    • New Caledonian crows (Corvus moneduloides) are prolific tool users in captivity and in the wild, and have an inherited predisposition to express tool-oriented behaviours. To further understand the evolution and development of tool use, we compared the development of object manipulation in New Caledonian crows and common ravens (Corvus corax), which do not routinely use tools. We found striking qualitative similarities in the ontogeny of tool-oriented behaviour in New Caledonian crows and food-caching behaviour in ravens. Given that the common ancestor of New Caledonian crows and ravens was almost certainly a caching species, we therefore propose that the basic action patterns for tool use in New Caledonian crows may have their evolutionary origins in caching behaviour. Noncombinatorial object manipulations had similar frequencies in the two species. However, frequencies of object combinations that are precursors to functional behaviour increased in New Caledonian crows and decreased in ravens throughout the study period, ending 6 weeks post-fledging. These quantitative observations are consistent with the hypothesis that New Caledonian crows develop tool-oriented behaviour because of an increased motivation to perform object combinations that facilitate the necessary learning.

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Lactobacillus from initial adherence to effects on human cells

    • The causative agent of gonorrhoea Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus) colonises the urogenital tract epithelia. The vaginal tract microbiota of healthy females is dominated by Lactobacillus species. In paper I, the ability of lactobacilli to protect cervical cells against gonococcal adherence was investigated. The number of adhered lactobacilli did not correlate to the level of protection against gonococci. Instead, the protection was dependent on specific Lactobacillus isolates. Gonococci able to outmanoeuvre the normal microbiota colonise and may elicit an influx of neutrophils. In paper II the initial interaction between pathogens and neutrophils was investigated. N. gonorrhoeae was found to bind to the non-phagocytic rear (uropod) of the neutrophils. Results suggest that uropod binding is a trait specific of Neisseria species. By binding to the uropod bacteria could avoid the phagocytic front part of the neutrophils whilst being transported across the epithelial cell layer to new sites. Since gonorrhoea has been associated with cancer in several studies, effects of gonococcal colonisation on eukaryote genome integrity was investigated in paper III.  N. gonorrhoeae caused DNA stand breaks in vaginal epithelial cells and decreased the level of tumor protein p53. Infected cells showed increase of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors p21 and p27 along with reduced proliferation. The impact of lactobacilli colonisation on cervical cell proliferation was investigated in paper IV. Three out of four Lactobacillus isolates tested reduced cell proliferation. Decreased pH due to lactic acid production was found to be a contributing factor. However, vaginal isolated L. gasseri required a direct bacteria-cell interaction to affect cell cycle progression. Additional unknown factors also contributed as in the case of saliva isolated L. reuteri. In summary, this thesis investigates N. gonorrhoeae pathogenesis and the impact of Lactobacillus species in protection and colonisation.

    • Many decisions in drug development and medical practice are based on measuring blood concentrations of endogenous and exogenous molecules. Yet most biochemical and pharmacological events take place in the tissues. Also, most drugs with few notable exceptions exert their effects not within the bloodstream, but in defined target tissues into which drugs have to distribute from the central compartment. Assessing tissue drug chemistry has, thus, for long been viewed as a more rational way to provide clinically meaningful data rather than gaining information from blood samples. More specifically, it is often the extracellular (interstitial) tissue space that is most closely related to the site of action (biophase) of the drug. Currently microdialysis (microD) is the only tool available that explicitly provides data on the extracellular space. Although microD as a preclinical and clinical tool has been available for two decades, there is still uncertainty about the use of microD in drug research and development, both from a methodological and a regulatory point of view. In an attempt to reduce this uncertainty and to provide an overview of the principles and applications of microD in preclinical and clinical settings, an AAPS-FDA workshop took place in November 2005 in Nashville, TN, USA. Stakeholders from academia, industry and regulatory agencies presented their views on microD as a tool in drug research and development.

  • The impact of mobility patterns on the efficiency of data forwarding in MANETs

    • One of the most challenging requirements in cutting-edge Mobile Ad hoc Networks is the need for adaptive and efficient routing. Networks capable of adapting their behavior based on current conditions are often characterized as self-organizing networks, which are lately considered very promising for future applications. This work examines the impact of the different mobility properties on the performance of self-organizing networks. For that purpose, a simulator was developed to model different mobility patterns and study the way they affect the effectiveness of the well-known AODV routing protocol. Particularly, this paper focuses on the effect of the different mobility schemes on network topology and consequently to the overall network performance. The results reveal the tight correlations between node mobility characteristics and network metrics.

    • This paper summarises ongoing research and recent results on the development of flexible access control infrastructure for complex resource provisioning in Grid-based collaborative applications and on-demand network services provisioning. The paper analyses the general access control model for Grid-based applications and discusses what mechanisms can be used for expressing and handling dynamic domain or process/workflowrelated security context. Suggestions are given on what specific functionality should be added to the Grid-oriented authorization frameworks to handle such dynamic security context. As an example, the paper explains how such functionality can be achieved in the GAAA Authorization framework (GAAA-AuthZ) and GAAA toolkit. Additionally, the paper describes AuthZ ticket format for extended AuthZ session management. The paper is based on experiences gained from major Grid-based and Grid-oriented projects such as EGEE, Phosphorus, NextGRID, and GigaPort Research on Network.

  • Variation in hyphal production rather than turnover regulates standing fungal biomass in temperate hardwood forests

    • Soil fungi link above- and belowground carbon (C) fluxes through their interactions with plants and contribute to C and nutrient dynamics through the production, turnover, and activity of fungal hyphae. Despite their importance to ecosystem processes, estimates of hyphal production and turnover rates are relatively uncommon, especially in temperate hardwood forests. We sequentially harvested hyphal ingrowth bags to quantify the rates of Dikarya (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) hyphal production and turnover in three hardwood forests in the Midwestern United States, where plots differed in their abundance of arbuscular (AM)-vs. ectomycorrhizal (ECM)-associated trees. Hyphal production rates increased linearly with the percentage of ECM trees and annual production rates were 66% higher in ECM- than AM-dominated plots. Hyphal turnover rates did not differ across the mycorrhizal gradient (plots varying in their abundance of AM vs. ECM trees), suggesting that the greater fungal biomass in ECM-dominated plots relates to greater fungal production rather than slower fungal turnover. Differences in hyphal production across the gradient aligned with distinctly different fungal communities and activities. As ECM trees increased in dominance, fungi inside ingrowth bags produced more extracellular enzymes involved in degrading nitrogen (N)-bearing relative to C-bearing compounds, suggesting greater fungal (and possibly plant) N demand in ECM-dominated soils. Collectively, our results demonstrate that shifts in temperate tree species composition that result in changes in the dominant type of mycorrhizal association may have strong impacts on Dikarya hyphal production, fungal community composition and extracellular enzyme activity, with important consequences for soil C and N cycling.

    • The prevalent design methods and tools being used in Service Design appear to have been informed by the prevalent design traditions within the technology design fields (e.g. HCI and User Experience Design). Such design traditions put users at the centre of the activity of design and aim to cater to their needs, aspirations and desires. But should the user in service design be conceived in the same manner as it has been conceived in technology design fields?To investigate this question, in this paper, first, I discuss why the notion of user is important for the activity of design. I then discuss how the notion of user has informed the attributes of user artefact interaction within the technology design disciplines over the years. Following this I discuss some of the everyday services to identify attributes of user service interaction. By comparing the user service interaction attributes with the user artefact interaction attributes originating from technology design disciplines, I point out that user service interaction attributes are somewhat different than the user artefact interaction attributes within technology design disciplines. I conclude the paper by arguing for the need of re- conceptualization of the user in service design to assist service designers to design innovative, efficient and effective services.

    • The constant shedding and renewal of epithelial cells maintain the protection of epithelial barriers. Interference with the processes of host cell-cycle regulation and barrier integrity permits the bacterial pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae to effectively colonize and invade epithelial cells. Here, we show that a gonococcal infection causes DNA damage in human non-tumor vaginal VK2/E6E7 cells with an increase of 700 DNA strand breaks per cell per hour as detected by an alkaline DNA unwinding assay. Infected cells exhibited elevated levels of DNA double-strand breaks, as indicated by a more than 50% increase in cells expressing DNA damage-response protein 53BP1-positive foci that co-localized with phosphorylated histone H2AX (gamma H2AX). Furthermore, infected cells abolished their expression of the tumor protein p53 and induced an increase in the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors p21 and p27 to 2.6-fold and 4.2-fold of controls, respectively. As shown by live-cell microscopy, flow cytometry assays, and BrdU incorporation assays, gonococcal infection slowed the host cell-cycle progression mainly by impairing progression through the G2 phase. Our findings show new cellular players that are involved in the control of the human cell cycle during gonococcal infection and the potential of bacteria to cause cellular abnormalities.

    • Carbon fibre T650 8-harness satin weave fabric composites with thermosetting polyimide resin designed for high service temperatures are solidified at 340 °C. High thermal stresses develop after cooling down to room temperature, which lead to multiple cracking in bundles of the studied quasi-isotropic composite. The composites are subjected to two thermal cycling ramps and the increase of crack density in each bundle is quantified. Comparison of two ramps with the same lowest temperature shows that the highest temperature in the cycle has a significant effect on thermal fatigue resistance. During thermal aging tests at 288 °C the mechanical properties are degrading with time and the crack density after certain aging time is measured. Aging and fatigue effects are separately analysed showing that part of the cracking in thermal cycling tests is related to material aging during the high temperature part of the cycle. Numerical edge stress analysis and fracture mechanics are used to explain observations. The 3-D finite element edge stress analysis reveals that there is large edge effect that induces a large difference in the damage state between the different layers on the edge. The linear elastic fracture mechanics explains the higher initiated and propagated crack density in the surface layers comparing to the inner layers.

    • It has been suggested that secondary sexual ornamentation signals male ability to resist infections, as only high-quality individuals are able to invest both in high immune defence and elaborate ornament expression. Such ornaments could thus serve as indicators of male quality and could be used by females in choosing mates. Ostriches are sexually dimorphic with regard to coloration of their feathers, bill, neck and legs, and have a promiscuous mating system, with a high degree of reproductive skew, particularly in males. We investigated the relationship between the coloration of the feathers, bill, neck and legs of 15 male ostriches, maintained in a breeding flock, and the cell-mediated (measured using a phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) injection) and humoral components of their immune systems, as well as their heterophil: lymphocyte ratio. We found that male responses to PHA injection and humoral responses to tetanus were predicted by leg coloration, humoral responses to diphtheria were predicted by white feather coloration, and the heterophil: lymphocyte ratio was related to bill coloration. These traits, which relate to male immune capacity, are exposed during male-male interactions and courtship display, so we suggest that these visual cues could provide valuable information on male quality to females (as well as rival males), forming the basis of mate choice in this species.     • Sustainable development has been an important policy goal for the international community for over threedecades. Still, the state of the planet continues to worsen. This conceptual article considers the failure largely aresult of structural obstacles and the so-called weak sustainability discourse, popularized by the Brundtlandreport and manifested today in The 2030 Agenda. The article adopts a strong sustainability perspective forexamining structural distances between actors and the consequences of their acts. We argue that these impederesponsible action and that policy should aim to reduce or eliminate distances in the four dimensions of space,time, functions and relations. The article concludes by suggesting Strongly Sustainable Development Goals,which could help transitioning humanity towards sustainability, lower the anthropogenic environmental impacton the planet, and enable the continuity of diverse life on Earth.

    • Fires and habitat fragmentation are responsible for devastating large ecosystems around the biosphere. The increasing use of remote sensing allows fire patterns to be identified and plays an essential role in preventing fires. In this context, this study aimed to describe the variation in evidence of fire between the edge and the interior of an Atlantic Forest remnant in southeastern Brazil and infer its effects on vegetation. Fire records were acquired between 2010 and 2020 from the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais database and United States Geological Survey satellite images. For each scene, the images were processed and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was calculated. To assess the variation, records were classified and compared according to the year, month, hours, and habitat type (edge and interior). To verify the influence of fires on vegetation, simple linear regressions were performed based on the fire risk due to the NDVI-year-habitat interaction. The data included 748 fire records, with the highest occurrences from April to August, and 51% of the fires occurred between 15h and 20h, indicating periods with more intense solar radiation. The relationship between fire risk and NDVI-year-habitat was significant (F = 30.35; R-2 = 0.26; p < 0.0001), and the edges were more vulnerable to fire risk. This study shows that in an Atlantic Forest remnant, areas with lower vegetation indices, such as edges, are more vulnerable to fire than areas with dense forest vegetation.

    • Today's increasing environmental problems are closely related to how we organise economic activities. This paper departs from the assumption that in order to reach sustainable economic organisation, we must address the dominating Market Discourse (MD), guiding mainstream organising. To understand whether reconceptualisations are sufficient or if changes in underlying ethics are needed, we compare the MD with strong and weak sustainability discourses. The analysis suggests that there is a need for changes in underlying assumptions as well as reconceptualisation of economic organisation that coheres with these assumptions. We also discuss how the related concepts of allocative, governance and throughput efficiency permeates MD, and, as principles for organisation, contribute to the inertia in working towards sustainable economic organisation.

    • This paper contributes to studying relationships between Japanese topography and places featured in early modern landscape prints, so-called ukiyo-e or ‘pictures of the floating world’. The printed inscriptions on these images feature diverse place-names, both man-made and natural formations. However, due to the corpus’s richness and diversity, the precise nature of artistic mediation of the depicted places remains little understood. In this paper, we explored a new analytical approach based on the macroanalysis of images facilitated by Natural Language Processing technologies. This paper presents a small dataset with inscriptions on prints that have been annotated by an art historian for included place-name entities. Our dataset is released for public use. By fine-tuning and applying a Japanese BERT-based Name Entity Recogniser, we provide a use-case of a macroanalysis of a visual dataset that is hosted by the digital database of the Art Research Center at the Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto. Our work studies the relationship between topography and its visual renderings in early modern Japanese ukiyo-e landscape prints, demonstrating how an art historian’s work can be improved with Natural Language Processing toward distant viewing of visual datasets.

    • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) comprises of 17 different goals with 169 targets. Understanding how these multiple targets and goals cut across different sectors and are linked may help to design and appraise common strategies and cross-sectoral policies towards integrated development programmes. This paper aims at developing a method for evaluating the synergies and trade-offs among various goals and targets within SDGs using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. We have analyzed synergy across four SDGs in developing countries, namely energy access (SDG 7), clean water and sanitation access (SDG 6), food security and sustainable agriculture (SDG 2) and poverty alleviation (SDG 1). These specific SDGs have been identified as priority areas in the Rio+20. Various targets related to the four SDGs have been analyzed in this paper with the use of indicators. Developing countries viz. Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka from South Asia and Ghana, Ethiopia and Rwanda from Africa have been chosen for the analysis. We analyze interactions among goals, and examine how the accomplishment of one target under a specific goal might help to attend multiple goals (mutually reinforcing or synergies), or how the accomplishment of targets under one specific goal might impact targets under another goal (imposing conditions or trade-offs). Network analysis technique has been used for exploring the conceptual linkage among these different indicators capturing the various targets associated with SDGs. Advanced Sustainability Analysis (ASA) approach developed under the European framework programme has been used for quantifying the synergy and trade-off among various SDGs. Based on the analysis, some coherent policy measures across energy, water/sanitation, food and poverty alleviation nexus are suggested.

    • Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is a master regulator of melanocyte development and an important oncogene in melanoma. MITF heterodimeric assembly with related basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper transcription factors is highly restricted, and its binding profile to cognate DNA sequences is distinct. Here, we determined the crystal structure of MITF in its apo conformation and in the presence of two related DNA response elements, the E-box and M-box. In addition, we investigated mouse and human Mitf mutations to dissect the functional significance of structural features. Owing to an unusual three-residue shift in the leucine zipper register, the MITF homodimer shows a marked kink in one of the two zipper helices to allow an out-of-register assembly. Removal of this insertion relieves restricted heterodimerization by MITF and permits assembly with the transcription factor MAX. Binding of MITF to the M-box motif is mediated by an unusual nonpolar interaction by Ile212, a residue that is mutated in mice and humans with Waardenburg syndrome. As several related transcription factors have low affinity for the M-box sequence, our analysis unravels how these proteins discriminate between similar target sequences. Our data provide a rational basis for targeting MITF in the treatment of important hereditary diseases and cancer.

    • Maize, genetically modified with the insect toxin genes of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), is widely cultivated, yet its impacts on soil organisms are poorly understood. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form symbiotic associations with plant roots and may be uniquely sensitive to genetic changes within a plant host. In this field study, the effects of nine different lines of Bt maize and their corresponding non-Bt parental isolines were evaluated on AMF colonization and community diversity in plant roots. Plants were harvested 60days after sowing, and data were collected on plant growth and per cent AMF colonization of roots. AMF community composition in roots was assessed using 454 pyrosequencing of the 28S rRNA genes, and spatial variation in mycorrhizal communities within replicated experimental field plots was examined. Growth responses, per cent AMF colonization of roots and AMF community diversity in roots did not differ between Bt and non-Bt maize, but root and shoot biomass and per cent colonization by arbuscules varied by maize cultivar. Plot identity had the most significant effect on plant growth, AMF colonization and AMF community composition in roots, indicating spatial heterogeneity in the field. Mycorrhizal fungal communities in maize roots were autocorrelated within approximately 1m, but at greater distances, AMF community composition of roots differed between plants. Our findings indicate that spatial variation and heterogeneity in the field has a greater effect on the structure of AMF communities than host plant cultivar or modification by Bt toxin genes.

    • Purpose – This aim of this work is to investigate different modelling approaches for air-cooled data centres. The study employs three computational methods, which are based on finite element, finite volume and lattice Boltzmann methods and which are respectively implemented via commercial Multiphysics software, opensource computational fluid dynamics code and graphical processing unit-based code developed by the authors. The results focus on comparison of the three methods, all of which include models for turbulence, when applied to two rows of datacom racks with cool air supplied via an underfloor plenum. Design/methodology/approach – This paper studies thermal airflows in a data centre by applying different numerical simulation techniques that are able to analyse the thermal airflow distribution for a simplified layout of datacom racks in the presence of a computer room air conditioner. Findings – Good quantitative agreement between the three methods is seen in terms of the inlet temperatures to the datacom equipment. The computational methods are contrasted in terms of application to thermal management of data centres. Originality/value – The work demonstrates how the different simulation techniques applied to thermal management of airflow in a data centre can provide valuable design and operational understanding. Basing the analysis on three very different computational approaches is new and would offer an informed understanding of their potential for a class of problems.

  • Association between nutritional profiles of foods underlying Nutri-Score front-of-pack labels and mortality : EPIC cohort study in 10 European countries

    • OBJECTIVE To determine if the Food Standards Agency nutrient profiling system (FSAm-NPS), which grades the nutritional quality of food products and is used to derive the Nutri-Score front-of-packet label to guide consumers towards healthier food choices, is associated with mortality. DESIGN Population based cohort study. SETTING European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort from 23 centres in 10 European countries. PARTICIPANTS 521 324 adults; at recruitment, country specific and validated dietary questionnaires were used to assess their usual dietary intakes. A FSAm-NPS score was calculated for each food item per 100 g content of energy, sugars, saturated fatty acids, sodium, fibre, and protein, and of fruit, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. The FSAm-NPS dietary index was calculated for each participant as an energy weighted mean of the FSAm-NPS score of all foods consumed. The higher the score the lower the overall nutritional quality of the diet. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Associations between the FSAm-NPS dietary index score and mortality, assessed using multivariable adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS After exclusions, 501 594 adults (median follow-up 17.2 years, 8 162 730 person years) were included in the analyses. Those with a higher FSAm-NPS dietary index score (highest versus lowest fifth) showed an increased risk of all cause mortality (n=53 112 events from non-external causes; hazard ratio 1.07, 95% confidence interval 1.03 to 1.10, P(0.001 for trend) and mortality from cancer (1.08, 1.03 to 1.13, P(0.001 for trend) and diseases of the circulatory (1.04, 0.98 to 1.11, P=0.06 for trend), respiratory (1.39, 1.22 to 1.59, P(0.001), and digestive (1.22, 1.02 to 1.45, P=0.03 for trend) systems. The age standardised absolute rates for all cause mortality per 10 000 persons over 10 years were 760 (men=1237; women=563) for those in the highest fifth of the FSAm-NPS dietary index score and 661 (men=1008; women=518) for those in the lowest fifth. CONCLUSIONS In this large multinational European cohort, consuming foods with a higher FSAm-NPS score (lower nutritional quality) was associated with a higher mortality for all causes and for cancer and diseases of the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems, supporting the relevance of FSAm-NPS to characterise healthier food choices in the context of public health policies (eg, the Nutri-Score) for European populations. This is important considering ongoing discussions about the potential implementation of a unique nutrition labelling system at the European Union level.

    • Objectives: To determine how components of accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA), and fitness are associated with insulin sensitivity in adults with metabolic syndrome. Design: Cross-sectional. Methods: Target population was middle-aged (40–65 years) sedentary adults with metabolic syndrome. SB, breaks in SB, standing, and PA were measured for four weeks with hip-worn accelerometers. VO2max (ml/min/kg) was measured with maximal cycle ergometry. Insulin sensitivity was determined by hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp (M-value) and fasting blood sampling (HOMA-IR, insulin). Multivariable regression was used for analyses. Results: Sixty-four participants (37 women; 58.3 [SD 6.8] years) were included. Participants spent 10.0 (1.0) h sedentary, 1.8 (0.6) h standing, and 2.7 (0.6) h in PA and took 5149 (1825) steps and 29 (8) breaks daily. In sex-, age- and accelerometer wear time-adjusted model SB, standing, steps and VO2max were associated with M-value (β = −0.384; β = 0.400; β = 0.350; β = 0.609, respectively), HOMA-IR (β = 0.420; β = −0.548; β = −0.252; β = −0.449), and insulin (β = 0.433; β = −0.541; β = −0.252; β = −0.453); all p-values < 0.05. Breaks associated only with M-value (β = 0.277). When further adjusted for body fat %, only standing remained significantly associated with HOMA-IR (β = −0.381) and insulin (β = −0.366); significance was maintained even when further adjusted for SB, PA and fitness. Light and moderate-to-vigorous PA were not associated with insulin sensitivity. Conclusions: Standing is associated with insulin sensitivity markers. The association with HOMA-IR and insulin is independent of adiposity, PA, SB and fitness. Further studies are warranted, but these findings encourage replacing sitting with standing for potential improvements in insulin sensitivity in adults at increased type 2 diabetes risk. © 2021 The Authors.

    • This book is a philosophical journey into what is here described as a dissociative economy, whereby the battle-lines between capital and labour, are currently being drawn in and through our very identities themselves. Whilst predominantly theoretical, and owing much to Critical theory and the teachings of Jacques Lacan, the book nevertheless grapples with three diverse empirical cases from our evermore prevailing and broadly defined knowledge economy. In these empirical glimpses the industries of investment banking, information technology and management consulting are duly represented through interviews derived from Lehman Brothers, Google and a multinational consulting firm. The empirical accounts are used to render visible the theoretical contributions to the fields of subjectivity, ideology, power, resistance and virtuality. By looking at a rather timely and specific range of work-life identities, yet at the same time elaborating these accounts in light of the fundamental question around identity itself, which has tickled the human intellect since time immemorial. My hope is to enter into a timeless dialogue and yet at the same time very much speak into our present.

  • Operationalizing ambiguity in sustainability science : embracing the elephant in the room

    • Ambiguity is often recognized as an intrinsic aspect of addressing complex sustainability challenges. Nevertheless, in the practice of transdisciplinary sustainability research, ambiguity is often an ‘elephant in the room’ to be either side-stepped or reduced rather than explicitly mobilized in pursuit of solutions. These responses threaten the salience and legitimacy of sustainability science by masking the pluralism of real-world sustainability challenges and how research renders certain frames visible and invisible. Critical systems thinking (CST) emerged from the efforts of operational researchers to address theoretical and practical aspects of ambiguity. By adapting key concepts, frameworks, and lessons from CST literature and case studies, this paper aims to establish (1) an expansive conceptualization of ambiguity and (2) recommendations for operationalizing ambiguity as a valuable means of addressing sustainability challenges. We conceptualize ambiguity as an emergent feature of the simultaneous and interacting boundary processes associated with being, knowing, and intervening in complex systems, and propose Reflexive Boundary Critique (RBC) as a novel framework to help navigate these boundary processes. Our characterization of ambiguity acknowledges the boundary of a researcher’s subjective orientation and its influence on how ambiguity is exposed and mediated in research (being), characterizes knowledge as produced through the process of making boundary judgments, generating a partial, contextual, and provisional frame (knowing), and situates a researcher as part of the complexity they seek to understand, rendering any boundary process as a form of intervention that reinforces or marginalizes certain frames and, in turn, influences action (intervening). Our recommendations for sustainability scientists to operationalize ambiguity include (1) nurturing the reflexive capacities of transdisciplinary researchers to navigate persistent ambiguity (e.g., using our proposed framework of RBC), and (2) grappling with the potential for and consequences of theoretical incommensurability and discordant pluralism. Our findings can help sustainability scientists give shape to and embrace ambiguity as a fundamental part of rigorous sustainability science.

    • Objective: The impact of growth hormone (GH) replacement on plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) in association with cardiac morphology and function in adults with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) was evaluated. Subjects and Methods: Fifty nine adult patients with GHD (29 men, age 19-59 years) received a starting dose of 0.1-0.2 mg/day recombinant GH, which was subsequently adjusted to the 50th percentile of normal serum insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) over a 6 month period. Plasma BNP and IGF-I levels before, 3 and 6 months after treatment were determined, as were the echocardiographic data, such as ejection fraction (EF), left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), interventricular septal thickness (IVST), posterior wall thickness (PWT), left ventricular mass (LVM), E/A wave and deceleration time (DT). Results: Mean plasma BNP levels (53.1 +/- 8 pg/ml) and echocardiographic parameters were within the normal range at baseline, although men had higher LVM, IVST, PWT, LVEDV and LVEDD, respectively. A significant decrease in plasma BNP was observed after 6 months (27 +/- 5.6 pg/ml, P < 0.05). No significant changes in echocardiographic parameters were observed except for a mild tendency to increase in LVM, and a borderline decrease in DT (181 +/- 8.1 vs. 155 +/- 9 ms, P < 0.01). Conclusions: Six months GH replacement therapy induced a significant decrease in plasma BNP levels despite the majority of patients having plasma BNP within the normal range at baseline. A borderline decrease in diastolic deceleration time was observed, the clinical significance of which is unclear.

    • Dynamic testing and modeling (in contrast to Steady State line of action) of solar collectors is to prefer in most climates, except for the most extreme locations with clear skies every day. A very important part of dynamic testing and modeling is not only the thermal capacitance correction, but also the split of the solar radiation absorption modeling, into beam and diffuse and the modeling of the collectors' incidence angle dependency for both beam and diffuse radiation. These optical features are in most situations more important than the accuracy of the dynamic and thermal loss part of the model. This can be seen from the statistical analyze when evaluating test data. The t-ratios i.e. the parameter values divided by their standard deviations, are generally much higher (often 10 times higher) for the optical parameters than for the thermal loss ones. There are also important details concerning solar radiation measurements for beam and diffuse including alignment of sensors and test object, that are often not considered, which will be discussed and lessons learned will be given. A misalignment of just a few degrees of the collector test stand or the solar sensors will immediately show up in a dynamic test evaluation, especially when analyzing the incidence angle modifier behavior and thermal capacitance of a collector. To achieve good results in dynamic testing it is essential to understand the basic concepts of the method and to use this understanding when designing a test rig and collecting data during a test for later analyze. It is very desirable to use a continuous parameter feedback during the test, so that the test conditions can be changed hour by hour to derive more accurate results and shorten the testing time. Such advice will be discussed in the paper. Some of these findings has not yet reached the EN12975 standard level, and suggestions for revisions and improvements will be presented that have general application also for non standardized testing, for example research and development testing.

    • One of the most important measures of offspring performance is growth rate, which is often traded off against another important survival trait, immune function. A particular feature of ostrich chicks maintained in farmed environments is that cohorts of chicks vary widely in size. As parents can have a profound effect on the phenotype and fitness of their offspring, we investigated whether chick growth and immune defence were related to variation in levels of immune defence in their genetic parents. As secondary sexual traits of sires could serve as indicators of male quality, and be used in female mating decisions, we also investigated whether chick growth rate and immune defence were related to male plumage and integumentary colouration. We found that offspring growth rates and humoral responses were related to the humoral responses of their parents, suggesting that at least some components of humoral immune capacity are heritable. The white colour of male ostrich feathers was correlated to the humoral response and growth rate of their offspring, suggesting that this visual cue involved in the male courtship display could serve as an important signal to females of male quality, thereby forming the basis of mate choice in this species.

    • Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among Eastern European students enrolled in master’s programmes in Denmark, this article sheds light on the dominant geographical imaginaries, which have informed their decision to pursue an education abroad. Difficulties in aligning their life with a desired life trajectory in their home countries make the students long for a new beginning in a foreign land. They imagine Scandinavia as a place of abundant opportunities – a normal place, which will allow them to unite their inner desires with their social realities. These imaginaries reflect an overarching narrative of ‘the West’ as a place that offers a superior mode of existence.

    • The ascent of social media continues to have profound and far-reaching impacts on societies and institutions, by way of becoming increasingly intertwined with social movements across the world. Moreover, there is an increasing awareness of how people are being lured into consuming certain information through meme-like virality, or gamelike characteristics, paralleling an unprecedented contagion of conspiracy theories. Nevertheless, strikingly few studies explicitly connect the dots on how our current post-pandemic onslaught of online conspiracist fervour may have more to do with the medium than with the actual content that comes through. This in spite of the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, that in large part was enmeshed in this elaborate misinformation complex called Q-anon, wherein a bizarre assemblage of disinformation loosely anchored in an underlying white supremacist logic, could consolidate a global and cross-cultural movement through the power of the meme. In this chapter, we explore how this Q-anon movement that played a significant role in the attack of January 6th did not just pull off this one extraordinary assault on US democracy and fall apart in the flurry of counter-conspiratorial evidence revealed in its wake. More worryingly, it has proved resilient enough to spread globally and across cultural boundaries to countries as diverse as Sweden and Japan. Exploring this phenomenon, we will be web-scraping relevant social media in Japan and Sweden. Finally, by employing a Levinasian perspective on ethics, we consider the appropriate lessons of what in this view may be seen as a reification of otherness to accentuate sameness, as opposed to appreciating alterity as constitutive of subjectification and the ethics associated therewith.

    • By the emerging digital sound broadcasting (DAB) the network operators have to solve a new type of planning problems. In contrast with traditional (FM) broadcasting, where the main issue of network planning is the frequency assignment, designers of Single Frequency Networks can manipulate mainly with the transmitters' location, power and antenna height. The planning process includes optimization problems of very high complexity. This paper investigates the applicability of stochastic optimization methods, particularly of Simulated Annealing, to the SFN design. In order to create a finite discrete problem, the area to be covered is described by a set of selected testpoints considering the population, roads, etc. Our concept for constructing objective functions allows for including economic considerations into the optimization process. This method ensures that - beside satisfying the coverage constraints - the algorithm searches for solutions that minimize installation/provisioning costs. A few numerical examples are presented in the paper demonstrating that simulated annealing can result in high quality solutions for SFN in feasible time. With integrating cost factors into the objective function, cost-minimized solutions can also be achieved. Some interesting phenomena concerning the usage of stochastic optimization are also concluded in the paper.

    • Skin cancer is the most common malignancy in humans. Clonal chromosome abnormalities have been reported in approximately 100 basal cell epitheliomas (BCC). In contrast to BCC, which has no recognized precursor lesion, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin is known to develop through histologic stages, the most important of which are actinic keratosis (squamous cell dysplasia) and carcinoma in situ (severe dysplasia). A wide range of clinically and pathologically different benign and malignant melanocytic tumors are recognized. Appendageal tumors are subdivided into more than 30 benign and malignant subtypes showing apocrine and eccrine differentiation or follicular and sebaceous differentiation. Merkel cell carcinomas have near-diploid karyotypes, often showing rearrangements of chromosome 1. Dermal cylindromas may show similar genetic features to adenoid cystic carcinomas with the occurrence of a t (6; 9) (q22-23; p23-24) leading to a MYB-NFIB fusion gene.

    • High-speed laser diagnostics was utilized for single-cycle resolved studies of the formaldehyde distribution in the combustion chamber of an HCCI engine. A multi-YAG laser system consisting of four individual Q-switched, flash lamp-pumped Nd:YAG lasers has previously been developed in order to obtain laser pulses at 355 nm suitable for performing LIF measurements of the formaldehyde molecule. Bursts of up to eight pulses with very short time separation can be produced, allowing capturing of LIF image series with high temporal resolution. The system was used together with a high-speed framing camera employing eight intensified CCD modules, with a frame-rate matching the laser pulse repetition rate. The diagnostic system was used to study the combustion in a truck-size HCCI engine, running at 1200 rpm using n-heptane as fuel. By using laser pulses with time separations as short as 70 μs, cycle-resolved image sequences of the formaldehyde distribution were obtained. Thus, with this technique it is possible to follow the formaldehyde formation and consumption processes within a single cycle. The combustion evolution was studied in terms of the rate and spatial structure of formaldehyde formation and consumption for different engine operating conditions, e.g. different stoichiometries. Also, the impact on the rate of heat-release was investigated.

However, only few studies have been performed to evaluate this hypothesis. The present study was performed to investigate the effects of NPWT on wound contraction and wound edge tissue deformation. METHODS: Six pigs underwent median sternotomy followed by magnetic resonance imaging in the transverse plane through the thorax and sternotomy wound during NPWT at 0, -75, -125 and -175 mmHg. The lateral width of the wound and anterior-posterior thickness of the wound edge was measured in the images. RESULTS: The sternotomy wound decreased in size following NPWT. The lateral width of the wound, at the level of the sternum bone, decreased from 39 ± 7 mm to 30 ± 6 mm at -125 mmHg (p = 0.0027). The greatest decrease in wound width occurred when switching from 0 to -75 mmHg. The level of negative pressure did not affect wound contraction (sternum bone: 32 ± 6 mm at -75 mmHg and 29 ± 6 mm at -175 mmHg, p = 0.0897). The decrease in lateral wound width during NPWT was greater in subcutaneous tissue (14 ± 2 mm) than in sternum bone (9 ± 2 mm), resulting in a ratio of 1.7 ± 0.3 (p = 0.0423), suggesting macro-deformation of the tissue. The anterior-posterior thicknesses of the soft tissue, at 0.5 and 2.5 cm laterally from the wound edge, were not affected by negative pressure. CONCLUSIONS: NPWT contracts the wound and causes macro-deformation of the wound edge tissue. This shearing force in the tissue and at the wound-foam interface may be one of the mechanisms by which negative pressure delivery promotes granulation tissue formation and wound healing.
