- SAOL Plus – a new Swedish electronic dictionary System requirements: Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/Vista In September 2007, a CD version of the Swedish Academy Glossary (SAOL) was released, SAOL Plus, which includes all used inflected forms and an advanced Fuzzy Search option, based on pronunciation. The printed version has loong been considered the (unofficial) norm for spelling, inflection and pronunciation of Swedish. It is not a traditional dictionary with complete definitions, although many lemmas are defined or commented. It contains 125 000 lemmas, which is about twice as many as other Swedish monolingual dictionaries. SAOL Plus has the standard search functions, as well as more advanced search options due to the electronic format, such as article search and truncation search. It contains more inflected forms in number and detail than the printed version, and these are shown in full text and made searchable. Thanks to its built-in tool for Fuzzy Search, SAOL Plus is very useful for people with reading and writing disorders, as well as for those for whom Swedish is a second language. SAOL Plus can be an asset for the public as well as for linguists, teachers etc. SMDB, the Swedish Morphological Database, contains all lemmas from SAOL and their inflected forms, morpho-syntactically tagged. However, the database is constructed from all theoretically possible inflections of the lemmas. Some inflections are not grammatically correct or generally accepted, and therefore it has been necessary to extract the semantically plausible forms. Via a tag program connected to a 200 million word corpus, frequency of occurrence of specific word forms can easily be extracted. One challenge has been to scrutinize one million word forms in order to decide which forms should be presented on the cd. SAOL Plus has a tool called Fuzzy Search, which efficiently handles misspelling. This helps the user get to the target word, even if the user doesn’t know how it is spelled. The module for handling misspelling is based on both pronunciation and transposition of letters. The Fuzzy Search can easily be used as a spell-checker together with Word. To the best of our knowledge, this fuzzy search (and spell-checker) based on pronunciation, has few equivalents in its field.

- Mobile application software – the app format – offers new ways of using dictionaries. However, so far, only very few user studies of dictionary apps have been conducted. In this article, we present and discuss the results of a web survey on the use of the app version of the monolingual Svenska Akademiens ordlista (the Swedish Academy Glossary, 13th edition, 2006), henceforth the SAOL. The results show that the SAOL app is used mostly for checking spelling. A more surprising result, since the SAOL is not a definition dictionary, is that it is also frequently used for checking the meaning of words. For forthcoming versions of the glossary, the users request more definitions. Regarding the app, users wish for improved search functions, such as wildcard (truncated) search and cross references. The current app (of the 13th edition) is free. A majority of the users state that they are willing to pay a small sum for an app version of the 14th edition of the SAOL.

- The Internet media gives access to a large number of actual users in more or less real user situations. One year ago I studied the log files from one of the free electronic learner dictionaries in Lexin online (dictionaries for immigrants); the monolingual Svenska ord. The log file analysis has now been followed up by a web questionnaire about the users of the very same dictionary. This article presents the result of the questionnaire where users were asked, firstly, basic questions of age, gender, native language etc. and, secondly, questions concerning their searches in the dictionary. Also, the article shortly discusses the conditions for future studies of dictionary users and dictionary usage.

- The article presents the results of a log file analysis of the searches in Lexin Svenska ord, a free Swedish monolingual Internet dictionary. It focuses on the non-successful searches, called not-founds. The results show, firstly, that a considerable amount of the not-founds are correct spelled Swedish words, but they are not included in the lemma selection of the dictionary. Users also often search for two (or more) word expressions. Secondly, the dictionary’s programmed response in the case of not-founds gives far too many suggestions for it to be user-friendly; sometimes the user is given as many as forty suggestions on words that he or she could have been searching for. Thirdly, users tend to repeat their searches in order to obtain a successful search, for example they try another spelling. It is shown that log files can be a helpful tool in lexicographers work improving electronic as well as paperback dictionaries.

- Våren 2009 utkommer Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien (före detta Nationalencyklopedins ordbok, NEO, 1995–1996). Ett av de områden som genomgått en stor och välbehövlig revidering är idiomen (inkl. andra fastare ordförbindelser) (jfr Sköldberg 2006). Urvalet av idiom har setts över och deras placering har strukturerats om. Dessutom har huvudparten av idiomen försetts med språkprov. Dessa har excerperats från olika textkorpusar såsom redaktionens egna konkordanser, allmänt tillgängliga pressmaterial och via sökningar på Google. Språkprov har som funktion att bidra med information om semantiska, syntagmatiska, konnotationella och encyklopediska egenskaper hos ord (Malmgren 1994:109). Detsamma torde gälla för idiom. I föredraget diskuteras arbetet med excerperingen av exempel till idiomen i Svensk ordbok, de principer vi har arbetet efter och de problem som uppstått under arbetets gång. Det har t.ex. varit svårt att finna bra språkprov till idiom som har få belägg (jfr Kjellmer 1996) eller som tillhör fackspråklig terminologi. I de flesta fall har korpusexemplen redigerats och vi har tagit hänsyn till faktorer såsom längd, sanningshalt, förekomst av egennamn m.m. (jfr Lorentzen 2001:205). Längre språkprov är dock svåra att undvika i de fall idiomen är långa i sig eller då innebörden av dem inte framgår utan en klargörande kontext. Uppgiften har varit att utifrån dessa förutsättningar få de redigerade korpusexemplen att behålla sin naturlighet och autentiska karaktär.

- In the late 70s, the Swedish Board of Education initiated a project (the Lexin project) aiming at production of dictionaries between Swedish and many immigrant languages. A monolingual Swedish dictionary was compiled, serving as the common base of the bilingual dictionaries. In the 90s, the project was exported to other Nordic countries. Since the Nordic languages are closely related, much of the work carried out in Sweden could be reused in Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. Today, there are many learners’ dictionaries between Nordic languages and ‘exotic’ immigrant languages, especially with Swedish and Norwegian as source languages. In this paper, we account for some aspects of this – in some respects probably unique – project. At the end, we give a description of the revision and updating of the Swedish database that has been going on since 2008

- The Swedish Lexin Dictionary, SLD, is an online Swedish monolingual learner’s dictionary for immigrants at beginner’s level (http://lexin.nada.kth.se/lexin/). The dictionary has a well-defined target group and an explicit purpose. Thus the intended use is very clear. Also worth noting is that the dictionary is frequently used. For these reasons, it is most interesting to examine the actual use of this dictionary. The SLD has recently been revised and the online search functions have been improved. The initial part of the paper briefly describes the SLD and the updating project. The main part of the paper reports on an ongoing study of the use and users of the SLD. The study has combined two methods: web questionnaire survey and log file analysis. Thanks to the linking between the questionnaire data and the log file data, issues concerning, for example, whether users really do what they say they do can be verified with greater certainty. The paper demonstrates an example of analysis, where the questionnaire answers of one user are compared with the same user´s actual searches in the SLD. This analysis is but one example of many hundred possible analyses. Apart from the results of the user study, it will also be of great interest to evaluate the procedure of combining two methods within the same study in this way, as the combination has a chance to yield more reliable and valid results on dictionary users and user behaviour.

- Antalet studier i ordboksanvändning har ökat de senaste decennierna. Detta är en följd av det ökade intresset inom både teoretisk och praktisk lexikografi för hur användare faktiskt använder ordböcker och hur man på bästa sätt anpassar ordböcker efter deras behov. En annan avgörande omständighet i sammanhanget är den tekniska utvecklingen och framtagningen av elektroniska ordböcker som har öppnat upp nya möjligheter att undersöka autentisk ordboksanvändning. I denna avhandling redogör Ann-Kristin Hult för en undersökning av användningen av internetordboken Lexins svenska lexikon, LSL. LSL är en enspråkig inlärningsordbok för relativt avancerade nybörjare. LSL genomgick en omfattande revidering 2008–2011 och studien baseras på material från både före och efter revideringen. Användningen av LSL undersöks utifrån tre perspektiv: 1) kvantitativ analys av uppslagningar på ordbokens webbsida, 2) kvantitativ/kvalitativ enkätstudie om användarna och deras användning av LSL och 3) kvalitativa näranalyser av några enskilda informanter och deras aktiviteter på webbsidan. Genom en kombination av metoder kan en mer komplett och nyanserad bild av faktisk ordboksanvändning uppnås. Denna undersökning är ett exempel på hur en sådan kombinatorisk undersökning kan genomföras. De olika metoderna genererar resultat som kompletterar varandra och detta har gett en mer rättvisande beskrivning av användningen av LSL.

- This paper deals with comment field data from two web questionnaire surveys, performed in 2007 and 2011, about the use and users of the Swedish Lexin Dictionary (SLD), an online monolingual learner’s dictionary. The SLD underwent comprehensive revision in between the two studies. In order to evaluate the update I compare the respondents’ comments on SLD before and after the revision. The two sets of comment field data are categorised by the types of comments expressed and by the information categories mentioned. As it turns out, respondents do seem happier with the new version of SLD. Generally, there are more positive comments after the revision than before and the information categories mentioned are more often set in positive contexts in the latter data. In addition, the majority of respondents in 2011 belong to the dictionary’s target group, which was not the case in 2007. Although respondents seem more satisfied with the new version of SLD, the two sets of comment field data contain largely the same kind of criticism, as for example in comments concerning (usually the lack of) lemmas and examples.

- Framtidens Lexin – forskningsöversikt sammanställer forskningsrön inom lexikografi och flerspråkighet med inriktning mot inlärningsordböcker. Utifrån forskningsöversikten ges rekommendationer om hur en framtida lexikografisk resurs bör utformas för den som är nybörjare och lär sig svenska som ett andraspråk. Rapporten är skriven på uppdrag av Språkrådet, Institutet för språk och folkminnen (Isof), och ingår i en större rapport, Framtidens Lexin – målgruppsanpassning och utveckling av framtidens flerspråkiga lexikon. Syftet med denna forskningsöversikt är att undersöka hur väl anpassade för sin målgrupp Lexin (lexikon för invandrare) är i dag, nästan fyrtio år efter att det första lexikonet i serien gavs ut, och att ge rekommendationer om hur Lexin bör utvecklas i framtiden.

- The present study revisits writing retreat participants who have spontaneously formed writing groups before or after attending a retreat hosted by the Unit for Academic Language at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. All in all, 11 doctoral students and one postdoc were interviewed using a semi-structured interview model. The answers were thematically analysed based on Murray’s (2014) concept of coherence in writing groups as well as parts of Aitchison and Lee’s (2006) key characteristics of writing groups. The two main research questions posed concern (i) whether the informants have changed their writing practice and/or the way they think and feel about writing since joining a writing group, and (ii) whether possible changes have aided the development of their identity as academic writers. Results show that the informants have indeed changed central aspects of their writing practice and that this in turn has positively influenced how they now think and feel about writing. This has to some extent contributed to the informants’ development of their writer identity; however, the present study also sheds light on the fact that more needs to be done at departmental levels across the university to make academic writing visible.
