    • This paper presents the first results of the ongoing development of new forest mapping methods for the Swedish national forest mapping case using Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data, utilizing the recent findings in machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. We used Random Forest (RF) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) as ML models. In addition, Neural networks (NN) based approaches were utilized in this study. ALS derived features were used to estimate the stem volume (V), above-ground biomass (AGB), basal area (B), tree height (H), stem diameter (D), and forest stand age (A). XGBoost ML algorithm outperformed RF 1 % to 3 % in the R² metric. NN model performed similar to ML model, however it is superior in the estimation of V, AGB, and B parameters.

    • Despite the close relationship between planetary science and plasma physics, few advanced numerical tools allow bridging the two topics. The code Menura proposes a breakthrough towards the self-consistent modelling of these overlapping fields, in a novel two-step approach allowing for the global simulation of the interaction between a fully turbulent solar wind and various bodies of the solar system. This article introduces the new code and its two-step global algorithm, illustrated by a first example: the interaction between a turbulent solar wind and a comet.

  • Sinonasal outcome test-22 and peak nasal inspiratory flow : valuable tools in obstructive sleep apnoea

    • Background: Sinonasal complaints contribute to low adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment. We aimed to investigate sinonasal health in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients, using the sinonasal outcome test-22 (SNOT-22), and to analyse whether SNOT-22 is affected by CPAP adherence. We also aimed to investigate whether peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) was able to predict adherence to CPAP. Methods:The study population comprised 197 OSA patients (60 females) initiating CPAP treatment The SNOT-22, PNIF and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale were assessed at baseline and follow-up. One-night polygraphy, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, peak expiratory flow and health-related issues were assessed at baseline. At follow-up, the patients were categorised into adherent (>4 hours/night) and non-adherent (<4 hours/night) to CPAP treatment. Results: The average time for following up CPAP treatment was (mean +/- SD) 24.0 +/- 23.9 days and it did not differ significantly between the groups.The SNOT-22 score was elevated among all OSA patients, 36.1 +/- 19.4.There was a larger improvement in the SNOT-22 score at follow-up among adherent CPAP users compared with non-adherent users (-10.4 +/- 13.9 vs. -3.2 +/- 15.4). A PNIF value of < 100 litres/min increased the risk of non-adherence to CPAP with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 2.40 ((95% CI 1.16-5.00)). Conclusions: The SNOT-22 was elevated in patients with OSA, indicating a considerable sinonasal disease burden.The SNOT-22 improved with good CPAP adherence. A low PNIF value was able to predict poor CPAP adherence. Both the SNOT-22 and PNIF can be valuable tools in the evaluation of OSA patients and in the management of CPAP treatment.

    • The choice of tree species used in production forests matters for biodiversity and ecosystem services. In Sweden, damage to young production forests by large browsing herbivores is helping to drive a development where sites traditionally regenerated with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) are instead being regenerated with Norway spruce (Picea abies). We provide a condensed synthesis of the available evidence regarding the likely resultant implications for forest biodiversity and ecosystem services from this change in tree species. Apart from some benefits (e.g. reduced stand-level browsing damage), we identified a range of negative outcomes for biodiversity, production, esthetic and recreational values, as well as increased stand vulnerability to storm, frost, and drought damage, and potentially higher risks of pest and pathogen outbreak. Our results are directly relevant to forest owners and policy-makers seeking information regarding the uncertainties, risks, and trade-offs likely to result from changing the tree species in production forests.

  • ForestMap : The next generation of forest maps – adapting a Nordic success story across the globe

    • Forests provide countless values to people and society, both in developing as in developed countries. For the developed countries, the main value has been from wood and products from wood. In many developing countries, the forest is still seen as a common right of access, supplying firewood, food and building material. Today, new societal values are provided by the forests, important to human well-being. Presumably, the most important value of the forests is that they have been identified to have a major role in global climate change, where defore station, afforestation and new strategies to actively increase carbon sequestration, are very important processes. Moreover, the forests are critical habitats for biodiversity and there is increasing evidence that biodiversity contributes to forest ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services. However, there is very little global discussion on how improved management of productive forests could contribute to mitigation of climate change and enrichment of biodiversity. If forest owners could utilize efficient decision tools for improved management and precision forest management, they would benefit with higher yield and net turnover, which in turn motivates them to further improve the management. Higher net turnover is also a motivating factor to reinvest in additional management and afforestation, hence, creating a positive loop that mitigate climate change by increased carbon sequestration and is beneficial to biodiversity. Extrapolated to the global forest estate of 3.9 billion hectares, these data suggest that about 77% of the world’s forest is owned and administered by governments, about 4% is reserved for communities, about 7% is owned by local communities, and about 12% is owned by individuals. In the above context, a fundamental need from forest stakeholders is data about the forest state and change in terms of biomass, tree species composition, and forest cover. However, depending on the stakeholder, the need of data, required accuracy, willingness to pay and need of decision support is very much variating. When also considering that many stakeholders are illiterate and may not have adequate competence to interpret data into management decisions, there is a clear need for a solution that also can strengthen equality (including gender equality)among stakeholders. The ForestMap project will provide new means for forest mapping globally and provide new open data crucial for sustainable forest management and mitigation of climate change. The overall objective is to advance the societal values of forest use by developing and evaluating a new methodology to produce forest maps across the globe. The project will develop easily applicable methods for forest map production using crowd sourced data from smartphones and remote sensing data from space- and airborne systems. Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms will be developed in order to produce tailor-made forest maps to stakeholder’s needs, corresponding to their willingness to pay. The societal value of the forest maps used in existing and new business models will also be explored.

We examine, by a single case, the downstream impacts of DDK enabled by a digital product innovation for components of inner walls. Potentials of DDK in construction supply chains have been assessed. The study provides insights on performance effects of DDK, requirements for its implementation, and conditions that alter the effects.

  • Retrospective evaluation of ophthalmological and neurological outcomes for infants born before 24 weeks gestational age in a Swedish cohort

    • Objectives To retrospectively evaluate ophthalmological and neurological outcomes in a Swedish cohort of infants born before 24 weeks gestational age (GA) and explore risk factors for visual impairment. Setting Eye and paediatric clinics in Sweden. Participants Infants screened for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (n=399), born before 24 weeks GA, 2007-2018. Cases were excluded if ophthalmological follow-up records could not be traced. Primary and secondary outcome measures Primary outcomes were ophthalmological, including visual acuity (VA), refractive error, strabismus, nystagmus and cerebral visual impairment (CVI). Secondary outcomes comprised neonatal and neurological morbidities. Data were retrospectively retrieved from medical records. Results The 355 assessed children had a median GA of 23 weeks and 2 days and a median birth weight of 565 g. At the last available ophthalmological examination, the median age was 4.8 years (range 0.5-13.2 years). Nystagmus was recorded in 21.1%, strabismus in 34.8%, and 51.0% wore spectacles. Seventy-three of 333 (21.9%) were visually impaired, defined as being referred to a low vision clinic and/or having a VA less than 20/60 at 3.5 years of age or older. ROP treatment was a significant risk factor for visual impairment (OR 2.244, p=0.003). Visually impaired children, compared with children without visual impairment, more often had neurological deficits such as intellectual disability 63.8% versus 33.3% (p<0.001), epilepsy 21.1% versus 7.5% (p=0.001) and autism spectrum disorders 32.8% versus 20.9% (p=0.043). Nine of the 355 children had been diagnosed with CVI. Conclusions Children born before 24 weeks GA frequently had visual impairment in association with neurological deficits. CVI was rarely diagnosed. A multidisciplinary approach for the evaluation and habilitation of these vulnerable infants is warranted. National follow-up guidelines need to be developed and implemented.

  • Economic incentives for preserving biodiverse semi-natural pastures with calves from dairy cows

    • Economical profitability of pasture-based beef production is necessary for continued maintenance of semi-natural pastures. In a situation of decreased cattle stocks, there is a potential to castrate male calves from dairy cows and raise them as grazing steers instead of intact bulls reared indoors, which is the common way in the Nordic countries. We examined the profitability in model enterprises with either grazing steers or indoor bulls. Within the two genders (steer and bull), there were animals of two breed types (pure dairy breed and dairy x beef crossbreed), which were divided into an intensive or extensive production system. The intensive steer system had one summer on grass and slaughter at 21 months of age whereas the extensive steer system had two summers on grass and slaughter at 28 months of age. All bulls were reared indoors and slaughtered at 15 or 18 months of age. The profitability was calculated as contribution margin (CM; sigma revenues - sigma variable costs) in three different herd sizes (50, 100 and 150 slaughtered animals per year) and in three different regions in Sweden (the southern forest districts Gsk, the southern plain districts Gns, and the lower parts of the northern Nn). In the basic calculation, CM for all steers in large herds with 150 slaughtered animals per year was above zero for all cases in Gns, and for one case in Nn and in Gsk respectively. However, all steer cases had lower CM than the comparable bull system in the basic calculation. Sensitivity analyses demonstrate several possible ways of increasing the competitiveness of the grazing steers, compared to the bulls. Utilization of buildings without opportunity cost resulted in a CM above zero for all cases. Increasing the proportion of semi-natural pastures rendering high agrienvironmental payment and support was another effective mean. Decreasing the winter feed cost and labour demand on pasture reduced the costs, whereas producing premium-price certified pasture beef increased the revenue, all measures further contributing to an improved profitability. Pasture-based beef production from dairy-born steers can be economically viable, especially in large herds and with extensive production systems. Thereby, we conclude this system to has a potential to graze large areas of semi-natural pastures and thereby conserve their biodiversity and cultural values.

    • Allergic rhinitis is the most common chronic disease in Sweden, with impact on quality of life and with a heavy economic burden for the society. More than 20 years have passed since national recommendations were launched, and meanwhile both ARIA (Allergic rhinitis and its impact of asthma) and EUFOREA (The European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases) have presented international guidelines which in this article have been adapted to the clinical situation in Sweden. Visual analogue scale (VAS) is recommended for symptom evaluation, and the importance of correct allergen analysis and examination for coexisting asthma is emphasized. Treatment is recommended according to EUFOREA. Follow-up is important, and if VAS is =5 the disease is regarded as uncontrolled and must lead to a change of treatment. Since self-treatment is common in allergic rhinitis the importance of patient cooperation and information is underlined.

    • The solar wind interacts with all solar system bodies, inducing different types of dynamics depending on their atmospheric and magnetic environments. We here outline some key open scientific questions related to this interaction, with a focus on the Moon and Mars, that may be addressed by future Mars and Moon missions by the European Space Agency's Human and Robotic Exploration programme. We describe possible studies of plasma interactions with bodies with and without an atmosphere, using multi-point and remote measurements, and energetic particle observations, as well as recommend some actions to take.

    • Background: Chronic sickness behavior is implicated in ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and chronic pain but the level of subjective sickness behavior in these conditions has not been investigated or compared to other clinical and non-clinical samples, or to the level in experimental inflammation. Furthermore, the relationship between sickness behavior and self-rated health and functioning is not known in patients with ME/CFS and chronic pain. The aim of the present study was to investigate how sickness behavior in patients with chronic conditions differs from that in individuals with experimental acute sickness, primary care patients, the general population and healthy subjects. In addition, we wanted to explore how sickness behavior is related to self-rated health and health-related functioning.Methods: Sickness behavior was quantified using the sickness questionnaire (SicknessQ). Self-ratings were collected at one time-point in 6 different samples. Levels of sickness behavior in patients with ME/CFS (n ​= ​38) and patients with chronic pain (n ​= ​190) were compared to healthy subjects with lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced inflammation (n ​= ​29), primary care patients (n ​= ​163), individuals from the general population (n ​= ​155) and healthy subjects (n ​= ​48), using linear regression. Correlations and moderated regression analyses were used to investigate associations between sickness behavior and self-rated health and health-related functioning in ME/CFS, chronic pain and the general population.Results: LPS-injected individuals (M ​= ​16.3), patients with ME/CFS (M ​= ​16.1), chronic pain (M ​= ​16.1) and primary care patients (M ​= ​10.7) reported significantly higher SicknessQ scores than individuals from the general population (M ​= ​5.4) and healthy subjects (M ​= ​3.6) all p’s ​< ​0.001). In turn, LPS-injected individuals, patients with ME/CFS and chronic pain reported significantly higher SicknessQ scores than primary care patients (p’s ​< ​0.01). Higher levels of sickness behavior were associated with poorer self-rated health and health-related functioning (p’s ​< ​0.01), but less so in patients with ME/CFS and chronic pain than in individuals from the general population.Conclusions: Patients with ME/CFS and chronic pain report similar high levels of sickness behavior; higher than primary care patients, and comparable to levels in experimental inflammation. Further study of sickness behavior in ME/CFS and chronic pain populations is warranted as immune-to-brain interactions and sickness behavior may be of importance for functioning as well as in core pathophysiological processes in subsets of patients.

  • Baseline Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Levels Moderate Psychological Inflexibility in Behavioral Treatment for Chronic Pain

    • Background: The medical and scientific communities struggle to understand chronic pain and find effective treatments. Multimodal approaches are encouraging but show significant individual differences. Methods: Seventy-eight persons (56 women) with chronic pain received Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and provided blood samples before and after treatment. The participants completed surveys with the blood sampling. Blood plasma was analyzed for IL-6 and TNF-α levels with the Olink Inflammation Panel (Olink Bioscience Uppsala, Sweden). The treatment effects and moderating effects of low-grade inflammation on changes in outcomes were analyzed using linear mixed models. Results: Pain interference (p < 0.001) and psychological inflexibility (p < 0.001) improved significantly during treatment, but pain intensity did not (p = 0.078). Cytokine levels did not change over the course of the treatment (IL-6/TNF-α p = 0.086/0.672). Mean baseline levels of IL-6 and TNF-α moderated improvement in psychological inflexibility during the course of treatment (p = 0.044), but cytokine levels did not moderate changes in pain interference (p = 0.205) or pain intensity (p = 0.536). Conclusions: Higher baseline inflammation levels were related to less improvement in psychological inflexibility. Low-grade inflammation may be one factor underlying the variability in behavioral treatment in chronic pain.

  • Inflammatory Blood Signature Related to Common Psychological Comorbidity in Chronic Pain

    • Chronic pain is characterized by high psychological comorbidity, and diagnoses are symptom-based due to a lack of clear pathophysiological factors and valid biomarkers. We investigate if inflammatory blood biomarker signatures are associated with pain intensity and psychological comorbidity in a mixed chronic pain population. Eighty-one patients (72% women) with chronic pain (>6 months) were included. Patient reported outcomes were collected, and blood was analyzed with the Proseek Multiplex Olink Inflammation Panel (Bioscience Uppsala, Uppsala, Sweden), resulting in 77 inflammatory markers included for multivariate data analysis. Three subgroups of chronic pain patients were identified using an unsupervised principal component analysis. No difference between the subgroups was seen in pain intensity, but differences were seen in mental health and inflammatory profiles. Ten inflammatory proteins were significantly associated with anxiety and depression (using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9): STAMBP, SIRT2, AXIN1, CASP-8, ADA, IL-7, CD40, CXCL1, CXCL5, and CD244. No markers were related to pain intensity. Fifteen proteins could differentiate between patients with moderate/high (GAD-7/PHQ-9 > 10) or mild/no (GAD-7/PHQ-9 < 10) psychological comorbidity. This study further contributes to the increasing knowledge of the importance of inflammation in chronic pain conditions and indicates that specific inflammatory proteins may be related to psychological comorbidity.

  • From meteors to space safety : dynamical models and radar measurements of space objects

    • Every day the Earth's atmosphere is bombarded by 10-200 metric tons of dust-sized particles and larger pieces of material from space called meteoroids. Dust and meteoroids come from parent bodies such as comets and asteroids, which are remnants from the formation of the solar system. In addition to natural objects, geospace contains artificial satellites and space debris that needs to be monitored to reduce the risk of collisions. Studies of all these kinds of space objects form a cross-disciplinary research field that stretches from meteors to space safety. The primary goal of this thesis has been to rigorously connect measurements and their uncertainties with high-level analysis and dynamical simulations of distributions.An automated radar data analysis algorithm was developed for meteor head echo measurements. The analysis algorithm is able to produce realistic uncertainties for each individual meteor event, including the meteoroid orbit. Many of the resulting probability distributions are non-Gaussian, which needs to be accounted for. The analysis algorithm was applied to interferometric high-power large-aperture MU radar data in a case study on high altitude meteors. The study found that 74 out of 106,000 meteors appeared higher than 130 km and a few confirmed detections reached up to 150 km altitude.Comet 21P/Giacobini–Zinner is the parent body of the meteoroid stream giving rise to the October Draconid meteor shower. The meteoroid stream was simulated accounting for parent body orbital uncertainties to estimate meteor shower parameters. The simulation was able to model the unexpected mass distribution observed in the 2011 and 2012 October Draconids. It also successfully predicted a meteor outburst in 2018. Further, methods to reduce the computation time of meteoroid stream simulations using importance sampling were derived and implemented on a test model.EISCAT radar measurements were performed to study space debris from the Kosmos-1408 satellite, which had been destroyed and fragmented in orbit on 15 November, 2021. A novel method to estimate the size distribution of debris objects was developed. Data from two EISCAT radars were used to demonstrate a new initial orbit determination technique, yielding good agreement with known catalogue orbits. Finally, the detectability of near-Earth objects (NEOs) with the EISCAT~3D radar currently under construction was simulated. It was predicted that as many as seven temporarily captured NEOs, i.e. minimoons, could be discovered per year depending on the amount of allocated observation time. The predictions also show that hundreds of NEOs could be tracked yearly to improve their orbits.

    • Previous research indicates elevated levels of clinically significant traits and symptoms of autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children with chronic pain, but associations with functioning and depression are yet unclear. The current study examined the relationships of autistic traits and ADHD symptoms with pain interference, depression, and health-related quality of life, as well as the mediating roles of insomnia and psychological inflexibility, in children with chronic pain (n = 146, 8-17 years, 102 girls) presenting at a tertiary pain clinic. Children completed measures of pain intensity, depression, pain interference, health-related quality of life, insomnia, and psychological inflexibility. Parents (n = 146, 111 mothers) completed measures to assess autistic traits and ADHD symptoms in their children. Children with clinically significant autistic traits and ADHD symptoms presented with significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms and pain interference, and significantly lower health-related quality of life, than did the other children. Autistic traits and ADHD symptoms contributed significantly to the prediction of pain interference and depressive symptoms, as well as health-related quality of life. Psychological inflexibility mediated the relationships between ADHD symptoms and autistic traits on the one hand and depression, pain interference, and health-related quality of life on the other, while insomnia mediated the relationships between ADHD symptoms and depression, pain interference, and health-related quality of life. All analyses were adjusted for demographics and pain intensity. Results suggest the utility of screening for neurodevelopmental disorders in children with chronic pain. Furthermore, the findings may indicate insomnia and skills related to psychological flexibility as potential treatment targets in interventions aiming at improving functioning and health-related quality of life in children with chronic pain and co-occurring symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders.

    • Aim To describe survival and neonatal morbidities in infants born before 24 weeks of gestation during a 12-year period. Methods Data were retrieved from national registries and validated in medical files of infants born before 24 weeks of gestation 2007-2018 in Sweden. Temporal changes were evaluated. Results In 2007-2018, 282 live births were recorded at 22 weeks and 460 at 23 weeks of gestation. Survival to discharge from hospital of infants born alive at 22 and 23 weeks increased from 20% to 38% (p = 0.006) and from 45% to 67% (p < 0.001) respectively. Caesarean section increased from 12% to 22% (p = 0.038) for infants born at 22 weeks. Neonatal morbidity rates in infants alive at 40 weeks of postmenstrual age (n = 399) were unchanged except for an increase in necrotising enterocolitis from 0 to 33% (p = 0.017) in infants born at 22 weeks of gestation. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia was more common in boys than girls, 90% versus 82% (p = 0.044). The number of infants surviving to 40 weeks doubled over time. Conclusion Increased survival of infants born before 24 weeks of gestation resulted in increasing numbers of very immature infants with severe neonatal morbidities likely to have a negative impact on long-term outcome.

    • Speech may be affected in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Professional listeners, naïve listeners, and patients may perceive speech differently. The aim of the study was to assess speech among adults treated for unilateral CLP (UCLP) as rated by naïve listeners, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and self-assessment and to evaluate how well these ratings correlate.All patients with complete UCLP treated at the Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden, in 1960–1987 were invited. A total of 73 of 109 patients (67%) participated, with a mean of 35 years since the initiation of treatment. The noncleft control group consisted of 55 volunteers. All participants answered questionnaires for self-rating of speech, and their speech was audio-recorded digitally. Fourteen naïve listeners and four SLPs rated the speech individually from blinded recordings.There were more speech abnormalities among patients compared to controls according to the ratings of naïve listeners and SLPs. In controls and patients, there were positive correlations between the speech ratings by naïve listeners and SLPs r = 0.44 to 0.71, p < 0.001, Spearman). The patients were less satisfied and rated to have more speech abnormalities than controls (p < 0.001).Although adults treated for UCLP considered their speech as fairly good, they were less satisfied than noncleft controls. The agreement between ratings by naïve listeners and SLPs were good, while the agreement between these ratings and self-assessment varied widely. When assessing speech in adults treated for UCLP, differences in perception of speech abnormalities by professionals, laymen, and patients should be considered.

  • Solar cycle variation of ion escape from Mars

    • Using Mars Express data from 2007 until 2020 we show how ion outflow from Mars varied over more than a solar cycle, from one solar minimum to another. The data was divided into intervals with a length of one Martian year, starting from 30 April 2007 and ending 13 July 2020. The net escape rate was about 5×1024s−1 in the first covered minimum, and 2−3×1024s−1 in the most recent minimum. Ion escape peaked at 1×1025s−1 during the intervening solar maximum. The outflow is a clear function of the solar cycle, in agreement with previous studies which found a clear relationship between solar EUV flux and ion escape at Mars. The outflow during solar maximum is 2.5 to 3 times higher than in the surrounding solar minima. The average solar wind dynamic pressure over a Martian year was investigated, but does not vary much with the solar cycle. The escape rate at solar maximum is in good agreement with some recent MAVEN studies, and dominated by low energy ions at most sampled locations. A simple linear fit to the data gives a prediction of the escape rate for the much stronger solar maximum during the Phobos mission in 1989 that is consistent with observations. The fit also implies a non-linear response of ion escape for low solar EUV, with a lower initial escape response for lower solar EUV levels than those of the studied data set.

    • Context: Rosetta followed comet 67P at heliocentric distances from 1.25 to 3.6 au. The solar wind was observed for much of this time, but was significantly deflected and to some extent slowed down by the interaction with the coma.Aims: We use the different changes in the speed of H+ and He2+ when they interact with the coma to estimate the upstream speed of the solar wind. The different changes in the speed are due to the different mass per charge of the particles, while the electric force per charge due to the interaction is the same. A major assumption is that the speeds of H+ and He2+ were the same in the upstream region. This is investigated.Methods: We derived a method for reconstructing the upstream solar wind from H+ and He2+ observations. The method is based on the assumption that the interaction of the comet with the solar wind can be described by an electric potential that is the same for both H+ and He2+. This is compared to estimates from the Tao model and to OMNI and Mars Express data that we propagated to the observation point.Results: The reconstruction agrees well with the Tao model for most of the observations, in particular for the statistical distribution of the solar wind speed. The electrostatic potential relative to the upstream solar wind is derived and shows values from a few dozen volts at large heliocentric distances to about 1 kV during solar events and close to perihelion. The reconstructed values of the solar wind for periods of high electrostatic potential also agree well with propagated observations and model results.Conclusions: The reconstructed upstream solar wind speed during the Rosetta mission agrees well with the Tao model. The Tao model captures some slowing down of high-speed streams as compared to observations at Earth or Mars. At low solar wind speeds, below 400 km s-1, the agreement is better between our reconstruction and Mars observations than with the Tao model. The magnitude of the reconstructed electrostatic potential is a good measure of the slowing-down of the solar wind at the observation point.

    • This thesis deals with the development of the Jovian Neutrals Analyzer (JNA) for the Jupiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission to Jupiter, planned to launch in 2023. Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, orbits the Sun at five times the distance from the Earth to the Sun, accompanied by dozens of moons, rings, and the largest object in the SolarSystem: the Jovian magnetosphere. Born of the interaction betweenthe solar wind and Jupiter’s strong magnetic field, the Jovian magneto-sphere is host to a number of unique, complex phenomena, includingthe creation of a sheet of energetic particles orbiting the giant planetand interacting with its four largest moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.A better understanding of Jupiter’s magnetosphere and its interaction with its four largest moons is one of the main objectives of the JUICE mission. To achieve this goal, JUICE is equipped with the Particle Environment Package (PEP), comprised of six particle sensors, including JNA. By measuring low-energy Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) in the range from 10 eV to 3.3 keV, JNA will image the plasma co-located with the orbit of Io, and reveal ion precipitation patterns at the surface of Jupiter’s icy moons.JNA improves on its predecessors (CENA on Chandrayaan-1 and ENA on BepiColombo) by featuring a higher angular resolution, with a 150◦ field-of-view divided into 11 pixels. JNA is also more resistant to radiation, a necessary improvement to be able to make measurements in the harsh radiation environment expected in the Jovian system. To measure ENAs in the low-energy range, JNA uses a charged particle deflector to remove ambient ions; a charge conversion surface to ionize incoming neutral particles, which are then energy-analyzed by an electrostatic wave system; and a Time-of-Flight cell to derive the mass of the original particle.In this work, we report on how JNA was designed, developed, and calibrated. We show the first results of JNA’s calibration campaign, and compare them to its expected performance. Finally, to facilitate the interpretation of JNA data at Jupiter, we estimate ENA fluxes expected at Ganymede and use our results to simulate JNA observations.

    • Background: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based treatment to improve functioning and quality of life (QoL) for chronic pain patients, but outreach of this treatment is unsatisfactory. Internet-delivery has been shown to increase treatment access but there is limited evidence regarding feasibility and effectiveness of web-based ACT for chronic pain. The aim of the study was to evaluate and iterate a novel internet-delivered ACT program, iACT, in a clinical and a self-referred sample of chronic pain patients. The intervention was developed in close collaboration with patients. To enhance learning, content was organized in short episodes to promote daily engagement in treatment. In both the clinical and self-referred samples, three critical domains were evaluated: (I) feasibility (acceptability, practicality and usage); (II) preliminary efficacy on pain interference, psychological inflexibility, value orientation, QoL, pain intensity, anxiety, insomnia and depressive symptoms; and (III) potential treatment mechanisms.Methods: This was an open pilot study with two samples: 15 patients from a tertiary pain clinic and 24 self-referred chronic pain participants, recruited from October 2015 until January 2017. Data were collected via an online platform in free text and self-report measures, as well as through individual oral feedback. Group differences were analyzed with Chi square-, Mann-Whitney U- or t-test. Preliminary efficacy and treatment mechanism data were collected via self-report and analyzed with multilevel linear modeling for repeated measures.Results: Feasibility: patient feedback guided modifications to refine the intervention and indicated that iACT was acceptable in both samples. User insights provided input for both immediate and future actions to improve feasibility. Comprehensiveness, workability and treatment credibility were adequate in both samples. Psychologists spent on average 13.5 minutes per week per clinical patient, and 8 minutes per self-referred patient (P=0.004). Recruitment rate was 24 times faster in the self-referred sample (24 patients in 1 month, compared to 15 patients in 15 months, P<0.001) and the median distance to the clinic was 40 km in the clinical sample, and 426 km in the self-referred sample (P<0.001). Preliminary effects: post-assessments were completed by 26 participants (67%). Significant effects of time were seen from pre- to post-treatment across all outcome variables. Within group effect sizes (Cohen’s d) at post-treatment ranged from small to large: pain interference (d=0.64, P<0.001), psychological inflexibility (d=1.43, P<0.001), value progress (d=0.72, P<0.001), value obstruction (d=0.42, P<0.001), physical QoL (d=0.41, P=0.005), mental QoL (d=0.67, P=0.005), insomnia (d=0.31, P<0.001), depressive symptoms (d=0.47, P<0.001), pain intensity (d=0.78, P=0.001) and anxiety (d=0.46, P<0.001). Improvements were sustained at 1-year follow-up. Psychological inflexibility and value progress were found to be potential treatment mechanisms.Conclusions: The results from the present study suggests that iACT was feasible in both the clinical and the self-referred sample. Together with the positive preliminary results on all outcomes, the findings from this feasibility study pave the way for a subsequent large randomized efficacy trial.

    • Background The increasing availability of remotely sensed data has recently challenged the traditional way of performing forest inventories, and induced an interest in model-based inference. Like traditional design-based inference, model-based inference allows for regional estimates of totals and means, but in addition for wall-to-wall mapping of forest characteristics. Recently Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-based maps of forest attributes have been developed in many countries and been well received by users due to their accurate spatial representation of forest resources. However, the correspondence between such mapping and model-based inference is seldom appreciated. In this study we applied hierarchical model-based inference to produce aboveground biomass maps as well as maps of the corresponding prediction uncertainties with the same spatial resolution. Further, an estimator of mean biomass at regional level, and its uncertainty, was developed to demonstrate how mapping and regional level assessment can be combined within the framework of model-based inference. Results Through a new version of hierarchical model-based estimation, allowing models to be nonlinear, we accounted for uncertainties in both the individual tree-level biomass models and the models linking plot level biomass predictions with LiDAR metrics. In a 5005 km(2)large study area in south-central Sweden the predicted aboveground biomass at the level of 18 m x18 m map units was found to range between 9 and 447 Mg center dot ha(-1). The corresponding root mean square errors ranged between 10 and 162 Mg center dot ha(-1). For the entire study region, the mean aboveground biomass was 55 Mg center dot ha(-1)and the corresponding relative root mean square error 8%. At this level 75% of the mean square error was due to the uncertainty associated with tree-level models. Conclusions Through the proposed method it is possible to link mapping and estimation within the framework of model-based inference. Uncertainties in both tree-level biomass models and models linking plot level biomass with LiDAR data are accounted for, both for the uncertainty maps and the overall estimates. The development of hierarchical model-based inference to handle nonlinear models was an important prerequisite for the study.

    • A chasm is growing between the advanced technologies available for improving manufacturing operations and those effectively used in practice. The vision of Industry 4.0 is to mobilize industry to seek out these possibilities for improvement and to close the gap between opportunity and reality. However, when compared with more established improvement opportunities such as lean manufacturing, the digitalization of manufacturing lacks in both paradigmatic examples and an understanding of how to achieve the benefits. This lack is a complication of concern: Without an appropriate operations strategy to capture the value of digitalization, manufacturing companies will be unable to focus on technological investments and operational changes. To address this concern, operations management academics must develop new theory through active engagement in the practice of digitalization in manufacturing. This research presents a paradigmatic example, based on engaged scholarship, focused on effectively combining novel object-interactive and conventional manufacturing syntax for benefiting from digitalization in internal operations and the wider supply chain. The contribution to literature is a novel operations strategy—hybrid digital manufacturing—for capturing the value of Industry 4.0 technologies.

The aim was to investigate school nurses’ descriptions of promoting participation for children of foreign origin in health visits.Methods: A content analysis of 673 Swedish school nurses’ answers to eight open-ended questions regarding promotion of participation for children of foreign origin was conducted. The open-ended questions were part of a larger web-based cross-sectional survey distributed to school nurses in Sweden.Results: The results show that school nurses use three main approaches during the health visit: adjusting according to the child’s proficiency in Swedish and/or cultural or national background, adjusting according to the child’s individual needs, and doing the same for all children regardless of their origin. Yet, adjustments according to the child’s proficiency in Swedish and/or cultural or national background were the most common.Conclusions: By combining the approaches of adjusting, a child-centered care that contributes to children’s participation in health visits and equity in health could be provided.

The aim was to investigate school nurses' descriptions of promoting participation for children of foreign origin in health visits.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted, using a web-based questionnaire distributed to all school nurses in Sweden. It contained eight open-ended questions regarding promotion of participation for children of foreign origin. Answers were provided by 673 Swedish school nurses and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.Results:The preliminary result shows that school nurses use three approaches to promote participation: 1) adjusting according to the child's proficiency in Swedish and/or cultural or national background, 2) adjusting according to the child's individual needs, and 3) doing the same for all children regardless of their origin. These approaches are used throughout the health visit, although the most commonly was number 1. Such adjustments included the school nurse considering cultural aspects, simplifying their way of talking, or asking the child about their culture or background.Conclusion:Adjustment according to the child's proficiency in Swedish and/or cultural or national background are warranted to promote participation in health visits with children of foreign origin. These will strengthen the opportunities for children to share their experiences as well as the encounter between school nurses and children.Key messages:School nurses adjust promotion of participation when encountering children of foreign origin.Adjusting promotion of participation in health visits will enable children to share their health needs.

    • The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between school nurses' self-assessed cultural competence in health visits with children of foreign origin and demographic variables, by using a cross-sectional design. A Web-based questionnaire assessing cultural competence and demographic variables was distributed to a nationally representative sample (n = 816) of school nurses in Sweden. Data were analyzed using regression analysis. School nurses assessed themselves as culturally aware and moderately culturally competent, but not as culturally knowledgeable, culturally skilled, or comfortable in cultural encounters. Cultural competence was related to education in cultural diversity, how often nurses encounter children of foreign origin, and nurses' country of origin. In total, these variables explained 23.6% of the variation in school nurses' cultural competence. Because school nurses regard themselves as moderately culturally competent, a foundation for promoting children's health on equal terms in school health care exists. However, education in cultural diversity combined with other additional strategies is needed to further strengthen school nurses' cultural knowledge, skills, and comfort level in encounters with children of foreign origin.

    • The magnetized solar wind drives a current system around Mars that maintains its induced magnetosphere. The solar wind also transfers its energy to the atmospheric ions, causing continuous atmospheric erosion, which has a profound impact on the planet’s evolution history. Here, we use Amitis, a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)-based hybrid plasma model to first reproduce the global pattern of the net electric current and ion currents under an interplanetary magnetic field perpendicular to the solar wind flow direction. The resultant current distribution matches the observations and reveals more details. Using the electric field distribution characterized earlier with the same model, we calculate for the first time the spatial distribution of energy transfer rate to the plasmas in general and to different ion species at Mars. We find out that (1) the solar wind kinetic energy is the dominant energy source that drives Martian induced magnetosphere, (2) the energy flux of the shocked solar wind flows from the magnetic equatorial plane towards the plasma sheet in the induced magnetotail, (3) both the bow shock and the induced magnetospheric boundary are dynamos where plasma energy is transferred to the electromagnetic field, and (4) the planetary ions act as loads and gain energy from the electromagnetic field. The most intense load region is the planetary ion plume. The general pattern of the energy transfer rate revealed in this study is common for induced magnetospheres. Its variabilities with the upstream conditions can provide physical insight into the observed ion escape variabilities.

    • The correlation between space environment conditions and the properties of escaping ions is a central topic of Mars research. Although empirical correlations have been visible in the data, a physics-based interpretation, rather than statistics-based pictures, has not been established yet. As a first effort, we investigate the electric field, the direct contributor to ion acceleration, in the Mars plasma environment from a hybrid plasma model (particle ions and fluid electrons). We use Amitis, a hybrid model combined with an observation-based ionospheric model, to simulate the Mars-solar wind interaction under nominal solar wind plasma conditions for perpendicular and Parker spiral directions of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The simulations show following results: (1) the electric field morphology is structured by the IMF direction and the different plasma domains in the solar wind-Mars interaction; (2) asymmetry of the electric field between the hemispheres where the convective electric field points inward and outward, respectively, due to the mass loading and asymmetric draping of the magnetic field lines; (3) the motional electric field dominates in most regions, especially in the dayside magnetosheath; and (4) the Hall term is an order of magnitude weaker and significant in the magnetotail and plasma boundaries for a perpendicular IMF case. The Hall term is relatively stronger for the Parker spiral case. (5) The ambipolar electric field, in principle, agrees with Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution measurements in the magnetosheath.

    • Using data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, we explore the plasma properties of Martian magnetotail current sheets (CS), to further understand the solar wind interaction with Mars and ion escape. There are some CS exhibit energetic oxygen ions that show narrow beam structures in the energy spectrum, which primarily occurs in the hemisphere where the solar wind electric field (Esw) is directed away from the planet. On average, these CS have a higher escaping flux than that of the CS without energetic oxygen ion beams, suggesting different roles in ion escape. The CS with energetic oxygen ion beams exhibits different proton and electron properties to the CS without energetic oxygen ion beams, indicating their different origins. Our analysis suggests that the CS with energetic oxygen ion beams may result from the interaction between the penetrated solar wind and localized oxygen ion plumes.

    • We refine a recently presented method to estimate ion escape from non-magnetized planets and apply it to Mars. The method combines in-situ observations and a hybrid plasma model (ions as particles, electrons as a fluid). We use measurements from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission and Mars Express (MEX) for one orbit on 2015-03-01. Observed upstream solar wind conditions are used as input to the model. We then vary the total ionospheric ion upflux until the solution fits the observed bow shock location. This solution is a self-consistent approximation of the global Mars-solar wind interaction at this moment, for the given upstream conditions. We can then study global properties, such as the heavy ion escape rate. Here we investigate the effects on escape estimates of assumed ionospheric ion composition, solar wind alpha particle concentration and temperature, solar wind velocity aberration, and solar wind electron temperature. We also study the amount of escape in the ion plume and in the tail of the planet. Here we find that estimates of total heavy ion escape are not very sensitive to the composition of the heavy ions, or the amount and temperature of the solar wind alpha particles. We also find that velocity aberration has a minor influence on escape, but that it is sensitive to the solar wind electron temperature. The plume escape is found to contribute 29 % of the total heavy ion escape, in agreement with observations. Heavier ions have a larger fraction of escape in the plume compared to the tail. We also find that the escape estimates scales inversely with the square root of the atomic mass of the escaping ion specie.

    • When the solar wind reaches the Mars obstacle, mass loading by planetary ions slows down the solar wind and raises the bow shock. The Martian atmosphere is undergoing the a scavenging by the solar wind without the protection of a global magnetic field. Atmospheric escape is an important process for the evolution of the Martian climate. For present Mars, the dominant escape of atmospheric neutrals is through four channels: Jeans escape, photochemical reactions, sputtering and electron impact ionization. Ions above the exobase get accelerated by the solar wind electric field and can escape.We here apply a new method for estimating heavy ion (O+, O+2, and CO+2) escape rates at Mars, which combines a hybrid model and observations. We use observed upstream solar wind parameters as input for a hybrid plasma model, where the total ion upflux at the exobase is a free parameter. We then vary this ion upflux to find the best fit to the observed bow shock location. This method gives us a self-consistent description of the Mars-solar wind interaction, which can be used to study other properties of the solar wind interaction besides escape.

    • We apply a recently proposed method to estimate heavy ion escape from Mars. The method combines in situ observations with a hybrid plasma model, which treats ions as particles and electrons as a fluid. With this method, we investigate how solar upstream conditions, including solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, solar wind dynamic pressure, and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) strength and cone angle, affect the heavy ion loss. The results indicate that the heavy ion escape rate is greater in high EUV conditions. The escape rate increases with increasing solar wind dynamic pressure, and decreases as the IMF strength increases. The ion escape rate is highest when the solar wind is parallel to the IMF and lowest when they are perpendicular. The plume escape rate decreases when the solar wind convective electric field increases.

  • Associations between sickness behavior, but not inflammatory cytokines, and psychiatric comorbidity in chronic pain

    • OBJECTIVES: Approximately one in five adults experiences chronic pain, often in co-occurrence with depression, insomnia, anxiety, and lower self-rated health. Elevated levels of cytokines, e.g. tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 8 (IL-8), and interleukin 10 (IL-10), have been identified in patients with chronic pain. Depression, insufficient sleep, poor self-rated health, and pain intensity have also been associated with inflammatory biomarkers. This study aimed to investigate the interrelationships between inflammatory biomarkers and depression, insomnia, anxiety, self-rated health, sickness behavior, and pain intensity in patients with chronic pain.METHODS: Self-report questionnaires and blood samples analyzed for plasma levels of inflammatory biomarkers were collected from 80 adult patients with chronic pain. Associations between inflammatory biomarkers (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)) and depression, insomnia, anxiety, self-rated health, sickness behavior, and pain intensity, were analyzed using bivariate Spearman rank correlation coefficients and regression analyses.RESULTS: Participants were mainly women (72.5 %), with a mean age of 50.8 years, and a reported mean pain duration of 16.7 years. There were significant correlations between insomnia and CRP (rs =.26, p <.05); sex and ESR (rs =.29, p <.05); age and IL-6 (rs =.29, p <.05) and IL-8 (rs =.30, p <.05); BMI and IL-6 (rs =.50, p <.001), CRP (rs =.63, p <.001) and ESR (rs =.42, p <.001). Ratings of depression were positively and significantly related to ratings of sickness behavior and anxiety (β =.32 and β =.40, respectively), explaining 49 % of the total variance in depression ratings. Insomnia was positively and significantly related to sickness behavior (β =.37) explaining 31 % of the total variance in insomnia ratings. Inflammatory biomarkers, however, did not contribute significantly to the models.CONCLUSIONS: Participants reported high levels of symptoms, yet the associations between these ratings and the inflammatory biomarkers were either absent or weak. Also, despite high levels of self-reported sickness behavior, overall the inflammatory status remained within the normal range. Ratings of sickness behavior contributed more than inflammatory markers in explaining ratings of depression and insomnia. The present results point to the complexity of chronic pain, and the challenges of identifying biomarkers that explain symptomatology.
