  • Multi-wavelength observations of the flaring gamma-ray blazar 3C 66A in 2008 October
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 726:1, s. 43-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The BL Lacertae object 3C 66A was detected in a flaring state by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and VERITAS in 2008 October. In addition to these gamma-ray observations, F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, PAIRITEL, MDM, ATOM, Swift, and Chandra provided radio to X-ray coverage. The available light curves show variability and, in particular, correlated flares are observed in the optical and Fermi-LAT gamma-ray band. The resulting spectral energy distribution can be well fitted using standard leptonic models with and without an external radiation field for inverse Compton scattering. It is found, however, that only the model with an external radiation field can accommodate the intra-night variability observed at optical wavelengths.

  • THE DISCOVERY OF gamma-RAY EMISSION FROM THE BLAZAR RGB J0710+591
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL LETTERS. - 2041-8205. ; 715:1, s. L49-L55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object RGB J0710+591 was observed in the very high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) wave band by the VERITAS array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The observations, taken between 2008 December and 2009 March and totaling 22.1 hr, yield the discovery of VHE gamma rays from the source. RGB J0710+591 is detected at a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations (5.5 sigma) above the background, corresponding to an integral flux of (3.9 +/- 0.8) x 10(-12) cm(-2) s(-1) (3% of the Crab Nebula's flux) above 300 GeV. The observed spectrum can be fit by a power law from 0.31 to 4.6 TeV with a photon spectral index of 2.69 +/- 0.26(stat) +/- 0.20(sys). These data are complemented by contemporaneous multiwavelength data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope, the Swift X-ray Telescope, the Swift Ultra-Violet and Optical Telescope, and the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT observatory. Modeling the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) with an equilibrium synchrotron self-Compton model yields a good statistical fit to the data. The addition of an external-Compton component to the model does not improve the fit nor brings the system closer to equipartition. The combined Fermi and VERITAS data constrain the properties of the high-energy emission component of the source over 4 orders of magnitude and give measurements of the rising and falling sections of the SED.

  • Detection of Pulsed Gamma Rays Above 100 GeV from the Crab Pulsar
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 334:6052, s. 69-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the detection of pulsed gamma rays from the Crab pulsar at energies above 100 giga–electron volts (GeV) with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The detection cannot be explained on the basis of current pulsar models. The photon spectrum of pulsed emission between 100 mega–electron volts and 400 GeV is described by a broken power law that is statistically preferred over a power law with an exponential cutoff. It is unlikely that the observation can be explained by invoking curvature radiation as the origin of the observed gamma rays above 100 GeV. Our findings require that these gamma rays be produced more than 10 stellar radii from the neutron star.

  • Detection of hydrogen fluoride absorption in diffuse molecular clouds with Herschel/HIFI: an ubiquitous tracer of molecular gas
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 521:1, s. Article Number: L12-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the detection of absorption by interstellar hydrogen fluoride (HF) along the sight line to the submillimeter continuum sources W49N and W51. We have used Herschel's HIFI instrument in dual beam switch mode to observe the 1232.4762 GHz J = 1-0 HF transition in the upper sideband of the band 5a receiver. We detected foreground absorption by HF toward both sources over a wide range of velocities. Optically thin absorption components were detected on both sight lines, allowing us to measure - as opposed to obtain a lower limit on - the column density of HF for the first time. As in previous observations of HF toward the source G10.6-0.4, the derived HF column density is typically comparable to that of water vapor, even though the elemental abundance of oxygen is greater than that of fluorine by four orders of magnitude. We used the rather uncertain N(CH) - N(H-2) relationship derived previously toward diffuse molecular clouds to infer the molecular hydrogen column density in the clouds exhibiting HF absorption. Within the uncertainties, we find that the abundance of HF with respect to H-2 is consistent with the theoretical prediction that HF is the main reservoir of gas-phase fluorine for these clouds. Thus, hydrogen fluoride has the potential to become an excellent tracer of molecular hydrogen, and provides a sensitive probe of clouds of small H-2 column density. Indeed, the observations of hydrogen fluoride reported here reveal the presence of a low column density diffuse molecular cloud along the W51 sight line, at an LSR velocity of similar to 24 km s(-1), that had not been identified in molecular absorption line studies prior to the launch of Herschel.

  • VERITAS Observations of Day-scale Flaring of M 87 in 2010 April
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 746:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • VERITAS has been monitoring the very-high-energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) gamma-ray activity of the radio galaxy M 87 since 2007. During 2008, flaring activity on a timescale of a few days was observed with a peak flux of (0.70 ± 0.16) × 10–11 cm–2 s–1 at energies above 350 GeV. In 2010 April, VERITAS detected a flare from M 87 with peak flux of (2.71 ± 0.68) × 10–11 cm–2 s–1 forE > 350 GeV. The source was observed for six consecutive nights during the flare, resulting in a total of 21 hr of good-quality data. The most rapid flux variation occurred on the trailing edge of the flare with an exponential flux decay time of 0.90+0.22 –0.15 days. The shortest detected exponential rise time is three times as long, at 2.87+1.65 –0.99 days. The quality of the data sample is such that spectral analysis can be performed for three periods: rising flux, peak flux, and falling flux. The spectra obtained are consistent with power-law forms. The spectral index at the peak of the flare is equal to 2.19 ± 0.07. There is some indication that the spectrum is softer in the falling phase of the flare than the peak phase, with a confidence level corresponding to 3.6 standard deviations. We discuss the implications of these results for the acceleration and cooling rates of VHE electrons in M 87 and the constraints they provide on the physical size of the emitting region.

  • Constraints on Cosmic Rays, Magnetic Fields, and Dark Matter from Gamma-Ray Observations of the Coma Cluster of Galaxies with VERITAS and Fermi
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 757:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery of TeV gamma-ray emission coincident with the shell-type radio supernova remnant (SNR) CTA 1 using the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory. The source, VER J0006+729, was detected as a 6.5 standard deviation excess over background and shows an extended morphology, approximated by a two-dimensional Gaussian of semimajor (semiminor) axis 030 (024) and a centroid 5' from the Fermi gamma-ray pulsar PSR J0007+7303 and its X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN). The photon spectrum is well described by a power-law dN/dE = N 0(E/3 TeV)–Γ, with a differential spectral index of Γ = 2.2 ± 0.2stat ± 0.3sys, and normalization N 0 = (9.1 ± 1.3stat ± 1.7sys) × 10–14 cm–2 s–1 TeV–1. The integral flux, F γ = 4.0 ×10–12 erg cm–2 s–1 above 1 TeV, corresponds to 0.2% of the pulsar spin-down power at 1.4 kpc. The energetics, colocation with the SNR, and the relatively small extent of the TeV emission strongly argue for the PWN origin of the TeV photons. We consider the origin of the TeV emission in CTA 1.

  • Gamma-Ray Observations of the Be/Pulsar Binary 1A 0535+262 During a Giant X-Ray Outburst
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 733:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Giant X-ray outbursts, with luminosities of about 1037 erg s–1, are observed roughly every five years from the nearby Be/pulsar binary 1A 0535+262. In this article, we present observations of the source with VERITAS at very high energies (VHEs;E >100 GeV) triggered by the X-ray outburst in 2009 December. The observations started shortly after the onset of the outburst and provided comprehensive coverage of the episode, as well as the 111 day binary orbit. No VHE emission is evident at any time. We also examined data from the contemporaneous observations of 1A 0535+262 with the Fermi/Large Area Telescope at high-energy photons (E > 0.1 GeV) and failed to detect the source at GeV energies. The X-ray continua measured with theSwift/X-Ray Telescope and the RXTE/PCA can be well described by the combination of blackbody and Comptonized emission from thermal electrons. Therefore, the gamma-ray and X-ray observations suggest the absence of a significant population of non-thermal particles in the system. This distinguishes 1A 0535+262 from those Be X-ray binaries (such as PSR B1259-63 and LS I +61°303) that have been detected at GeV-TeV energies. We discuss the implications of the results on theoretical models.

  • Comparative genomics reveals insights into avian genome evolution and adaptation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 346:6215, s. 1311-1320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Birds are the most species-rich class of tetrapod vertebrates and have wide relevance across many research fields. We explored bird macroevolution using full genomes from 48 avian species representing all major extant clades. The avian genome is principally characterized by its constrained size, which predominantly arose because of lineage-specific erosion of repetitive elements, large segmental deletions, and gene loss. Avian genomes furthermore show a remarkably high degree of evolutionary stasis at the levels of nucleotide sequence, gene synteny, and chromosomal structure. Despite this pattern of conservation, we detected many non-neutral evolutionary changes in protein-coding genes and noncoding regions. These analyses reveal that pan-avian genomic diversity covaries with adaptations to different lifestyles and convergent evolution of traits.

  • Study of electric field enhanced emission rates of an electron trap in n-type GaN grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : American Institute of Physics. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 108:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electric field-enhanced emission of electrons from a deep level defect in GaN grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy has been studied. Using the field dependent mode of conventional deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), several frequency scans were performed keeping applied electric field (12.8-31.4 MV/m) and sample temperature (300-360 K) constant. Arrhenius plots of the resultant data yielded an activation energy of the electron trap E ranging from E-c -0.48 +/- 0.02 eV to E-c-0.35 +/- 0.02 eV, respectively. The extrapolation of the as-measured field dependent data (activation energy) revealed the zero-field emission energy (pure thermal activation energy) of the trap to be 0.55 +/- 0.02 eV. Various theoretical models were applied to justify the field-enhanced emission of the carriers from the trap. Eventually it was found that the Poole-Frenkel model associated with a square well potential of radius r=4.8 nm was consistent with the experimental data, and, as a result, the trap is attributed to a charged impurity. Earlier, qualitative measurements like current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements were performed, and screening parameters of the device were extracted to ascertain the reliability of DLTS data.

  • Fabrication of cadmium titanate nanofibers via electrospinning technique
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ceramics International. - : Elsevier. - 0272-8842 .- 1873-3956. ; 38:4, s. 3361-3365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we present an electrospinning technique for the fabrication of cadmium titanate/polyvinyl-pyrrolidone composite nanofibers. The composite nanofibers are then annealed at 600 degrees C to obtain ilmenite rhombohedral phase cadmium titanate nanofibers. The structure, composition, thermal stability and optical properties of as synthesized and annealed cadmium titanate nanofibers are characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The average diameter and length of the nanofibers are found to be similar to 150-200 nm and similar to 100 mu m, respectively.

  • Systematic Review of Oncological Outcomes Following Surgical Management of Localised Renal Cancer
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0302-2838 .- 1873-7560. ; 61:5, s. 972-993
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for 2-3% of adult malignancies. There remain uncertainties over the oncological outcomes for the surgical management of localised RCC. Objective: Systematically review relevant literature comparing oncological outcomes of surgical management of localised RCC (T1-2N0M0). Evidence acquisition: Relevant databases including Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched up to October 2010, and an updated scoping search was performed up to January 2012. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs, prospective observational studies with controls, retrospective matched-pair studies, and comparative studies from well-defined registries/databases were included. The main outcomes were overall survival, cancer-specific survival, recurrence, and metastases. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess RCTs, and an extended version was used to assess nonrandomised studies (NRSs). The quality of evidence was assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Evidence synthesis: A total of 4580 abstracts and 389 full-text articles were assessed. Thirty-four studies met the inclusion criteria (6 RCTs and 28 NRSs). Meta-analyses were planned but were deemed inappropriate due to data heterogeneity. There were high risks of bias and low-quality evidence across the evidence base. Open radical nephrectomy and open partial nephrectomy showed similar cancer-specific and overall survival, but when both open and laparoscopic approaches are considered together, the evidence showed improved survival for partial nephrectomy for tumours <= 4 cm. The overall evidence suggests either equivalent or better survival with partial nephrectomy. Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy offered equivalent survival to open radical nephrectomy, and all laparoscopic approaches achieved equivalent survival. Open and laparoscopic partial nephrectomy achieved equivalent survival. The issue of ipsilateral adrenalectomy or complete lymph node dissection with radical nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy remains unresolved. Conclusions: The evidence base suggests localised RCCs are best managed by nephron-sparing surgery where technically feasible. However, the current evidence base has significant limitations due to studies of low methodological quality marked by high risks of bias. (C) 2012 European Association of Urology. • Interface state density of free-standing GaN Schottky diodes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Semiconductor Science and Technology. - : Iop Publishing Ltd. - 0268-1242 .- 1361-6641. ; 25:9, s. 095008-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Schottky diodes were fabricated on the HVPE-grown, free-standing gallium nitride (GaN) layers of n- and p-types. Both contacts (ohmic and Schottky) were deposited on the top surface using Al/Ti and Pd/Ti/Au, respectively. The Schottky diode fabricated on n-GaN exhibited double barriers with values of 0.9 and 0.6 eV and better performance in the rectification factor together with reverse and forward currents with an ideality factor of 1.8. The barrier height for the p-GaN Schottky diode is 0.6 eV with an ideality factor of 4.16. From the capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurement, the net doping concentration of n-GaN is 4 x 10(17) cm(-3), resulting in a lower reverse breakdown of around -12 V. The interface state density (N-SS) as a function of E-C-E-SS is found to be in the range 4.23 x 10(12)-3.87 x 10(11) eV(-1) cm(-2) (below the conduction band) from Ec-0.90 to E-C-0.99. Possible reasons responsible for the low barrier height and high ideality factor have been addressed.
