  • Genomic analysis of sewage from 101 countries reveals global landscape of antimicrobial resistance
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to global health. Understanding the emergence, evolution, and transmission of individual antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is essential to develop sustainable strategies combatting this threat. Here, we use metagenomic sequencing to analyse ARGs in 757 sewage samples from 243 cities in 101 countries, collected from 2016 to 2019. We find regional patterns in resistomes, and these differ between subsets corresponding to drug classes and are partly driven by taxonomic variation. The genetic environments of 49 common ARGs are highly diverse, with most common ARGs carried by multiple distinct genomic contexts globally and sometimes on plasmids. Analysis of flanking sequence revealed ARG-specific patterns of dispersal limitation and global transmission. Our data furthermore suggest certain geographies are more prone to transmission events and should receive additional attention.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Astrophysics. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-4048 .- 2214-4056. ; 34, s. 49-211

    • The standard Λ Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model provides a good description of a wide range of astrophysical and cosmological data. However, there are a few big open questions that make the standard model look like an approximation to a more realistic scenario yet to be found. In this paper, we list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant H0, the σ8–S8 tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the 5.0σ tension between the Planck CMB estimate of the Hubble constant H0 and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the H0 evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the Planck CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density Ωm, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure (σ8,fσ8). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the H0–S8 tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals. Finally, we give an overview of upgraded experiments and next-generation space missions and facilities on Earth that will be of crucial importance to address all these open questions.

  • Association between convalescent plasma treatment and mortality in COVID-19 : a collaborative systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Infectious Diseases. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1471-2334. ; 21:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Convalescent plasma has been widely used to treat COVID-19 and is under investigation in numerous randomized clinical trials, but results are publicly available only for a small number of trials. The objective of this study was to assess the benefits of convalescent plasma treatment compared to placebo or no treatment and all-cause mortality in patients with COVID-19, using data from all available randomized clinical trials, including unpublished and ongoing trials (Open Science Framework, ). Methods: In this collaborative systematic review and meta-analysis, clinical trial registries (ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform), the Cochrane COVID-19 register, the LOVE database, and PubMed were searched until April 8, 2021. Investigators of trials registered by March 1, 2021, without published results were contacted via email. Eligible were ongoing, discontinued and completed randomized clinical trials that compared convalescent plasma with placebo or no treatment in COVID-19 patients, regardless of setting or treatment schedule. Aggregated mortality data were extracted from publications or provided by investigators of unpublished trials and combined using the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman random effects model. We investigated the contribution of unpublished trials to the overall evidence. Results: A total of 16,477 patients were included in 33 trials (20 unpublished with 3190 patients, 13 published with 13,287 patients). 32 trials enrolled only hospitalized patients (including 3 with only intensive care unit patients). Risk of bias was low for 29/33 trials. Of 8495 patients who received convalescent plasma, 1997 died (23%), and of 7982 control patients, 1952 died (24%). The combined risk ratio for all-cause mortality was 0.97 (95% confidence interval: 0.92; 1.02) with between-study heterogeneity not beyond chance (I-2 = 0%). The RECOVERY trial had 69.8% and the unpublished evidence 25.3% of the weight in the meta-analysis. Conclusions: Convalescent plasma treatment of patients with COVID-19 did not reduce all-cause mortality. These results provide strong evidence that convalescent plasma treatment for patients with COVID-19 should not be used outside of randomized trials. Evidence synthesis from collaborations among trial investigators can inform both evidence generation and evidence application in patient care.

  • Examination of how properties of a fissioning system impact isomeric yield ratios of the fragments
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 108:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The population of isomeric states in the prompt decay of fission fragments-so-called isomeric yield ratios (IYRs)-is known to be sensitive to the angular momentum J that the fragment emerged with, and may therefore contain valuable information on the mechanism behind the fission process. In this work, we investigate how changes in the fissioning system impact the measured IYRs of fission fragments to learn more about what parameters affect angular momentum generation. To enable this, a new technique for measuring IYRs is first demonstrated. It is based on the time of arrival of discrete gamma rays, and has the advantage that it enables the study of the IYR as a function of properties of the partner nucleus. This technique is used to extract the IYR of 134Te, strongly populated in actinide fission, from the three different fissioning systems: 232Th(n, f), 238U(n, f), at two different neutron energies, as well as 252Cf(sf). The impacts of changing the fissioning system, the compound nuclear excitation energy, the minimum J of the binary partner, and the number of neutrons emitted on the IYR of 134Te are determined. The decay code TALYS is used in combination with the fission simulation code FREYA to calculate the primary fragment angular momentum from the IYR. We find that the IYR of 134Te has a slope of 0.004 +/- 0.002 with increase in compound nucleus (CN) mass. When investigating the impact on the IYR of increased CN excitation energy, we find no change with an energy increase similar to the difference between thermal and fast fission. By varying the mass of the partner fragment emerging with 134Te, it is revealed that the IYR of 134Te is independent of the total amount of prompt neutrons emitted from the fragment pair. This indicates that neutrons carry minimal angular momentum away from the fission fragments. Comparisons with the FREYA+TALYS simulations reveal that the average angular momentum in 134Te following 238U(n, f) is 6.0 h over bar . This is not consistent with the value deduced from recent CGMF calculations. Finally, the IYR sensitivity to the angular momentum of the primary fragment is discussed. These results are not only important to help understanding the underlying mechanism in nuclear fission, but can also be used to constrain and benchmark fission models, and are relevant to the gamma -ray heating problem of reactors.

  • ENIGMA and global neuroscience: A decade of large-scale studies of the brain in health and disease across more than 40 countries
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Translational psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2158-3188. ; 10:1, s. 100-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review summarizes the last decade of work by the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium, a global alliance of over 1400 scientists across 43 countries, studying the human brain in health and disease. Building on large-scale genetic studies that discovered the first robustly replicated genetic loci associated with brain metrics, ENIGMA has diversified into over 50 working groups (WGs), pooling worldwide data and expertise to answer fundamental questions in neuroscience, psychiatry, neurology, and genetics. Most ENIGMA WGs focus on specific psychiatric and neurological conditions, other WGs study normal variation due to sex and gender differences, or development and aging; still other WGs develop methodological pipelines and tools to facilitate harmonized analyses of “big data” (i.e., genetic and epigenetic data, multimodal MRI, and electroencephalography data). These international efforts have yielded the largest neuroimaging studies to date in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. More recent ENIGMA WGs have formed to study anxiety disorders, suicidal thoughts and behavior, sleep and insomnia, eating disorders, irritability, brain injury, antisocial personality and conduct disorder, and dissociative identity disorder. Here, we summarize the first decade of ENIGMA’s activities and ongoing projects, and describe the successes and challenges encountered along the way. We highlight the advantages of collaborative large-scale coordinated data analyses for testing reproducibility and robustness of findings, offering the opportunity to identify brain systems involved in clinical syndromes across diverse samples and associated genetic, environmental, demographic, cognitive, and psychosocial factors.

  • Structural neuroimaging biomarkers for obsessive-compulsive disorder in the ENIGMA-OCD consortium: medication matters
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Translational psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2158-3188. ; 10:1, s. 342-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • No diagnostic biomarkers are available for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Here, we aimed to identify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarkers for OCD, using 46 data sets with 2304 OCD patients and 2068 healthy controls from the ENIGMA consortium. We performed machine learning analysis of regional measures of cortical thickness, surface area and subcortical volume and tested classification performance using cross-validation. Classification performance for OCD vs. controls using the complete sample with different classifiers and cross-validation strategies was poor. When models were validated on data from other sites, model performance did not exceed chance-level. In contrast, fair classification performance was achieved when patients were grouped according to their medication status. These results indicate that medication use is associated with substantial differences in brain anatomy that are widely distributed, and indicate that clinical heterogeneity contributes to the poor performance of structural MRI as a disease marker.

  • The Second International Asteroid Warning Network Timing Campaign: 2005 LW3
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Planetary Science Journal. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 2632-3338. ; 4:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Earth close approach of near-Earth asteroid 2005 LW3 on 2022 November 23 represented a good opportunity for a second observing campaign to test the timing accuracy of astrometric observation. With 82 participating stations, the International Asteroid Warning Network collected 1046 observations of 2005 LW3 around the time of the close approach. Compared to the previous timing campaign targeting 2019 XS, some individual observers were able to significantly improve the accuracy of their reported observation times. In particular, U.S. surveys achieved good timing performance. However, no broad, systematic improvement was achieved compared to the previous campaign, with an overall negative bias persisting among the different observers. The calibration of observing times and the mitigation of timing errors should be important future considerations for observers and orbit computers, respectively.

  • The biogeography of community assembly: latitude and predation drive variation in community trait distribution in a guild of epifaunal crustaceans
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 1471-2954 .- 0962-8452. ; 289:1969
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While considerable evidence exists of biogeographic patterns in the intensity of species interactions, the influence of these patterns on variation in community structure is less clear. Studying how the distributions of traits in communities vary along global gradients can inform how variation in interactions and other factors contribute to the process of community assembly. Using a model selection approach on measures of trait dispersion in crustaceans associated with eelgrass (Zostera marina) spanning 30° of latitude in two oceans, we found that dispersion strongly increased with increasing predation and decreasing latitude. Ocean and epiphyte load appeared as secondary predictors; Pacific communities were more overdispersed while Atlantic communities were more clustered, and increasing epiphytes were associated with increased clustering. By examining how species interactions and environmental filters influence community structure across biogeographic regions, we demonstrate how both latitudinal variation in species interactions and historical contingency shape these responses. Community trait distributions have implications for ecosystem stability and functioning, and integrating large-scale observations of environmental filters, species interactions and traits can help us predict how communities may respond to environmental change.

    • We need high-quality data to assess the determinants for COVID-19 severity in people with MS (PwMS). Several studies have recently emerged but there is great benefit in aligning data collection efforts at a global scale. Objectives: Our mission is to scale-up COVID-19 data collection efforts and provide the MS community with data-driven insights as soon as possible. Methods: Numerous stakeholders were brought together. Small dedicated interdisciplinary task forces were created to speed-up the formulation of the study design and work plan. First step was to agree upon a COVID-19 MS core data set. Second, we worked on providing a user-friendly and rapid pipeline to share COVID-19 data at a global scale. Results: The COVID-19 MS core data set was agreed within 48 hours. To date, 23 data collection partners are involved and the first data imports have been performed successfully. Data processing and analysis is an on-going process. Conclusions: We reached a consensus on a core data set and established data sharing processes with multiple partners to address an urgent need for information to guide clinical practice. First results show that partners are motivated to share data to attain the ultimate joint goal: better understand the effect of COVID-19 in PwMS.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • X-ray microscopy offers the opportunity to image biological and radiosensitive materials without special sample preparations, bridging optical and electron microscopy capabilities. However, the performance of such microscopes, when imaging radiosensitive samples, is not limited by their intrinsic resolution, but by the radiation damage induced on such samples. Here, we demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, radio-efficient microscope, scanning Compton X-ray microscopy (SCXM), which uses coherently and incoherently (Compton) scattered photons to minimize the deposited energy per unit of mass for a given imaging signal. We implemented SCXM, using lenses capable of efficiently focusing 60 keV X-ray photons into the sub-micrometer scale, and probe its radio-efficient capabilities. SCXM, when implemented in high-energy diffraction-limited storage rings, e.g., European Synchrotron Radiation Facility Extremely Brilliant Source and PETRA IV, will open the opportunity to explore the nanoscale of unstained, unsectioned, and undamaged radiosensitive materials.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Semiconductors (Woodbury, N.Y.). - : PLEIADES PUBLISHING INC. - 1063-7826 .- 1090-6479. ; 54:1, s. 127-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The GaN planar hexagonal microcavities are grown by the selective vapor-phase epitaxy technique. The spectra are measured by the low-temperature cathodoluminescence method using a scanning electron microscope. The obtained spectra show a huge Rabi splitting (similar to 100 meV). Numerical simulation of the spatial distribution of the intensities of modes in a hexagonal cavity is carried out. Certain modes can have a high spatial localization leading to strong coupling with the exciton and huge Rabi splitting. The fraction of excitons in polariton modes, which correlates with the intensity of exciton radiation associated with these modes, is theoretically calculated for hexagonal-shaped microcavities. Thus, the form of the dependence of the radiation probability on the eigenfrequencies of the structure is obtained.

  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 119:32

    • Distribution of Earth's biomes is structured by the match between climate and plant traits, which in turn shape associated communities and ecosystem processes and services. However, that climate-trait match can be disrupted by historical events, with lasting ecosystem impacts. As Earth's environment changes faster than at any time in human history, critical questions are whether and how organismal traits and ecosystems can adjust to altered conditions. We quantified the relative importance of current environmental forcing versus evolutionary history in shaping the growth form (stature and biomass) and associated community of eelgrass (Zostera marina), a widespread foundation plant of marine ecosystems along Northern Hemisphere coastlines, which experienced major shifts in distribution and genetic composition during the Pleistocene. We found that eelgrass stature and biomass retain a legacy of the Pleistocene colonization of the Atlantic from the ancestral Pacific range and of more recent within-basin bottlenecks and genetic differentiation. This evolutionary legacy in turn influences the biomass of associated algae and invertebrates that fuel coastal food webs, with effects comparable to or stronger than effects of current environmental forcing. Such historical lags in phenotypic acclimatization may constrain ecosystem adjustments to rapid anthropogenic climate change, thus altering predictions about the future functioning of ecosystems.

    • The motion of domain walls in ferrimagnets near the sublattice spin compensation point is studied theoretically, when there is an exchange enhancement in the limiting velocity of the wall. Nonlinear regimes of high-velocity nonstationary wall motion are found. A magnet parameter region in which the collective variable approach is invalid, is detected. In this region, the wall motion is accompanied by the periodic appearance of instability with respect to the increase in spin oscillations inside the domain wall.

  • Expanding catalytic sensor capabilities to combustible gas mixtures monitoring
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Measurement. - : Elsevier. - 0263-2241 .- 1873-412X. ; 194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preventing the explosion of mixtures of combustible gases and vapors is an important task in industry. This research presents an approach for rapid assessment of the explosiveness of combustible gas mixtures of unknown composition. The technique is based on registering the amount of heat released during the combustion of a portion of gases inside the catalytic sensor. The phenomenological theory of the approach for rapid assessment of the explosiveness was also presented. To carry out the measurements, a two-stage heating pulse and an approach to the calibration of the catalytic sensor were developed. The experiments were carried out for various mixtures of methane, propane, butane and hexane within the pre-explosive range (up to 50% Low Explosive Limit). In order to calculate the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) of a mixture of flammable gases, Le Chatelier's rule was used. Industrial catalytic sensors with additional diaphragm that limits the gas leakage into the sensor were used for measurements. The advanced data processing which is based on integrating the area under the measured dependence of sensor response on time was used to calculate the heat released. The parameters affecting the measurement results were analyzed. The measurement values were in good agreement with the prescribed values. The measurement errors did not exceed 10%. Since in this approach there is no need to identify gases, or their quantity and concentration, it can be used in industry for quick determination of potentially explosive mixtures in the air.

  • Ingår i: Leukemia and Lymphoma. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1042-8194 .- 1029-2403. ; 61:3, s. 604-613
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 (iAMP21) is a cytogenetic subtype associated with relapse and poor prognosis in pediatric B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP ALL). The biology behind the high relapse risk is unknown and the aim of this study was to further characterize the genomic and transcriptional landscape of iAMP21. Using DNA arrays and sequencing, we could identify rearrangements and aberrations characteristic for iAMP21. RNA sequencing revealed that only half of the genes in the minimal region of amplification (20/45) were differentially expressed in iAMP21. Among them were the top overexpressed genes (p < 0.001) in iAMP21 vs. BCP ALL without iAMP21 and three candidate genes could be identified, the tyrosine kinase gene DYRK1A and chromatin remodeling genes CHAF1B and SON. While overexpression of DYRK1A and CHAF1B is associated with poor prognosis in malignant diseases including myeloid leukemia, this is the first study to show significant correlation with iAMP21-positive ALL.

    • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

    • The highest resolution of images of soft matter and biological materials is ultimately limited by modification of the structure, induced by the necessarily high energy of short-wavelength radiation. Imaging the inelastically scattered X-rays at a photon energy of 60 keV (0.02 nm wavelength) offers greater signal per energy transferred to the sample than coherent-scattering techniques such as phase-contrast microscopy and projection holography. We present images of dried, unstained, and unfixed biological objects obtained by scanning Compton X-ray microscopy, at a resolution of about 70 nm. This microscope was realised using novel wedged multilayer Laue lenses that were fabricated to sub-ångström precision, a new wavefront measurement scheme for hard X rays, and efficient pixel-array detectors. The doses required to form these images were as little as 0.02% of the tolerable dose and 0.05% of that needed for phase-contrast imaging at similar resolution using 17 keV photon energy. The images obtained provide a quantitative map of the projected mass density in the sample, as confirmed by imaging a silicon wedge. Based on these results, we find that it should be possible to obtain radiation damage-free images of biological samples at a resolution below 10 nm.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two new crystalline dithiocarbamato-chlorido complexes of mercury(II), [Hg2{S2CN(C4H9)2}2Cl2] (1) and [Hg4{S2CN(iso-C4H9)2}6][Hg2Cl6] (2), have been prepared and chemically identified by solution (1H, 13C) NMR and solid-state (13C, 15N) CP-MAS NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The crystal, molecular and supramolecular structures of these compounds were established using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The obtained complexes reveal two principally different types of structural organisation. In the structure of the former neutral complex, there are two isomeric doubly-bridged binuclear molecules [Hg2(S2CNBu2)2Cl2] (‘A’ and ‘B’), whereas the latter compound comprises two ionic structural moieties: the tetranuclear cation [Hg4(S2CNiBu2)6]2+ and the binuclear anion [Hg2Cl6]2−. In both ionic units, pairs of iBu2Dtc or chloride ligands, which perform a bridging structural function, combine with neighbouring mercury atoms. In turn, intermolecular/interionic secondary interactions Hg···S/Hg···Cl are involved in the formation of supramolecular structures of complexes 1/2, yielding pseudo-polymeric chains of (···‘A’···‘B’···)n/(···[Hg4(S2CNiBu2)6]···[Hg2Cl6]···)n, which exhibit alternation of isomeric molecules of 1/ionic moieties of 2 along their lengths. Despite the significant structural difference between the above complexes, we established, using simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), that both exhibit very similar thermal behaviour. Moreover, during the thermal transformations of both compounds 1 and 2, the same two substances are generated: HgCl2 and HgS.

  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 3rd 2021 International Youth Conference on Radio Electronics, Electrical and Power Engineering, REEPE 2021.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of chemical, quantitative, and layer-by-layer phase analysis of a 10 nm thick niobium thin film created by magnetron sputtering and subsequently oxidized in air. The analysis was performed before and after long-term delicate modification by argon ions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy using numerical simulation of the interaction of ion beams with the target surface in the SRIM software package. At different durations of low-current ion sputtering of niobium oxide, the formation of metastable stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric nanosuboxide layers of various thicknesses, as well as their sputtering, was found. The study shows that it is possible to create the necessary nanosuboxide layers, the structure of which is determined by the performance of functional devices.

  • Direct evidence of real-space pairing in BaBiO3
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Research. - : American Physical Society. - 2643-1564. ; 6:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The parent compound BaBiO3 of bismuthate high-temperature superconductors (HTSCs) BaBi(Pb)O3 and Ba(K)BiO3 with perovskitelike structure exhibits unusual electronic and structural properties, which can be satisfactorily explained if we assume that all charge carriers are in the paired state. However, the prior experiments and the first-principle calculations only indirectly indicate the existence of paired charge carriers in BaBiO3. In this work, we report the direct evidence of initially paired electrons and holes in the upper antibonding Bi 6s-O 2p sigma* orbital of the neighboring octahedral complexes in the ground state of BaBiO3 using the time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to monitor the electron dynamics after the femtosecond resonant 633 nm laser excitation. We observe strong changes in the oxygen K-edge XAS preedge region, defined by the Bi 6s-O 2p sigma* orbitals. We interpret them as a fast (<= 0.3 ps) breaking of charge carrier pairs and slower (0.3-0.8 ps) lattice rearrangement from the distorted monoclinic structure into the new metastable state with a cubic lattice, which persists at least up to 60 ps after the excitation. Analysis of the intermediate state at the fast excitation shows that the bond disproportionation and monoclinic distortion of BaBiO3 structure are energetically favorable due to the charge carrier pairing. Thus the compound BaBiO3 forms a new quantum state that we define as a local pair density wave. Taking into account a large number of similarities between bismuthate and cuprate high-temperature superconductors, we believe that our work will give a new impetus to understanding the nature of superconductivity in perovskite HTSCs.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crystalline bismuth(III) dithiocarbamato-chlorido complexes [Bi{S2CN(C3H7)2}Cl2] (I) and [Bi{S2CN(iso-C4H9)2}2Cl] (II) were prepared and comparatively studied by (13C, 15N) CP-MAS NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (CIF files CCDC nos. 1971976 and 1971975, respectively). The dithiocarbamate ligands are typically coordinated in the S,S'-iso- (I) or aniso- (II) bidentate-terminal mode. In each of the compounds, neighboring molecules are connected through one or two μ2-Cl– ligands into zigzag-like polymer chains, in which the central atom has sixfold coordination: [BiS2Cl4] (I) or [BiS4Cl2] (II). The binding unit in the polymer chains of I is a four-membered [Bi–(μ-Cl)2–Bi] metallocycle in the butterfly conformation (the dihedral angle is 140.51(3)°). Therefore, stronger binding of heteroleptic molecules in polymer chains leads to a considerably shorter interatomic Bi–Bi distances in I (4.0904(4) Å) than in II (4.8772(4) Å). The thermal behavior of heteroleptic bismuth(III) complexes was studied by simultaneous thermal analysis with recording of TG and DSC curves. Although the major product of thermal transformations of I and II is Bi2S3, the microprobe method also identified the presence of reduced bismuth and BiCl3.

  • Planetary polar explorer – the case for a next-generation remote sensing mission to low Mars orbit
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 54, s. 695-711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose the exploration of polar areas on Mars by a next-generation orbiter mission. In particular, we aim at studying the seasonal and regional variations in snow-deposits, which – in combination with measurements of temporal variations in rotation and gravity field – will improve models of the global planetary CO2 cycle. A monitoring of polar scarps for rock falls and avalanche events may provide insights into the dynamics of ice sheets. The mapping of the complex layering of polar deposits, believed to contain an important record of climate history, may help us understand the early climate collapse on the planet. Hence, we propose an innovative next-generation exploration mission in polar circular Low Mars Orbit, which will be of interest to scientists and challenging to engineers alike. Schemes will be developed to overcome atmosphere drag forces acting upon the spacecraft by an electric propulsion system. Based on the experience of missions of similar type in Earth orbit we believe that a two-year mission in circular orbit is possible at altitudes as low as 150 km. Such a mission opens new opportunities for novel remote sensing approaches, not requiring excessive telescope equipment or power. We anticipate precision altimetry, powerful radars, high-resolution imaging, and magnetic field mapping. © 2022, The Author(s).

  • Emission Properties of GaN Planar Hexagonal Microcavities
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi (a) applications and materials science. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1862-6300 .- 1862-6319. ; 217:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fabrication of microcavities based on III-nitrides is challenging due to difficulties with the coherent growth of heterostructures having a large number of periods, at the same time keeping a good precision in terms of thickness and composition of the alloy. A planar design for GaN microresonators supporting whispering gallery modes is suggested. GaN hexagonal microstructures are fabricated by selective-area metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using focused ion beam for mask patterning. Low-temperature cathodoluminescence spectra measured with a high spatial resolution demonstrate two dominant emission lines in the near bandgap region. These lines merge at room temperature into a broad emission band peaking at approximate to 3.3 eV, which is shifted toward lower energies compared with the reference excitonic spectrum measured for the GaN layer. A numerical analysis of exciton-polariton modes shows that some strongly localized cavity modes can have high Purcell coefficients and can strongly interact with the GaN exciton.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two polymorphs of a new mercury(II) N,N-dipropyldithiocarbamate represented by centrosymmetric binuclear and pseudo-binuclear molecules, [Hg2(PrDtc)4] (1) and [Hg(PrDtc)2]2 (2), have been isolated, identified using heteronuclear (13C, 15N) CP-MAS NMR and structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. There are two pairs of inequivalent PrDtc ligands playing either terminal chelating or tridentate bridging structural functions in the former compound; while the latter complex comprises two pairs of structurally inequivalent chelating PrDtc ligands. The reaction of freshly precipitated mercury(II) N,N-dipropyldithiocarbamate (HgPrDtc) with a [AuCl4]−/2 M HCl solution results in the formation of the ionic complex [Au(PrDtc)2]2[Hg2Cl6] (3). There are two inequivalent centrosymmetric cations, [Au(PrDtc)2]+ (‘A’ and ‘B’), and a binuclear centrosymmetric anion, [Hg2Cl6]2− in the structure of 3. In the cationic part of the complex, each of the gold(III) cations has two pairs of the relatively weak inequivalent secondary Au···S bonds with two neighbours, therefore forming linear supramolecular cationic chains (⋯‘A’⋯‘B’⋯‘A’⋯‘B’⋯)n. To study the thermal behaviour of the compounds, simultaneous thermal analysis was also performed. The formation of HgS and reduced elemental gold was established during the thermolysis of 1/2 and 3, respectively.

  • A molecular-based identification resource for the arthropods of Finland
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Molecular Ecology Resources. - : Wiley. - 1755-098X .- 1755-0998. ; 22:2, s. 803-822
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To associate specimens identified by molecular characters to other biological knowledge, we need reference sequences annotated by Linnaean taxonomy. In this study, we (1) report the creation of a comprehensive reference library of DNA barcodes for the arthropods of an entire country (Finland), (2) publish this library, and (3) deliver a new identification tool for insects and spiders, as based on this resource. The reference library contains mtDNA COI barcodes for 11,275 (43%) of 26,437 arthropod species known from Finland, including 10,811 (45%) of 23,956 insect species. To quantify the improvement in identification accuracy enabled by the current reference library, we ran 1000 Finnish insect and spider species through the Barcode of Life Data system (BOLD) identification engine. Of these, 91% were correctly assigned to a unique species when compared to the new reference library alone, 85% were correctly identified when compared to BOLD with the new material included, and 75% with the new material excluded. To capitalize on this resource, we used the new reference material to train a probabilistic taxonomic assignment tool, FinPROTAX, scoring high success. For the full-length barcode region, the accuracy of taxonomic assignments at the level of classes, orders, families, subfamilies, tribes, genera, and species reached 99.9%, 99.9%, 99.8%, 99.7%, 99.4%, 96.8%, and 88.5%, respectively. The FinBOL arthropod reference library and FinPROTAX are available through the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (www.laji.fi) at https://laji.fi/en/theme/protax. Overall, the FinBOL investment represents a massive capacity-transfer from the taxonomic community of Finland to all sectors of society.

  • Interplay between thin silver films and epitaxial graphene
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin Ag films, with nominal thickness in the range 2 to 30 nm, are deposited using direct current magnetron sputtering and film morphology is studied by means of plan-view scanning electron microscopy. We find that for 2 mn nominal thickness the film surface consists of isolated circular nanoscale islands, which become interconnected as further material is deposited, leading to a continuous film at a nominal thickness of 30 nm. Our experimental findings are discussed in the context of the density functional theory results, which show that van der Waals forces dominate the interaction between Ag and epitaxial graphene. We also performed micro-Raman analysis and we find that the G and 2D modes of epitaxial graphene exhibit a red-shift upon Ag-layer deposition; which is interpreted as a result of charge transfer at the Ag/graphene interface. Moreover, we observed a pronounced enhancement of the G peak amplitude and area irrespective of the film nominal thickness and morphology, which we attribute to a combination of the charge transfer and plasmonic resonance effects. Our observations provide a critical information on the interaction between Ag and epitaxial graphene, which can be useful to design electronic and sensing devices based on Ag-epitaxial graphene hybrids.

  • Silver nanoparticle array on weakly interacting epitaxial graphene substrate as catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction under neutral conditions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 119:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paucity of research on hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under neutral conditions, which is a more sustainable way to produce H-2 compared to acidic and alkaline HER, encourages the development of efficient catalytic materials and devices and deeper investigation of the mechanisms behind neutral HER. We present an electrode concept for facilitating HER under neutral conditions. The concept entails the use of annealing-reshaped silver (Ag) nanoparticle array on monolayer epitaxial graphene (MEG) on 4H-SiC. Measurements of HER performance show more positive onset potential of the cathodic HER for Ag-decorated MEG compared to that for pristine MEG, indicating improved water dissociation at Ag/MEG electrodes. Complementary morphological characterization, absorption measurements, and Raman mapping analysis enable us to ascribe the enhanced catalytic performance of electrodes decorated with 2 nm thick annealed Ag on the synergetic effect originating from simultaneous water reduction on circular Ag nanoparticles of 31 nm in diameter and on compressively strained Ag-free graphene regions. The overall results pave the way toward development of stable van der Waals heterostructure electrodes with a tunable metal-carbon interaction for fast HER under neutral conditions.
