  • Towards a translingual conceptualization of language policy for EMI universities
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Annual Conference of American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL).
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is conducted against the background that universities around the world have been increasingly presented themselves to be international through according to space for English in their language policies (Doiz, Lasagabaster, & Sierra, 2012), and a widespread belief has been generated that internationalization of higher education means internationalization in English (e.g., Hadley, 2014; Phillipson, 2006). Our article, based on the multilingual/translingual realities, provides a critical review of the role that English has been playing in modern internationalized universities, especially the EMI universities, and accordingly, proposes an expanded view of lingua franca in EMI university contexts in terms of translingualism (Canagarajah, 2018; Li, 2018) to better situate English together with other co-existing resources for people to communicate. To illustrate how translingual practice functions as a lingua franca for international communication among multilingual students with different linguistic backgrounds, we draw upon the ethnographical data (participant observation, field notes, interviews, language portraits, policy documents, texts and photos) collected during a period of 20 months at an EMI transnational university in China. Employing nexus analysis (Hult, 2015) in concert with a multimodal biographic discourse analysis (Busch, 2012), we present the complex and multidimensional nature of lingua franca communication, drawing attention to its connection with and influence on individuals’ repertoire development, real-life communication conventions and university language policy. The findings of our study contribute to a discussion of EMI university language and internationalization policy making that focuses on providing institutional recognition and support for cultivating the existing linguistic resources among the student body and creating space for multilingual students to draw upon the full range of semiotic and spatial resources to achieve successful lingua franca communication and to develop personal repertoires.

  • ABO Genotyping finds more A2 to B kidney transplant opportunities than lectin-based subtyping
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Transplantation. - : Elsevier BV. - 1600-6135. ; 23:4, s. 512-519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABO compatibility is important for kidney transplantation, with longer waitlist times for blood group B kidney transplant candidates. However, kidneys from non-A1 (eg, A2) subtype donors, which express less A antigen, can be safely transplanted into group B recipients. ABO subtyping is routinely performed using anti-A1 lectin, but DNA-based genotyping is also possible. Here, we compare lectin and genotyping testing. Lectin and genotype subtyping was performed on 554 group A deceased donor samples at 2 transplant laboratories. The findings were supported by 2 additional data sets of 210 group A living kidney donors and 124 samples with unclear lectin testing sent to a reference laboratory. In deceased donors, genotyping found 65% more A2 donors than lectin testing, most with weak lectin reactivity, a finding supported in living donors and samples sent for reference testing. DNA sequencing and flow cytometry showed that the discordances were because of several factors, including transfusion, small variability in A antigen levels, and rare ABO∗A2.06 and ABO∗A2.16 sequences. Although lectin testing is the current standard for transplantation subtyping, genotyping is accurate and could increase A2 kidney transplant opportunities for group B candidates, a difference that should reduce group B wait times and improve transplant equity.

  • An experimental and theoretical characterization of the electronic structure of doubly ionised disulfur
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using time-of-flight multiple electron and ion coincidence techniques in combination with a helium gas discharge lamp and synchrotron radiation, the double ionisation spectrum of disulfur (S-2) and the subsequent fragmentation dynamics of its dication are investigated. The S-2 sample was produced by heating mercury sulfide (HgS), whose vapour at a suitably chosen temperature consists primarily of two constituents: S-2 and atomic Hg. A multi-particle-coincidence technique is thus particularly useful for retrieving spectra of S-2 from ionisation of the mixed vapour. The results obtained are compared with detailed calculations of the electronic structure and potential energy curves of S-2(2+) which are also presented. These computations are carried out using configuration interaction methodology. The experimental results are interpreted with and strongly supported by the computational results.

  • Egenmonitorering : evidenskartläggning genom sammanställning av systematiska översikter för utvalda diagnosgrupper
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • BackgroundIn Region Västra Götaland (VGR), the development of remote patient monitoring is given high priority, aiming for improvements for patients and reduction of healthcare costs. In this report we defined remote patient monitoring as continuous follow-up of relevant health-related parameters of patients located outside healthcare facilities (e.g. at home). Measurements taken by analogue or digital devices, objective and/or subjective assessments, are delivered digitally to the patient and to a healthcare professional. The healthcare professional provides the patient with feedback on the reported data (feedback may be automatically generated if data are within a predefined range). The plan in VGR is to introduce remote monitoring in selected diagnosis groups – some of which already started using remote monitoring.AimThe aim of this report was to provide an overview of systematic reviews regarding remote monitoring(as add on or replacement of visits in current standard of care) compared to standard of care in 25 selected diagnosis groups.MethodIn order to clarify how remote monitoring is intended to be used in the 25 diagnosis groups, representatives from the respective clinical areas were interviewed. As the scope of this project covered many diagnosis groups, the search was limited to systematic reviews (SRs) of randomised (RCTs) or non-randomised clinical trials. The relevance of each identified SR for our PICO(Population, Intervention, Comparator and Outcomes) was assessed by at least two project members (one clinical representative and one from HTA-centrum). Relevant SRs were assessed by at least two project members using SNABBSTAR, a tool developed by The Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU) for assessment of risk of bias/systematic errors in SRs. The tool consists of six steps and assessment of an SR is stopped as soon as the criteria for a specific level are not met.The steps are: 1. Definition of PICO and literature search; 2. Inclusion/exclusion according to PICO, listing of included studies; 3. Risk of bias assessments; 4. Evidence synthesis/meta-analyses; 5. Certainty of evidence consideration; 6. Documentation of excluded studies, conflicts of interest, and an a priori published SR protocol.SNABBSTAR evaluates how useful an SR is by assessing the methodology used in the SR. In the current project, SRs reaching at least SNABBSTAR level 4 were considered to provide relevant data synthesis. As reaching SNABBSTAR level 5 or 6 is considered necessary for reliable conclusions, we cited key conclusions only from SRs reaching these levels. We did not extract any data from the included SRs.ResultsThe literature search resulted in 3,332 hits. Of these, 279 were read in full text to assess their relevance for the PICO. Seventy-five SRs were considered relevant and were included; these were assessed by SNABBSTAR.

  • Party Education as Mobilisation : Framing education in Swedish and Spanish political parties of the left
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation aims to contribute knowledge of how five movement-related left parties in Sweden and Spain formulate education for their members. By analysing (i) the Swedish Social Democratic Workers’ Party, (ii) the Swedish Left Party, (iii) the Spanish Social Democratic Workers’ Party, (iv) the Spanish United Left and (v) the Spanish Podemos, the study interprets how organised educational activities are formulated and motivated with the aim to instigate member engagement. The analysis builds on interviews with leading party representatives and study leaders, study and course materials, and other official documents, which steer how the parties organise their education. With a framing perspective as a theoretical itinerary, the study emphasises parties' education as a setting where meaning is formulated to initiate collective action.   The four included papers stress and discuss how educational material is formulated and how the parties perceive and motivate organised party education. Papers 1 and 2 analyse text materials and shows how educational materials establish narratives that invites the members to become active in the parties. Even though the educational narrative is welcoming, the study materials also reinforce frames of how to be schooled into becoming an ideal party member. Papers 3 and 4 study interview materials and suggest that member education is interpreted as something that strengthens parties’ movement relations, provides useful training, opens up a space for political reflection, and constructs a feeling of community within the parties.   The dissertation emphasises that these five movement-related left parties perceive their educational activities as settings that create relations between the party and its members. Applying the framing perspective to the understudied educational practices that transpire in parties contributes to deepening the theoretical understanding of how education can be formulated in relation to its bearing on creating collective identities.

  • PCM4EU and PRIME-ROSE : Collaboration for implementation of precision cancer medicine in Europe
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - 1651-226X .- 1651-226X. ; 63, s. 385-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: In the two European Union (EU)-funded projects, PCM4EU (Personalized Cancer Medicine for all EU citizens) and PRIME-ROSE (Precision Cancer Medicine Repurposing System Using Pragmatic Clinical Trials), we aim to facilitate implementation of precision cancer medicine (PCM) in Europe by leveraging the experience from ongoing national initiatives that have already been particularly successful. PATIENTS AND METHODS: PCM4EU and PRIME-ROSE gather 17 and 24 partners, respectively, from 19 European countries. The projects are based on a network of Drug Rediscovery Protocol (DRUP)-like clinical trials that are currently ongoing or soon to start in 11 different countries, and with more trials expected to be established soon. The main aims of both the projects are to improve implementation pathways from molecular diagnostics to treatment, and reimbursement of diagnostics and tumour-tailored therapies to provide examples of best practices for PCM in Europe. RESULTS: PCM4EU and PRIME-ROSE were launched in January and July 2023, respectively. Educational materials, including a podcast series, are already available from the PCM4EU website (http://www.pcm4eu.eu). The first reports, including an overview of requirements for the reimbursement systems in participating countries and a guide on patient involvement, are expected to be published in 2024. CONCLUSION: European collaboration can facilitate the implementation of PCM and thereby provide affordable and equitable access to precision diagnostics and matched therapies for more patients. ble from the PCM4EU website (http://www.pcm4eu.eu). • Double and Triple Ionisation of Isocyanic Acid
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Double and triple ionisation spectra of the reactive molecule isocyanic acid (HNCO) have been measured using multi-electron and ion coincidence techniques combined with synchrotron radiation and compared with high-level theoretical calculations. Vertical double ionisation at an energy of 32.8±0.3eV forms the 3A” ground state in which the HNCO2+ ion is long lived. The vertical triple ionisation energy is determined as 65±1eV. The core-valence double ionisation spectra resemble the valence photoelectron spectrum in form, and their main features can be understood on the basis of a simple and rather widely applicable Coulomb model based on the characteristics of the molecular orbitals from which electrons are removed. Characteristics of the most important dissociation channels are examined and discussed.

  • The theoretical evolution and use of the Uppsala Model of internationalization in the international business ecosystem
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Business Studies. - : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN LTD. - 0047-2506 .- 1478-6990. ; 51:1, s. 38-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Uppsala Model - typically viewed as an internationalization process model, an internationalization stages model, or a sequential internationalization model - has served as a theoretical underpinning in the international business literature since Johanson and Vahlne's (J Int Bus Stud 8(1):23-32, 1977) article incorporated thoughts by researchers at Uppsala University in one all-encompassing model. Major updates to the model were published in 2009 and 2017 by the original authors. Our work examines what has now become the time-tested and Decade Award-winning 2009 version of the Uppsala Model relative to the original model in 1977. We also provide an outlook for international business research within the scope of the 2017 version of the model. This evaluation and dive across times into the nuances of the Uppsala Model capture aspects of the model's theoretical and empirical power, as well as its limitations within today's international business ecosystem. (The international business ecosystem is defined as the organisms of the business world - including stakeholders, organizations, and countries - involved in exchanges, production, business functions, and cross-border trade through both marketplace competition and cooperation.) In the process, we push the theoretical boundaries of the model and provide a unique connection to marketing thought.

  • Constructing the hospitality superstar in restaurant dining rooms
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - Oslo : Taylor & Francis. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 23:2-3, s. 264-281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The need for competent hospitality workers is significant for the sustainable development of the restaurant industry. However, with the recurring challenges of recruiting and retaining a competent workforce, there is a need to understand how employers portray and communicate hospitality work in the recruitment process. Therefore, this study examines how employers construct the image of the hospitality worker, by analyzing what job advertisements signal and communicate to the applicants. Through thematic analysis of 100 job advertisements in Sweden, we found that the ideal hospitality worker is an individualized team player with occupational passion. This means that social capacities and commitment to hospitality and gastronomy, factors that are difficult to measure, are of relevance to gaining employment. Additionally, by asking for social capacities, the distance between work and leisure is diminished and the employee is constructed as a commodity for the purpose of improving service. In contrast to the common image that hospitality work is work that anyone could do, we conclude that the qualifications for becoming a hospitality worker in the restaurant industry are fairly complex.

  • Formation and relaxation of K-2 and K-2V double-core-hole states in n-butane
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 157:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a magnetic bottle multi-electron time-of-flight spectrometer in combination with synchrotron radiation, double-core-hole pre-edge and continuum states involving the K-shell of the carbon atoms in n-butane ( n-C4H10) have been identified, where the ejected core electron(s) and the emitted Auger electrons from the decay of such states have been detected in coincidence. An assignment of the main observed spectral features is based on the results of multi-configurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) calculations for the excitation energies and static exchange (STEX) calculations for energies and intensities. MCSCF results have been analyzed in terms of static and dynamic electron relaxation as well as electron correlation contributions to double-core-hole state ionization potentials. The analysis of applicability of the STEX method, which implements the one-particle picture toward the complete basis set limit, is motivated by the fact that it scales well toward large species. We find that combining the MCSCF and STEX techniques is a viable approach to analyze double-core-hole spectra.

  • Monolingual - Bilingual - Multilingual Tensions in Higher Education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: AILA 2021 - World Congress in Applied Linguistics. - : University of Groningen.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Nordic countries, university language policy and planning centers on balancing the use of the national languages(s) vis-à-vis English (Hultgren, Gregersen & Thøgersen, 2017), whereas less attention has been paid to the roles played by other languages. The present study focuses on how space was negotiated for different languages in real time by a university language-policy committee while crafting a draft policy. Using an ethnographic discourse analytical approach (Barakos & Unger, 2016; Hornberger & Johnson, 2007), interactional and textual data were collected over 10 months during committee negotiations. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis (Saldaña, 2015; Zhang & Wildemuth, 2009) in applying Ruiz’s (1984) orientations to language: language-as-problem, language-as-right and language-as-resource, and Blommaert’s (2007) concept of ‘scale’. Analysis revealed that English, Swedish and other languages were variously positioned as problem or resource: English as problem in undergraduate teaching and in performing certain University ceremonies, and as resource in communicating research and in communication with international students, staff and external reviewers. Swedish was framed as problem in the domains of research communication and in communication with international staff, students and reviewers, but as resource on the institutional scale. Other languages, notably 'Scandinavian', were positioned as resources in restricted areas of University operations. Individual multilingualism was framed as resource, whereas institutional multilingualism was positioned as problem. Parallel-language use (Swedish and English) was framed as being the only solution to the tension between the Swedish Language Act’s requirement of Swedish in legally binding documents and the requirement of English in the University’s international operations. In sum, this presentation illustrates tensions between a Swedish University’s need for monolingualism, parallel-language use and multilingualism on the individual and institutional scales, as well as languages named and identified as problems and resources on the institutional, research-discipline and individual scales.

  • Multilingualism as problem or resource? : Negotiating space for languages other than Swedish and English in university language planning
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ASLA-symposiet 2020 : Abstraktsamling. - : Association suédoise de linguistique appliquée. ; , s. 64-64
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Nordic countries, university language policy and planning (LPP) centers on balancing the use of the national language(s) vis-à-vis English (Gregersen, 2014), conceptualized as parallel-language use (Josephson, 2005; Bolton & Kuteeva, 2012). The strong presence of English leads to tension between language dominance and language diversity (Liyanage, 2018), and LPP research has paid less attention to diversity/multilingualism than to parallel-language use in the Nordic context. In the present study, we address this research gap by focusing on how space was negotiated in real time for languages other than Swedish and English during language-policy negotiations by a committee while they were drafting a language-policy document at a Swedish university. Using an ethnographic discourse analytic approach (Barakos & Unger, 2016; Hult, 2015) and applying Ruiz’s (1984) orientations to language framework, we analyse transcribed audio-recorded language-policy committee meetings, textual data used in the meetings and ethnographic notes taken during meetings. Analysis reveals what languages were brought in to the negotiations to play a role in the University’s language practices, and by whose agency they were brought in. The analysis further reveals that different languages were variously positioned as problem or resource, and that the problem and resource orientations were co-present in the policy negotiations.

  • Calibrated Surrogate Maximization of Dice
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention – MICCAI 2020. - Cham : Springer Nature. ; , s. 269-278
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the medical imaging community, it is increasingly popular to train machine learning models for segmentation problems with objectives based on the soft-Dice surrogate. While experimental studies have showed good performance with respect to Dice, there have also been reports of some issues related to stability. In parallel with these developments, direct optimization of evaluation metrics has also been studied in the context of binary classification. Recently, in this setting, a quasi-concave, lower-bounded and calibrated surrogate for the F1-score has been proposed. In this work, we show how to use this surrogate in the context of segmentation. We then show that it has some better theoretical properties than soft-Dice. Finally, we experimentally compare the new surrogate with soft-Dice on a 3D-segmentation problem and get results indicating that stability is improved. We conclude that the new surrogate, for theoretical and experimental reasons, can be considered a promising alternative to the soft-Dice surrogate.

  • Mg-doping and free-hole properties of hot-wall MOCVD GaN
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 131:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hot-wall metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), previously shown to enable superior III-nitride material quality and high performance devices, has been explored for Mg doping of GaN. We have investigated the Mg incorporation in a wide doping range (2.45 × 10 18 cm-3 up to 1.10 × 10 20 cm-3) and demonstrate GaN:Mg with low background impurity concentrations under optimized growth conditions. Dopant and impurity levels are discussed in view of Ga supersaturation, which provides a unified concept to explain the complexity of growth conditions impact on Mg acceptor incorporation and compensation. The results are analyzed in relation to the extended defects, revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and surface morphology, and in correlation with the electrical properties obtained by Hall effect and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements. This allows to establish a comprehensive picture of GaN:Mg growth by hot-wall MOCVD providing guidance for growth parameters optimization depending on the targeted application. We show that substantially lower H concentration as compared to Mg acceptors can be achieved in GaN:Mg without any in situ or post-growth annealing resulting in p-type conductivity in as-grown material. State-of-the-art p-GaN layers with a low resistivity and a high free-hole density (0.77 ω cm and 8.4 × 10 17 cm - 3, respectively) are obtained after post-growth annealing demonstrating the viability of hot-wall MOCVD for growth of power electronic device structures.
