  • Lower disease activity and disability in Swedish patients with rheumatoid arthritis in 1995 compared with 1978
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology. - 1502-7732. ; 28, s. 160-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in disease activity, disability, and medical treatment in consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis seen at the outpatient clinics in Malmö, in 1978 (n=148) and 1995 (n=164). The groups were similar with regard to age, gender, disease duration, and the proportion having had hip or knee replacement surgery. The patients in 1995 had lower values for CRP (p<0.001), Ritchie Articular Index (mean values: 5.5 vs. 9.9, p<0.001), and Steinbrocker functional class index (mean values: 1.96 vs. 2.16, p<0.001) than the 1978 group. The 1995 patient group was also more extensively treated with DMARD:s (68 vs. 51%, p<0.01) and glucocorticosteroids (23 vs. 12%, p<0.02) and had historically been treated with almost twice as many DMARD:s (2.7 vs. 1.5, p<0.001). Similar findings regarding disease activity and disability were made when restricting the analysis to subgroups of patients that were seropositive or had a shorter disease duration (<5 yrs). The lower disease severity in the 1995 group may be secondary to a more active medical treatment, although other possibilities such as differences in selection and secular changes in disease severity unrelated to medication cannot be excluded.

  • The male partner involved in legal abortion
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Human Reproduction. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0268-1161 .- 1460-2350. ; 14:10, s. 2669-2675
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study comprises 75 men who have been involved in legal abortion. The men answered a questionnaire concerning living conditions and attitudes about pregnancy and abortion. Most men were found to be in stable relationships with good finances. More than half clearly stated that they wanted the woman to have an abortion while 20 stressed that they submitted themselves to their partner's decision. Only one man wanted the woman to complete the pregnancy. Apart from wanting children within functioning family units, the motivation for abortion revealed that the desire to have children depended on the ability to provide qualitatively good parenting. More than half the men had discussed with their partner what to do in event of pregnancy and half had decided to have an abortion if a pregnancy occurred. More than half expressed ambivalent feelings about the coming abortion, using words such as anxiety, responsibility, guilt, relief and grief. In spite of these contradictory feelings, prevailing expectations concerning lifestyle make abortion an acceptable form of birth control. A deeper understanding of the complexity of legal abortion makes it necessary to accept the role of paradox, which the ambivalence reflects. Obviously, men must constitute a target group in efforts to prevent abortions.

  • On the Existence of Transition-Metal Fullerides: Deposition and Characterization of TixC60
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Chemistry of Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0897-4756 .- 1520-5002. ; 10:4, s. 1184-1190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Titanium fulleride films (TixC60) were prepared by coevaporating Ti and C60 onto moderately heated substrates (~100 C) in an ultrahigh vacuum system. The TixC60 films were all amorphous according to X-ray diffraction and exhibited a gray, metallic luster different from the brown color of pristine C60. The compound also appeared to be metallic or semiconducting as no charging was observed in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in contrast to analyses of pure C60. XPS of the films showed a maximum titanium content of about 5.3-5.5 at. % (Ti~3.5C60). For higher titanium contents, carbide formation was observed. The XPS analyses also showed binding energy shifts and line broadening effects consistent with the formation of chemical bonds between Ti and C60. Raman spectroscopy showed a softening of the Ag(2) mode upon Ti incorporation (-4 cm-1/Ti atom) which is consistent with a partial charge transfer from Ti to C60. The TixC60 films oxidized immediately upon air exposure. However, XPS and Raman spectroscopy show persistent differences from pristine C60 which might indicate that another phase, TixOyC60, is formed upon oxidation.

  • NMR and Raman characterization of pressure polymerized C-60
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Chemical Physics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0009-2614 .- 1873-4448. ; 258:5-6, s. 540-546
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bulk C60 has been treated at 1.1 GPa and 550–585 K, producing a dense insoluble material which on heating to above 600 K reverts to normal C60. Raman and IR studies on modified material show a large number of new lines, and the Raman pentagon pinch mode shifts from 1469 to 1458 cm−1 as on photopolymerization. MAS NMR shows one broadened line at the original C60 shift 144 ppm and a small peak at about 77 ppm due to the bridging carbons. None of the new resonances observed for C60 polymerized by other methods were observed. The results verify previously suggested polymeric structures where the fullerence cages are connected by four-membered rings.

  • Physical properties of pressure polymerized C60
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: High Pressure Science and Technology. - Singapore : World Scientific. - 9810225474 ; , s. 716-718
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of C60 have been studied after treatment at high temperature and high pressure (1.1 GPa and 565 K for 2 h). The treated material is insoluble in organic solvents. We present results obtained in NMR and Raman studies and measured data for the specific heat and the thermal expansion. Our results show clearly that there are no covalent bonds and no molecular rotation, but suggest that the molecules are slightly deformed and held together by weak pi-type bonds.

  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Fullerenes and Fullerene Nanostructures. - Singapore : World Scientific. - 9810228538 ; , s. 344-348
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of bulk C60 have been studied after treatment at 1.1 GPa and 550-585 K. The treated material is insoluble in both toluene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene. Raman spectroscopy on modified aterial shows a large number of new lines, and the Raman pentagon pinch mode (Ag2) shifts from 1469 to 1458 /cm as on photopolymerization. MAS NMR shows one broadened line at the original C60 shift 144 ppm and a small peak at about 77 ppm due to the bridging carbons. The results verify previous suggested polymeric structures where the fullerene cages are connected by four-membered rings.

  • Physical properties of pressure polymerized C60
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Fullerenes: Recent Advances in the Chemistry and Physics of Fullerenes and Related Materials, volume 3. - Pennington, NJ : The Electrochemical Society. - 1566771625 ; , s. 1014-1028
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present in this paper an overview of the physical properties of the high pressure polymerized C60 phase commonly known as "soft fcc". This phase has been studied by several methods over wide ranges in temperature T and/or pressure, p. We present here experimental information about the specific heat capacity, the thermal expansion coefficient, the lattice structure, and the thermal conductivity, and we also show results obtained by NMR and Raman spectroscopy. All data presented agree with the accepted model that the individual molecules in this phase are covalently bound to form linear molecular chains. In particular, the NMR data show clearly the presence of covalent bonds, and the Raman data exhibit several new lines at very low energies connected with chain vibrations. Thermal conductivity data obtained during polymerization show both the time dependence of the process and that polymerization occurs at lower p and T than observed previously for this phase.

  • Structural and physical properties of pressure polymerized C60
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Carbon, vol. 36 issue 5-6. - : Elsevier B.V.. ; 36:5-6, s. 657-660
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the structural and dynamic properties of C60 polymerized under low-P, low-T conditions, and suggest that the disordered mixed orthorhombic-tetragonal-rhombohedral phases produced under these conditions arise from nucleation of molecular chains in random directions because of the quasi-free molecular rotation under standard reaction conditions in the fcc phase of C60. Polymerization in He gives results qualitatively different from those obtained in other media.
