  • Prostate-specific antigen as surrogate for characterizing prostate cancer subgroups
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5599 .- 1651-2065. ; 36:2, s. 106-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE To evaluate how serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in a population-based cohort of men with prostate cancer vary with age and intensity in the diagnostic activity and to describe the treatment selection processes associated with PSA level. MATERIAL AND METHODS All men in the Swedish National Prostate Cancer Register diagnosed during 1996-1997 were included. In 1996 the register included 19 counties, covering 61% of the Swedish male population, and in 1997 21 counties with 79% of the Swedish male population. RESULTS A total of 8328 men were registered. PSA levels were missing in 341 cases. With increasing PSA there was a shift towards more advanced and poorly differentiated tumours. PSA at diagnosis increased with age, with the exception of patients younger than 50 years who had higher PSA values. The mean logarithm of PSA correlated negatively with the percentage of localized tumours (p < 0.005) and the age-adjusted incidence (p < 0.05) in each respective county in 1997. PSA was higher in men receiving radiotherapy compared with those treated with radical prostatectomy as well as in the group treated with bilateral orchiectomy compared with those receiving GnRH-analogues. CONCLUSIONS If PSA is used as a surrogate measure of extent of tumour volume in a population of prostate cancer patients, our findings indicate that age distribution and differences in incidence (possibly due to variation in diagnostic activity) should be taken into account. In our cohort there was a selection process, probably in part guided by PSA level, when choosing type of curative or palliative treatment.

  • Prostate-Specific Antigen for Prostate Cancer Staging in a Population-based Register
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5599 .- 1651-2065. ; 36:2, s. 99-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Previous studies have shown a relationship between serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level and prostate tumour volume. Reports based on selected case series have also indicated that serum PSA may be used for staging, although a varying prevalence of metastasizing tumours complicates the interpretation of these studies. In order to determine the accuracy of the serum level of PSA in predicting the presence of metastases we performed a prospective cohort study of a geographically defined population of men with prostate cancer. Methods: Serum level of PSA and the results of investigations for regional lymph node and distant metastases were recorded for all 8328 men with prostate cancer registered in the Swedish National Prostate Cancer Register 1996-1997.Results: The prevalence of lymph node metastases among men who had undergone lymph node exploration was 4%, 16% and 33% for well, moderately and poorly differentiated tumours. The corresponding prevalence of distant metastases was 12%, 30% and 48%. With serum PSA <20 ng/ml as a cut-off point the negative likelihood ratios for well and moderately differentiated tumours were found to be 0.47 and 0.45 for lymph node metastases and 0.24 and 0.18 for distant metastases, resulting in post-test probabilities >92% for the exclusion of metastases. In men with poorly differentiated tumours, the negative likelihood ratio would need to be even lower to safely exclude disseminated disease. Conclusion: For well to moderately differentiated tumours, further investigations to assess the presence of metastases may be omitted with no great risk for understaging if serum PSA <20 ng/ml.

  • Measurement of the gluon fragmentation function and a comparison of the scaling violation in gluon and quark jets
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 13:4, s. 573-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons are measured in various three-jet topologies in Z decays from the full data set collected with the DELPHI detector at the Z resonance between 1992 and 995. The results at different values of transverse momentum-like scales are compared. A parameterization of the quark and gluon fragmentation functions at a fixed reference scale is given. The quark and gluon fragmentation functions show the predicted pattern of scaling violations. The scaling violation for quark jets as a function of a transverse momentum-like scale is in a good agreement with that observed in lower energy e+e- annihilation experiments. For gluon jets it appears to be significantly stronger. The scale dependences of the gluon and quark fragmentation functions agree with the prediction of the DGLAP evolution equations from which the colour factor ratio CA/CF is measured to be: CA/CF = 2.26 ± 0.09stat. ± 0.06sys. ± 0.12clus.,scale..

  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 29-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data taken by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 212 pb-1 have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of the electrons, muons, and taus in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay topologies searched for were the direct decay (ℓ̃ → ℓx̃), producing acoplanar lepton pairs plus missing energy, and the cascade decay (ℓ → ℓx̃0 2 → ℓγx̃0 1), producing acoplanar lepton and photon pairs plus missing energy. The observed number of events is in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The 95% CL excluded mass limits for selectrons, smuons and staus are mẽ ≤ 87 GeV/c2, mμ̃ ≤ 80 GeV/c2 and mτ̃ 75 GeV/c2, respectively, for values of μ=-200 GeV/c2 and tanβ=1.5.

  • Study of dimuon production in photon-photon collisions and measurement of QED photon structure functions at LEP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 19:1, s. 15-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muon pair production in the process e+e- → e+e- μ+μ- is studied using the data taken at LEP1 (√s ≃ mz) with the DELPHI detector during the years 1992-1995. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 138.5 pb-1. The QED predictions have been tested over the whole Q2 range accessible at LEP1 (from several GeV2/c4 to several hundred GeV2/c4) by comparing experimental distributions with distributions resulting from Monte Carlo simulations using various generators. Selected events are used to extract the leptonic photon structure function Fγ 2. Azimuthal correlations are used to obtain information on additional structure functions, Fγ A and Fγ B, which originate from interference terms of the scattering amplitudes. The measured ratios Fγ A/Fγ 2 and FγB/Fγ 2 are significantly different from zero and consistent with QED predictions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE To estimate the age-specific prevalence and severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) among Swedish men, the intercorrelations between different symptoms, and to assess quality of life and health-seeking behaviour among men with LUTS. SUBJECTS AND METHODS In 1997, an International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) questionnaire, together with other questions about lifestyle, was mailed to all men aged 45-79 years living in two counties in Sweden; the analyses included 39 928 men. RESULTS Overall, 18.5% and 4.8% of the men were moderately and severely symptomatic; the prevalence of at least one symptom was 83%. LUTS were strongly age-dependent, with 1.8% of severe symptoms among men aged 45-49 years and increasing to 9.7% among those 75-79 years old. Frequent urination was the most common symptom among men aged <70 years and nocturia among those aged >70 years. Symptoms like hesitancy, poor flow and intermittency were highly correlated with each other (Spearman coefficients 0.56-0.60). There was a high correlation between the IPSS and a poor score for quality of life resulting from the bothersomeness of LUTS (r = 0.70). Among symptomatic subjects, 36% reported a poor quality of life (fairly bad, very bad or terrible). Only 29% of symptomatic subjects (IPSS >7) reported that they had been diagnosed previously for their urinary problems, and only 11% received medication for that. CONCLUSION Although the prevalence of LUTS in Sweden is high, the percentage of men whose quality of life is substantially affected is much lower.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: 2003 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record. - : IEEE Press. - 0780382579 ; , s. 1096-1099
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electromagnetic calorimeter of the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) consists of 16 towers of CsI(Tl) crystals. Each tower contains 8 layers of crystals (each 326.0x26.7x19.9 mm3) arranged in a hodoscopic fashion. The crystals are read out at both ends with photodiodes. Crystals produced by Amcrys-H (Ukraine) are used. A full size crystal was irradiated with a 180 MeV proton beam and the radiation induced attenuation was measured. The induced radioactivity of the crystal was also studied. In this paper we will discuss the damage due to proton irradiation and compare this with the expected in-orbit background flux.

  • The effect of CO2 on the NaCl-induced atmospheric corrosion of aluminum
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 148:4, s. B127-B131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A laboratory study of the effect of CO2 and NaCl on the atmospheric corrosion of aluminum is reported. The samples were exposed to pure air with 95% relative humidity and the concentration of CO2 was <1 and 350 ppm, respectively. Sodium chloride was added before exposure (0, 14, and 70 g/cm(2)). The main result is that the NaCl-induced atmospheric corrosion of aluminum is about 10 to 20 times faster in CO2-free humid air compared to air containing ambient levels of CO2. It is suggested that the rapid corrosion of aluminum coated with NaCl in humid CO2-free air is connected to high-pH areas in the surface electrolyte that develop due to the cathodic reduction of oxygen. The anodic dissolution of aluminum is known to be enhanced by high pH. The unexpected corrosion-inhibitive effect of CO2 is explained by the neutralization of the surface electrolyte. In the absence of CO2, bayerite, Al(OH)(3), forms. Only minute amounts of carbonate were found on the surface after exposure to CO2-containing air.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrical and optical properties of carbon-nitride CNx films (O=x=0.25) deposited by unbalanced reactive magnetron sputtering from a graphite target in mixed Ar/N2 discharges at a substrate temperature of 350°C have been investigated. Pure C films exhibit a dark conductivity at room temperature of 250 O-1 cm-1, which grows up to 250 O-1 cm-1 for CNx films with N content of 20%. For CNx films, temperature-dependent conductivity measurements suggest that two electron conduction processes exist in the investigated temperature range 130

  • Mechanical and tribological properties of CNx films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Wear. - 0043-1648 .- 1873-2577. ; 248:1-2, s. 55-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hardness, elasticity, wear rate and friction coefficient of carbon nitride (CNx) films of defined microstructure and composition are presented. CNx films were deposited by dc reactive magnetron sputtering from a C target in N2/Ar plasma. Films were grown on Si (001), Ni, and HSS substrates to thickness of ~0.5 µm at a total pressure of 3 mTorr with the N2 fraction varied from 0 to 1, and the substrate temperature Ts, varied from ambient to 350°C. The mechanical and tribological properties of the coatings were evaluated by nanoindentation and dry ball-on-disk test. For CNx (0 = x = 0.35) films deposited below 200°C (amorphous structure), the elastic recovery and hardness do not change significantly with increasing N concentration, however, the friction coefficient increases from 0.19 to 0.45, while the coating wear rate is low. For CNx (0 = x = 0.15) films grown at Ts = 350°C, where a transition from a graphite-like to a "fullerene-like" phase occurs, a dramatic increase in hardness and elasticity is observed. Furthermore, the rms surface roughness decreases from 15.0 to 0.4 nm. For 0.15 = x = 0.20, CNx films deposited at Ts = 350°C (fullerene-like phase) exhibit a smooth surface, high hardness and elasticity (~90% recovery), and a coefficient of friction against hard steel of ~0.25. For all substrates, film friction coefficient tends to increase as the nitrogen content in the film is increased. Results also indicate the formation of a transfer layer which improves the tribological properties of the films. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 78:18, s. 2703-2705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon nitride CNx (O=x=0.35) thin films, deposited by reactive dc magnetron sputtering in Ar/N2 discharges have been studied with respect to microstructure using electron microscopy, and elastic modulus using nanoindentation and surface acoustic wave analyses. For growth temperature of 100°C, the films were amorphous, and with an isotropic Young's modulus of ~170-200 GPa essentially unaffected by the nitrogen fraction. The films grown at elevated temperatures (350-550°C) show anisotropic mechanical properties due to a textured microstructure with standing basal planes, as observed from measuring the Young's modulus in different directions. The modulus measured in the plane of the film was ~60-80 GPa, while in the vertical direction the modulus increased considerably from ~25 to ~200 GPa as the nitrogen content was increased above ~15 at. %. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 382:1-2, s. 146-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth and microstructure evolution of carbon nitride CNx (0=x=0.35) films, deposited by reactive d.c. magnetron sputtering in Ar/N2 discharges has been studied. The substrate temperature TS varied between 100 and 550 °C, and the N2 fraction in the discharge gas varied from 0 to 100%. It is found that the deposition rate and film morphology show strong dependence on TS and nitrogen fraction. For growth temperature of 100 °C, the films are amorphous, and essentially unaffected by the nitrogen fraction. For TS>200 °C, however, the nitrogen fraction has more significant effect on the growth and structural evolution of the films. The pure carbon films appear porous and have a high surface roughness. For increasing nitrogen fraction the films become denser and the roughness decreases by one order of magnitude. It is suggested that a chemical sputtering process, during which desorption of volatile N2 and CN-species, predominantly C2N2, is important not only for the deposition rate and the nitrogen incorporation, but also for the resulting film structure. The chemical sputtering process becomes more pronounced at elevated temperatures with higher nitrogen fractions.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 360:1-2, s. 17-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Symmetric CNx/BN:C multilayer thin films, with nominal compositional modulation periods of ? = 2.5, 5, and 9 nm were deposited by unbalanced dual cathode magnetron sputtering from C (graphite) and B4C targets in an Ar/N2 (60/40) discharge. The multilayers and single-layer of the constituent CNx and BN:C compounds were grown to a total thickness of 0.5 µm onto Si(001) substrates held at 225°C and a negative floating potential of approx. 30 V (Ei = 24 eV). Layer characterizations were performed by TEM, X-ray reflectivity, RBS, and nanoindentation measurements. Results show that CN0.33 and BN:C (35, 50, and 15 at.% of B, N, and C, respectively) layers were prepared at the above conditions. It is suggested that all films exhibit a three-dimensional interlocked structure with a cylindrical texture in the film growth direction. The structure was continuous over relatively well defined and smooth CNx/BN:C interfaces. All coatings exhibit extreme elasticity with elastic recoveries as high as 85-90% (10 mN maximum load) attributed to the observed structure. However, the multilayers were stiffer and more elastic compared to that of the single-layers and thus shows promise for improved protective properties.

  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 147:5, s. 1751-1757
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The atmospheric corrosion of zinc has been studied at 4, 22, and 38 degrees C. The samples were exposed to synthetic air with careful control of CO2 concentration, relative humidity, and flow conditions. The relative humidity was 95%, and the concentrations of CO2 were <1 and 350 ppm, respectively. Sodium chloride was added before the exposures (0, 14. and 70 mu g/cm(2)). Mass gain and metal loss results are reported. As expected, NaCl is corrosive toward zinc, giving rise to heavy pitting. In the absence of CO2, the rare of the NaCl-induced corrosion was found to increase strongly with temperature. However, in the presence of CO2, the corrosion rate of zinc is independent of temperature. In the absence of CO2. zincite, ZnO, is the dominant corrosion prod;ct, while zinc hydroxy carbonates and simonkolleite, Zn-5(OH)(8)Cl-2. H2O, dominate in the presence of CO2. A mechanism is presented that explains the observations.

    • The influence of ambient concentrations of carbon dioxide on the NaCl-induced atmospheric corrosion of high purity die-cast MgAl alloys (AM20 and AM60) and MgAlZn alloy (AZ91) is reported. Samples were exposed four weeks in a carefully controlled synthetic atmosphere. Relative humidity was 95%, the temperature was 22.0degreesC, and the concentration of CO2 was <1 or 350 ppm. Sodium chloride was added before the exposures (70 μg/cm(2)). The corrosion products were analyzed by gravimetry, ion chromatography, X-ray diffraction, and environmental scanning electron microscopy. Mass gain and metal loss results are reported. As expected, the combination of high humidity and NaCl is very corrosive toward the magnesium alloys investigated. The NaCl-induced corrosion is inhibited by ambient concentrations of CO2. Exposures in the absence of CO2 give rise to heavy pitting; Mg(OH)(2), brucite, is the dominant corrosion product. In the presence of CO2, a uniform layer of hydrated magnesium hydroxy carbonate, Mg-5 (CO3)(4) (OH)(2)&BULL;5H(2)O, forms. In both environments, the corrosion rates increased in the order AZ91, AM60, AM20.

    • The influence of NaNO3 salt deposits on the atmospheric corrosion of zinc in humid air has been studied. Comparisons are made with the effects of NaCl and Na2SO4. Also the combined effect of NaNO3 with NaCl or Na2SO4 was investigated. The salts were applied to zinc samples prior to exposure. The samples were exposed to purified humid air with careful control of relative humidity (95%), temperature (22.0degreesC), and flow conditions. The CO2 concentration was 350 ppm and the exposure time was 4 weeks. Mass gain and metal loss results are reported. The corrosion products were analyzed by gravimetry, ion chromatography, and X-ray diffraction. Results show that the corrosion rate in the presence of NaNO3 is only a third of that registered in the presence of NaCl and Na2SO4. Further, a slight inhibitive effect of NaNO3 was found in the presence of NaCl or Na2SO4. The decreased corrosion rate in the presence of NaNO3 was attributed to the reduction of nitrate to nitrite at the zinc surface. Nitrite is suggested to act as a corrosion inhibitor toward zinc.

    • The influence of salt deposits on the atmospheric corrosion of zinc was studied in the laboratory. Four chloride-containing salts, NaCl, NH4Cl, ZnCl2, and MgCl2, and four sulfate-containing salts, Na2SO4,(NH4)(2)SO4, ZnSO4, and MgSO4, were investigated. The salts were applied by spraying a saturated ethanol/water solution before exposure. The samples were exposed to purified humid air with careful control of relative humidity (95%), temperature (22.0degreesC), and air flow. The concentration of CO2 was 350 ppm and the exposure time was four weeks. The salts formed aqueous solutions on the metal surface. Mass gain and metal loss results are reported. The corrosion products were analyzed by gravimetry, ion chromatography, and X-ray diffraction. It was concluded that zinc corrodes by an electrochemical mechanism. Of the four cations studied, sodium was by far the most corrosive toward zinc. The corrosion of zinc was directly correlated with the amount of sodium ion and did not depend on whether Na2SO4 or NaCl was added. The comparatively rapid corrosion caused by the two sodium salts is suggested to be due to the absence of insoluble sodium compounds. In contrast, the divalent cations precipitate in the cathodic areas due to the high pH values produced, resulting in the blocking of the cathodic sites.

    • PURPOSE: To evaluate a simple method for quantification of focal activity in bone scintigraphy (BS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The gamma camera was calibrated using a phantom. Quantitative bone scintigraphy (QBS) was performed on 11 men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa), for whom routine BS showed involvement of the skeleton. Following endocrine therapy for 4 to 8 months, a second QBS was performed. Changes in QBS values were then compared to changes in serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). RESULTS: PSA response indicating regression of PCa was accompanied by a decrease in the QBS value in 8 of the 11 patients. The overall mean error of the QBS values was 15%. CONCLUSION: QBS according to this method is a relatively simple procedure that might contribute to objective evaluation of therapeutic effects in skeletal metastases, although its validity must be tested in a larger clinical material.

    • The aim of this study was to evaluate different strategies to increase the tumour radiation dose for experimental radioimmunotherapy using 125I-labelled monoclonal antibody (MAb) E4 in a nude mice model xenografted with DU-145 tumours. The effects from a single injection of the 125I-labelled MAb E4, the same total amount of radiolabelled MAb E4 divided into three repeated injections, and the effect of pre-targeting with non-labelled MAb E4 for reducing the amount of shed antigen were investigated. Based on repetitive quantitative radioimmunoscintigraphies, calculation of the tumour radiation dose delivered from the 125I-nuclide was performed for each strategy. The single injection strategy without pretargeting rendered the highest mean tumour radiation dose, i.e. 0.23 Gy/MBq. Pretargeting with non-labelled MAb E4 before a single injection of [125I]E4 resulted in a slightly lower mean tumour radiation dose, i.e. 0.19 Gy/MBq, compared to the single injection alone. An even lower mean tumour radiation dose, i.e. 0.14 Gy/MBq, was obtained when the same total administered amount of activity was divided into three separate injections given in 10-day intervals. We concluded that the single injection strategy is the most efficient when using MAb E4 in this tumour model. The tumour radiation doses were not increased by dividing the same amount of activity into three injections or by pretargeting with non-labelled MAb E4.

  • Levels of ochratoxin A in blood from Norwegian and Swedish blood donors and their possible correlation with food consumption
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Food and Chemical Toxicology. - 0278-6915 .- 1873-6351. ; 39:12, s. 1145-1151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Blood levels of ochratoxin A were determined in 406 Scandinavian blood donors (206 from Oslo, Norway, and 200 from Visby on the island of Gotland, Sweden), using an HPLC method. In connection with the blood collection, the subjects were asked to fill in a food questionnaire to obtain individual dietary information relevant to ochratoxin A exposure. The mean plasma level of ochratoxin A was 0.18 ng/ml in Oslo and slightly higher, 0.21 ng/ml (P = 0.046) in Visby. There was no correlation between plasma levels of ochratoxin A and the estimated total dietary intake of ochratoxin A based on consumption data and levels in food (retrieved from the literature), neither was the plasma level of ochratoxin A correlated with the total amount of food consumed. However, consumption of several foods, including cereal products, wine, beer and pork, were to some minor degree related to high plasma levels of ochratoxin A. The strongest correlations (correlation coefficient r >0.4; P <0.001) were observed for women in relation to the consumption of beer or medium brown bread. Correlation analysis of combinations of two or more food categories did not result in any statistically significant correlation.
