  • An econometric analysis of the European Commission’s merger decisions
  • 2003
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using a sample of 96 mergers notified to the EU Commission and logit regression techniques, we analyse the Commission's decision process. We find that the probability of a phase 2 investigation and of a prohibition of the merger increases with the parties' market shares. The probability increases also when the Commission finds high entry barriers or that post-merger collusion is easy. We do not find significant effects of political variables, such as the nationality of the merging firms or the identity of the commissioner.

  • Comparison of car seats in low speed rear-end impacts using the BioRID dummy and the new neck injury criterion (NIC).
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Accident Analysis and Prevention. ; 32:2, s. 321-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Long-term whiplash associated disorders (WAD) 1-3 sustained in low velocity rear-end impacts is the most common disability injury in Sweden. Therefore, to determine neck injury mechanisms and develop methods to measure neck-injury related parameters are of importance for current crash-safety research. A new neck injury criterion (NIC) has previously been proposed and evaluated by means of dummy, human and mathematical rear-impact simulations. So far, the criterion appears to be sensitive to the major car and collision related risk factors for injuries with long-term consequences. To further evaluate the applicability of NIC, four seats were tested according to a recently proposed sled-test procedure. 'Good' as well as 'bad' seats were chosen on the basis of a recently presented disability risk ranking list. The dummy used in the current tests was the Biofidelic Rear Impact Dummy (BioRID). The results of this study showed that NICmax values were generally related to the real-world risk of long-term WAD 1-3. Furthermore, these results suggested that NICmax calculated from sled tests using the BioRID dummy can be used for evaluating the neck injury risk of different car seats.

  • Measurement and Modelling of Pm Sorption onto TiO2 and goethite
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Radiochimica Acta. - 0033-8230. ; 92, s. 683-689
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sorption of Pm (1 x 10(-9) M) onto TiO2 and goethite has been studied as a function of pH and Ionic strength (0.01, 0.1 M NaClO4) at ambient temperature under N-2 atmosphere. For both minerals studied there is no effect of the different ionic strengths and the sorption (log K-a vs. pH) increases with a slope of similar to2. At the same pH sorption is lower on the more positively (or less negatively) charged goethite (pH(pzc) = 8.4) than on the TiO2 (pH(pzc) = 6.2). A comparison to other trivalent cations sorbed on different substrates (made by extracting values from %-sorbed curves and calculating these to K-a) indicate a similar pH-dependence. The results have been fitted using a 1-pK basic Stern model with FITEQL [1]. An a priori restriction was that only one sorption reaction stoichiometry at a time was to be used to keep the number of parameters as small as possible. Outersphere and mono-, bi- and tri-dentate inner-sphere complexes were fitted. For each fit the value of the capacitance was varied to find the value that provided the best fit. Two different site densities were used: 1 site/nm(2) and 2.31 sites/nm(2). For the low site density the reaction which provides the best tit was: drop SOH0.5- + Pm+3 drop SOHPm2.5+for both minerals. At the high site density the same reaction fits for TiO2 while there are several reactions that are equivalent in the fit for goethite.

  • Targeted transgene expression in rat brain using lentiviral vectors.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neuroscience Research. - : Wiley. - 1097-4547 .- 0360-4012. ; 73:6, s. 876-885
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Direct gene transfer to the adult brain is dependent on vectors that transduce non-dividing cells, such as lentiviral vectors. Another aspect of the development of gene therapy to the brain is the need for cell-specific transgene expression. Expression from vesicular stomatitis virus G-protein (VSV-G) pseudotyped lentiviral vectors has been reported to be mainly neuron specific in the brain. We constructed cell-specific lentiviral vectors using the neuron-specific enolase (rNSE) or the glial fibrillary acidic protein (hGFAP) promoters and compared them to the ubiquitous human cytomegalovirus promoter (hCMV), a hybrid CMV/-actin promoter (CAG) and the promoter for human elongation factor 1 (EF1). Our results showed that the hGFAP promoter was expressed only in glial cells, whereas rNSE was purely neuron specific, showing that VSV-G is pantropic in the rat striatum. We conclude that the VSV-G allows transduction of both glial and neuronal cells and the promoter dictates in what cell type the transgene will be expressed. The expression of transgenes exclusively in astrocytes would allow for local delivery of secreted transgene products, such as glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), circumventing the anterograde transport that may induce unwanted side effects.

  • Next of kin’s experience of powerlessness and helplessness in palliative home care
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Supportive Care in Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0941-4355 .- 1433-7339. ; 12:2, s. 120-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Goals of work  Powerlessness and helplessness have been very little studied. The aims of this study were (1) to describe what characterise such experiences and the meaning of them to next of kin of cancer patients in advanced palliative home care and (2) to make quantifications.Patients and methods  The study design was cross-sectional and targeted next of kin during ongoing palliative home care and next of kin of patients who had died 3–9 months earlier; 233 next of kin responded (response rate 72%) to a postal questionnaire with both Likert-type and open-ended questions. The text responses were analysed with a combined qualitative and quantitative content analysis.Main results  Thirty-six percent of respondents stated that they had experienced powerlessness and/or helplessness every day or several times per week, whereas 33% had never had this experience during the palliative home care period. Powerlessness and helplessness concerned next of kins perception of the patients suffering, of the patients fading away and the next of kins own feelings of insufficiency and resulted in both physical and psychological symptoms, such as muscle tension, headache, loss of appetite, anxiety and depression. In addition, powerlessness and helplessness concerned also a deeper meaning with existential and social aspects, such as feelings of guilt, anger and loneliness. Conclusions  The main findings provide tools for the practitioner to identify situations contributing to next of kins sense of powerlessness and helplessness. The findings are discussed in relation to the concepts of symptom control, communication of awareness and humans search for action.

  • Sorption of Pu(III-IV) onto TiO2: A Preliminary Study
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Materials Research Society Symposium Proceedings. - 155899694X ; 757, s. 517-522
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A preliminary study of the sorption of reduced plutonium (III-IV) onto TiO2 has been done under anoxic conditions at varying pH and ionic strength. The first approach was to study tetravalent Pu, but the sorption decreases with time in this case. This is probably due to disproportionation of Pu(IV) at the TiO2 surface, which then acts as a catalyst. A further observation that supports this explanation is that the sorption of Pu(IV) onto the walls of the experimental equipment is in some cases higher than the sorption of (disproportioned) Pu onto the oxide.Pu(III) sorption onto the oxide was also investigated and showed similarities with the previously investigated sorption of Pm(III) in a similar system.

  • Sorption of Pu(VI) onto TiO2
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. ; 266:2, s. 269-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sorption of Pu(VI) onto TiO2 was studied as a function of pH (210) and Pu concentration (10−810−4 M) under an N2 atmosphere, in 0.016 and 0.1 M NaClO4. A batch-wise method was used, in which pH was measured in separate experimental containers after removal of a sample to determine the amount of Pu that had been sorbed. As Pu is radioactive, it was used as a tracer and measured by liquid scintillation counting. No ionic strength dependence was discerned, which was taken as an indication of inner sphere complex formation. In the interval of pH 27 the system could be described by the formation of two positively charged surface complexes using a 1-pK Stern model. Sorption of the plutonyl ion (PuO22+) and the first hydrolysis species (PuO2(OH)+) was estimated using FITEQL to logK1=6.9 and logK2=1.4, respectively.

  • Surface Charge Densities of Two Actinide(IV) Oxides: UO2 and ThO2
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - 1095-7103 .- 0021-9797. ; 256:2, s. 256-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The surface charge behavior of uranium(IV) oxide and thorium(IV) oxide was investigated by potentiometric titration, and the pH point of zero charge (pzc) was determined for both oxides. Crystalline structures were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, which showed that both oxides were of the cubic system (Fm3m) with a slightly differing unit cell size. The pzc was determined for the oxides at two ionic strengths: 0.01 and 0.1 M (NaClO4). The pzc of UO2 was found to be pH 55.5 at both ionic strengths, which was supported by measurement of the isoelectric point. The corresponding result for ThO2 was approximately pH 8, seemingly varying slightly with the ionic strength. The UO2 surface was sensitive to further oxidation, which affects titration experiments by yielding ostensibly high pzc unless the oxidation is prevented. Inert, or at least O2 and CO2 free, conditions are thus necessary during work with UO2.

  • Identification of randomly selected colonies of Lactobacilli from normal vaginal fluid by pyrosequencing of the 16S rDNA Variable V1 and V3 Regions
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Pathologica, Microbiologica et Immunologica Scandinavica (APMIS). - : Wiley. - 0903-4641 .- 1600-0463. ; 110:11, s. 802-810
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study aimed to characterize lactobacilli in vaginal fluid from 23 adult healthy women by using high-throughput DNA sequencing for identification of a large number of randomly selected colonies appearing on Rogosa and blood agar. The typing method was based on broad-range PCR of 16S rRNA gene variable regions V1 and V3, pyrosequencing, and classification of the fragments by alignment with NCBI-catalogued sequences and type strain sequences. Four major groups of sequences were found among the 402 isolates clearly corresponding to Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus iners and Lactobacillus jensenii when compared to the sequences obtained for type strains. Our results indicate that pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments as used here is a fast and reliable method well suited for identification to the species level, even within the Lactobacillus acidophilus complex.
