companies in the automobile and telecommunication industries. Chinese companies are increasingly moving abroad to access both advanced technologies and new markets. The chapter presents two case studies of Chinese firms moving into Sweden, including Geely’s purchase of Volvo Car Corporation in the automotive industry and Huawei’s hiring of Ericsson’s previous employees in the telecommunication industry. The cases represent two mechanisms for accessing scientific and technological resource, namely foreign acquisition and employment of key individuals from competitors through the establishment of R&D labs.

  • Executive search as ethnosociality : A cross-cultural comparison
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cross Cultural Management. - : SAGE Publications. - 1470-5958 .- 1741-2838. ; 16:2, s. 153-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we explore how executive search consultants in Austria, Finland and Sweden address ethnicity. Our findings suggest that while consultants working in these different sociocultural settings may attribute different meanings to ethnicity, they share a tendency to evade questions of ethnicity with regard to the search process. We specify three discursive practices that serve to eliminate questions of ethnicity from executive search: constructing whiteness as self-evident, constructing varieties of whiteness (articulating deficiency and lack for those not belonging to Us), and distancing responsibility for the current situation to clients and society. In view of these findings, we argue that executive search can be understood as an arena for ethnosociality that stops cultural diversity at the door of management suites and serves to undermine efforts to promote cross-cultural understanding in organizations. Our study indicates that sustaining whiteness as a privileged ethnicity takes multiple forms. While executive search consultants play an important role in these processes, it is suggested that they inherit a more fundamental problem in society and they have few opportunities to change the ethnic status quo at the top.

  • Significantly accelerated wound healing of full-thickness skin using a novel composite gel of porcine acellular dermal matrix and human peripheral blood cells
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cell Transplantation. - : Cognizant Communication Corporation. - 0963-6897 .- 1555-3892. ; 26:2, s. 293-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we report the fabrication of a novel composite gel from decellularized gal-gal-knockout porcine skin and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMC) for full-thickness skin wound healing. Decellularized skin extracellular matrix (ECM) powder was prepared via chemical treatment, freeze-drying and homogenization. The powder was mixed with culture medium containing hyaluronic acid to generate a pig skin gel (PSG). The effect of the gel in regeneration of full-thickness wound was studied in nude mice. We found significantly accelerated wound closure already on day 15 in animals treated with PSG only or PSG+hPBMC as compared to untreated and hyaluronic acid treated controls (p<0.05). Addition of the hPBMC to the gel resulted in marked increase of host blood vessels as well as the presence of human blood vessels. At day 25, histologically, the wounds in animals treated with PSG only or PSG+hPBMC were completely closed as compared to controls. Thus, the gel facilitated generation of new skin with well arranged epidermal cells and restored bilayer structure of the epidermis and dermis. These results suggest that porcine skin ECM gel together with human cells may be a novel and promising biomaterial for medical applications especially for patients with acute and chronic skin wounds.

  • Behavior of Cs in Grimsel granodiorite: sorption on main minerals and crushed rock
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Radiochimica Acta. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0033-8230 .- 2193-3405. ; 104:8, s. 575-582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study the sorption of cesium was investigated on four different minerals; quartz, plagioclase, potassium feldspar and biotite as well as granodiorite obtained from the Grimsel test site in Switzerland. The experiments were conducted in the presence of the weakly saline Grimsel groundwater simulant by determining the distribution coefficients using batch sorption experiments and PHREEQC-modelling across a large concentration range. In addition, the purity of the minerals was measured by XRD and the specific surface areas by BET method using krypton. The distribution coefficients of cesium were largest on biotite (0.304 +/- 0.005 m(3)/kg in 10(-8) M). Furthermore, the sorption of cesium on quartz was found to be negligibly small in all investigated concentrations and the sorption of cesium on potassium feldspar and plagioclase showed similar behavior against a concentration isotherm with distribution coefficients of 0.0368 +/- 0.0004 m(3)/kg and 0.18 +/- 0.04 m(3)/kg in 10(-8) M. Finally, cesium sorption behavior on crushed granodiorite followed the trend of one of its most abundant mineral, plagioclase with distribution coefficient values of 0.107 +/- 0.003m(3)/kg in 10-8 M. At low concentrations (< 1.0 . 10(-6) M) cesium was sorbed on the frayed edge sites of biotite and once these sites are fully occupied cesium sorbs additionally to the Type II and Planar sites. As a consequence, the sorption of cesium on biotite is decreased at concentrations > 1.0 . 10(-6) M. Secondly cesium sorption on potassium feldspar and plagioclase showed similar non-linear behavior with varying concentration. The results were used to assist the interpretation of cesium diffusion process in the 2.5 year in-situ experiment carried out in the underground laboratory at Grimsel test site in Switzerland (2007-2009).
