  • Measurement of the gluon fragmentation function and a comparison of the scaling violation in gluon and quark jets
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 13:4, s. 573-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons are measured in various three-jet topologies in Z decays from the full data set collected with the DELPHI detector at the Z resonance between 1992 and 995. The results at different values of transverse momentum-like scales are compared. A parameterization of the quark and gluon fragmentation functions at a fixed reference scale is given. The quark and gluon fragmentation functions show the predicted pattern of scaling violations. The scaling violation for quark jets as a function of a transverse momentum-like scale is in a good agreement with that observed in lower energy e+e- annihilation experiments. For gluon jets it appears to be significantly stronger. The scale dependences of the gluon and quark fragmentation functions agree with the prediction of the DGLAP evolution equations from which the colour factor ratio CA/CF is measured to be: CA/CF = 2.26 ± 0.09stat. ± 0.06sys. ± 0.12clus.,scale..

  • Study of dimuon production in photon-photon collisions and measurement of QED photon structure functions at LEP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 15-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muon pair production in the process e+e- → e+e- μ+μ- is studied using the data taken at LEP1 (√s ≃ mz) with the DELPHI detector during the years 1992-1995. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 138.5 pb-1. The QED predictions have been tested over the whole Q2 range accessible at LEP1 (from several GeV2/c4 to several hundred GeV2/c4) by comparing experimental distributions with distributions resulting from Monte Carlo simulations using various generators. Selected events are used to extract the leptonic photon structure function Fγ 2. Azimuthal correlations are used to obtain information on additional structure functions, Fγ A and Fγ B, which originate from interference terms of the scattering amplitudes. The measured ratios Fγ A/Fγ 2 and FγB/Fγ 2 are significantly different from zero and consistent with QED predictions.

  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 29-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data taken by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 212 pb-1 have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of the electrons, muons, and taus in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay topologies searched for were the direct decay (ℓ̃ → ℓx̃), producing acoplanar lepton pairs plus missing energy, and the cascade decay (ℓ → ℓx̃0 2 → ℓγx̃0 1), producing acoplanar lepton and photon pairs plus missing energy. The observed number of events is in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The 95% CL excluded mass limits for selectrons, smuons and staus are mẽ ≤ 87 GeV/c2, mμ̃ ≤ 80 GeV/c2 and mτ̃ 75 GeV/c2, respectively, for values of μ=-200 GeV/c2 and tanβ=1.5.

  • Reduced functional performance in the lower extremity predicted radiographic knee osteoarthritis five years later
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - London : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 0003-4967 .- 1468-2060. ; 63:4, s. 402-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Reduced quadriceps strength is an early finding in subjects with knee osteoarthritis, but it is not clear whether it is a cause or a consequence of knee osteoarthritis. Objective: To determine whether reduced functional performance in the lower extremity predicts the incidence or progression of radiographic knee osteoarthritis.Design: Prospective, epidemiological, population based cohort study.Patients: 148 subjects (62 women), aged 35–54 (mean 44.8), with chronic knee pain from a population based cohort.Measurements: Predictors analysed were age, sex, body mass index, baseline knee pain, and three tests of lower extremity functional performance: maximum number of one-leg rises from sitting, time spent walking 300 m, and timed standing on one leg. Weightbearing tibiofemoral knee radiographs were obtained at baseline and after 5 years (median 5.1, range 4.2–6.1), and classified according to Kellgren and Lawrence as no osteoarthritis (Kellgren and Lawrence = 0, n = 94) or prevalent osteoarthritis (Kellgren and Lawrence ⩾1, n = 54).Results: Fewer one-leg rises (median 17 v 25) predicted incident radiographic osteoarthritis five years later (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.1 to 6.0). The association remained significant after controlling for age, sex, body mass index, and pain. No significant predictor of radiographic progression in the group with prevalent osteoarthritis was found. Conclusion: Reduced functional performance in the lower extremity predicted development of radiographic knee osteoarthritis 5 years later among people aged 35–55 with chronic knee pain and normal radiographs at baseline. These findings suggest that a test of one-leg rises may be useful, and interventions aimed at improving functional performance may be protective against development of knee osteoarthritis.

  • Physicians perceptions of possibilities and obstacles prior to implementing a computerised drug prescribing support system
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International journal of health care quality assurance incorporating leadership in helath services. - : Emerald. - 1366-0756 .- 2051-3135. ; 17:4, s. 173-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seeks to identify physicians' perceptions of possibilities and obstacles prior to implementing a computerised drug prescribing support system. Details a descriptive, qualitative study, with semi-structured individual interviews of 21 physicians in the Accident and Emergency Department of South Stockholm General Hospital. Identifies four descriptive categories for possibilities and obstacles. Concludes that gaining access to patient drug history enables physicians to carry out work in a professional way – a need the computerised prescription support system was not developed for and thus cannot fulfil. Alerts and producer-independent drug information are valuable in reducing workload. However, technical prerequisites form the base for a successful implementation. Time must be given to adapt to new ways of working.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rheumatology. - Toronto : Journal of Rheumatology Publishing Co. Ltd.. - 0315-162X .- 1499-2752. ; 28:6, s. 1369-1377
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of chronic regional and widespread musculoskeletal pain in a sample of the general adult population and study the association to age, sex, socioeconomic class, immigration, and housing area.METHODS: A cross sectional survey with a postal questionnaire to 3928 inhabitants on the west coast of Sweden.RESULTS: The age and sex adjusted prevalence of chronic regional pain (CRP) was 23.9% and chronic widespread pain (CWP) 11.4% among 2425 subjects who responded to the complete questionnaire. Odds ratio (OR) for CWP showed a systematic increasing gradient with age and was highest in the age group 59-74 yrs (OR 6.36, 95% CI 3.85-10.50) vs age group 20-34 yrs. CWP was also associated with female sex (OR 1.91, 95% CI 1.41-2.61), being an immigrant (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.22-2.77), living in a socially compromised housing area (OR 3.05, 95% CI 1.48-6.27), and being an assistant nonmanual lower level employee (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.09-3.38) or manual worker (OR 2.72, 95% CI 1.65-4.49) vs being an intermediate/higher nonmanual employee. OR for CRP showed a systematic increasing gradient with age and was highest in the age group 59-74 yrs (OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.62-3.05) vs age group 20-34 yrs. CRP was also associated with being a manual worker (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.19-2.23) vs being an intermediate/higher nonmanual employee.CONCLUSION: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is common in the general population. Sociodemographic variables were overall more frequently and strongly associated with CWP than with CRP, which indicates different pathophysiology in the development or preservation of pain in the 2 groups.

  • Influence of packaging material and storage condition on the sensory quality of broccoli
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Food Quality and Preference. - 0950-3293 .- 1873-6343. ; 15:4, s. 301-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sensory quality of broccoli stored in modified atmosphere packages was studied. Oriented polypropylene (OPP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were used as packaging materials. The LDPE contained an ethylene-absorbing sachet. The samples were stored for I week, either at a constant temperature of 10 degreesC or for 3 days at 4 degreesC, followed by 4 days at 10 degreesC. The atmospheres that were developed inside the different packaging materials during storage differed significantly. After storage, the broccoli was evaluated both raw and cooked using a triangle test and a quantitative descriptive analysis. The triangle test showed significant differences in the smell of broccoli stored in different packaging materials after cooking. No differences were detected in the raw broccoli. The quantitative descriptive analysis showed significant differences in the fresh smell and flavour, the chewing resistance, and the crispness, between samples after cooking. Overall, including all the sensory properties studied, broccoli packaged in LDPE (5% O-2 7% CO2) that contained an ethylene absorber was perceived to be the sample most similar to fresh broccoli. There were no differences in weight loss between broccoli stored in the different packaging materials.

  • The effect of packaging material on the sensory properties of broccoli
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the international conference Postharvest Unlimited. - 9066059060 ; , s. 91-95
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three different commercially available polymeric films were studied to determine their effect on the sensory properties of fresh broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica cv. 'Marathon'). The polymer materials investigated were oriented polypropylene (OPP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and one low density polyethylene (LDPE) which contained an ethylene absorber. The fresh broccoli was packaged and stored for one week at 10degreesC or 3 days at 4degreesC followed by 4 days at 10degreesC. The oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations inside the packages were monitored during storage. After storage the broccoli was evaluated according to sensory analyses, i.e. triangle test and quantitative descriptive analysis, by an analytical panel. The panel judged the broccoli according to smell, taste, texture and appearance. The triangle test showed significant differences between the smell of the broccoli samples, stored in the different packaging materials, when cooked. However, no differences between the raw broccoli, stored in the different packaging materials could be detected. The quantitative descriptive analysis showed that the following attributes; fresh smell and taste, chewing resistance, and crispness, differed significantly between the packaged broccoli when cooked. The appearance was shown to be the sensory property of broccoli most affected by the storage conditions, i.e. packaging material used and storage temperature. The results indicated the importance of the packaging material for maintaining the broccoli quality. However, one packaging material that was able to maintain all the studied sensory properties could not be identified.

  • High-resolution XRD evaluation of thick 4H-SiC epitaxial layers
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum, Vols. 353-356. ; , s. 291-294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 4H-SiC commercial wafers and sublimation grown epitaxial layers with a thickness of 100 mum have been studied concerning crystalline structure. The substrate wafers and the epitaxial layers have been separately investigated by high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD) and synchrotron white beam x-ray topography (SWBXT). The results show that the structural quality was improved in the epitaxial layers in the < 11 (2) over bar0 > and <(1) over bar 100 > directions, concerning domain distribution, lattice plane misorientation, mosaicity, and strain? compared with the substrates. Misoriented domains have merged together to form larger domains while the tilt between the domains was reduced, which resulted in non-splitting in diffraction curves. It is also clear that if the misorientation in the substrate gets too large, we can only see a slight decrease in the misorientation in the layer. At some positions on the substrates there were block structure (mosaicity). omega -rocking curves from epilayers at the same position showed smaller full width at half-maximum (FWHM) values and more uniform and narrow peaks. Curvature was almost the same in grown epilayers compared with the substrates. The shape of the grown epitaxial layers nas concave similarly to the substrates.

  • Prevalence of fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 0281-3432 .- 1502-7724. ; 18:3, s. 149-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence of fibromyalgia and chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain in a general population using the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology from 1990.DESIGN: Structured interview and clinical examination, including tender-point count and pain threshold measured with a dolorimeter, of subjects with suspected chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain.SETTING: The general population in south-west Sweden 1995-1996.SUBJECTS: 303 individuals with suspected chronic widespread pain were identified in a previously defined cohort containing 2425 men and women aged 20-74 years. 202 individuals were invited and 147 agreed to participate.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Tenderpoint count, pain threshold and prevalence of chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia.RESULTS: The prevalence of fibromyalgia was estimated to 1.3% (95% CI 0.8-1.7; n = 2425) and that of all chronic widespread pain to 4.2% (95% CI 3.4-5.0; n = 2425). The mean pain threshold measured with a dolorimeter was lower in subjects with chronic widespread pain (p < 0.01) and correlated with the number of tender points (r = -0.59, p < 0.01) but could not be used to distinguish the subjects with fibromyalgia.CONCLUSION: Compared to other studies, fibromyalgia and chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain seemed to be relatively rare conditions in the south-west of Sweden.

  • Sympathetic dysfunction in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rheumatology. - 0315-162X. ; 28:2, s. 296-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To investigate autonomic nervous system function in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) and relate the findings to clinical variables. METHODS: Autonomic nervous system function was determined in 30 patients with primary SS using the finger skin blood flow test [vasoconstrictory (VAC) index], deep-breathing test [expiration/inspiration (E/I) ratio], and the tilt table (orthostatic) test [acceleration index (AI), brake index (BI), and orthostatic blood pressure]. The results were compared with age matched control materials (finger skin blood flow test, n = 80, and deep-breathing and tilt table tests, n = 56). RESULTS: The VAC index was found to be significantly increased and the E/I ratio significantly decreased in patients compared to controls, indicating both a sympathetic and a parasympathetic dysfunction. Further, the patients, especially the anti-SSA and anti-SSB antibody seropositives, were found to have an abnormal blood pressure reaction to tilt compared to controls. No correlations were found between autonomic nerve function variables measured and the clinical ophthalmologic or the oral tests, performed at the time of diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Patients with primary SS show signs of both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction. Further, immunological mechanisms seem to influence blood pressure in patients with primary SS.

  • The plant sesquiterpene germacrene D specifically activates a major type of antennal receptor neuron of the tobacco budworm moth Heliothis virescens
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Chemical Senses. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0379-864X .- 1464-3553. ; 25:2, s. 141-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plants release hundreds of volatiles that are important in interactions with insects or other organisms. However, knowledge is scarce as to which of the compounds are detected by the organism's olfactory receptor neurons. In the present study, single receptor neurons on the antennae of the tobacco budworm moth, Heliothis virescens, were screened far their sensitivities to naturally produced plant volatiles by the use of gas chromatography linked to electrophysiological recordings from single cells (GC-SCR). Plant volatiles, collected by aeration of host and non-host plants, were tested on each receptor neuron via parallel GC-columns. Thus, simultaneous recordings of the gas chromatogram and the neuron responses to each component were obtained. One type of receptor neuron, appearing in 80% of all experiments, responded with high sensitivity and selectivity to one particular component, present in host as well as non-host mixtures. The component, identified as a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon by linked gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, was isolated from a sesquiterpene fraction of cubebe oil and identified by NMR as germacrene D. The purified compound was then re-tested via gas chromatography on the same receptor neuron type, verifying the identification. A weaker response to another sesquiterpene hydrocarbon was also recorded.

  • Uncoupling protein-1: involvement in a novel pathway for beta-adrenergic, cAMP-mediated intestinal relaxation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: American journal of physiology. Gastrointestinal and liver physiology. - : American Physiological Society. - 0193-1857 .- 1522-1547. ; 283:5, s. G1107-G1116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pathway for adrenergic relaxation of smooth muscle is not fully understood. As mitochondrial uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) expression has been reported in cells within the longitudinal smooth muscle layer of organs exhibiting peristalsis, we examined whether the absence of UCP1 affects adrenergic responsiveness. Intestinal (ileal) segments were obtained from UCP1-ablated mice and from wild-type mice (C57Bl/6, 129/SvPas, and outbred NMRI). In UCP1-containing mice, isoprenaline totally inhibited contractions induced by electrical field stimulation, but in intestine from UCP1-ablated mice, a significant residual contraction remained even at a high isoprenaline concentration; the segments were threefold less sensitive to isoprenaline. Also, when contraction was induced by carbachol, there was a residual isoprenaline-insensitive contraction. Similar results were obtained with the β3-selective agonist CL-316,243 and with the adenylyl cyclase stimulator forskolin. Thus the UCP1 reported to be expressed in the longitudinal muscle layer of the mouse intestine is apparently functional, and UCP1, presumably through uncoupling, may be involved in a novel pathway leading from increased cAMP levels to relaxation in organs exhibiting peristalsis.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social Psychiatry. - : Sage Publications. - 0020-7640 .- 1741-2854. ; 48:3, s. 200-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Detecting cases with psychiatric disorders in the general population is costly and it is not clear which is the method of choice for community surveys in low-income countries. Aim: To compare the performance of a standardized diagnostic layman interview instrument-the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 2.1) versus the Key Informant method in identifying cases with schizophrenia and major affective disorders in a community survey. Method: Both screening methods were tested against an expert interview the Schedule for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN 2.1) in a rural district in Ethiopia with 25,632 inhabitants. Result: CIDI identified 524 and key informants 192 individuals as probable cases who were invited for a further SCAN interview. Seventy-two individuals were identified by both methods. Of those identified as probable cases by either method, a total of 481 volunteered the SCAN interviews. The Key Informant method alone detected more cases of schizophrenia, 59 vs. 29 for CIDI, whereas CIDI alone detected more cases of affective disorders, 45 vs. 30. Key informants performed better in detecting chronic cases. Conclusion: For community surveys, which aim at identifying cases with major mental disorders in low-income countries like Ethiopia, the combined use of both CIDI and the Key Informant method is recommended.

  • Seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori in primary Sjogren's syndrome
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology. - 1593-098X. ; 19:6, s. 633-638
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To study the seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (SS), fulfilling the 1993 European classification criteria compared with three different control groups. METHODS: Serological tests investigating the presence of antibodies against H. pylori were performed by Enzyme Immuno Assay (EIA) and confirmed by immunoblot (IB). The samples were tested for antibodies against cytotoxin-associated-protein A (CagA). The three control groups included were: one simultaneously collected age-matched group of orthopaedic outpatients without rheumatological disease, a random primary care patient sample from the same geographic region and a group of age-matched blood donors. RESULTS: 45% of the SS patients (n = 164) were EIA-positive for H. pylori and 30% were positive in the confirming IB assay. 23% had antibodies to the CagA protein. We found a clear and statistically significant increase in seroprevalence with increasing age. These estimates were lower compared to the control group of orthopaedic patients but similar to those in the other two control groups, thus showing the importance of multiple control groups in case control studies. In the group of SS patients there were no significant associations between a positive EIA, IB or CagA for H. pylori and the presence of abnormal serum levels of autoantibodies (ANA, anti-SSA, anti-SSB, rheumatoid factor (RF)) or an abnormal lip biopsy. CONCLUSION: Swedish patients with primary SS do not have higher H. pylori seroprevalence rates than controls. Neither was H. pylori seropositivity associated with the presence of immunological markers of SS such as circulating autoantibodies or a lip biopsy with abnormal focus score.

  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7732 .- 0300-9742. ; 33:2, s. 65-72

    • Extra-articular RA (ExRA) includes a wide variety of disease manifestations. Although rheumatologists in general are aware that such events are clinically important, the heterogeneity of available data, including discrepancies in case definitions, has complicated constructive discussions on this aspect of the RA disease phenotype. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of co-morbidity in patients with RA. ExRA manifestations are not uncommon, explain excess mortality in RA and are predicted by smoking and autoantibodies. Further studies of the mechanisms underlying these associations are likely to be important in improving our understanding of the systemic nature of RA. This article discusses the methodological issues involved in the study of ExRA manifestations, presents suggested criteria that have been used in clinical studies, and reviews important surveys of the epidemiology of extra-articular RA.

  • Increased endothelial expression of HLA-DQ and interleukin 1alpha in extra-articular rheumatoid arthritis. Results from immunohistochemical studies of skeletal muscle
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Rheumatology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1462-0332. ; 40:12, s. 1346-1354
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To investigate markers of endothelial activation in muscle biopsies from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with and without extra-articular manifestations (ExRA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nine consecutive ExRA patients were compared with nine RA controls without ExRA, matched for age, sex and duration of RA. Muscle biopsies were obtained from the lateral vastus or anterior tibial muscle. Macrophage and lymphocyte CD markers, HLA molecules, cytokines and adhesion molecules were investigated using immunohistochemistry, and stainings were evaluated using computer image analysis and conventional microscopy. Serum concentrations of soluble adhesion molecules, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and rheumatoid factor (RF) were determined using immunoassays. RESULTS: The number of HLA-DQ-positive capillaries (P=0.039) and the expression of interleukin 1alpha (IL-1alpha) in endothelial cells (mean pairwise difference 0.26%; 95% confidence interval 0-0.52) were increased in ExRA patients compared with non-ExRA controls. There were no signs of inflammatory cell infiltrates or fibre degeneration. Serum levels of TNF-alpha, the soluble form of intercellular adhesion molecule 1, the soluble form of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 and IgM RF were increased in the ExRA group. CONCLUSION: The increased expression of HLA-DQ and IL-1alpha may indicate systemic endothelial activation in extra-articular RA, which could be of importance for cardiovascular comorbidity and mortality in such patients.

Fifty patients with rheumatoid arthritis-39 females and 11 males, age 30-45 years and belonging to functional class I-III according to Steinbrocker er al (1949)-were recuited from the register at a hospital clinic and from a private outpatient clinic. The participants completed a questionnaire concerning education, occupation, pain, morning stiffness, currentleisure activities and those pursued before the onset of the disease, and including the Quality of Life Scale (QoLS). The patients had given up two-thirds of their leisure activites since the onset of the disease. This decrease wa observed for both aexes. It correlated positivly with present disease activity, measures as pain on a visual analogue scale and as morning stiffness, and negativly with the present QoLS.
