  • Screening War and Peace: Newsreel Pragmatism in Neutral Sweden, September 1939 and May 1945
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Researching Newsreels: Local, National and Transnational Case Studies / Chambers, Ciara, Jönsson, Mats, Vande Winkel, Roel (eds.). - Cham : Springer International Publishing - Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319919195 ; , s. 157-182
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This volume addresses the underscrutinised topic of cinema newsreels. These short, multi-themed newsfilms, usually accompanied by explanatory intertitles or voiceovers, were a central part of the filmgoing experience around the world from 1910 through the late 1960s, and in many cases even later. As the only source of moving image news available before the widespread advent of television, newsreels are important social documents, recording what the general public was told and shown about the events and personalities of the day. Often disregarded as quirky or trivial, they were heavily utilised as propaganda vehicles, offering insights into the socio-political norms reflected in cinema during the first half of the twentieth century. The book presents a range of current research being undertaken in newsreel studies internationally and makes a case for a reconsideration of the importance of newsreels in the wider landscape of film history.

  • Insights of Hindsight: On past and present uses of film for future media and information literacy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Understanding media and information literacy (MIL) in the digital age : a question of democracy / edited by Ulla Carlsson. - Göteborg : Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG). - 9789188212870 ; , s. 139-143
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many contemporary efforts to improve media and information literacy (MIL) still exclude two important factors – film and history. To explain why such an oversight might be counterproductive, discourses surrounding Swedish educational films 1910–1930 are combined with reflections on their pedagogical potentials today. State authorities and individual pioneers, respectively controlling and promoting the domestic film culture, are presented. Examples illustrating that film formerly was seen as an important pedagogical medium and an empirically valid prime source material worth archiving are also high- lighted. Two reasons for and a potential solution of future MIL challenges are finally presented.

  • Non -Fiction Film Culture in Sweden circa 1920–1960: Pragmatic Governance and Consensual Solidarity in a Welfare State
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: A Companion to Nordic Cinema / edited by Mette Hjort and Ursula Lindqvist. - Malden, Ma. : Wiley-Blackwell. - 9781118475256 ; , s. 125-148
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chapter sketches key developments within five types of Swedish non‐fiction film: educational film, advertising film, election film, newsreel, and amateur film. The focus lies on the ways in which these media practices were discussed, taught, organized, and carried out circa 1920–1960. In Sweden, the better part of this period was characterized by an unsurpassed increase in living standards set in motion by an almost constant financial growth that occurred within one of the largest and most successful social engineering projects ever undertaken, the Swedish Model Welfare State. The role and function of film within this unique national context is under scrutiny.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
